Aufgrund von steigenden Energiekosten und einer sukzessive steigenden öffentlichen sowie politischen Forderung nach Umweltbewusstsein und Nachhaltigkeit, ist die Effizienzsteigerung von Gesamtsystemen einer der treibenden Kräfte für innovative, technologische Neuheiten geworden. Besonders bei der Entwicklung von verbrennungsmotorisch angetriebenen Fahrzeugen wurden z.B. durch die Hybridisierung von Antriebssträngen, die die Rekuperation von kinetischer Energie ermöglichen, Technologien zur Energieeinsparung etabliert. Da bei Verbrennungsmotoren ein hoher Anteil der im Kraftstoff gespeicherten Energie technologiebedingt als Abwärme im Abgas verloren geht, bietet die Wärmerekuperation ein weiteres hohes Potential für weitere Einsparungen. Diese ist z.B. mit Hilfe von thermoelektrischen Generatoren (TEG) möglich, die einen Wärmestrom direkt in elektrische Energie umwandeln. Zur effizienten TEG-Systemgestaltung ist ein hoher Temperaturgradient über dem thermoelektrisch aktivem Material notwendig, der wiederum zu kritischen thermomechanischen Spannungen im Bauteil führen kann. Diese werden zum einen durch die unterschiedlichen Temperaturausdehnungskoeffizienten der verschiedenen Materialien und zum anderen durch die mechanische Anbindung auf der heißen und kalten Seite des TEG verursacht. Somit liegt ein Zielkonflikt zwischen dem thermoelektrischen Systemwirkungsgrad und der mechanischen Festigkeit des Bauteils vor. In dieser Arbeit wird mit Hilfe einer mehrkriteriellen Parameteroptimierung eines vollparametrisierten FE-Modells des TEG in ANSYS WORKBENCH eine Methode vorgestellt, den thermoelektrischen Wirkungsgrad bei gleichzeitiger Reduktion der thermomechanischen Spannungen zu optimieren. Zur Optimierung kommt dabei ein genetischer Algorithmus der MATLAB GLOBAL OPTIMIZATION TOOLBOX zum Einsatz. Der Modellaufbau wird in ANSYS WORKBENCH mit der Makro-Programmiersprache JSCRIPT realisiert. Als Ziel- und Bewertungsfunktionen wird die mechanische Belastung jedes Bauteils im TEG ausgewertet und dessen elektrische Leistungsdichte berechnet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass mit Hilfe der vorgestellten Methodik eine paretooptimale Lösung gefunden werden kann, die den gestellten Anforderungen entspricht.

A FRAMEWORK FOR OPTIMIZING PROCESS PARAMETERS IN POWDER BED FUSION (PBF) PROCESS USING ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK (ANN)

<p>Powder bed fusion (PBF) process is a metal additive manufacturing process, which can build parts with any complexity from a wide range of metallic materials. Research in the PBF process predominantly focuses on the impact of a few parameters on the ultimate properties of the printed part. The lack of a systematic approach to optimizing the process parameters for a better performance of given material results in a sub-optimal process limiting the potentialof the application. This process needs a comprehensive study of all the influential parameters and their impact on the mechanical and microstructural properties of a fabricated part. Furthermore, there is a need to develop a quantitative system for mapping the material properties and process parameters with the ultimate quality of the fabricated part to achieve improvement in the manufacturing cycle as well as the quality of the final part produced by the PBF process. To address the aforementioned challenges, this research proposes a framework to optimize the process for 316L stainless steel material. This framework characterizes the influence of process parameters on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the fabricated part using a series of experiments. These experiments study the significance of process parameters and their variance as well as study the microstructure and mechanical properties of fabricated parts by conducting tensile, impact, hardness, surface roughness, and densification tests, and ultimately obtain the optimum range of parameters. This would result in a more complete understanding of the correlation between process parameters and part quality. Furthermore, the data acquired from the experimentsare employed to develop an intelligent parameter suggestion multi-layer feedforward (FF) backpropagation (BP) artificial neural network (ANN). This network estimates the fabrication time and suggests the parameter setting accordingly to the user/manufacturers desired characteristics of the end-product. Further, research is in progress to evaluate the framework for assemblies and complex part designs and incorporate the results in the network for achieving process repeatability and consistency.</p><br>

