Key human factors in the E-readiness of academic employees at Higher Education institution

Vermeulen, Luni 06 1900 (has links)
Within the context of technological development, the needs and preferences of the 21st century student (Generation Y), the changing higher education environment, the increasing use of technology in teaching and learning, and the significant role of online learning facilitators in e-learning, the e-readiness of academic employees became imperative. Thus, considering the importance of academic employees' e-readiness, the primary objective of the study aims to determine the role of key human factors in their e-readiness, with specific focus on personal work profile patterns, preferred learning style and pace and style of technology adoption. The research problem therefore is how to determine the role of these key human factors in the e-readiness of academic employees. In this respect the study argues that the e-readiness assessment of academic employees must be included in the human resource performance appraisal process. The purpose of this research is to develop a framework for assessing the ereadiness of academic employees during their performance appraisals, as well as determining and assessing the role of key human factors in their e-readiness in order to draft an e-profile which will provide guidance in terms of structuring unique training and development approaches for each e-profile. Once accademic employees' e-readiness has been assessed during their performance appraisals, they can be plotted on the framework. The outcome of their e-readiness assessments will reveal their e-profiles, which will portray insight into the presence or absence of particular ereadiness indicators, outlined in an e-readiness construct. Subsequently, a personal development plan can be drafted, making provision for uniquely structured training and development interventions, best suited for each accademic employees' e-profile. The most suitable motivating factors for each employee will also be considered during the drafting of the personal development plan. The empirical research by means of a self-administered questionnaire and a focus group discussion revealed two prominent e-profiles indicating various levels of ereadiness, namely an early adopter-pragmatist-compliance e-profile and an early majority-theorist-steadiness e-profile. The findings made it evident that the traits portrayed by a person belonging to a certain technology adoption category show similarities to traits portrayed by particular learning styles and personal work profile patterns. Certain profiles could be identified, based on trends and similarities pertaining to interpersonal traits. The findings further revealed that with an increase in age and teaching experience of respondents (which also imply an increase in age), the willingness to be assessed on e-readiness declined. It was also determined that the human resource performance management policies and practices at the North-West University (NWU) (which is used as case study), do not make provision for the inclusion of e-readiness in performance appraisals of academic employees. Further it became evident that training and development interventions should not only focus on the technical skill of e-learning, but follow a broader teaching and learning approach, also including the philosophy of e-learning and the use and adaptation of teaching and learning strategies to obtain optimal learner learning. The findings of the study thus supported the need for a framework, providing guidance in this regard. Presently, neither the literature of human resource performance appraisal nor the literature of e-readiness or e-learning makes provision for assessing the e-readiness of academic employees. The study thus contributes to the scholarly discourse and knowledge in the field of public human resource management, as sub-field of Public Administration, by developing a theoretical framework (that currently does not exist), consisting of three matrixes for this purpose to determine the role of the key human factors in the e-readiness of academic employees. / Public Administration / D. Protocol design and performance evaluation for wireless ad hoc networks

