COMPUTATIONAL METHODS FOR DESIGNING NEW PASSIVE FLUID BORNE NOISE SOURCE REDUCTION STRATEGIES IN HYDRAULIC SYSTEMS

Leandro Henschel Danes (9750938) 14 December 2020 (has links)
<p>Hydraulic systems have many applications in the construction, transportation, and manufacturing sectors. Recent design trends involve systems with higher working pressures and more compact systems, which are advantageous because of power density increase. However, these trends imply higher forces and larger vibration amplitudes while having lesser mass and damping, leading to higher noise levels. Meanwhile, hydraulic machinery started prospecting new applications with tighter noise regulations, a trend which was also pushed by the electrification tendency in several fields of transportation and agriculture. One method to attain noise mitigation is passive-noise canceling techniques have the advantage of not introducing energy to the system. This approach arranges pressure ripple waves in a destructive pattern by projecting a hydraulic circuit's geometry, configuration, and features.</p> <p> </p> <p>This dissertation aims to predict fluid-borne noise sources and investigate passive noise-canceling solutions for multiple operations conditions targeting to impact many hydraulic systems and a broad range of operating conditions. Primarily a coupled system model strategy that includes a one-dimensional line finite element model is developed. The line model predicts pressure wave generation and propagation. The model features versatility since parameters like line diameter and material can be discretized node by node. Simulations are compared to measured data in a realistic novel hydraulic hybrid transmission for validation. </p> <p> </p> <p>Subsequently, an extensive numerical investigation is performed by setting fixed parameters along the hydraulic lines' length and comparing several isolated geometric properties in simulation. The developed line model is also used to study the influence of line features such as diameter and extent of the conduit. Cost-effective and simple passive solution solutions such as Quincke tubes (parallel lines), expansion chambers, and closed branches are selected and investigated on simulation. Four target pressure ripples are chosen as indicators for summarizing passive line elements behavior. The frequency-domain behavior of the pressure ripple peaks regarding the line's length is identified and isolated in simulation at the 50-5000Hz frequency spectrum. An experiment test rig is designed to implement these solutions and the experiments show three developed passive elements as practical and effective solutions for reducing fluid borne noise sources. The selected designs yielded noise source attenuation over most of the frequency spectrum measured with piezoelectric pressure variation sensors and accelerometers in different positions in the hydraulic circuit. Sound pressure measurements detected reductions over 3dB in the best cases. </p> <p> </p> <p>Also, a passive interference approach based on the principle of secondary source flow ripple cancellation was conceptualized, modeled, and implemented in a tandem axial-piston unit. The strategy consists of setting the phase between the two synchronous units to accomplish destructive interference in targeted unit harmonics. Two indexing strategies are investigated first analytically and then on simulation. One of the indexing strategies was implemented in a pre-existent commercial axial-piston tandem unit. Experiment results confirmed effectiveness for the first and third unit’s harmonics, where reductions over 15dB on pressure ripple were measured.</p> <p> </p> <p>Finally, a fluid-structure interaction based on the poison coupling principle is developed using the method of characteristics. Transfer functions of the pipeline accelerations versus the pressure ripples on lines calculated on simulation and later obtained experimentally to highlight ta critical vibration band from 2000Hz to 3000Hz with high acceleration response.</p> <p> </p><br>

A Study of Injection Locking in Optoelectronic Oscillator

Prakasha, Prarthana 30 September 2020 (has links)
The random fluctuations of signal phase of an oscillator limit the precision of time and frequency measurements. The noise and long-term stability of the system’s oscillator or clock is of major importance in applications such as optical and wireless communications, high-speed digital electronics, radar, and astronomy. The Optoelectronic Oscillator (OE Oscillator), a new class of time delay oscillator with promise as a low-phase noise source of microwave carriers, was introduced by Steve Yao and Lute Malek in 1996. The OE Oscillator combines into a closed loop an RF photonic link and an RF chain. The RF photonic link consists of a laser, electro-optic modulator, optical fibre delay line, and a photo-receiver that together provide an RF delay. An RF chain consists of one or more amplifiers and a RF resonator that together provide the sustaining amplification and the frequency selectivity necessary for single mode oscillation of the loop. The low loss of optical fibres enables the attainment of delays that correspond to optical fibre lengths of several kilometers. It is the long delay, unattainable in an all electronic implementations that is responsible for the superior phase noise performance of an OE Oscillator. In this thesis the fundamental principles of operation of an OE Oscillator are described and the principal sources of in-loop phase fluctuations that are responsible for phase-noise identified. This lays the ground for an exposition of the mechanism that describes the perturbation of a time delay oscillator by injection into the loop of a carrier that is detuned in frequency from the natural frequency of the oscillator. For sufficiently small detuning the oscillator can become phase locked to the injected carrier. The model presented in the thesis generalises the traditional Yao-Maleki and Leeson model to include all the important features that describe the injection locking dynamics of an OE Oscillator. In particular the common assumptions of single mode oscillation and weak injection are removed. This is important to correctly predict the effect of injection locking on the spurious peaks in the phase noise spectrum corresponding to the side-modes of a time delay oscillator. Simulation results are presented in order to validate the dynamics of the oscillator under injection and analytic results on the lock-in range and phase noise spectrum. A 10 GHz OE Oscillator with a single 5km delay line is used as an example in the simulation illustration.