Feasibility Study on Additive Manufacturing of Copper Windings using Electron Beam Melting

Within the framework of this thesis, the electron beam melting of pure copper for the purpose of producing electrical windings was examined. The conventional manufacturing process of copper windings was investigated, and the potential advantages offered by the design freedom inherent in the electron beam melting process were explored. A comprehensive parameter study was conducted to optimize the existing production parameters for the electron beam melting of pure copper, with a specific focus on achieving the desired material properties suitable for electric motor windings. Moreover, according to additive manufacturing possibilities, conceptual winding models were developed and subsequently were fabricated in a laboratory setting using electron beam melting. The investigation revealed a notable correlation between the achievable wall thickness and the focus offset. A focused electron beam, which was achieved with a focus offset of 17 mA, allowed for the production of thinner walls with reduced surface roughness. Additionally, the study highlighted that the density of the manufactured parts decreased as the hatch offset increased, particularly posing a more critical impact on smaller cross-sectional areas than larger ones. Furthermore, implementing a double-scanned contour for the hatch contributed to diminishing roughness while simultaneously increasing the maximum density to 99.6 %. Influencing the electrical conductivity of printed copper samples through heat treatment was successfully demonstrated, resulting in a conductivity of 91.7% ± 1.8% IACS post-heat treatment. / Inom ramen för denna avhandling undersöktes elektronstrålesmältningen av ren koppar i syfte att producera elektriska lindningar. Den konventionella tillverkningsprocessen av kopparlindningar undersöktes, och de potentiella fördelarna som erbjuds av designfriheten som är inneboende i elektronstrålesmältningsprocessen undersöktes. En omfattande parameterstudie genomfördes för att optimera befintliga produktionsparametrar för elektronstrålesmältning av ren koppar, med särskilt fokus på att uppnå önskade materialegenskaper lämpliga för elmotorlindningar. Dessutom, i enlighet med additiva tillverkningsmöjligheter, utvecklades konceptuella lindningsmodeller och tillverkades därefter i laboratoriemiljö med användning av elektronstrålesmältning. Undersökningen avslöjade en anmärkningsvärd korrelation mellan den möjliga väggtjockleken och fokusförskjutningen. En fokuserad elektronstråle, som uppnåddes med en fokusförskjutning på 17 mA, möjliggjorde produktion av tunnare väggar med minskad ytjämnhet. Dessutom visade studien att densiteten hos de tillverkade delarna minskade när avståndet mellan smältlinjerna ökade, vilket i synnerhet innebar en mer kritisk påverkan på mindre tvärsnittsareor än större. Dessutom bidrog implementeringen av en dubbelskannad kontur för luckan till att minska grovheten samtidigt som den maximala densiteten ökade till 99,6 %. Att påverka den elektriska ledningsförmågan hos tryckta kopparprover genom värmebehandling demonstrerades framgångsrikt, vilket resulterade i en ledningsförmåga på 91,7 % ± 1,8 % IACS efter värmebehandling.

Bacterial leaching from dairy shed effluent applied to a fine sandy loam under flood and spray irrigations

