Issues and challenges regarding the implementation of environmental education policy in formal education in South Africa

Issues and challenges that teachers and educator encounter in implementing school-based Environmental Education have been established, described and explored against the background of the South African education system. In a succinct manner sources upon and from which Curriculum 2005 (C2005) is founded have been explored. Within C2005 the foundations of EE have been traced. International and national trends and developments have been illuminated and the contributions of these endeavours are eminent in school-based EE. The methodology and research process of study does not claim to be the only one appropriate for this research question. However, the research focus has been studied through the chosen methodology as the socio-historical context demanded. The research process has been dynamic with the researcher responding to the emerging data and being guided by the research activities outlined in the research design. The two case studies have provided the researcher with valuable data necessary for making sound judgements about issues and challenges encountered during the implementation of environmental learning in formal education structures. Although the research question has been adequately explored, the study does not claim to be exhaustive and with no limitations. It is hoped that the recommendations made in the study, based on the findings, will be valuable to teachers, educators and education policy makers involved with EE implementation in formal education. / Educational Studies / D.Ed. The development of historical consciousness in the teaching of history in South African schools

The advent of democracy in South Africa necessitated a radical transformation in education. It was recognised from the outset that the revision of History education was an activity that had to be accorded special consideration if the renaissance of education in South African public schools was to become a reality. Yet, precisely at a time when the nurturing of historical consciousness, especially among the youth, is so urgent an undertaking, the subject History is increasingly being judged as lacking in utilitarian purpose, and is deemed irrelevant and meaningless. A strong need is thus felt among History educationists to strengthen History studies because of its importance not only in itself but also because a knowledge of the past is crucial to an understanding of the present. In a South African educational context this thesis attempts to make a contribution to this worthwhile endeavour. It investigates the nature, functions, changing modes and historical role of historical consciousness in the writing and teaching of History in South Africa; proposes a heightened interest in adopting an outcomes-based approach to the teaching of history; and advocates an historical consciousness approach to the teaching of History to learners in the Further Education and Training phase (schools), within the framework of the above-mentioned Outcomes-based Education system. It recommends, among others, the training and retraining of teachers in the historical consciousness approach; the adoption of a fresh methodology; and the revamping and strengthening of the content and scope of the present curriculum to accommodate the new historical consciousness approach. The thesis concludes with a set of recommendations which could serve as a basis for the nurturing of historical consciousness in the South African History classroom. / Educational Studies / D.Ed. Inclusion of environmental education in the teaching of the Biology curriculum for grades 10 to 12

The purpose of this study was to develop a Life Sciences programme, integrating Environmental Education, on environmental endocrine disruptors, for the Further Education and Training Phase of the Outcomes Based Educational System. This programme aims at giving learners the necessary knowledge and skills to limit their exposure to Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs). The programme was evaluated by means of a quantitative study. Group-administered questionnaires were used to gather information before and after the programme had commenced. Lickert scales were used to establish the learners' knowledge, attitudes and values in connection with EDCs and the environment before and after the learners had followed the programme on EDCs. The results of the study indicated that the programme proved to be successful in increasing the knowledge of the target group in connection with EDCs. This study will contribute to the process of integrating Environmental Education in the Life Sciences curriculum. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.(Environmental Education)

Curriculum 2005 assessment policy and its implementation in grade 9 in the Limpopo Province

The study investigates the implementation of the Curriculum 2005 assessment policy guidelines in natural sciences in grade nine in five secondary schools selected by judgement sampling in Limpopo Province. Data were gathered by means of a literature study, examination of learner and educator portfolios and interviews with educators. Findings show that most participants were unable to carryout the continuous assessment (CASS) tasks as required. A discrepancy in the quality and quantity of assessment tasks among the schools emerged. All schools replaced the final common tasks for assessment (CTA) with internal examinations due to the late arrival of materials and the level of difficulty. Contributing factors were lack of a well-planned curriculum, proper resource materials, lack of coordination of efforts due to poor curriculum support and management and inadequate professional competence in the Outcomes-based methods of teaching, learning and assessment. Perceptions of the accelerated Christian education programme as preparation for tertiary education

This study seeks to explore aspects of the educational practice of the Accelerated Christian Education (ACE) programme. The philosophy (the Christian underpinnings) and pedagogy (mastery learning) of the ACE programme as contemporary educational practice is examined against a background of educational reform movements such as outcomes-based education. In addition, the thesis examines the issue of what it takes for a student to succeed in tertiary education, investigates the stated claims of the ACE programme in this regard, and then scrutinises these claims, in an empirical study, that includes ACE graduates, their parents and university admissions officers. Finally recommendations are made to those who use the programme in schools regarding any perceived strengths and/or weaknesses in the programme itself, or in the management and implementation of the programme, with a view to enhancing the educational experience of high school students preparing to enter the realm of tertiary education. / Psychology of Education / M. Perceptions and knowledge regarding indigenous knowledge and environmental education in the Natural Science curriculum

