When Parents Come Out as Parents of Gay and Lesbian Children: A Transformation of the Self.

Stewart, Crissy E. 01 May 2002 (has links)
This study examines how and why parents of gay and lesbian children come to join a support and advocacy group when same-sex attraction and sexuality are still considered deviant and immoral by the majority of society. Based on participant observation of and interviews with parents in two separate support and advocacy groups this study examines how parents come to define themselves in terms of the issues they are fighting for, in this case gay and lesbian acceptance, inclusion, and equality. This research also examines how parents formulate new religious convictions to satisfy their new parental role as supporter and advocate of their gay or lesbian child, all the while maintaining that they are normal, moral, and good parents, replacing this courtesy stigma with exemplary parenting. In addition, this study explores how parents re-tell stories from their child’s past, using “retrospective interpretation” that foretell their child’s gay or lesbian identity in adulthood. These stories rely on any deviation from culturally accepted and expected gender roles and norms, which are then interpreted as “evidence” or “indicators” that the child was always gay or lesbian and would be in adulthood as well. Furthermore, the parents create a new self based on their religious alterations and the location of artifacts in the child’s past that predict a gay or lesbian identity.

Johansson, Madeleine, Pennerborn, Camilla January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was to do a descriptive study in order to receive knowledge about to what extent parents with a drug addiction have participated in general parental support programs and how they have experienced the support. A part of the purpose of the study was to seek knowledge about whether these parents have been offered special support. The study has been done with qualitative interviews, seven respondent interviews and eight informant interviews. The result of the study shows that parents with a drug addiction in a very low extent have participated in the general parental support programs offered by the local authorities and the county council. According to the results of this study, this is due partly to the fact that the parents feel that the midwives and nurses have not been interested in their situation or taken it seriously, partly also because they feel outside in relation to other parents. When it comes to special support, the result shows that the parents have not been offered parental support directed to them as persons. The informant interviews also show that there is no special support directed to this group of parents.</p>

The Impact Of Parental Control And Support On The Development Of Chronic Self-regulatory Focus

Dogruyol, Burak 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
This study examined the interplay between parenting behaviors and self-regulatory focus in a sample of 320 university freshmen. Considering the theoretical assumptions and cultural differences, it is expected that specific parenting behaviors predict prevention and/or promotion self-regulatory focus. Especially, the dimensions of parental psychological control were expected to predict prevention focus. Participants completed multiple measures of parenting behaviors and self-regulatory focus. Self-regulatory focus was measured using both direct and indirect measures (i.e., value domains) considering the theoretical formulations underlying the indirect measures. The measures of specific parenting behaviors included parental support, behavioral control, psychological control, and overprotection. Results suggested that psychological control mainly predicts prevention focus. Whereas parental blaming and love withdrawal predicted prevention focus, guilt induction predicted promotion focus under certain conditions. Besides, parental overprotection was related with higher levels of both promotion and prevention self-regulatory focuses. As expected, parental behavioral control was associated with lower levels of prevention focus and parental support was associated with higher levels of promotion focus. Examination of the relationships between both types of self-regulatory focuses and the subscales of indirect measure comprised of value domains yielded results contradictory to the original formulations. For instance, contrary to the theoretical expectations, value domain of security was strongly associated with promotion focus rather than prevention focus, signifying a potential cultural difference. Finally, results have suggested that direct and indirect measures of self-regulatory focuses do not consistently overlap and they may measure different constructs. Results were discussed on the basis of the previous work in this area and further exploration was suggested to clarify the link between direct and indirect measures of self-regulatory focus and their links to parenting behaviors.

PARENT DEVELOPMENT AND WELLBEING DURING THE LAUNCHING STAGE OF PARENTHOOD

Keys, Deborah F 01 January 2015 (has links)
At the present time, the young adult transition into adulthood has been extended, which has also extended the launching stage. One result of the extended launching stage is that parents are now involved in active parenting longer than before. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of the extended launching stage in key areas (the parent- child relationship and parent support) on parental emotional wellbeing. The contribution of this research is that it adds to the limited body of knowledge about normative launching stage parenting practices and outcomes. This dissertation is a three chapter manuscript that uses data from the Longitudinal Study of Generations. Chapter one provides the background for the dissertation. Chapter two, using cross-sectional analyses, examines the effect of parent support and the parent-child relationship on parental emotional wellbeing between two parent cohorts—1985 and 2005. Chapters three and four are longitudinal studies that use cross-sectional regressions and fixed effect models to estimate parent role changes involving parental role evaluation and wellbeing at four time waves—1994, 1997, 2000, and 2005. Chapter three focuses on the effect of changes in parent support on parents’ emotional wellbeing. Chapter four investigates the impact of the parent-child relationship on parent role evaluation. The results of the analyses show that compared to their parents at the same point in their life course, contemporary parents have a lower quality of life. Results also find that over time, wellbeing is impacted by the quality of the parent-child relationship, but supporting young adult offspring does not impact self-esteem.