Land application of wastes has become increasingly popular, to promote nutrient recycling and environmental protection, with soil functioning as a partial barrier between wastes and groundwater. Dairy shed effluent (DSE), may contain a wide variety of pathogenic micro-organisms, including bacteria (e.g. Salmonella paratyphyi, Escherichia coli. and Campylobacter), protozoa and viruses. Groundwater pathogen contamination resulting from land-applied DSE is drawing more attention with the intensified development of the dairy farm industry in New Zealand. The purpose of this research was to investigate the fate and transport of bacterial indicator-faecal coliform (FC) from land-applied DSE under different irrigation practices via field lysimeter studies, using two water irrigation methods (flood and sprinkler) with contrasting application rates, through the 2005-2006 irrigation season. It was aimed at better understanding, quantifying and modelling of the processes that govern the removal of microbes in intact soil columns, bridging the gap between previous theoretical research and general farm practices, specifically for Templeton soil. This study involved different approaches (leaching experiments, infiltrometer measurements and a dye infiltration study) to understand the processes of transient water flow and bacterial transport; and to extrapolate the relationships between bacterial transport and soil properties (like soil structure, texture), and soil physical status (soil water potential ψ and volumetric water content θ). Factors controlling FC transport are discussed. A contaminant transport model, HYDRUS-1D, was applied to simulate microbial transport through soil on the basis of measured datasets. This study was carried out at Lincoln University’s Centre for Soil and Environmental Quality (CSEQ) lysimeter site. Six lysimeters were employed in two trials. Each trial involved application of DSE, followed by a water irrigation sequence applied in a flux-controlled method. The soil columns were taken from the site of the new Lincoln University Dairy Farm, Lincoln, Canterbury. The soil type is Templeton fine sandy loam (Udic-Ustochrept, coarse loamy, mixed, mesic). Vertical profiles (at four depths) of θ and ψ were measured during leaching experiments. The leaching experiments directly measured concentrations of chemical tracer (Br⁻ or Cl⁻) and FC in drainage. Results showed that bacteria could readily penetrate through 700 mm deep soil columns, when facilitated by water flow. In the first (summer) trial, FC in leachate as high as 1.4×10⁶ cfu 100 mL⁻¹ (similar to the DSE concentration), was detected in one lysimeter that had a higher clay content in the topsoil, immediately after DSE application, and before any water irrigation. This indicates that DSE flowed through preferential flow paths without significant treatment or reduction in concentrations. The highest post-irrigation concentration was 3.4×10³ cfu 100 mL⁻¹ under flood irrigation. Flood irrigation resulted in more bacteria and Br⁻ leaching than spray irrigation. In both trials (summer and autumn) results showed significant differences between irrigation treatments in lysimeters sharing similar drainage class (moderate or moderately rapid). Leaching bacterial concentration was positively correlated with both θ and ψ, and sometimes drainage rate. Greater bacterial leaching was found in the one lysimeter with rapid whole-column effective hydraulic conductivity, Keff, for both flood and spray treatments. Occasionally, the effect of Keff on water movement and bacterial transport overrode the effect of irrigation. The ‘seasonal condition’ of the soil (including variation in initial water content) also influenced bacterial leaching, with less risk of leaching in autumn than in summer. A tension infiltrometer experiment measured hydraulic conductivity of the lysimeters at zero and 40 mm suction. The results showed in most cases a significant correlation between the proportion of bacteria leached and the flow contribution of the macropores. The higher the Ksat, the greater the amount of drainage and bacterial leaching obtained. This research also found that this technique may exclude the activity of some continuous macropores (e.g., cracks) due to the difference of initial wetness which could substantially change the conductivity and result in more serious bacterial leaching in this Templeton soil. A dye infiltration study showed there was great variability in water flow patterns, and most of the flow reaching deeper than 50 cm resulted from macropores, mainly visible cracks. The transient water flow and transport of tracer (Br⁻) and FC were modelled using the HYDRUS-1D software package. The uniform flow van Genuchten model, and the dual-porosity model were used for water flow and the mobile-immobile (MIM) model was used for tracer and FC transport. The hydraulic and solute parameters were optimized during simulation, on the basis of measured datasets from the leaching experiments. There was evidence supporting the presence of macropores, based on the water flow in the post-DSE application stage. The optimised saturated water content (θs) decreased during the post-application process, which could be explained in terms of macropore flow enhanced by irrigation. Moreover, bacterial simulation showed discrepancies in all cases of uniform flow simulations at the very initial stage, indicating that non-equilibrium processes were dominant during those short periods, and suggesting that there were strong dynamic processes involving structure change and subsequently flow paths. It is recommended that management strategies to reduce FC contamination following application of DSE in these soils must aim to decrease preferential flow by adjusting irrigation schemes. Attention needs to be given to a) decreasing irrigation rates at the beginning of each irrigation; b) increasing the number of irrigations, by reducing at the same time the amount of water applied and the irrigation rate at each irrigation; c) applying spray irrigation rather than flood irrigation.

