The city has to accommodate these differences and be adapted architectonically to enable the integration of all its dwellers. The idea driving this project is the belief that architectural planning is a potential ally in furthering the social inclusion of people with a disability or reduced mobility. This study thus deals with issues related to their access to cultural facilities, particularly by raising questions concerning the specific legislation and technical standards created to help people with disabilities. Specifically, the aim was to analyze accessibility in seven municipal cultural institutions in São Carlos city in upstate São Paulo, two of which are in outlying municipal districts. Public cultural buildings were chosen for study in the belief that a person with disability should have the same opportunities to participate in cultural life as any other person, thus becoming integrated into society. Cultural spaces should be duly adapted and accessible to the various forms of perception, locomotion and communication characteristic of an inclusive society. All cultural buildings in the chosen area were visited and, using a checklist stipulated by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (NBR 9050, 2004), the public spaces were classed as adequate or inadequate with respect to their accessibility to people with a disability (either visual or physical). The data collected was subjected to quantitative analysis by scoring the commonest accessibility resources, according to their adequacy, as well as the resources not installed. The results show that in all the items analysed, both in the internal and external spaces of the buildings under study, there is a need for adaptations, installations or the building of equipment that allows the physically or visually disabled to interact with the environment in the cultural spaces they choose. By indicating the state of the art in the chosen city, this study contributed to the body of knowledge in the area of accessibility.

In a city like Natal, (5o South) the incidence of sunrays in any type of design should be a constant concern for all the architects. Besides, this habit of avoiding insolation in the environment is not a common practice. Within this context, the present work has the objective to dig deep into the knowledge of solar control, studying some cases and verifying its function according to the orientation and the original design of the building, having in mind if the shade elements usually used in the region have achieved their purpose of providing protection against the incidence of direct sun rays. This study considers the position of the shade element (horizontal and vertical), the angle formed between them and the respective facades, and the local of the buildings in relation to their orientation during the summer, winter and equinox solstice. As supporting instruments the solar map of the city and the protractor, for measuring shade angles, were used. It was concluded that in all the cases studied, it was not possible to obtain the maximum use of the elements. It was verified that the best type of shade element (more efficient) for the city of Natal is the mixed type (horizontal and vertical) and that the vertical shade elements are more efficient in the early mornings and late afternoon. The horizontal shade elements are used more effective at midday. We intend to present the results of this study to the architects in the region in order to show them the correct ways of using the shade elements according to the possible orientation on the facade, as a supporting tool at the time of designing a project as well as a subsidy for further discussions on the elaboration of the new urban standards for the city of Natal/RN / O presente trabalho apresenta o uso de elementos arquitet?nicos como forma de prote??o aos raios solares em edif?cios p?blicos.

Approaches to energy efficiency in China’s large-scale public building

Yu, Wenhe January 2010 (has links)
In recent years, the energy shortage has become a barrier to social development as there is a shortage of resources, especially non-renewable resources. In order to improve the current situation of human settlement for future generations, a series of environmental protection activities and rational utilizations of natural resources have been carried out at a global level on the theme of "Sustainable Development". Along with the quantitative growth of Chinese public buildings, especially the Large-Scale Public Buildings, the levels of energy consumption are rising and this phenomenon has been seen as a key point of energy management from a national view. This paper discusses the realities of energy consumption and the energy-saving policies of public buildings in the world’s major developed countries, and sums up the current condition of Chinese energy consumption in relation to public buildings. With regard to these factors, this paper tries to find approaches for solving the existing problems in each construction section. Less developed construction technology in China leads to a waste of materials and labor force. There is a lack of professional personnel to handle the operational management and a lack of consideration for energy efficiency in the designing process. There is not a suitable framework for compiling statistics and data on energy consumption. There are still many management problems such as inadequate policy standards in operability or implementation, unclear positioning in governmental management, ineffective incentive or punitive mechanisms, and a defective state system which results directly in an undeveloped service system for energy efficiency. Based on all of the problems listed above, this paper suggests solutions in four areas, namely Policy, Energy Statistics, Management and Education, in order to give academic support for the overhaul of Large-Scale Public Buildings towards greater energy efficiency in China.

Metamorphosis - Making plastic transparent

Rydholm, Rosanna January 2021 (has links)
In this thesis project I try to make visible the complex problems behind the plastic pollution crisis, the skewed ideas of synthetic plastic and recycling we as consumers are taught, and in what way architecture can help make these systems visible. This is achived through a design method of growth and transformation using plastic waste to create a building that uncovers what would otherwise not bee seen.
