"A poet from the north:" Arvo Pärt, Orient and Occident, and the aural architecture of his orthodox faith

Forrestal, John Daniel January 2014 (has links)
Thesis (M.M.) PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / Arvo Pärt is a contemporary sacred composer who is recognized for developing what he has referred to as the ‘tintinnabuli’ compositional technique. His tintinnabuli technique has led him to great success both in and outside of the Classical music world. Although a self-professed Orthodox Christian (to which he converted in 1972), he has composed choral works for Catholic, Orthodox, and Anglican services. In the year 2000, Pärt composed the work Orient and Occident for string orchestra. The work is a wordless tintinnabuli setting of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. Its idiosyncratic use of dissonance, string techniques, and modal vocabulary is atypical of his tintinnabuli works. Several reviews suggest that Orient and Occident shares similarities with Near-Eastern music, or the characteristics of Islamic cantillation. Throughout Pärt’s compositional career, he has declined to comment in depth on his own spirituality, and he has left it to his audience to draw their own conclusions. He has suggested letting the music "speak for itself," as a symbol to convey his own inner spiritual thoughts. I suggest that Orient and Occident is an exposition of his own inner Orthodoxy, and a musical mediation of his Orthodox faith in relation to other faiths, Christian or otherwise. This thesis considers the ways in which we view Pärt as mediator for sacred music in a secular, postmodern environment, through Orient and Occident and historical perspectives of the icon in Byzantine Orthodox traditions. It examines the broader connotations of Pärt, the icon, and spirituality; providing insights into his 2010 performance in Istanbul. It examines the ‘aural architecturality’ of tintinnabulation, through hermeneutic and phenomenological theories surrounding iconography and light mysticism. It tackles the notions of ‘catholicity’ and ecumenicity with which the world has come to know Pärt; from the lens of his Orthodox faith, and extending outwards across geographical, cultural, political, and spiritual borders. / 2031-01-01

Antar, Susan January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to gain understanding of orthodox Christianity in Swedish educational material. The aim was to compare the presentation of orthodox Christianity towards pupils before the new curriculum and after. With the help of an analytical approach by Bergström and Boreu ́s and the interpretation strategy by Quentin Skinner, I have studied material used in school for the subject religion. I have limited my educational material in one way. The material that I have chosen is produced from the year 2003 until 2012. The goal is to recognize how orthodox Christianity is presented to Swedish pupil ́s. The result will contain a discussion about the ways a specific religion is represented in school, what kind of picture is created for this religion and if there is a difference in these presentations in a period of time.

Fenced by the red thread

Kintsurashvili, Nino 01 May 2019 (has links)
As a first-generation Georgian to be born the year after Soviet Union collapsed, I carry the weight of the uncertainty and the shared memory of the years before my birth that is engraved in the minds of the people around me. Through the years of chaos that had to come later, I always thought that me and my country grew up and matured together, as the peers of same age. Transition from a strictly Atheistic society into predominantly fundamental Orthodox Christian nation has been the process that I witnessed while growing up. Being raised by an Orthodox iconographer father, working on frescoes and icons have left the permanent mark on my identity as an artist. My work, through the range of media, deals with this clash of radical ideologies, while drawing from Orthodox iconography and compositions, I transport the images into a neutral, sterile state where they are re-examined and re-evaluated. Even though my work deals with social issues in Georgia, I see most of it as an autobiographical narrative that addresses the local space that I come from.

Vasiljev, Sanja January 2012 (has links)
This essay is about the representation of orthodox Christianity in Swedish educational material. With the help of my analytical approach inspired by Michel Foucault, I have studied material used in school for the subject Religion. I have limited the educational material in two ways. First, the main reason for this is that I am only interested in material written and produced from the year 2010 until today. Secondly, the material I have chosen to focus on is written for the grades 7-9 and for high school. My goal is to define how orthodox Christianity is presented to the Swedish pupil. The aim is to create a discussion about the ways a religion, generally considered as foreign, is presented in school and what kind of picture of the said religion is thereby created.

Specifika ošetřování Ukrajinských a Ruských klientů / Specificity of nursing care of Ucraine and Russian clients

HROMOVÁ, Miroslava January 2008 (has links)
Each year the level of migration rises. In the Czech Republic, we observe a sustained increase of variety in terms of nationalities, cultures, ethnicities. Among the numerous communities that can be found within our borders are the ethnic groups of Russians and Ukrainians. The influence that a person's cultural background has on their behavior in times of sickness and in times of health is enormous. Culture has an impact not only on a person's lifestyle, but also on the way in which such a person responds to, and should be treated with, medical care and nursing. Medical staff should be aware of the different patterns of behavior of members of various nationalities and ethnicities. The objectives of this diploma thesis are: identify specific aspects of providing nursing services to the Russian and Ukrainian minorities, and ensure that Russian and Ukrainian clients are satisfied with the nursing service in our hospitals. This paper is divided into two sections. In the theoretical part, the reader may familiarize himself or herself with the religious beliefs that form a part of the life of Russian and Ukrainian clients. This part also includes an overview of the history of these peoples, their migration, their assimilation to our conditions, the issue of barriers to communication, and the ensuing problems. The practical part of this thesis relies on qualitative research via structured interviews within the Russian and Ukrainian communities, and on quantitative research in the form of a questionnaire with which we identified the degree to which nurses are knowledgeable in the belief system of orthodox christianity, and their opinion regarding the necessity of a specific approach to providing care to Russian and Ukrainian clients. Four research questions were formulated, and have drawn answers, in the course of our research. Based on this research, we put together a nursing standard that should facilitate and improve the care provided by nurses in our hospitals. The results of this research, and this thesis itself, could be used in practice to enhance, and to improve the quality, of nursing services rendered, as a training tool for nurses, to present the results on scientific or undergraduate conferences, and for publication in professional journals.