Birth Orders Effect on Non-Suicidal Self-Injury and Perceived Parental Support / Placering i syskonskarans effekt på icke-suicidalt självskadebeteende och upplevt föräldrastöd

Kadric, Delila, Löfquist, Ludvig January 2018 (has links)
In this study we investigated the effects of birth order and gender on nonsuicidalself-injury and perceived parental support. This study’s main purposewas to challenge the current use of birth order in psychology. The studyincluded a short questionnaire assessing birth order, gender, perceived parentalsupport and non-suicidal self-injury. The questionnaire was distributed throughan online survey among young adults attending a university in a medium sizedcity in Sweden (N = 202). To explore the perceived parental support, we usedThe Social Provisions scale and non-suicidal self-injury was assessed by theDeliberate Self-harm Inventory, short 9-item scale. The results of these studiesshowed that birth order had no significant effect on non-suicidal self-injury orperceived parental support. On the other hand, the results suggested that genderhad a significant effect on non-suicidal self-injury, with females engaging onnon-suicidal injury more frequently than men. This contradicts earlier studieswhere no effect of gender has been present in young adults. Gender had noapparent effect on perceived parental support.

Religiosity, Parental Support, and Formal Volunteering Among Teenagers

Paintsil, Isaac 01 May 2019 (has links)
Few countries can boast of having the culture of formal volunteering seen in the United States. In explaining this phenomenon, many empirical studies have found religiosity significant in predicting behaviors among young adults, adults, and the elderly. However, teens (13 – 17 years) have not attracted much attention from researchers, though they possess the time and resources most needed to volunteer. Using data from the National Study on Youth and Religion (NSYR) Wave 1, this study examines the relationship between formal volunteering and teens’ individual (religious salience and religious experience) and collective religiosity (religious tradition, church attendance, and religious youth group participation). Parental variables and teen demographics are also tested using a three-stage ordinal logistic regression. Regarding individual religiosity, the results suggested a significant relationship between teens’ religious experiences and formal volunteering. In addition, parents can induce formal volunteering by encouraging their teens to volunteer and participate in religious youth groups.

“det är ett sätt att jobba som gör jobbet väldigt roligt” : En kvalitativintervjustudie om familjebehandlares upplevelser av att arbeta med Marte meo-metoden / “it is a way to do the job that makes the job a lot of fun” : qualitativeinterview study of therapists’ experiences of working with the Marte meo-method

Kedvek, Vera January 2020 (has links)
The aim of this qualitative study is to explore what Marte meo-therapists have experienced working with the Marte meo parenting supporting method. Seven therapists have been interviewed through semi-structured qualitative interviews. Antonovsky’s framework of Sense of Coherence was applied in the analysis of the results (Antonovsky, 2005). The main findings of the study illustrate that the Marte meo-method is experienced to have benefits for both the families and the therapists maintaining a high level of sense of coherence. According to the therapists the parents got a better knowledge of themselves and their children contributing to an enhanced relationship, better communication, and interplay. The Marte meo-method was perceived as a helpful tool allowing skills development among staff and “makes the job a lot of fun” – as one of them had said. However, several respondents experienced a lack of managerial support and leadership which reduced the sense of coherence.

Föräldrars upplevelser kring barns sömnproblem och av barnhälsovårdens sömnrådgivning : En kvalitativ intervjustudie / Parents' experiences of child sleep problems and child health care counseling : A qualitative interview study

Gerszbejn, Sharon, Kvant, Amanda January 2023 (has links)
Background: Sleep problems in children include difficulties with sleep onset and sleep continuity. About 20-30% are thought to have sleep problems, with 5-6% being severe and persistent. This can lead to a deterioration in the quality of life for parents. The consequence of sleep deprivation is associated with exhaustion, stress and depression. Child health care service (CHCS) has an important role in assessing sleep problems and guiding parents. Previous research shows that parents feel that CHCS lacks knowledge about sleep problems in children. Aim: The purpose of the study was to elucidate parents' experiences of sleep problems in children. Method: The data was collected digitally through semi-structured interviews with parent’s (n=11). Recruitment took place via social media through a convenience sampling. The data was then analysed according to the method of qualitative content analysis described by Burnard et al. (2008). Result: The analysis resulted in two main categories: The child's sleep problems are life-changing and Child Health Care is inadequate regarding sleep and six subcategories. These are: The feeling of being caught off guard, The consequences of sleep deprivation on the parent's health, Experiences of maturity and change over time, The feeling of not being taken seriously, Unqualified advice and Insufficient knowledge of children's sleep problems. Conclusion: Parents' experience is that the child's sleep problems have a wide-ranging impact on the family. Based on parents' experiences, there is room for improvement of CHCS's competence, handling and treatment, where the key is that the child's sleep problems are perceived to be generalized. The conclusion is that when a generalization of the child's sleep problems is not perceived as reasonable for the situation, it can lead to CHCS missing the core of the assessment about the extent of the child's sleep problems.
