A smart sound fingerprinting system for monitoring elderly people living alone

There is a sharp increase in the number of old people living alone throughout the world. More often than not, such people require continuous and immediate care and attention in their everyday lives, hence the need for round the clock monitoring, albeit in a respectful, dignified and non-intrusive way. For example, continuous care is required when they become frail and less active, and immediate attention is required when they fall or remain in the same position for a long time. To this extent, various monitoring technologies have been developed, yet there are major improvements still to be realised. Current technologies include indoor positioning systems (IPSs) and health monitoring systems. The former relies on defined configurations of various sensors to capture a person's position within a given space in real-time. The functionality of the sensors varies depending on receiving appropriate data using WiFi, radio frequency identification (RFIO), ultrawide band (UWB), dead reckoning (OR), infrared indoor (IR), Bluetooth (BLE), acoustic signal, visible light detection, and sound signal monitoring. The systems use various algorithms to capture proximity, location detection, time of arrival, time difference of arrival angle, and received signal strength data. Health monitoring technologies capture important health data using accelerometers and gyroscope sensors. In some studies, audio fingerprinting has been used to detect indoor environment sound variation and have largely been based on recognising TV sound and songs. This has been achieved using various staging methods, including pre-processing, framing, windowing, time/frequency domain feature extraction, and post-processing. Time/frequency domain feature extraction tools used include Fourier Transforms (FTs}, Modified Discrete Cosine Transform (MDCT}, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Mel-Frequency Cepstrum Coefficients (MFCCs), Constant Q Transform (CQT}, Local Energy centroid (LEC), and Wavelet transform. Artificial intelligence (Al) and probabilistic algorithms have also been used in IPSs to classify and predict different activities, with interesting applications in healthcare monitoring. Several tools have been applied in IPSs and audio fingerprinting. They include Radial Basis Kernel (RBF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Decision Trees (DTs), Hidden Markov Models (HMMs), Na'ive Bayes (NB), Gaussian Mixture Modelling (GMM), Clustering algorithms, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), and Deep Learning (DL). Despite all these attempts, there is still a major gap for a completely non-intrusive system capable of monitoring what an elderly person living alone is doing, where and for how long, and providing a quick traffic-like risk score prompting, therefore immediate action or otherwise. In this thesis, a cost-effective and completely non-intrusive indoor positioning and activity-monitoring system for elderly people living alone has been developed, tested and validated in a typical residential living space. The proposed system works based on five phases: (1)Set-up phase that defines the typical activities of daily living (TADLs). (2)Configuration phase that optimises the implementation of the required sensors in exemplar flat No.1. (3)Learning phase whereby sounds and position data of the TADLs are collected and stored in a fingerprint reference data set. (4)Listening phase whereby real-time data is collected and compared against the reference data set to provide information as to what a person is doing, when, and for how long. (5)Alert phase whereby a health frailty score varying between O unwell to 10 healthy is generated in real-time. Two typical but different residential flats (referred to here are Flats No.1 and 2) are used in the study. The system is implemented in the bathroom, living room, and bedroom of flat No.1, which includes various floor types (carpet, tiles, laminate) to distinguish between various sounds generated upon walking on such floors. The data captured during the Learning Phase yields the reference data set and includes position and sound fingerprints. The latter is generated from tests of recording a specific TADL, thus providing time and frequency-based extracted features, frequency peak magnitude (FPM), Zero Crossing Rate (ZCR), and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE). The former is generated from distance measurement. The sampling rate of the recorded sound is 44.1kHz. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is applied on 0.1 seconds intervals of the recorded sound with minimisation of the spectral leakage using the Hamming window. The frequency peaks are detected from the spectrogram matrices to get the most appropriate FPM between the reference and sample data. The position detection of the monitored person is based on the distance between that captured from the learning and listening phases of the system in real-time. A typical furnished one-bedroom flat (flat No.2) is used to validate the system. The topologies and floorings of flats No.1 and No.2 are different. The validation is applied based on "happy" and "unusual" but typical behaviours. Happy ones include typical TADLs of a healthy elderly person living alone with a risk metric higher than 8. Unusual one's mimic acute or chronic activities (or lack thereof), for example, falling and remaining on the floor, or staying in bed for long periods, i.e., scenarios when an elderly person may be in a compromised situation which is detected by a sudden drop of the risk metric (lower than 4) in real-time. Machine learning classification algorithms are used to identify the location, activity, and time interval in real-time, with a promising early performance of 94% in detecting the right activity and the right room at the right time.