Tong, Fei 10 November 2016 (has links)
Benefiting from the constant and significant advancement of wireless communication technologies and networking protocols, Wireless Ad hoc NETwork (WANET) has played a more and more important role in modern communication networks without relying much on existing infrastructures. The past decades have seen numerous applications adopting ad hoc networks for service provisioning. For example, Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) can be widely deployed for environment monitoring and object tracking by utilizing low-cost, low-power and multi-function sensor nodes. To realize such applications, the design and evaluation of communication protocols are of significant importance. Meanwhile, the network performance analysis based on mathematical models is also in great need of development and improvement. This dissertation investigates the above topics from three important and fundamental aspects, including data collection protocol design, protocol modeling and analysis, and physical interference modeling and analysis. The contributions of this dissertation are four-fold. First, this dissertation investigates the synchronization issue in the duty-cycled, pipelined-scheduling data collection of a WSN, based on which a pipelined data collection protocol, called PDC, is proposed. PDC takes into account both the pipelined data collection and the underlying schedule synchronization over duty-cycled radios practically and comprehensively. It integrates all its components in a natural and seamless way to simplify the protocol implementation and to achieve a high energy efficiency and low packet delivery latency. Based on PDC, an Adaptive Data Collection (ADC) protocol is further proposed to achieve dynamic duty-cycling and free addressing, which can improve network heterogeneity, load adaptivity, and energy efficiency. Both PDC and ADC have been implemented in a pioneer open-source operating system for the Internet of Things, and evaluated through a testbed built based on two hardware platforms, as well as through emulations. Second, Linear Sensor Network (LSN) has attracted increasing attention due to the vast requirements on the monitoring and surveillance of a structure or area with a linear topology. Being aware that, for LSN, there is few work on the network modeling and analysis based on a duty-cycled MAC protocol, this dissertation proposes a framework for modeling and analyzing a class of duty-cycled, multi-hop data collection protocols for LSNs. With the model, the dissertation thoroughly investigates the PDC performance in an LSN, considering both saturated and unsaturated scenarios, with and without retransmission. Extensive OPNET simulations have been carried out to validate the accuracy of the model. Third, in the design and modeling of PDC above, the transmission and interference ranges are defined for successful communications between a pair of nodes. It does not consider the cumulative interference from the transmitters which are out of the contention range of a receiver. Since most performance metrics in wireless networks, such as outage probability, link capacity, etc., are nonlinear functions of the distances among communicating, relaying, and interfering nodes, a physical interference model based on distance is definitely needed in quantifying these metrics. Such quantifications eventually involve the Nodal Distance Distribution (NDD) intrinsically depending on network coverage and nodal spatial distribution. By extending a tool in integral geometry and using decomposition and recursion, this dissertation proposes a systematic and algorithmic approach to obtaining the NDD between two nodes which are uniformly distributed at random in an arbitrarily-shaped network. Fourth, with the proposed approach to NDDs, the dissertation presents a physical interference model framework to analyze the cumulative interference and link outage probability for an LSN running the PDC protocol. The framework is further applied to analyze 2D networks, i.e., ad hoc Device-to-Device (D2D) communications underlaying cellular networks, where the cumulative interference and link outage probabilities for both cellular and D2D communications are thoroughly investigated. / Graduate / 0984 / 0544 / tong1987fei@163.com

ALGORITHM TO DEVELOP A MODEL PROVIDING SECURITY AND SUSTAINABILITY FOR THE U.S. INFRASTRUCTURE BY PROVIDING INCREMENTAL ELECTRICAL RESTORATION AFTER BLACKOUT

Casey Allen Shull (7039955) 15 August 2019 (has links)
<p>Is North America vulnerable to widespread electrical blackout from natural or man-made disasters? Yes. Are electric utilities and critical infrastructure (CI) operators prepared to maintain CI operations such as, hospitals, sewage lift stations, food, water, police stations etc., after electrical blackout to maintain National security and sustainability? No. Why? Requirements to prioritize electrical restoration to CI do not exist as a requirement or regulation for electrical distribution operators. Thus, the CI operators cannot maintain services to the public without electricity that provides power for the critical services to function. The problem is that electric utilities are not required to develop or deploy a prioritized systematic plan or procedure to decrease the duration of electrical outage, commonly referred to as blackout. The consequence of local blackout to CI can be multi-billion-dollar financial losses and loss of life for a single outage event attributed to the duration of blackout. This study utilized the review of authoritative literature to answer the question: “Can a plan be developed to decrease the duration of electrical outage to critical infrastructure”. The literature revealed that electric utilities are not required to prioritize electrical restoration efforts and do not have plans available to deploy minimizing the duration of blackout to CI. Thus, this study developed a plan and subsequent model using Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) to decrease the duration of blackout by providing incremental electrical service to CI.</p>

No. of bitstreams: 1 Luiz Carlos do Espirito Santo Moco.pdf: 1377970 bytes, checksum: 862a7ffbb10197d54d85df88d0b04aef (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-06-12 / The aim of this work is to propose an evaluation model as a way to support the management of a non profit higher education institution, based on the indicators of performance, by using the BSC Balanced Scorecard, aiming to guarantee that the strategies and the actions which they unfold from are lined up with its mission and vision. This whole work was visualized through a context where big challenges were presented in the last decades for the management of organizations in general. Strong competition, among other factors, has motivated studies and researches about business management models for companies, including the nonprofit ones. The market related to private higher education in Brazil has experienced a strong offer expansion as a result of the perception of business opportunities in this area. Therefore, the management of higher education institutions represents a challenge to their directors, in particular the management of the private and nonprofit ones. The characteristics of such institutions demand the adaptation of the management model to the characteristics of a very competitive and distinct market regulated by the government. The starting point of this work was the review of the bibliography about the performance measurement theme. Through case study, quantitative and qualitative researches, the current management model of the institution was identified. From this point on, it was possible to identify the necessities of the institution and compare them with the performance measurement models studied. At this stage, it was possible to relate theory and practice and identify the methodology of the group on focused and choose the performance measurement model to be proposed as a management support. It was proposed a performance measurement model based on Balanced Scorecard. Five perspectives were created and the strategic objectives and the performance indicators were linked to them. With the proposition of the cause and effect relations between strategic objectives and the Strategic Map of the institution, which allow us to line up the objectives with the definite strategies, we presented the results, which served as a basis for the fulfillment of the objective of this work / Instituição de Ensino Superior sem Fins Lucrativos, baseado em indicadores de desempenho, utilizando o BSC Balanced Scorecard, visando garantir que as estratégias e as ações que delas se desdobrarem estejam alinhadas com a sua missão e visão.