Contribution de la Théorie des Valeurs Extrêmes à la gestion et à la santé des systèmes / Contribution of extreme value theory to systems management and health

Diamoutene, Abdoulaye 26 November 2018 (has links)
Le dernier chapitre porte sur la prédiction d'éventuelles victimes dans l'Aviation Générale Américaine à partir des données historiques en utilisant l'approche "Peaks-Over Threshold" / The operation of a system in general may at any time be affected by an unforeseen incident. When this incident has major consequences on the system integrity and the quality of system products, then it is said to be in the context of extreme events. Thus, increasingly researchers have a particular interest in modeling such events with studies on the reliability of systems and the prediction of the different risks that can hinder the proper functioning of a system. This thesis takes place in this very perspective. We use Extreme Value Theory (EVT) and extreme order statistics as a decision support tool in modeling and risk management in industry and aviation. Specifically, we model the surface roughness of machined parts and the reliability of the associated cutting tool with the extreme order statistics. We also did a modeling using the "Peaks-Over Threshold, POT" approach to make predictions about the potential victims in the American General Aviation (AGA) following extreme accidents. In addition, the modeling of systems subjected to environmental factors or covariates is most often carried out by proportional hazard models based on the hazard function. In proportional hazard models, the baseline risk function is typically Weibull distribution, which is a monotonic function. The analysis of the operation of some systems like the cutting tool in the industry has shown that a system can deteriorated on one phase and improving on the next phase. Hence, some modifications have been made in the Weibull distribution in order to have non-monotonic basic risk functions, more specifically, the increasing-decreasing risk function. Despite these changes, taking into account extreme operating conditions and overestimating risks are problematics. We have therefore proposed from Gumbel's standard distribution, an increasingdecreasing risk function to take into account extreme conditions, and established mathematical proofs. Furthermore, an example of the application in the field of industry was proposed. This thesis is organized in four chapters and to this must be added a general introduction and a general conclusion. In the first chapter, we recall some basic notions about the Extreme Values Theory. The second chapter focuses on the basic concepts of survival analysis, particularly those relating to reliability analysis by proposing a function of increasing-decreasing hazard function in the proportional hazard model. Regarding the third chapter, it deals with the use of extreme order statistics in industry, particularly in the detection of defective parts, the reliability of the cutting tool and the modeling of the best roughness surfaces. The last chapter focuses on the prediction of potential victims in AGA from historical data using the Peaks-Over Threshold approach.

Etude de la perméabilisation de la membrane plasmique et des membranes des organites cellulaires par des agents chimiques et physiques / Study of plasma membrane and organelles membranes permeabilization by chemical and physical agents

Ménorval, Marie-Amélie de 25 November 2013 (has links)
It is possible to permeabilize the cellular plasma membrane by using chemical agents (as polyethylen glycols or diméthylsulfoxyde) or physical agents (as ulstrasounds or electric pulses). This permeabilization can be reversible or not, meaning that after the permeabilization, the membrane recovers its integrity and its hemi-permeable properties. These techniques can be used for the uptake of medicines or nucleic acids or to generate cellular fusions. A recent approach, the molecular dynamics, uses numerical simulations to predict the effects of permeabilizing agents at the molecular scale, allowed generating of new data to understand the molecular mechanisms that are not completely known yet.The pulses so called “classical” in electropermeabilization, from the range of the ten of milliseconds to the hundred of microseconds and with a field amplitude in the range of 100 kV/m, can only permeabilize the plasma membrane. However, more recently, shorter pulses, so called nanopulses (few nanosecondes) and with an higher field amplitude (in the range of 10 MV/m) have been used and allow to affect also cellular organelles membranes. This thesis is, in a first time, about the permeabilizing effects of a chemical gent (the diméthylsulfoxyde, DMSO) by comparing predictive models from molecular dynamics with experiments in vitro on cells. The numerical model predicts three regimes of action depending on the DMSO concentration. Used at low concentration, there is a plasma membrane deformation. The use of an intermediate concentration lead to membrane pores formation and higher DMSO concentrations resulted in membrane destruction. The experiments done in vitro on cells confirmed these results using the following of permeabilization markers. This study has been compared to permeabilization due to a physical agent (electric pulses).Secondly, it is about the development and the use of a new cell exposure device for nanopulses that permit to apply very high electric fields and to observe induced cellular effects simultaneously by microscopy. To finish, this device has been used with nanopulses to generate calcium peaks in mesenchymal stem cells that are presenting spontaneous calcium oscillations in correlation to their differentiation state.. These induced peaks are due to the release of the calcium stored in organelles and/or to plasma membrane permeabilization leading to a intramembrane calcium flux establishment. It is also possible to use microsecond pulses to generate calcium peaks in these cells. In this case, the calcium peaks are due to the plasma membrane permeabilization . By changing the amplitude of the applied electric fields and the presence or the absence of external calcium, it is possible to manipulate cytosolic calcium concentrations by mobilizing internal or external calcium. One feature of these new tools is to be triggered and stopped instantly without reminiscence, unlike chemical molecules permitting the production of calcium peaks. These tools could therefore lead to a better understanding of the involvement of calcium in mechanisms such as differentiation, migration or fertilization.

