The effects of alcohol access on the spatial and temporal distribution of crime

Fitterer, Jessica Laura 15 March 2017 (has links)
Increases in alcohol availability have caused crime rates to escalate across multiple regions around the world. As individuals consume alcohol they experience impaired judgment and a dose-response escalation in aggression that, for some, leads to criminal behaviour. By limiting alcohol availability it is possible to reduce crime; however, the literature remains mixed on the best practices for alcohol access restrictions. Variances in data quality and statistical methods have created an inconsistency in the reported effects of price, hour of sales, and alcohol outlet restrictions on crime. Most notably, the research findings are influenced by the different effects of alcohol establishments on crime. The objective of this PhD research was to develop novel quantitative approaches to establish the extent alcohol access (outlets) influences the frequency of crime (liquor, disorder, violent) at a fine level of spatial detail (x,y locations and block groups). Analyses were focused on British Columbia’s largest cities where policies are changing to allow greater alcohol access, but little is known about the crime-alcohol access relationship. Two reviews were conducted to summarize and contrast the effects of alcohol access restrictions (price, hours of sales, alcohol outlet density) on crime, and evaluate the state-of-the-art in statistical methods used to associate crime with alcohol availability. Results highlight key methodological limitations and fragmentation in alcohol policy effects on crime across multiple disciplines. Using a spatial data science approach, recommendations were made to increase spatial detail in modelling to limit the scale effects on crime-alcohol association. Providing guidelines for alcohol-associated crime reduction, kernel density space-time change detection methods were also applied to provide the first evaluation of active policing on alcohol-associated crime in the Granville St. entertainment district of Vancouver, British Columbia. Foot patrols were able to reduce the spatial density of crime, but hot spots of liquor and violent assaults remained within 60m proximity to bars (nightclubs). To estimate the association between alcohol establishment size, and type on disorder and violent crime reports in block groups across Victoria, British Columbia a Poisson Generalized Linear Model with spatial lag effects was applied. Estimates provided the factor increase (1.0009) expected in crime for every additional patron seat added to an establishment capacity, and indicated that establishments should be spaced greater than 300m a part to significantly reduce alcohol-associated crime. These results offer the first evaluation of seating capacity and establishment spacing on alcohol-associated crime for alcohol license decision making, and are pertinent at a time when alcohol policy reform is being prioritized by the British Columbia government. In summary, this dissertation contributes 1) cross-disciplinary policy and methodological reviews, 2) expands the application of spatial statistics to alcohol-attributable crime research, 3) advances knowledge on local scale of effects of different alcohol establishment types on crime, 4) and develops transferable models to estimate the effects of alcohol establishment seating capacity and proximity between establishments on the frequency of crime. / Graduate / 2018-02-27

Hypermobility syndrome and its connection with nerve entrapment syndromes, the example of the thoracic outlet syndrome

Jiquelle, Carine January 2013 (has links)
 ABSTRACT  Background: Since its first mention by Kirk et al. in 1967 and its recognition as a full- fledged rheumatologic disorder, the hypermobility syndrome (HMS) has been increasingly investigated and reported in the scientific literature. Expeditiously renamed benign joint hypermobility syndrome in the patent absence of life-threatening complications, its relatively innocuous character has been progressively reconsidered. In fact, the HMS tends to date to be considered analogous to the Ehlers-Danlos syndrome-hypermobility type, a heritable disease of connective tissue, and therefore emerges as a chiefly rheumatologic disorder with possible widespread reverberations in practically all organs and systems. The condition thence goes beyond the sole involvement of the musculoskeletal system and is recurrently associated with seemingly-unrelated and more or less severe conditions (cardiovascular, pulmonary, gastro- intestinal…). However, neurologic implications of the hypermobility syndrome remain poorly documented, particularly those regarding the peripheral nervous system. Ranking amongst the afflictions of the latter, nerve entrapment syndromes (NES) comprehend a multitude of categories, notably the thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS). And if their pathological mechanisms are generally apprehended...