Automatic Detection of Structural Deformations in Batteries from Imaging data using Machine Learning : Exploring the potential of different approaches for efficient structural deformation detection / Automatisk detektering av strukturella deformationer i batterier från bilddata med maskininlärning

The increasing occurrence of structural deformations in the electrodes of the jelly roll has raised quality concerns during battery manufacturing, emphasizing the need to detect them automatically with the advanced techniques. This thesis aims to explore and provide two models based on traditional computer vision (CV) and deep neural network (DNN) techniques using computed tomography (CT) scan images of jelly rolls to ensure that the product is of high quality. For both approaches, electrode peaks as keypoints of anodes and cathodes in prismatic lithium battery jelly rolls are detected to extract the geometric features to identify if a particular jelly roll has some structural deformations. For traditional CV methods, the images undergo some pre-processing steps, extraction of foreground through adaptive thresholding, and morphological operations to extract contour edges, followed by applying Harris corner detector to detect electrode peaks. However, this approach shows limitations in detecting small or negative distance differences in deformed images. Furthermore, this study proposes another approach based on supervised transfer learning using pre-trained deep learning models on annotated data. After exploring different architectures, the VGG19 model pre-trained on ImageNet dataset outperformed as compared to other architectures, even with insufficient training data, achieving a maximum accuracy of 93.13 % for 1-pixel distance, 98.87 % for 5-pixel distance and 99.29 % for 10-pixel distance on test data, where the performance metrics, such as Percentage of Correct Keypoint (PCK), Mean-Square Error and Huber loss are utilized. As a result, this baseline proves to be a valuable tool for detecting structural deformations in jelly rolls. Moreover, a GUI-based executable application is developed using both approaches for raising the OK or NG flags for detecting structural deformations in each jelly roll. / Den ökande förekomsten av strukturella deformationer av elektroderna i så kallade jelly rolls har väckt kvalitetsproblem under batteritillverkning, och betonat behovet av att upptäcka dem automatiskt med avancerade tekniker. Denna avhandling syftar till att utforska och tillhandahålla två modeller baserade på traditionell datorseende (CV) och djupa neurala nätverk (DNN) tekniker med hjälp av bilder från datortomografisk skanning (CT) av jelly rolls för att säkerställa att produkten är av hög kvalitet. För båda metoderna detekteras elektrodtoppar som nyckelpunkter på anoder och katoder i prismatiska litiumbatteriers jelly rolls för att extrahera de geometriska egenskaperna för att identifiera om en viss jelly roll har några strukturella deformationer. För traditionella CV-metoder genomgår bilderna några förbehandlingssteg, extraktion av förgrund genom adaptiv tröskling och morfologiska operationer för att extrahera konturkanter, följt av användning av Harris hörndetektor för att upptäcka elektrodtoppar. Denna metod visar dock begränsningar i att detektera små eller negativa avståndsskillnader i deformerade bilder. Vidare föreslår denna studie en annan metod baserad på övervakad överföringsinlärning med förtränade djupinlärningsmodeller på annoterade data. Efter att ha utforskat olika arkitekturer presterade VGG19-modellen förtränad på ImageNet-datasetet bättre jämfört med andra arkitekturer, även med otillräcklig träningsdata, och uppnådde en maximal noggrannhet på 91,56% för 1-pixels avstånd, 97,49% för 5-pixels avstånd och 98,91% för 10-pixels avstånd på testdata, där prestationsmått som procentandel av korrekta nyckelpunkter (PCK), medelkvadratfel och Huber-förlust används. Som ett resultat visar sig denna grundlinje vara ett värdefullt verktyg för att upptäcka strukturella deformationer i jelly rolls. Dessutom har exekverbar applikation med grafiskt gränssnitt utvecklats med båda metoderna för att höja OK/NG-flaggorna för att upptäcka strukturella deformationer i varje jelly roll.