Rabeux, Vincent 06 March 2013 (has links)
This PhD. thesis deals with quality evaluation of digitized document images. In order to measure the quality of a document image, we propose to create new features dedicated to the characterization of most commons degradations. We also propose to use these features to create prediction models able to predict the performances of different types of document analysis algorithms. The features are defined by analyzing the impact of a specific degradation on the results of an algorithm and then used to create statistical regressors. The relevance of the proposed features and predictions models, is analyzed in several experimentations. The first one aims to predict the performance of different binarization methods. The second experiment aims to create an automatic procedure able to select the best binarization method for each image. At last, the third experiment aims to create a prediction model for two commonly used OCRs. This work on performance prediction algorithms is also an opportunity to discuss the scientific problems of creating ground-truth for performance evaluation.

SUSTAINABILITY PERFORMANCE EVALUATION MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS MODEL FOR INDIVIDUAL ORGANIZATIONS AND SUPPLY CHAINS

Coelho, Jose Flavio Guerra Machado, f.coelho@bigpond.com January 2006 (has links)
The title of the research is Sustainability Performance Evaluation Management Systems Model for Individual Organizations and Supply Chains. This research has achieved its aim to develop and demonstrate the practical implementation of a simple and objective sustainability performance evaluation management system model for individual organizations and supply chains. It has resulted in the recognition that a new concept – Network of Interested Partners – underpins the achievement of sustainability. The term acknowledges the interdependence and reflects the essential cooperation that must be achieved between business organisations, their commercially related entities and the local community if progress towards sustainability is to be achieved. It therefore encompasses and extends the concept of a supply chain as currently used. Sustainable Development is defined by the World Commission on Environment and Development as development, which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future societies to meet their own needs. Organizations, as part of human activities, also have to be sustainable. The sustainability of organizations is directly linked to the continual improvement of business performance. Many organizations have found a way to improve performance through the establishment of management systems. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards are recognized worldwide as reliable and efficient tools for the implementation of management systems. However, they do not always result in the desired improvement in outcomes. Therefore, if the required improvement of business performance is to be achieved, improved methodologies for development and implementation of performance evaluation (PE) processes are necessary. These methodologies must take into consideration sustainability principles. They also have to be applicable to individual entities and supply chains, with or without management systems in place. Supply chains are important because it is being increasingly recognized that overall supply chain performance is a means of adding value and competitive advantage to all businesses. In the first part of the research a performance evaluation model or PE (version 1 model) was developed. This was used as criteria to compare and evaluate existing performance evaluation processes and outcomes of individual organisations and their respective supply chain within the Gladstone region, Australia. Questionnaires have also been used to identify and evaluate the needs of the interested parties in relation to the organizations’ and supply chains’ business performance and processes of performance evaluation. All the information provided in the first part of the research was used by the researcher to develop the Sustainability Performance Evaluation Management Systems model or SPEMS (version 2 model). This incorporates the concepts of Network of Interested Parties/Partners. In particular, one of the outcomes is recognition that organizations need to establish partnerships if effective supply chain performance improvement is to be achieved. Therefore the establishment of partnerships has become a key requirement for the implementation of SPEMS. The establishment of partnership among participants of a supply chain of Gladstone and implementation of the eight first steps of the SPEMS (version 2 model) in this supply chain was commenced successfully through workshops. The supply chain was formed by commercial organizations, government entities and interested parties from the community. SPEMS requires that partners all have the same level of ownership and authority in the decisions of the supply chain. Some new terms and their definitions have been created within the research to support the new SPEMS model. They include: Network of Interested Partners, sustainability for organizations, sustainability KPI and sustainability friendly organizations. All of the above are encompassed within the final SPEMS (version 3 model).