AA-CAES physical modelling: integration of a 1D TES code and plant performance analysis

Santo, Luca January 2018 (has links)
The focus of this thesis work was the development of an approachto couple a previosly existing Thermal Energy Storage (TES) modelwritten in C++ with a Simulink/Simscape plant model to simulate anAdvanced Adiabatic Compressed Air Energy Storage (AA-CAES) plant. After the creation and validation of such tool, the complete modelwas used to run simulations, with the aim of assessing the AA-CAESplant's performance under multiple patterns of charge anddischarge. Most of the works found in the literature only provide values ofstorage efficiency obtained from analytical approaches, whilethose that use simulation tools provide average values ofefficiencies when the plant is performing a series of identicalcycles of charge and discharge. During this thesis project, instead, simulations were performed for consecutive irregularcycles determined as the plant response to the electric grid powerrequest. The average efficiency values obtained provide thereforea better representation of how the plant would perform in realapplications. The results show that, under the assumptions made, the AA-CAESplant's overall storage efficiency is influenced very weakly byalterations of the charge-discharge patterns, and that goodperformances can be expected not only for identical chargedischargeconsucutive cycles, but for any pattern that observesthe cavern pressure limits, as long as the thermal energy storageis sized wisely. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was performed in order toassess the influence of turbomachinery efficiency on overallstorage efficiency, for a specified plant layout. The results showthat the turbine efficiency is the most affecting parameter to theplant's performance, while the impact of the main compressors'sinefficiency is mitigated by the thermal recovery that takes placein the TES.The present work confirms that AA-CAES is a promising technologyand that storage efficiencies above 70% can be achieved even inrealistic production scenarios. Finally, future steps for more accurate simulations of plants'performances and more detailed energy production scenarios areproposed.MSc ET 18007Examinator: Joakim WidénÄmnesgranskare: Ane HåkanssonHandledare:

Modeling Extreme Values / Modelování extrémních hodnot

Shykhmanter, Dmytro January 2013 (has links)
Modeling of extreme events is a challenging statistical task. Firstly, there is always a limit number of observations and secondly therefore no experience to back test the result. One way of estimating higher quantiles is to fit one of theoretical distributions to the data and extrapolate to the tail. The shortcoming of this approach is that the estimate of the tail is based on the observations in the center of distribution. Alternative approach to this problem is based on idea to split the data into two sub-populations and model body of the distribution separately from the tail. This methodology is applied to non-life insurance losses, where extremes are particularly important for risk management. Never the less, even this approach is not a conclusive solution of heavy tail modeling. In either case, estimated 99.5% percentiles have such high standard errors, that the their reliability is very low. On the other hand this approach is theoretically valid and deserves to be considered as one of the possible methods of extreme value analysis.