Ce travail de thèse porte sur les outils statistiques pour l'évaluation des maxima de charges de sloshing dans les cuves de méthaniers. Selon les caractéristiques du navire, son chargement et les conditions de navigation, un ballotement hydrodynamique est observé à l'intérieur des cuves, phénomène communément appelé sloshing. La détermination des charges qui s'appliquent à la structure est basée sur des mesures de pression d'impact au moyen d'essais sur maquette. Les maxima de pression par impact, extraits des mesures, sont étudiés. La durée d'un essai est équivalente à 5 heures au réel et insuffisante pour déterminer des maxima de pression associés à de grandes périodes de retour (40 ans). Un modèle probabiliste est nécessaire pour extrapoler les maxima de pression. Le modèle usuel est une loi de Weibull. Comme ce sont les valeurs extrêmes des échantillons qui nous intéressent, les ajustements sont aussi effectués par les lois des valeurs extrêmes et de Pareto généralisées via les méthodes de maximum par bloc et d'excès au-dessus d'un seuil.L'originalité du travail repose sur l'emploi d'un système alternatif, plus pertinent pour la capture des maxima de pression et d'une quantité de 480 heures de mesures disponible pour les mêmes conditions d'essai. Cela fournit une distribution de référence pour les maxima de pression et nous permet d'évaluer la pertinence des modèles sélectionnés. Nous insistons sur l'importance d'évaluer la qualité des ajustements par des tests statistiques et de quantifier les incertitudes sur les estimations obtenues. La méthodologie fournie a été implémentée dans un logiciel nommé Stat_R qui facilite la manipulation et le traitement des résultats. / This thesis focuses on statistical tools for the assessment of maxima sloshing loads in LNG tanks. According to ship features, tank cargo and sailing conditions, a sloshing phenomenon is observed inside LNG tanks. The determination of sloshing loads supported by the tank structure is derived from impact pressure measurements performed on a test rig. Pressure maxima per impact, extracted from test measurements, are investigated. Test duration is equivalent to 5 hours in full scale. This duration is not sufficient to determine pressure maxima associated with high return periods (40 years). It is necessary to use a probabilistic model in order to extrapolate pressure maxima. Usually, a Weibull model is used. As we focus on extreme values from samples, fittings are also performed with the generalized extreme value distribution and the generalized Pareto distribution using block maximum method and peaks over threshold method.The originality of this work is based on the use of an alternate measurement system which is more relevant than usual measurement system to get pressure maxima and a 480 hours measured data available for same test conditions. This provides a reference distribution for pressure maxima which is used to assess the relevance of the selected probabilistic models. Particular attention is paid to the assessment of fittings quality using statistical tests and to the quantification of uncertainties on estimated values.The provided methodology has been implemented in a software called Stat_R which makes the manipulation and the treatment of results easier.

Essays on the dynamics of cross-country income distribution and intra-household time allocation

This thesis contributes to two completely unrelated debates in the economic literature, similar only in the relatively high degree of controversy characterizing each one. <p>The first part is methodological and macroeconomic in nature, addressing the question of whether the distribution of income across countries is converging (i.e. are the poor catching up to the rich?) or diverging (i.e. are we witnessing the formation of two exclusive clubs, one for poor countries and another one for rich countries?). Applications of the simple Markov model to this question have generated evidence in favor of the divergence hypothesis. In the first chapter, I critically review these results. I use statistical inference to show that the divergence results are not statistically robust, and I explain that this instability of the results comes from the application of a model for discrete data to data that is actually continuous. In the second chapter, I reposition the whole convergence-divergence debate by placing it in the context of Silverman’s classic survey of non-parametric density estimation techniques. This allows me to use the basic notions of fuzzy logic to adapt the simple Markov chain model to continuous data. When I apply the newly adapted Markov chain model to the cross-country distribution question, I find evidence against the divergence hypothesis, and this evidence is statistically robust. <p>The second part of the thesis is empirical and microeconomic in nature. I question whether observed differences between husbands’ and wives’ participation in labor markets are due to different preferences or to different constraints. My identification strategy is based on the idea that the more power an individual has relative to his/her partner, the more his/her actions will reflect his/her preferences. I use 2001 PSID data on cohabiting couples to estimate a simultaneous equations model of the spousal time allocation decision. My results confirm the stylized fact that specialization and trade does not explain time allocation for couples in which the wife is the primary breadwinner, and suggest that power could provide a more general explanation of the observations. My results show that wives with relatively more power choose to work more on the labor market and less at home, whereas husbands with more power choose to do the opposite. Stochastic Modelling of Daily Peak Electricity Demand Using Value Theory

