Siqueira, Cinthia Lucia de Oliveira January 2019 (has links)
Through a participant research, whose focus of observation and intervention turned to the imaginative, inventive and creative potential of the students, our goal was to direct the eyes to the elderly as individuals in a continuous process of development. To that end, we refute the discourse that insists on controlling and sanitizing old age and proposing a depletion of life, which implies experiencing the dramas inherent in existence - experiences strong enough to propitiate the human constitution as a work of art. We are guided by the cultural historical theory of Vygotsky, which approaches the process of humanization from a prospective view - resulting from the imbricated and complex relationship between biological on one side and social, cultural and historical on the other. After two years of follow-up of the group, it was possible to understand that the elderly always reinvent themselves, to construct new ways of acting and thinking. If in the old age there are situations that say of a certain impediment, nevertheless, it is possible to be projected for the future, to submit to conflicts and to launch itself to challenges. Such considerations allow a resignification of the aging process, move the elderly from the condition of subject of no, to subject of the yes and suggest new perspectives of pedagogical action in o...

Malek, Rima 18 September 2010 (has links) (PDF)

Access to and use of library electronic resources at the National Open University of Nigeria

Opeyemi, Oluwaseun Babarotimi January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate the extent of access to and use of library electronic resources and their implications on remote users at the National Open University of Nigeria. Specific objectives were formulated to: find out the different types of electronic resources available in the NOUN Library; investigate academic staffs’ and students’ level of awareness of electronic resources available in the NOUN library; explore the various types of electronic resources used by academic staffs and students of NOUN; find out how academic staffs and students access and use electronic resources in NOUN library; analyze the policies that enable access to and use of electronic resources by academic staffs and students at NOUN; find out the perceptions and attitudes of academic staffs and students toward the electronic resources available in the NOUN library; and identify the challenges associated with access to and use of electronic resources by the academic staffs and students of NOUN. The study adopted a quantitative research approach and survey research method was employed. The study targeted 1,680 population samples of which include 1,513 Students, 140 Academic staffs, and 27 Academic Librarians. Probability (Stratified random and systematic) sampling and nonprobability (purposive) sampling methods were adopted. Two sample frames were used: Students - classified into subgroups (Level) in each selected study centers and Academic staff - classified into subgroups (academic staff/academic librarian). Online (Google form) self-administered closed-ended questionnaire was sent to participants’ email. Data collected were analyzed through Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). This finding revealed that electronic journals and electronic books are readily available in the NOUN library. Academic staff most likely, interact with the library staff or visit the library to be aware of library electronic resources, however, the students struggled to be aware through personal efforts. NOUN library creates awareness through the email and notice boards. The academic staff and students access and use the library electronic resources for various multidimensional purposes, however, there is a low patronage of these electronic resources by academic staff and students as less than 40% of academic staff and students access and use the library electronic resources. Electricity outage, low internet connectivity speed and high cost of access to internet were presented as challenges encountered while accessing and using electronic resources. Recommendations: the library management should develop awareness programmes that is appropriate for an ODL university community through the use of modern communication tools, and emphasy should be on the use of electronic resources in the university curriculum. / Information Science

Information literacy and lifelong learning in the National Open University of Nigeria