Löfgren, Louise January 2021 (has links)
The transport sector is facing a transition from combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. Through this action the carbon dioxide emissions in the transport sector can be reduced. The purpose of this study is to observe how an increased power use from electric vehicle charging (EVC) affects the local electricity grid in Gävle. The study also addresses how different charging techniques affect the electricity grid. The background of this study is to the increase awareness of the capacity of the electricity grid. There is a need from the electricity grid company to look over the impact on the grid from EVC. This could also be useful for others looking over the impact on the electricity grid from EVC. This is a hot topic and lots of other studies look over the different aspects of EVC. Previous studies also examine different types of charging techniques and how smart charging reduces the negative impact on the electricity grid. Smart charging is a way to adjust the EVC by regulating it after different parameters and connecting the entire electrical grid. This study simulates existing measured values of the low-voltage grid in Gävle and various types of EVC. This study examines the power use of existing measurement data as well as load current and voltage drops in the electricity grid with different load profiles in four different areas. Results from this study shot that EVC affects the electricity grid, to what extent depends on the type of charging technology used and the dimensions of the electricity grid. The study shows that electricity use in the area has power peaks in the afternoon and evening with residential customers, but power peaks tend to be in the middle of the day if there are industries in the area. EVC increase the load on the electricity grid, causes voltage drops and a few fuses in the grid to be triggered. Charging with 11 kW between 16:00-19:00 and charging with a power monitor of 13.8 kW create the greatest voltage drops and highest load on the grid. Charging without means of control affects the electricity grid the most but charging with a power monitor also creates problems. Charging with 5.5 kW between 23:00-06:00 as well as when only 50 % of all customers charge with 11 kW between 16:00-19:00 impacts the grid the least. Charging with low power during the night when the base load is at its lowest is the charging technology that is most favorable for the electricity grid. Results also show that the grid can handle a higher load of EVC in the near future if only some of the customers in the network start using electric vehicles.

Modelling and grid integration of a 10 MW wave farm - Study of power quality with varying grid impedance angles and wave front incidence angles

Ullah, Md Imran January 2020 (has links)
Grid connection of wave energy is one of the crucial remaining areas of development towards the commercialization of this renewable energy technology. One of the major challenges with the grid connection of the wave energy technology is power variability. The rapidly changing voltage and power production from very high peaks to lows, increases the complexity for the wave farm developers to reach an agreement with the grid owners to satisfy the grid compliance. Correspondingly, electrical network designs of the offshore wind sector also differ on some key features which includes the power variability, cable lengths, power ratings, connection layouts, sea depths and transmission distances. These differences present new challenges to engineers in adapting technology and knowhow from the wind industry wherever applicable; whereas in parts of the network where power ratings are &lt;2 MW, new designs need to be derived. Hence, power system dynamic modelling of variable emerging wave energy puts a great field of research. CorPower Ocean AB is in the process of developing a 300-kW point absorber type Wave Energy Converter (WEC) that is a commercial fullscale prototype. In this regard, the thesis will discuss the topics of optimization of offshore wave energy electrical networks for farms primarily focused on a 10 MW rating. The modelling for RMS simulation, network efficiency, voltage profile and power quality analysis has been simulated on DIgSILENT PowerFactory. Grid connection compliance for voltage levels, voltage flicker and power factor has been evaluated against local site regulations and parameters for optimal efficiency and better power quality with respect to grid connection is discussed. The impact of grid impedance angle and the wave front incidence angle on the rating of wave farm being connected is also evaluated. The study leads to an optimized electrical layout of a wave farm which can tackle problems such as voltage flicker and varying power. The study also leads to the understanding of better layout for the point absorber with least transmission losses. This study can also be generalized for bigger wave farms in the future which will reduce the complexity and time for wave farms engineers while planning.

Stressed Syllables in Argentine Spanish in Queens, NYC: Lengthening and F0 Early Peak Alignment

Meiling, Giselle Gimenez 01 May 2015 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis investigates the intonation of Argentine Spanish in Queens, NYC, with the goal of verifying if the unique prosody of producing early peak alignments in the F0 of Argentine Spanish, specifically of Porteños (those from Buenos Aires), is maintained among the intense contact influences with other varieties of Spanish in the area. Previous studies have reported this early peak alignment phenomenon in the Spanish spoken in Buenos Aires, and this paper strives to see if this still occurs among Argentine Spanish speakers in New York City. The Buenos Aires speakers were compared with other native Argentine Spanish speakers in New York City who originated from provinces other than Buenos Aires (primarily from Mendoza) to verify if the dialectal varieties of Argentine Spanish had remained the same under the intense language contact situation of living in Queens. The data in the current study are from interviews recorded during the summer of 2014 in the Queens, NYC neighborhood of Elmhurst. Acoustic information obtained includes total syllable duration, F0 measurements, and F0 patterns. Additional linguistic variables included vowel type and vowel syllable position within a word. Extralinguistic variables included speaker sex, age, origin in Argentina, educational level, number of years in NYC, and number of years in Argentina. Results indicate that early peak alignment does indeed occur among Argentine speakers in Queens, NYC; however, it is interesting to note that it not only occurs in the informants from Buenos Aires as predicted, but in the informants from outside Buenos Aires as well. This suggests that the Outside Buenos Aires speakers are undergoing prosodic dialectal leveling with their pitch accent patterns and an increase in stressed syllable duration as occur naturally among the Buenos Aires speakers.