MSc (Statistics) / Department of Statistics / Daily peak electricity data from ESKOM, South African power utility company for the period, January 1997 to December 2013 consisting of 6209 observations were used in this dissertation. Since 1994, the increased electricity demand has led to sustainability issues in South Africa. In addition, the electricity demand continues to rise everyday due to a variety of driving factors. Considering this, if the electricity generating capacity in South Africa does not show potential signs of meeting the country’s demands in the subsequent years, this may have a significant impact on the national grid causing it to operate in a risky and vulnerable state, leading to disturbances, such as load shedding as experienced during the past few years. In particular, it is of greater interest to have sufficient information about the extreme value of the stochastic load process in time for proper planning, designing the generation and distribution system, and the storage devices as these would ensure efficiency in the electrical energy in order to maintain discipline in the grid systems. More importantly, electricity is an important commodity used mainly as a source of energy in industrial, residential and commercial sectors. Effective monitoring of electricity demand is of great importance because demand that exceeds maximum power generated will lead to power outage and load shedding. It is in the light of this that the study seeks to assess the frequency of occurrence of extreme peak electricity demand in order to come up with a full electricity demand distribution capable of managing uncertainties in the grid system. In order to achieve stationarity in the daily peak electricity demand (DPED), we apply a penalized regression cubic smoothing spline to ensure the data is non-linearly detrended. The R package “evmix” is used to estimate the thresholds using the bounded corrected kernel density plot. The non-linear detrended datasets were divided into summer, spring, winter and autumn according to the calender dates in the Southern Hemisphere for frequency analysis. The data is declustered using Ferro and Segers automatic declustering method. The cluster maxima is extracted using the R package “evd”. We fit Poisson GPD and stationary point process to the cluster maxima and the intensity function of the point process which measures the frequency of occurrence of the daily peak electricity demand per year is calculated for each dataset. The formal goodness-of-fit test based on Cramer-Von Mises statistics and Anderson-Darling statistics supported the null hypothesis that each dataset follow Poisson GPD (σ, ξ) at 5 percent level of significance. The modelling framework, which is easily extensible to other peak load parameters, is based on the assumption that peak power follows a Poisson process. The parameters of the developed i models were estimated using the Maximum Likelihood. The usual asymptotic properties underlying the Poisson GPD were satisfied by the model. / NRF

The design of the new stage of the Slovene National Theatre in Ljubljana adheres to, among other things, the motto of the “TACE” (Theatre Architecture in Central Europe) project, i.e. a search of forms and types of buildings for the "New Theatre for the 21st Century". Therefore, I confront three topics: 1/ the conventional binocular conception for the drama chorus of the National Theatre, 2/ the unconventional solution of the "TACE" and 3/ the urban conception of the location, the so-called "Southern Square", designed by Josip Plečnik. Ad1/ The serious and classical feeling of the conventional form of the theatre hall is required, for this is the National Theatre. Slovenia, as a relatively young state, strives to build and strengthen its historical and national existence; therefore, the classical conception should be preferred because most plays dealing with the national identity are written for this type of theatre. Unlike the unconventional type of “performance” theatres that tend to present international rather than national art. Ad 2/ The search for spatial forms of unconventional and interactive staging of traditional types, such as ballet, opera, musical or drama as well as new forms such as “performance” resulted in a clear conclusion - “black box”. The ideal theatre of the future is infinitely multifunctional neutral space equipped with technologies that enable using the area for virtually any purpose. The principle comes very close to that of film studios, yet equipped with theatrical and other technologies. Ad 3/ A controversial location in the centre of Ljubljana, which has been waiting for an urban conception since the 1930s. It is situated at the end of Plečnik’s “Ljubljana diameter”, with the obelisk in the French Revolution Square as the opposite pole. The unfinished axis obelisk-square-theatre is quite apparent. The location features a clearance and an inner block with a poor urban development; yet it also features the so-called Knafijev prehod, a socially well functional part. The building is divided into 2 functional units - the theatre with its halls, lounge, gallery and cafe, and a commercial passage with the theatre’s administration. The facade of the theatre is a composite of several elements: From left, a decoration consisting of a ruptured pillar with a statue of an actor with a background of the fly, as we move to the right, a “curtain” going down in a curve from a glass “heaven” of the theatre’s hall towering over the passage, out of which rises the solid pylon of the gallery made of half-transparent material LitraConTM. This composition shifts the axis of the lounge beyond the axis of the park to the axis of the diameter and makes thus room for service access. The theatre’s area with the passage beneath is linked by a number of newels which can spin and thus close and in this way enable changing the mode of the passage from a lounge to a public area. The conception of the theatre's area combines sections 1/ and 2/ mentioned above. It consists of the classical stage with a trap cellar, portal and fly, which can be used a classical opera-glasses theatre for as many as 800 persons in the audience and/or, if the iron curtain is closed, as a small scene with approximately 100 seats. The remaining area functions as experimental and consists of a revolving auditorium and 4 stages whose back walls feature panorama windows.