Onwuchekwa, Edeama Oyidiya-Onyike 05 April 2017 (has links)
This study was conducted at the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and it considered the information literacy and lifelong learning skills of the students in the University. The National Open University is an Open and Distance Learning (ODL) system that encompasses education for all, education for life, lifelong learning, life-wide education, adult education, mass education, media-based education, self-learning and part-time studies. The ability to recognise the need for the available information, retrieve, evaluate and use this information is a hallmark towards the direction of information literacy in any society. Developing lifelong learners is central to the mission of higher education institutions like universities, especially for distance learners. The purpose of the study was to investigate information literacy skills amongst the students in the National Open University. This study utilized the case study method of quantitative research mixed with a qualitative strand in its data collection process. The dominant quantitative approach (questionnaire) was used to investigate the information literacy and lifelong learning skills of the students in the National Open University whilst the qualitative approach (interview and document analysis) was used to collect qualitative data needed to clarify areas that were not adequately covered in the quantitative data collection phase. This study used the questionnaire, interview and document analysis as its data collection methods. The study was conducted in five selected study centres out of the seventy-two centres of the National Open University. This study utilized the Krejcie and Morgan (1970) formula, where the sample size of 384 was chosen because the total number of the sampled students’ population was 170 830. From the quantitative perspective of the study, data analysis involved the use of simple frequency and percentage distribution, mean, median and standard deviation. The descriptive statistics were generated on all the variables in the instrument and this was accomplished with the aid of a computer software programme known as the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. A thematic method of data analysis was used for this qualitative strand of the study. The results of the study revealed that the information literacy library facilities available at NOUN were course materials and University websites. The study confirmed that there were no facilities in relation to information literacy development in all the schools and there was no form of information literacy integration curriculum in the University. The study established that there were no information literacy programmes put in place to support, promote and create awareness of information literacy for lifelong learning and no methods were put in place to assess or measure the information literacy competency levels of the students in the National Open University of Nigeria. The study revealed that the link of collaboration between the academics in the school and the professional librarians was weak and not coordinated. The documents analysed brought to light information that provided insights on information literacy development in the University. In the documents analysed, University documents were in place concerning information literacy development but these resources only stated in print, the development processes towards information. The results of the study revealed that there was still so much work to be done with regards to the implementation of policies by the University management and staff towards information literacy development. The students in the University also have a role to play in developing their information literacy skills for lifelong learning. A recommendation that was made from this study was for the University management to integrate information literacy to become part of the university curriculum for all students. Information literacy (IL) policies should be formulated and channelled to support IL education in the University so that students will attain the necessary competencies and skills needed to access, process and assess information. Arising from the results gained from this study, it was recommended that information literacy educators should be trained in the area of information resources and ICT in order to enhance job performance. There is a serious need for the University to engage the librarians through regular training and re-training through professional development workshops. The library staff in conjunction with the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) unit of the University should create seminars and workshop for students and staff towards the improvement of information literacy instruction. For effective IL implementation in a distance learning environment, the University should work towards developing an information literacy course that is designed for asynchronous online delivery. A further empirical study on the development and implementation of information literacy skills for students in the University is also recommended. / Information Science / D. Litt. et Phil. Um estudo de transformações educacionais e sociais em contextos amazônicos sob a égide da Universidade Aberta do Brasil: Breves e São Sebastião da Boa Vista - um mundo não tão a parte / Studies on the educational and social transformations in the Brazilian Amazon context under the aegis of the Open University of Brazil: Breves and São Sebastião da Boa Vista a not so far away land

Alves, Rosângela Aparecida 06 June 2017 (has links)
The expansionist process in Higher Education during the 1990s triggered by the diversification and widening of educational opportunities has taken place within the context of the reform of the State and the Education System in Brazil. It has actually favored several governmental policies and activities in Education and in the widening of Distance Education Modality. Although growth in Distance Education initially took place within the private sector, the establishment of the Open University of Brazil, a public institution, in 2005, provided access to Higher Education and to Continued Formation for the improvement of educational indexes and basic education. By the end of the first decade of the 21st century, public higher education and distance education reached the backlands where schooling may be considered a conquest for the local population and as the public policy of the State which upgrades numerically higher education in Brazil. Current problematization is therefore related to social, cultural and economic significances of the educational policy of the local population. The Open University of Brazil as a stance in public policy is problematized with regard to the social and cultural produced. Discussions on the policy for access to public Higher Education are foregrounded on the principles and terms of democracy, citizenship and human development, on Pierre Bordieu´s Theory of Capital and on Amartya Sen´s Capability Approach. Data were produced at Breves and São Sebastião da Boa Vista, two educational poles in the Island of Marajó, Brazil. Field work comprised documentary sources, questionnaires, observation of sites and halfstructured autobiographical-style interviews. Personnel comprised 43 OUB graduates who answered the questionnaire and ten interviews. They hailed from families without any schooling or with short schooling tradition. In fact, they were first in the family to attend an undergraduate course. Results show that, although 70% of the population in the state of Pará, Brazil, live in the backlands and in spite of the fact that only two Higher Education Institutes have their campuses in the hinterland, running OUB poles in 27 municipalities have an important role in people´s life opportunities, especially those marked by social conditions. Further, educational data in the state of Pará reveal an increase in teachers´ qualifications backed by OUB and Parfor, in Human Development Index and in the transformation of cultural capital into social and economic capital described by the interviewed people. The above evidence cannot be discarded when the democratization of access to higher education is discussed, especially the role of DE in the process, as well as the public education valorization. DE´s social roles in specific places as a national educational policy should be understood and acknowledged. In fact, it produces individual and social effects locally and contributes towards a better life style within an unequal and unjust society.