Human activities that involve interactions amongst three players i.e. nature, humans and technology, continue to impact negatively on the Earth's biosphere. The impact is tremendous: consumption of resources at an unsustainable level leading to rapid loss of natural resources and biodiversity. The plea to reverse this negative trend is as valid now as it were many years ago. While some progress has been made to develop strategies to wisely manage and protect the Earth's resources, the state of the environment is still fragile. Strategies are far from satisfactory: hence the grounds for a new commitment in a manner best suited to a country's needs and resources. In recent years, research in indigenous knowledge systems has been pursued in an attempt to develop a deeper understanding of its complex linkages with the environment. Incorporating some of these linkages in the science curricula provides opportunities for learners to make informed choices to address individual and society's needs by extracting relevant elements from Western science and indigenous knowledge systems. This research focuses on the use of indigenous knowledge in science education offered to grade eight and nine learners in South African schools. As part of this education, science curricula, teaching methodologies and resources therefore should be developed in response to the changing needs of learners and their communities. A close look at the natural science learning area of Curriculum 2005 shows that the South African curriculum developers have under-used indigenous knowledge in the teaching and learning of science at school level. The conceptualization of an inclusive and just science education has been evaded. Perceptions elicited from a small group of academics, well versed in IK, indicate that the majority of South African science teachers will embrace the inclusion of indigenous knowledge in the natural science learning area but will require significant assistance from the Department of Education. The key to deal with this daunting task is for the relevant role players to establish partnerships with the knowers and holders of indigenous knowledge and to operate in a neutral, noble and altruistic manner and that in itself in the present context is highly problematic. / Educational Studies / Thesis (D. Opportunities and impediments in the implementation of environmental education within Curriculum 2005 : a Lusikisiki district case study

This study investigated the opportunities and impediments that were present in C2005 and which impacted on the implementation of environmental education in selected schools in the Lusikisiki District of the Eastern Cape Province. The sample consisted of 12 learners from grade 2 to grade 7, 26 educators and 2 parents from 2 GET band schools. Two Department of Education Officials also formed part of the sample. Interviews were conducted and observations were made within the two schools to get an insight on the position and status of environmental education in the two schools. The study's findings indicated that the position and status of environmental education in the two schools were low although all the stakeholders had a desire to see things improving. The study puts forward some recommendations and review of environmental education implementation strategies. The growth and expansion of the Haven Night Shelter Welfare Organisation has been accompanied by a pattern of emotional and negative dismissals and resignations of senior managerial personnel. The research project explores how the management capacity of the managers could be enhanced through training, development and maintenance functions of human resource management. The literature study focused on reviewing outcomes-based education, training and development methodology. The empirical study involved examining the biographical information of the research participants. It also sought to explore the organisational culture by identifying managerial competencies of skills, interpersonal relationships, management style, attitudes and beliefs. Investigating the knowledge base of participants, included exploring human resource management practices, training and development legislation and labour relations. The conclusions and recommendations are based on the findings of the survey as completed by the participants. The impact of the attitudes of school managers on the implementation of outcomes-based education (obe) in secondary schools

In South Africa Outcomes-based Education (OBE) has been adopted as the approach to education in a new educational dispensation. A point of departure is that school managers have a managerial responsibility to educators. The effective implementation of OBE in secondary schools is essential to the success of OBE. The study investigates the impact of the attitudes of school managers on the implementation of OBE in secondary schools and makes recommendations for the improvement of practice. The problem was conducted by a literature study and empirical investigation using a questionnaire and semi-structured interviews administered to a small sample of principals, deputy principals and heads of departments in selected secondary schools in the Umlazi South district of Kwa-Zulu Natal. Findings showed that school managers in the sample have negative attitudes towards the implementation of OBE. A system approach to an outcomes-based competence profile of education, training and development practitioners in the South African National Defence Force

This study concerns the identification of the particular competences required by education, training and development practitioners (ETD practitioners) in the South African National Defence Force to develop suitable and appropriate career and training strategies. An applied research approach and a primarily quantitative approach were used. Questionnaires were completed by the commanding officers or the training managers, as well as the ETD practitioners at the education, training and development providers in the South African National Defence Force to determine the actual utilisation of ETD practitioners. Descriptive statistics were used to determine the roles, core competences, levels of competences and clusters of competences required by ETD practitioners in the South African National Defence Force. In addition, the actual utilisation of ETD practitioners was compared with a proposed competence profile that was based on the literature study in order to determine the competence gap that has to be addressed by means of career and training strategies. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.(Didactics)