Transmission, reflection and absorption in Sonic and Phononic Crystals

Tesis por compendio / [EN] Phononic crystals are artificial materials formed by a periodic arrangement of inclusions embedded into a host medium, where each of them can be solid or fluid. By controlling the geometry and the impedance contrast of its constituent materials, one can control the dispersive properties of waves, giving rise to a huge variety of interesting and fundamental phenomena in the context of wave propagation. When a propagating wave encounters a medium with different physical properties it can be transmitted and reflected in lossless media, but also absorbed if dissipation is taken into account. These fundamental phenomena have been classically explained in the context of homogeneous media, but it has been a subject of increasing interest in the context of periodic structures in recent years as well. This thesis is devoted to the study of different effects found in sonic and phononic crystals associated with transmission, reflection and absorption of waves, as well as the development of a technique for the characterization of its dispersive properties, described by the band structure. We start discussing the control of wave propagation in transmission in conservative systems. Specifically, our interest is to show how sonic crystals can modify the spatial dispersion of propagating waves leading to control the diffractive broadening of sound beams. Making use of the spatial dispersion curves extracted from the analysis of the band structure, we first predict zero and negative diffraction of waves at frequencies close to the band-edge, resulting in collimation and focusing of sound beams in and behind a 3D sonic crystal, and later demonstrate it through experimental measurements. The focusing efficiency of a 3D sonic crystal is limited due to the strong scattering inside the crystal, characteristic of the diffraction regime. To overcome this limitation we consider axisymmetric structures working in the long wavelength regime, as a gradient index lens. In this regime, the scattering is strongly reduced and, in an axisymmetric configuration, the symmetry matching with acoustic sources radiating sound beams increase its efficiency dramatically. Moreover, the homogenization theory can be used to model the structure as an effective medium with effective physical properties, allowing the study of the wave front profile in terms of refraction. We will show the model, design and characterization of an efficient focusing device based on these concepts. Consider now a periodic structure in which one of the parameters of the lattice, such as the lattice constant or the filling fraction, gradually changes along the propagation direction. Chirped crystals represent this concept and are used here to demonstrate a novel mechanism of sound wave enhancement based on a phenomenon known as "soft" reflection. The enhancement is related to a progressive slowing down of the wave as it propagates along the material, which is associated with the group velocity of the local dispersion relation at the planes of the crystal. A model based on the coupled mode theory is proposed to predict and interpret this effect. Two different phenomena are observed here when dealing with dissipation in periodic structures. On one hand, when considering the propagation of in-plane sound waves in a periodic array of absorbing layers, an anomalous decrease in the absorption, combined with a simultaneous increase of reflection and transmission at Bragg frequencies is observed, in contrast to the usual decrease of transmission, characteristic in conservative periodic systems at these frequencies. For a similar layered media, backed now by a rigid reflector, out-of-plane waves impinging the structure from a homogeneous medium will increase dramatically the interaction strength. In other words, the time delay of sound waves inside the periodic system will be considerably increased resulting in an enhanced absorption, for a broadband spectral range. / [ES] Los cristales fonónicos son materiales artificiales formados por una disposición periódica de inclusiones en un medio, pudiendo ambos ser de carácter sólido o fluido. Controlando la geometría y el contraste de impedancias entre los materiales constituyentes se pueden controlar las propiedades dispersivas de las ondas. Cuando una onda propagante se encuentra un medio con diferentes propiedades físicas puede ser transmitida y reflejada, en medios sin pérdidas, pero también absorbida, si la disipación es tenida en cuenta. La presente tesis está dedicada al estudio de diferentes efectos presentes en cristales sónicos y fonónicos relacionados con la transmisión, reflexión y absorción de ondas, así como el desarrollo de una técnica para la caracterización de sus propiedades