Latin books published in Paris, 1501-1540

Mullins, Sophie January 2014 (has links)
This is a study of the Parisian Latin book industry in the first four decades of the sixteenth century. It challenges the assumption that the Reformation brought about a profound change in the European print world. Luther's engagement with a mass audience is believed to have led to an increase in the number of vernacular publications produced by printers throughout Europe. This was not the case in Paris. Parisian booksellers traded on their established expertise with certain genres, such as theological texts, educational books, and works by classical authors, to maximise their readership both in Paris and farther afield. Working in close proximity inspired the Parisian bookmen to unity and collaboration rather than enmity and direct competition. When printers, booksellers and publishers collaborated they were able to undertake bigger and riskier projects. Such projects might have involved testing new markets or technologies (such as Greek or music printing), or simply producing a book which required a high capital investment. The familial unity extended to the widows of printers, some of whom were able to capitalise on this and build substantial businesses of their own. This high level of collaboration and the continued focus on the established Latin market give the Parisian book world its very specific character. It also helped Paris build an international reputation for high-quality books.

Life and art in Paris : Stravinsky's Le sacre du printemps

Troyer, Mallory Maria 08 October 2014 (has links)
At the turn of the twentieth century, Paris was an international center for music, art, and fashion. It fostered the creation of a variety of innovative artistic developments and is widely considered to be the birthplace of Modernism. Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps, the epitome of modernist innovation, could only have happened in this unique cultural climate in the context of the Franco-Russian alliance. Stravinsky's early musical development reached its peak in his early ballets, most notably Le Sacre du printemps. This work is a culmination of the multiplicity of cultural activities that include art, scenario, choreography, and music that came together in Paris. In this essay, I will explore the various ways in which the city of Paris in the beginning of the twentieth century influenced Stravinsky's musical voice. My discussion moves from an overview of the city to Stravinsky, exploring the ways in which the Parisian environment shaped his compositional style. To this end, Le Sacre du printemps is viewed as a kind of lightning rod, bringing together many of the fundamental artistic developments of the early twentieth century and reflecting the diverse and modern city in which it was premiered. / text

Idag är vi alla fransmän : En kritisk diskursanalys av medierapporteringen om terrorattentaten i Paris respektive Ankara hösten 2015

Bengtsson, Joel, Nilsson, Hanna January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this study was to examine discourses of two terror attacks conducted in Ankara and Paris and how they were represented in Swedish news media. By analysing the identified discourses the study investigated if the discourses constructed subjects as “we” and “otherness”, which means this study’s aim was to uncover ideological representations. The study examines a total of 16 articles. Critical discourse analysis constitutes the study’s methodological framework, combined with Michel Foucault’s perspective on discourse and how they regulate the construction of reality. The results show that the postcolonial discourse is reproduced and constructs “us” as a western society, whereas Turkey is not included and is therefore constructed as “the other”. The representations in Swedish news media regarding the reporting of the attacks in Paris offer identification for the reader, meanwhile Turkey is marginalized and constructed negatively as a country.

A Comprehensive Biography of Jacques-Jules Bouffil (1783-1868) with a New Performance Edition of His Trio No. 2, Op. 7

Steele, Andrea, Steele, Andrea January 2017 (has links)
Jacques-Jules Bouffil was a prominent nineteenth-century French clarinetist and composer. Much of the existing biographical information for Bouffil is in French, it is often in obscure locations, and the sources available often contain discrepancies. This document provides the most comprehensive and accurate biography to date of clarinetist and composer Jacques-Jules Bouffil through examination of his studies at the Paris Conservatoire, as well as his performance career with the Paris Opéra-Comique orchestra, the Reicha Wind Quintet, and other organizations. The compositional contributions of Bouffil include a number of chamber music pieces, most notably, six trios for three B-flat clarinets, op. 7 nos. 1-3 and op. 8 nos. 1-3. These six trios comprise some of the most substantial works composed for the medium. They deserve to be better known because of their unusual concertant style writing and compositional rigor. This study offers a new performance edition with rehearsal score of Bouffil’s Trio no. 2, op. 7, a work that is not readily available to modern performers.

Offer eller offer? : En kvalitativ studie av den svenska nyhetsrapporteringens framställning av terrordåd / Victim or victim? : A qualitative study of the Swedish news coverage of terror attacks

Ohlsson, Elin, Martinsson, Julia January 2017 (has links)

Different Conceptions of Nature in the Paris Agreement

Björck, Hedda January 2019 (has links)
ABSTRACT In 2015, an Agreement was made in Paris at the 21st conference of the Parties of the UN. The purpose of the Paris Agreement was to collectively target climate change and keep the global warming under 2°C. Since then, the strength of this Agreement has been evaluated in numerous ways, optimists and pessimists present arguments for different theories and opinions. While some argue that the agreement is too weak because of its non-binding features and vagueness, others argue that the very same vagueness has opened up a new door. To contribute with a new perspective, the aim of this study is to describe and analyse different conceptions of nature in the Nationally Determined Contributions submitted to the Paris Agreement by Parties who signed it. Based on previous research about different conceptions of nature, an analytical framework is built and used through a text analysis of some of the Contributions. The findings of this qualitative, descriptive case study are meant to create a deeper understanding of the Contributions made to the Paris Agreement, describing if different conceptions of nature are found and whether this affects the way the Parties aim to tackle the climate crisis.