With the help of general rational Krylov decompositions we reveal the connections between seemingly different approximation methods, such as the Rayleigh–Ritz or shift-and-invert method, and derive new methods, for example a restarted rational Krylov method and a related method based on rational interpolation in prescribed nodes. Various theorems known for polynomial Krylov spaces are generalized to the rational Krylov case. Computational issues, such as the computation of so-called matrix Rayleigh quotients or parallel variants of rational Arnoldi algorithms, are discussed. We also present novel estimates for the error arising from inexact linear system solves and the approximation error of the Rayleigh–Ritz method. Rational Krylov methods involve several parameters and we discuss their optimal choice by considering the underlying rational approximation problems. In particular, we present different classes of optimal parameters and collect formulas for the associated convergence rates. Often the parameters leading to best convergence rates are not optimal in terms of computation time required by the resulting rational Krylov method. We explain this observation and present new approaches for computing parameters that are preferable for computations. We give a heuristic explanation of superlinear convergence effects observed with the Rayleigh–Ritz method, utilizing a new theory of the convergence of rational Ritz values. All theoretical results are tested and illustrated by numerical examples. Numerous links to the historical and recent literature are included.

Penicillium nordicum è un importante contaminante di salumi, rappresentanando il 10 % e il 26 % della popolazione di Penicillium spp . isolati , rispettivamente dall'aria e dai prodotti carnei stagionati in un'indagine gestita in Italia ( Battilani et al. , 2007). Diverse colonie di P. nordicum isolate dai salumi hanno dimostrato di essere importanti produttori di ocratossina A , OTA ( Sansom e Frisvad , 2004 . Pietri et al, 2006 ; . Battilani et al , 2010). Attualmente, l'impostazione appropriata delle condizioni ambientali (temperatura, umidità relativa e circolazione dell'aria ), è l'unico strumento accettato per impedire la crescita incontrollata di P. nordicum all'interno degli impianti di stagionatura attraverso una accurata analisi dei punti critici di controllo e l’ideazione di un relativo piano HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) ben struttutato ( Asefa et al , 2011; Virgili et al , 2012). Anche se il sistema HACCP è stato applicato con successo nel settore alimentare ci sono rischi per la sicurezza alimentare non attentamente considerati. Questo è particolarmente vero per quanto riguarda i rischi micotossigeni associati ai prodotti alimentari di origine animale. Il termine "rischi micotossigeni" è utilizzato da Asefa et al. ( 2011) per descrivere lieviti patogeni e metaboliti secondari tossici prodotti da specie fungine tossigene che contaminano i prodotti alimentari e incidono sulla sicurezza alimentare. La maggior parte dei piani HACCP nelle attività di trasformazione alimentare, come ad esempio la produzione di formaggi e di prodotti carnei stagionati, tiene in considerazione principalmente il rischio derivante da agenti batterici (Arvanitoyannis e Mavropoulos, 2000; Barbuti e Parolari, 2002) anche se tali prodotti alimentari vengono spesso contaminati da funghi micotossigeni e dai loro metaboliti (Spotti et al 1989; Spotti et al , 2001a; Battilani et al 2007). Pertanto, dovrebbe essere cruciale definire un piano HACCP specificamente incentrato sui rischi micotossigeni. L'identificazione, il controllo e la standardizzazione della micoflora superficie dei salumi è fondamentale per preservare la sicurezza delle produzioni e la salute dei consumatori . Questo è il contesto in cui deve essere valutata l’efficacia e l’affidabilità per l’identificazione delle popolazioni di Penicillium spp di interessante per la produzione alimentare. In questo contesto , il progetto di ricerca di questa tesi di dottorato ha cercato di approfondire le conoscenze su tali tematiche con l'intento di limitare il rischio micotossigeno nella catena di produzione dei prodotti carnei stagionati. Sono stati affrontati i seguenti argomenti: 1 . studio della composizione e dinamica della microflora fungina presente sulla superficie dei salumi (prodotto testato, salame) e l'aria di ambienti di stagionatura tenendo conto dell'influenza di alcuni parametri di processo (inoculo starter, temperatura, fase produttiva). 2 . sviluppo di un metodo MALDI TOF MS per l'identificazione di Penicilium a livello di specie per le prospettive future di screening diretti della microflora presente sui salumi. 