dispersivas, descritas por la estructura de bandas. En primer lugar, se estudia el control de la propagación de ondas en transmisión en sistemas conservativos. Específicamente, nuestro interés se centra en mostrar cómo los cristales sónicos son capaces de modificar la dispersión espacial de las ondas propagantes, dando lugar al control del ensanchamiento de haces de sonido. Haciendo uso de las curvas de dispersión espacial extraídas del análisis de la estructura de bandas, se predice primero la difracción nula y negativa de ondas a frecuencias cercanas al borde de la banda, resultando en la colimación y focalización de haces acústicos en el interior y detrás de un cristal sónico 3D, y posteriormente se demuestra mediante medidas experimentales. La eficiencia de focalización de un cristal sónico 3D está limitada debido a las múltiples reflexiones existentes en el interior del cristal. Para superar esta limitación se consideran estructuras axisimétricas trabajando en el régimen de longitud de onda larga, como lentes de gradiente de índice. En este régimen, las reflexiones internas se reducen fuertemente y, en configuración axisimétrica, la adaptación de simetría con fuentes acústicas radiando haces de sonido incrementa la eficiencia drásticamente. Además, la teoría de homogenización puede ser empleada para modelar la estructura como un medio efectivo con propiedades físicas efectivas, permitiendo el estudio del frente de ondas en términos refractivos. Se mostrará el modelado, diseño y caracterización de un dispositivo de focalización eficiente basado en los conceptos anteriores. Este incremento está relacionado con una ralentización progresiva de la onda conforme se propaga a través del material, asociado con la velocidad de grupo de la relación de dispersión local en los planos del cristal. Un modelo basado en la teoría de modos acoplados es propuesto para predecir e interpretar este efecto. Se observan dos fenómenos diferentes al considerar pérdidas en estructuras periódicas. Por un lado, si se considera la propagación de ondas sonoras en un array periódico de capas absorbentes, cuyo frente de ondas es paralelo a los planos del cristal, se produce una reducción anómala en la absorción combinada con un incremento simultáneo de la reflexión y transmisión a las frecuencias de Bragg, de forma contraria a la habitual reducción de la transmisión, característica de sistemas periódicos conservativos a estas frecuencias. Aquests fenòmens fonamentals s'han explicat clàssicament en el context de medis homogenis, però també ha sigut un tema de creixent interés en el context d'estructures periòdiques en els últims anys. Aquesta tesi doctoral tracta de l'estudi de diferents efectes en cristalls fonònics i sònics lligats a la transmissió, reflexió i absorció d'ones, així com del desenvolupament d'una tècnica de caracterització de les propietats dispersives, descrites mitjançant la estructura de bandes. En primer lloc, s'estudia el control de la propagació ondulatori en transmissió en sistemes conservatius. Més específicament, el nostre interés és mostrar com els cristalls sonors poden modificar la dispersió espacial d'ones propagants donant lloc al control de l'amplària per difracció dels feixos sonors. Mitjançant les corbes dispersió espacial obtingudes de l'anàlisi de l'estructura de bandes, es prediu, en primer lloc, la difracció d'ones zero i negativa a freqüències próximes al final de banda. El resultat és la collimació i focalització de feixos sonors dins i darrere de cristalls de so. Després es mostra amb mesures experimentals. L'eficiència de focalització d'un cristall de so 3D està limitada per la gran dispersió d'ones dins del cristall, que és característic del règim difractiu. Per a superar aquesta limitació, estructures axisimètriques que treballen en el règim de llargues longituds d'ona, i es comporten com a lents de gradient d'índex. En aquest règim, la dispersió es redueix enormement i, en una configuració axisimètrica, a causa de l'acoblament de la simetría amb les fonts acústiques que radien feixos sonors, l'eficiència de radiació s'incrementa significativament. D'altra banda, la teoria d'homogeneïtzació es pot utilitzar per a modelar, dissenyar i caracteritzar un dispositiu eficient de focalització basat en aquests conceptes. Per un costat, al considerar la propagació d'ones sonores en el plànol en un array periòdic de capes absorbents, s'observa una disminució anòmala de l'absorció i es combina amb un augment simultani de reflexió i transmissió en les freqüències de Bragg que contrasta amb la usual disminució de transmissió, característica dels sistemes conservatius a eixes freqüències. Per a un medi similar de capes, amb un reflector rígid darrere, les ones fora del pla incidint l'estructura des de un medi homogeni, augmentaran considerablement la interacció.