The Christian flavour in the Swedish school and the religions that aren’t visible

Wilhelmsson, Minetta January 2022 (has links)
Many consider Sweden as one of the most secularised countries in the world. While the country is rapidly growing more religiously and culturally diverse there still remains a Lutheran touch in the school curriculum. Skolverket depicts itself as being nondenominational and objective, but many have argued against this statement. The educational system’s roots of both being organised and run using Christian religious materials clearly presents the complex situation that can be recognized even today.  Researchers and students alike agree that there is an issue regarding the representation of all cultural and religious groups in the Swedish educational system. The students in the work of Carina Holmqvist Lidh testify of the lack of representation or frequent misrepresentation in their formal education. Many feel the religion they meet in schools cannot be recognized as their own. This is a problem both in the condensed teaching materials which are used and the very limited lesson time a teacher has at hand. An active didactical choice, deeming what’s important knowledge or not, falls in the lap of educators and the consequences that I want to present in this essay is that many religious orientations risk going unnoticed.  That’s why in this essay my goal is to create a discussion about the ways the Lutheran Christian faith has historically, and continues to affect religion education, all while deeming itself as non-confessional and neutral. Furthermore, owing to fellow students’ essays and professors' analysis of textbooks depiction of non-Lutheran religious groups I hope to present the problem with this Lutheran-touch, which leaves many students from other religious orientations feeling their faith is misrepresented or left out in traditional teaching.

Nilsson, Eva January 2022 (has links)
Based on studies of religion and atheism in Greece, which show different results, theinterest was aroused to study the matter more closely and in depth through qualitativeinterviews with four persons living in Chania in Crete where the Greek OrthodoxChristian culture has long been visibly established. The essay concerns the practice ofreligion as it is expressed through Greek Orthodox Christianity in relation to religiosity, atheism and secularization. The survey shows four people's views and experiences ofreligion, atheism, secularization and Orthodox Christianity and the church, as well as ifand how this affects their lives. The interview results have been analysed in comparisonwith surveys and literature regarding Orthodox Christianity, religious practice, atheismand secularization. The analyses show that there are very different thoughts and beliefsabout the concepts of religion, atheism and secularization, perceptions about the concepts'relationship to each other and to what extent this affects the interviewees. The discussionmentions the degree of religiosity and religious practice in relation to the view of atheismand secularization as well as a possible ongoing loosening of the tradition of the OrthodoxChurch.

A treva luminosa: teologia e mística em Paul Evdokimov

Gallego, Roberto de Almeida 07 November 2012 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Roberto de Almeida Gallego.pdf: 1156322 bytes, checksum: aa2b5d51ff13d31ece07c61971797ce5 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-11-07 / The object of the present doctoral thesis is to study the co-relation between theology and mystical theology in the works of the Russian philosopher and Orthodox theologian Paul Evdokimov (1901-1970). As a result of the Bolchevik Revolution, Paul Evdokimov, like many intellectuals of his generation, had to leave Russia and settled in France, where he lived and wrote, thus contributing significantly to the dissemination of the Orthodox Christianity in the West. By expounding with creative depth and unique sensitivity the treasures of his own religious tradition, Paul Evdokimov bequeathed to Orthodox Christians and Western men and women alike a legacy of profound insights into the human condition, which still preserves their vitality and freshness at the dawn of this new century. Initially, this study seeks to draw a biographical portrait of Paul Evdokimov and identify the main theoretical and existential references that helped shape his vision of the world. These references have a philosophical, theological and literary character. Furthermore, this study focuses on the critical fortune of Paul Evdokimov s works through the compilation and summarization of opinions from commentators of Evdokimov s oeuvre. The reader is presented sequentially with some characteristic traits of Orthodox Christianity. Finally, this study looks into the issues related to the evidence and validation of the knowledge of God from Paul Evdokimov s perspective, comparing such ideas to contributions arising from the epistemology of religion with regard to the so-called proof or arguments of God s existence. From all these elements, this study aims to demonstrate that to Paul Evdokimov, there is a fundamental indistinction between theology and mystical theology, namely, at the ultimate foundation that supports them, in that such indistinction can be traced in some of the dominant ideas prevalent in his oeuvre / A presente tese doutoral tem, por objetivo, estudar a correlação entre teologia e mística na obra de Paul Evdokimov (1901-1970), filósofo e teólogo ortodoxo russo, o qual, em virtude do advento da Revolução Bolchevique em sua terra natal, viu-se, juntamente com outros tantos intelectuais de sua geração, obrigado a deixá-la, fixando-se, então, na França, onde viveu e escreveu, contribuindo, significativamente, para a divulgação, no Ocidente, do cristianismo ortodoxo.

Geneze ruského politického náboženství prizmatem civilizační analýzy / The Orthodox civilization? Genesis of Russian political religion through the prism of civilizational analysis

Seliverstova, Evgeniya January 2015 (has links)
Thesis "The Orthodox civilization? Genesis of Russian political religion through the prism of civilizational analysis" has a historico-theoretical character. It presents an analysis of origins and evolution of two most important Russian ideologies which were expressed in religious terms. Using the civilizational perspective and by reconstructing of factual and mental context of two Russian ideologies, this thesis polemizes with religious determinant of Russian civilization. Instead, it establishes an issue of religio-political nexus, which seems to be more successful for thinking about civilizational specifics of Russia. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