Assessing the Responses of Adult, Juvenile, and Larval Fish Assemblages to the Closure of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, an Artificial Tidal Pass in Southeastern Louisiana

Cope, Rebecca Weatherall 20 December 2013 (has links)
The creation of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet (MRGO) in 1963 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) represents one of the most catastrophic, anthropogenic stressors ever to impact the Lake Pontchartrain estuary in southeastern Louisiana, USA. The artificial tidal pass provided a direct route from the Gulf of Mexico to New Orleans. It allowed for high saline waters to enter Lake Pontchartrain, resulting in detrimental changes to the biotic community of the Lake and surrounding wetland areas. In July 2009, the USACE closed the MRGO in hopes of restoring natural ecosystems. This study assesses changes in the adult, juvenile, and larval fish assemblages in the Lake from data taken before and after the closure. Water quality data were also examined for shifts related to the MRGO closure. Significant decreases in salinity were found following the closure, however no significant differences were found in adult or larval fish assemblages.

Paviršinių nuotekų Vilniaus mieste užterštumo tyrimai / The research of the pollution of storm water runoff in Vilnius city

Turčenko, Sandra 01 July 2010 (has links)
... [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / This work of scientific research named „The research of the pollution of storm water runoff in Vilnius city“ overlooks the fluctuation of concentration of suspended solids in a storm water runoff. There was also the concept of the first flush phenomenon investigated, which means, that the store of pollutants that had accumulated on paved surface in dry weather are quickly washed off during the beginning of the storm. Investigation of the first flush phenomenon consistent reliability and universality would help to determine the amount of storm water runoff that needs to be purified. Knowing that most of the urban pollutant load is transported in the beginning of a storm and the rest of storm water runoff do not have a significant impact on river ecosystem, water treatment facilities could be designed so that they accept only the first portions of the storm water runoff. In this case, a much smaller volume of runoff storage would be needed to treat and remove urban pollutants. This would allow more efficient and economical control of storm water runoff. The study areas where selected to be the representative drainage basin for a large (Verkių g. Nr1) and small (Sporto g. Nr.2) commercial-residential district. Research results showed that storm water runoff flow and suspended solids concentration change depends on the characteristics of the urban catchment’s area, also from the network storage properties and from the intensity of rainfall... Nenusistovėjusio tekėjimo reiškiniai Kruonio HAE reversiniame kanale ir jų modeliavimas / Modeling of fluctuating flow regime in Kruonis pumped storage hydroelectric plant outlet channel

Vaišvila, Andrius 30 May 2012 (has links)
Darbe nagrinėjami nenusistovėjusio vandens tekėjimo reiškiniai, kurie atsiranda Kruonio HAE reversiniame kanale dėl netolygaus hidroagregatų veikimo juos paleidžiant ir stabdant. Tyrimų tikslas - nustatyti nenusistovėjusio tekėjimo dėsningumus Kruonio HAE reversiniame kanale ir jam artimiausioje Kauno marių dalyje. Tyrimų metodas – hidrodinamikos skaitmeninis modeliavimas MIKE21 aplinkoje. Hidrodinamikos modelyje panaudotas reversinio kanalo dugno skaitmeninis reljefo modelis, sudarytas stačiakampių gardelių tinklo (grido) pavidalu pagal naujausius batimetrinių matavimų rezultatus. Elementarių gardelių matmenys 5x5 m. Modelio pakraštinėms sąlygoms aprašyti pasirenkamos laiko funkcijos, kurios išreiškia kiekvieno HAE hidroagregato vandens debito kitimą laiko atžvilgiu įvairių modeliuojamų HAE darbo režimų scenarijuose. Kitoje modelio atviroje riboje nustatomas fiksuotas Kauno marių vandens lygis. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / This work deals with fluctuations in the water flow regime that occur in the outlet channel of the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant and are produced by uneven running of hydrounits while starting and stopping them. Research purpose: to determine the patterns of fluctuations in the water flow regime that occur in the outlet channel of the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant and the nearest part of Kaunas Lagoon. Research method: numerical modeling of hydrodynamics in the MIKE21 environment. A digital terrain model of the reverse channel bottom consisting of a rectangular grid network (grid), made following the latest bathymetric measurements, was used for the hydrodynamic model. The elementary grid cell dimentions in the model were 5x5 m. To describe the boundary conditions of the model, time functions which express the water flow rate changes over time of each hydrounit in different operating modes of the KPSP were chosen. The fixed Kaunas Reservoir water level was set in the model as the other open boundary. The results of the hydrodynamic modeling were output and recorded at each computational time step and their analysis was performed using MIKE21 software package tools. To evaluate the accuracy and reliability of the hydrodynamic simulation results, a verification of the model was performed, which used the results of visual monitoring of actually measured water level dynamics and flow vector field directions . Analyzing the findings of simulation, consistent patterns of the... [to full text]

January 2018 (has links)