3 . confronto e integrazione di diverse tecniche, come l'analisi morfologica, l’analisi molecolare e l’analisi tramite spettrometria di massa, per l'identificazione delle specie di Penicillium presenti nei salumi. 4 . valutazione dei lieviti selezionati, isolati dalla superficie di prosciutto crudo, per competere con P. nordicum ed inibire l'accumulo di OTA nella prospettiva del loro uso come starter superficiali con funzione di agenti di biocontrollo. / Penicillium nordicum is an important contaminant of cured meat products, representing 10% and 26% of the Penicillium spp. isolated, respectively, from the air or the products in a survey managed in Italy (Battilani et al., 2007). Several P. nordicum cured meat isolates proved to be important producers of ochratoxin A, OTA (Sansom and Frisvad, 2004; Pietri et al., 2006; Battilani et al., 2010). Currently, the appropriate setting of environmental conditions (temperature, relative humidity and air circulation), is the only accepted tool to prevent the uncontrolled growth of P. nordicum inside dry-curing plants through a carefully structured Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) plan (Asefa et al., 2011; Virgili et al., 2012). Even if the HACCP system has been successfully applied in the food industry, there are food safety hazards not carefully considered. This is especially true with regard to mycotoxigenic hazards associated with animal food products. The term “mycotoxigenic hazards” is used by Asefa et al. (2011) to describe pathogenic yeasts and toxic secondary metabolites of toxigenic moulds that contaminate food products and affect food safety. Most HACCP plans in food processing activities, such as the production of cheese and dry-cured meat products, considered mainly bacterial agents (Arvanitoyannis and Mavropoulos, 2000; Barbuti and Parolari, 2002), even if such food products get often contaminated with mycotoxigenic fungi and their metabolites (Spotti et al 1989; Spotti et al., 2001a; Battilani et al 2007). Therefore, it should be crucial to define a HACCP plan specifically focused on the mycotoxigenic hazards. The identification, control and standardization of the surface mycoflora of cured meat products is mandatory to preserve the productions safety and the consumers health. This is the context of the effectiveness and reliability evaluation for the Penicillium spp. identification methods of interesting species for food production. In this context, the research project of this PHD thesis tried to fill some gaps of knowledge with the attempt to limit the mycotoxigenic risk in the cured meat products chain. The following topics were faced: 1. study of the composition and dynamic of fungal microflora present on the surface of cured meat products (salami) and the air of seasoning environments taking into account the influence of some process parameters (starter inoculum, curing temperature, stage of seasoning). 2. development of a MALDI TOF MS method for the identification of Penicilium at species level for future direct screening perspectives of the microflora present on cured meat products. 3. comparison and integration of different techniques, as morphological, molecular and mass spectral analysis, for the identification of Penicillium species in cured meat products. 4. evaluation of selected yeasts, isolated from dry-cured ham surface, to compete with P. nordicum and to inhibit OTA accumulation in the perspective of their use as surface starter biocontrol agents.

Tuning of machine learning algorithms for automatic bug assignment

In software development projects, bug triage consists mainly of assigning bug reports to software developers or teams (depending on the project). The partial or total automation of this task would have a positive economic impact on many software projects. This thesis introduces a systematic four-step method to find some of the best configurations of several machine learning algorithms intending to solve the automatic bug assignment problem. These four steps are respectively used to select a combination of pre-processing techniques, a bug report representation, a potential feature selection technique and to tune several classifiers. The aforementioned method has been applied on three software projects: 66 066 bug reports of a proprietary project, 24 450 bug reports of Eclipse JDT and 30 358 bug reports of Mozilla Firefox. 619 configurations have been applied and compared on each of these three projects. In production, using the approach introduced in this work on the bug reports of the proprietary project would have increased the accuracy by up to 16.64 percentage points.