The purpose was to collect subsidies to be used in educating teachers for instructional contexts which aim at developing practices focused on education for that age group, providing the elderlies not only with integral development, but also equal opportunities and social inclusion. The relevance of this work is primarily, the worldwide growth interest in the social life of the elderly. This research discussed the increase in longevity in the world (Frias, 1998; Goldman, 2001; Kalache and Kickbusch, 1997; Veras, 1995), Gerontology (Cachioni, 2003; Hayflick, 1996; Neri, 1995; Papaléo Netto, 1996), Education (Canary, 2000; Case, 2000; Delors et al., 1999, Freire, 1996; Giubilei, 1993, Lima, 2001, Rogers, 1969; Sobral, 2001, Vygotsky, 1978), The Open Universities of The Third Age (Jordan Neto, 2001; Martins de Sá, 1991; Vella, 1997) and teacher education (Kenski, 2001, Monteiro, 2000, Moraes, 1997; Perrenoud, 2002) for those who are aging. To carry out the research, I used the hermeneutic-phenomenological approach (van Manen, 1990; Freire, 2007); including researching on interpretations of learning from students and teachers, mature adults and elderly, on this phase of their lives. In addition, this research tried to show what the nature of learning in old age in two Open Universities is. The gathered texts consisted of sixteen transcribed interviews with students and teachers, mature adults and elderly of two open universities. From the descriptions and interpretations of the experiences of these individuals, it was possible to identify the nature of the phenomenon. However, it should be emphasized that, throughout the interpretation process, the texts collected indicated that, against the initial intention, the target phenomenon was, in fact, the search in The Open University by senior citizens. When I reached the essence of the phenomenon, I identified the themes that structured this search, which are learning, welfare, pastime and relationships. These themes can be used as a basis for further researches. They can be and should continue being the prime objective of those who work or will work at institutions in which there are people from an age segment that most grows in the society we live / Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo descrever e interpretar o fenômeno do aprender para os alunos adultos maduros e idosos de duas Universidades Abertas da Terceira Idade de São Paulo.

Lacerda, Simone Magalhães 22 May 2009 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Simone Magalhaes Lacerda.pdf: 342888 bytes, checksum: 55eccd3882cd1915b82a24d8c77f0dc0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2009-05-22 / This paper brings a reflection that questions representations of old age, issue brought up by the coordinators and students of UNIFAL (Universidade Aberta à Terceira Idade, Universidade Federal de Alfenas-MG/ University Open to Seniors, - the Federal University of Alfenas- Minas Gerais). One of its main objectives was not only to examine the universe of this program in Alfenas centered on the elderly, but to address conceptions related to the aging process and old age itself, which provided subsidies to this program as well as to others of this nature. Accordingly, I explore, on the one hand, how notions of health, education and quality of life are mobilized and articulated to justify the opening of the university to seniors : movement which enabled me to look into representations of old age beyond the health /sickness polarity, axis articulator of organicist discourse. I, therefore, discuss the appearance of the expression seniors and its relationship to old and elderly, pointing out that the notion it refers to is linked to a renewed conception of health (which includes the complex issue concerning human welfare. ) On the other hand, I turn my attention to the history of the constitution of open universities (in Brazil and the rest of the world). In this enterprise, I identify the importance of university extension in the materialization of this program centered on seniors and the two-way avenue that is at issue in this projection outside the university walls : the university opens up to teach but it learns from the elderly. In line with this, I bring to discussion the pair teach / learn in the university realm open to seniors. Finally, I bring to light the result of data analysis, gathered in semi-structured interviews, carried out by the coordinators and students of UnATI-UNIFAL. I make use of the methodological tool used by Lefévre & Lefévre (2000) o Discurso do Sujeito Coletivo (DSC)/ Discourse of the Collective Subject in whose conceptual basis the notion of social representation lies (Moscovici, 1961; Jodelet, 1989). I try to demonstrate that , if there is the possibility of identification of general themes- among them, health/sickness/ teach/learn, losses/gains, life/death, activity/idleness - which are inscribed in the discourse of those interviewed, their unique marks should be acknowledged.

Χαλέλλη, Ειρήνη 05 February 2015 (has links)
The rapid development and intrusion of information technology and communications have caused radical changes in all sectors of human’s activity. (Castells, 1998). Of particular interest is the great technology’s influence on education. Due to the adoption of the new technologies, e-learning has been emerged and developed. As a result, distance learning has transformed and new possibilities have appeared. It is remarkable that distance learning became and considered as a scout of the new era in education and contributed to the quality of education: e-learning is trying to cover the limitations of conventional teaching environment. In the present thesis, an integrated system of dynamic analysis and prediction of the performance of students in distance education has been designed and implemented. The initial idea for designing this system came from the higher distance education institutes’ need to provide quality education to its students and to improve the quality of managerial decisions. One way to achieve highest level of quality in higher distance education e-learning system is by discovering knowledge from educational data to study the main attributes that may affect the students’ performance. The discovered knowledge can be used to offer a helpful and constructive recommendations to the academic planners in higher distance education institutes to enhance their decision making process, to improve students’ academic performance, trim down failure rate and dropout rate, to assist instructors, to improve teaching and many other benefits. Dropout rates in university level distance learning are definitely higher than those inconventional universities, thus limiting dropout is essential in university-level distance learning.