從流程觀點進行以RFID為主之U化效益研究─以博物館底片管理為例 / Evaluation of the RFID Information System in Museum Image Archive Management

Tsai, I Ju Unknown Date (has links)
The word "Ubiquitous" originated from Latin, which means god is omnipresent. By using various high-tech products and Internet, the concept of ubiquitous world could be realized. In coordination with U-Taiwan project, our government decided to construct the U-infrastructure using Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) and Radio-frequency identification (RFID). Furthermore, RFID has been widely adopted in many fields, including access control management, product tracking management, health care application, museum information and file management, active/passive gallery tours (e.g., optimum guide route, product information). Most museum image archive management is done by hand, including preservation, inventory, loaning and return etc. In addition to consume extra manpower, it's also error-prone. While stocktaking or searching, it's more accurate and easier to locate certain product using RFID. Moreover, by using RFID it also promote the performance and enhance the accuracy of image access control management, and reduce the possibility of error occurrence. However, introducing new technology could also cause other issues because of the impractical lead-in plan. Therefore, through case studies, we want to evaluate the performance of ubiquitous information application using RFID, and choose a museum cultural relics image archive management as our target. Our study analyzes the original operating process using module standardized tools to evaluate the difference in performance after the implementation of RFID.

Unknown Date (has links)
Competition in the industry is changing from among firms to among supply chains forming by suppliers and buyers. Thus, supply chain management is increasingly recognized as an important source of a firm’s competition advantage. The first step of supply chain management is to select and evaluate suppliers. Since selecting good suppliers is the basis of running supply chain smoothly and creating maximum benefits; therefore, how to select potential suppliers to help achieving the strategy goal has become the most important thing. Besides selecting suppliers carefully, in order to attaining and maintaining various standards set up by firms, they have to put effort to implement supplier development activities to promote the performance and abilities of suppliers. Also, firms must monitor and evaluate supplier performance carefully and regularly to ensure that its current suppliers are meeting the needs and unexpected future needs of the firm. Firms do not have a “one-size-fits-all” strategy for relationship types with suppliers, but manage a portfolio of relationships. Firms should adopt different types of supplier management in accordance with types of relationships to achieve the objective of managing supply chain efficiently and effectively and distribute proper resources to suppliers. This study uses case study research, and is supported by the questionnaire. This study takes certain electronic enterprise as the object company, and tries to discuss that with different relationship types between suppliers and firms, what will be the selection criterion, the development activity, and the performance evaluation system for suppliers; moreover, how are they different. Through collection and analysis, we found the following conclusions: 1.The types of relationship can be divided into three types. 2.Supplier selection criteria adopted by the firm are different from types of relationships. 3.Supplier development activities implemented by the firm are different from types of relationships. 4.Supplier performance evaluation items adopted by the firm are different from types of relationships 5.There are little agreements between the firm and it’s suppliers as for the supplier management system. 6.On the selection criterion and performance evaluation items, the firm pays most attention and requires most on strategic partnership suppliers. Moreover, the development activities are most frequently executed.

In the past few years the continuous data streams applications have become particularly popular. With the continuously increasing rate of entry of new information, it becomes imperative the need for developing appropriate infrastructures that will offer only the information that users are interested for, filtering out large volumes of irrelevant for each user, information. The content-based publish/subscribe model, is capable of handling large volumes of data traffic in a distributed, fully decentralized manner. Our basic contribution in this research area is the coupling of the content-based publish/subscribe model with the structured (DHT-based) peer-to-peer networks, offering high expressiveness to users on stating their interests. The proposed infrastructure operated in a distributed and scalable environment. The proposed solutions in this thesis are related to the development and testing: (a) of a number of algorithms for subscription processing in the network and (b) of a number of algorithms for processing the publication events. The proposed algorithms were developed and thoroughly tested with a detailed simulation-based experimentation. The performance metrics are: the fair distribution of load in the nodes of network from the distribution of messages while processing subscriptions and publication events, the total number of messages that are generated, the total volume of additional information that is required from the algorithms to operate, and the time that is required for matching publication events to subscriptions.
