Mallorga Hernández, Victoria Liliana 13 December 2018 (has links)

Lévano Castillo, Fernando Luis 21 October 2014 (has links)
Tesis

Subtle way out : cinematic thought, belief in the world, and four contemporary filmmakers

Parks, Tyler Munroe January 2015 (has links)
In Cinema 1: The Movement-Image and Cinema 2: The Time-Image, Gilles Deleuze distinguishes two regimes of audiovisual thought. In the regime of the movement-image, such thought is constituted by two processes. The first, differentiation/integration, expresses a whole that changes through the intermediary of the shifting relationships between the objects and people on screen. The second, specification, gives images a determinate function in a sensory-motor schema, through which perceptions are linked to actions in rational intervals of movement. With the regime of the time-image, as I understand it, thought instead comes to mean, as Deleuze puts it in Foucault, to experiment and problematize, and “knowledge, power, and the self are the triple root of a problematization of thought” (95). It is my argument in this thesis that Deleuze’s work on cinema is of great utility in carrying out filmic analyses that seek to detect and draw out the consequences of strategies of filmmaking that make knowledge, power, and self problematic. Furthermore, such a mode of analysis is particularly valuable in attending to new films that confront us with novel means of organising problematic audiovisual thought. My arguments are made through consideration of two films each from four directors: Wong Kar-wai, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Pedro Costa, and Apichatpong Weerasethakul. While there are many important differences between the works of these filmmakers, their films nevertheless lend themselves to an approach that seeks to determine how thought becomes problematic in specific cases. Similarities and resonances are brought out between these films and those that Deleuze uses himself in making his arguments and shaping his concepts, but I also identify new problems that we encounter in the works of these filmmakers, which extend the range of meaning of some of those concepts. One such concept that is of particular importance in this thesis is “belief in the world”. There is always something in those films that pass into the regime of the time-image that is asystematic, which breaks up and multiplies thought, multiplies the thinkers we are made to inhabit. Our relation to the world of the film is therefore unstable and uncertain, and calls for belief, since films themselves in this regime produce new links between humans and the world, rather than firmly establishing a realistic state of things, a temporal and spatial matrix that accords with that which we experience in everyday existence. Such films thus make us receptive to a thought different from that interiorised thought through which, as Nietzsche writes, the apparatus of knowledge abstracts, simplifies, and takes possession of the world and others (Will, no. 503, 274).

This dissertation focuses on the trajectory of Pedro Montenegro. Born in Spain in 1663, he served at the General Hospital of Madrid where he accomplished his technical training. Years later, he immigrated to America , where, in 1691, became involved in the Company of Jesus, and even as a religious, continued to perform crafts involving the healing arts, both in Córdoba, and in the Apostles and Martyrs missions, where he died in 1728. In order to reconstitute his trajectory, we used the documentation of institutions that were part of his life, such as the Hospital of Madrid, Protomedicato and the Company of Jesus. The authorship of Materia Medica Misionera written in 1710 is attributed to the Jesuit brother Montenegro, a work considered to be one of the main treaties of medical botany of the colonial period. The analysis of the work enabled us to discuss aspects concerning the authorship and its preparation process and also to identify and evaluate the appropriations that its author did of European conceptions of medicine as well as the resulting reinterpretation obtained by the contact with the indigenous people and experiences that he made with the Native American medicinal plants.

This study aims to to analyze some paintings from the gaucho artist Pedro Weingärtner, a regional theme that address the representation of the European immigrant and the colonization process in Rio Grande do Sul, from the period of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The analysis of these paintings was made through the understanding of memory and biography of its creator, so that it was possible to understand the type of identity of the immigrant present in the paintings. It was intended to deeply understand how this social type was represented in the paintings, their characteristics, their way of life, the gaps of sociability and work, the landscapes and socio-cultural elements. The relevance of this research is given by the absence of a major study on Pedro Weingärtner and also for the contribution in the field of studies of history and of images, once it contributes - in an interdisciplinary way - with studies about German immigration, pictures and fine arts. It was found throughout the research the representation of an immigrant strongly allied to rural areas and work on the land, seeking the construction of the image of a social type that is both a worker in the countryside as the main causative agent of transformation of the natural landscape Brazilian.

Inserted in the context of his Prelature of São Felix do Araguaia Pedro Casaldáliga matured his expression as a poet in the measure of his commitment to the liberation of his people. Every trace of his human and poetic thought, therefore, can be understood by the search for meaning to be a Christian witness of the proposal of the Kingdom of God. His poetry is integrated into the theoretical universe known as Liberation Theology and pervades the various experiences lived by the poet Casaldáliga in the region of Araguaia, Central America and Europe. The meaning of his poetry will be researched from his development as a poet, starting from his first verses until gaining emphasis his prophetic poetry. In a reflection on the historical retrospection of the process of colonization of the American Continent and, specifically, of Brazil, we take into account the colonizing function of the Christian faith that arrived here with the caravels of the Spanish and Portuguese conquerors, but also, Same faith, in defense of the conquered peoples. It follows that there is a knowledge on the part of the oppressed that seeks to resist the oppressor ever since. Understanding the poetry of Pedro Casaldáliga as knowledge that resists and liberates the colonized oppressed proves to be of fundamental importance for the analysis of the search for meaning of poetry in contexts of life marked by relations of oppression, resistance and hope of liberation / Esta dissertação tem como objetivo a investigação da poesia de Pedro Casaldáliga, que abordamos a partir de um recorte de parte da sua produção poética e, busca perceber um sentido específico.

On Violence and Tyranny: Meditation on Political Violence in the Chronicles of Pero Lopez de Ayala

Rodriguez, Veronica January 2016 (has links)
On Violence and Tyranny examines historiography as a vehicle for the production of a theory of tyrannicide in the aftermath of the murder of Pedro I de Castilla (1369). The thesis of this work is that by considering the royal chronicle as a vehicle and locus for political theorization, we can appreciate the formulation of a theory of tyrannicide as a medium for dynastic legitimation that is not reducible to political propaganda. Rather, it becomes a meditation about monarchy itself, the limits of power, and the underlying causes and consequences of political violence. The chronicle of the king Pedro's rule conceives an economy of violence coded in terms of saber (political wisdom), justice and the law, as a means to face the ideological, political, and social challenges that civil war and regicide pose to a community. I will focus on two fragments of the chronicle, a pair of letters attributed to a wise Moor that the chronicler chose to include in a second stage of his composition and that establish extra textual connections to other political genres such as the specula principum and political prophecy. Through them, I will explore how a theory of tyrannicide allows the chronicler to confront three major problems that regicide poses. First, how to explicate the dynastic break that king Pedro’s murder brought about, and minimize the discontinuity that the advent of a new, and illegitimate, dynasty (the Trastámaras) represented for a historical tradition that deeply valued the continuity of history. Second, how a theory of tyrannicide served to repair the broken ties provoked by the civil war. And third, how to represent that founding violence, the violence against a sovereign, to render it legitimate, but not available for anyone else to exploit.
