Differentiation: a journey to a repertoire of selvesNel, An-Mareé 09 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation the author embarks on a journey of storying and re-storying her life. Autoethnographic evocative personal narratives are used as the method of presentation. Congruent with a postmodern stance, the text repositions the reader as a co-participant in dialogue.
In this journey there is a move from a reductionistic understanding of "self" to an understanding of "self" as socially constructed, multiple and changing processes. The author's process of differentiation is embodied and informed by this changing view of "self" as part of, being informed by, shaping and being shaped by the conversations she co-creates in dialogical contexts. This means taking a double-sided, reflexive view of relationships and systems, opens a space for a flexible way of being and imparts sensitivity to the discourses she co-creates. This journey entails taking action that keeps a self-reflexive dialogue going, allowing for different voices to emerge and various encounters to become possible. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

January 2018 (has links)
Aiming to explore how this production of meaning is achieved, we have gathered existing materials, taking as a corpus of study videos selected from the Youtube channels of three hospitals in the state of São Paulo: Albert Einstein Hospital, Cancer Hospital of Barretos and AC Camargo Cancer Hospital Center. The videos consist of testimonials from patients who report their experiences of overcoming, however, although this is not the theme, it becomes intrinsic a discourse of humanization by the health institutions. In order to prove this hypothesis, the analysis of the contents was based on the guidelines of humanized care determined by the U.S.U.S., considering the instances of storytelling and audiovisual as resources to retention attention and approaching the public. By means of the interpretation of the obtained results, elements present in the three narratives that reveal this humanized aspect of the organizations and that can represent a conventional structure for the creation of materials of this nature were found. Storytelling mechanisms such as "confessional tone", "exposure of vulnerability", "first-person speech", among other tricks, as well as audiovisual tools such as the use of close ups and musical components set the stage for the insertion of humanizing guidelines between the lines of the repo... The hallmarks of successful alaryngeal voice rehabilitation following a total laryngectomy using tracheo-esophageal puncture with voice prosthesis : perspectives of key role players.Naidu, Suvaya. 19 November 2013 (has links)
A total laryngectomy (TL) affects the quality of life (QoL) of individuals who have undergone this surgical procedure, as changes are seen in respiration, swallowing and communication. The aim of this study was to gather perspectives of the hallmarks of successful alaryngeal voice rehabilitation by tracheo-esophageal puncture (TEP) with voice prosthesis of laryngectomy patients from key role players based at a public hospital in Gauteng Province, South Africa. A qualitative method of inquiry was used, namely a single-program, collective case study. A focus group, comprising of four individuals who had undergone a total laryngectomy, was held to identify the participants‟ views about successful voice rehabilitation. From this focus group, one successful communicator was identified to be interviewed individually. Five semi-structured, face-to-face individual interviews using open-ended questions were conducted with five key role players in alaryngeal voice rehabilitation. The interviewees comprised of the successfully rehabilitated person with total laryngectomy (PWTL), his caregiver, an ear, nose and throat surgeon, speech-language pathologist and specialist nurse, to gather their perspectives on the factors that contributed to successful alaryngeal voice rehabilitation using TES. The Thematic Framework Approach was used to qualitatively analyze the data. Factors identified as contributing to success included patient selection for tracheo-esophageal puncture, information provision, support in the form of support groups, spiritual as well as family support, stomal care, the skill of the team and key management issues. Issues related to finance adversely affect the provision of voice prostheses and/or the provision of correctly sized prostheses and accessories. Systems have been implemented at the hospital to provide the option of TEP with voice prosthesis without much consideration to the other two alaryngeal options; namely esophageal speech and electrolarynx speech. Implications for clinical practice have been identified especially the need to provide more social support services to persons with TL. / Thesis (M.Sc.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Westville, 2012.

Martha Gellhorn : the war writer in the field and in the textMcLoughlin, Catherine Mary January 2004 (has links)
How war is depicted matters vitally to all of us. In the vast literature on war representation, little attention is paid to the fact that where the war recorder1stands crucially affects the portrayal. Should the writer be present on the battle-field, and, if so, where exactly? Should the recording figure be present in the text, and, if so, in what guise? 'Standing' differs from person to person, conflict to conflict, and between genders. Therefore, this thesis focuses on one particular war recorder in one particular war: the American journalist and fiction-writer, Martha Gellhorn (1908-98), in the European Theatre of Operations during World War Two. The fact that Gellhorn was a woman affected how she could and did place herself in relation to battle - but gender, though important, was not the only factor. Her course in and around war was dazzling: hitching rides, stowing away, travelling on dynamite-laden ships through mined waters, flying in ancient planes and deadly fighter jets, driving from battle-field to battle-field, mucking in, standing out. Her trajectory within her prose is equally versatile: she zooms in and out like a camera lens from impassiveness to intense involvement to withdrawal. The thesis is organised along the same spectrum. The first two chapters plot the co- ordinates forming the zero point on the graph of Gellhorn's Second World War writings (earlier American war correspondence, the 1930s' New Reportage, Gellhorn's upbringing and journalistic apprenticeship). Chapter Three then shows her in the guise of self-effacing, emotionally absent recorder. Moving from absence to presence, Chapter Four considers Martha Gellhorn in the field and Chapter Five 'Martha Gellhorn' in the text. Chapter Six describes the shift from presence to participation, before reaching the end of the parabola in Gellhorn's disillusionment in the power of writing to reform and her concerns about women's presence in the war zone. Given that positioning is the central concern, it is important to note the placement of Martha Gellhorn within the thesis itself. She stands as the central, pivotal example of the war recorder, illuminated by various contexts and comparisons with other writers (notably Ernest Hemingway, to whom she was married from 1940 to 1945). As a result of this approach, there are necessarily stretches of the text from which she is absent, as the survey turns to theoretical and comparative discussion. The hope is that this methodology reveals why Gellhorn, in the field and in the text, went where she did.

In loco research into sexuality is very unusual in anthropology and it is even less common to take into account variables like homosexuality, race and gender in order to understand sexual interaction among men in public areas of big cities. In order to understand such a dynamics, I have undertaken an autoetnography, an investigation of “cruising “ practices in male public conveniences in the Lapa station- the biggest urban bus terminal in Salvador, where there is a transit of subjects who practice occasional and non-commercial sex among men. Studying the negotiations and episodic conjunctions occurring in and in the vicinities of the public convenience, I notice that the terminal is resignified as a space for sexual practices of dissident desires, in accordance with interests as diverse as are the subjects who interact in the scene and who are only united by their common desires of a diversified homosexual nature. / Salvador

Based on fieldwork, I analyze the community's symbolic and ritual dimension from its proposal of rescue of the "true Catholic Church" by ways of personal and immediate experience with God. Following Toca de Assis since 2005, this research indicates a process of tension and changes in its relation with society and the hierarchical institution of Catholic Church. Based on its social relationships and religious habits, I show an ethnography that thinks the christian's myth actualizing machine from the limits of a local community in connection with the roman authority, as well from the limits of the personal experience in connection with the ecclesiastical institution / Mestrado / Antropologia Social / Mestre em Antropologia Social

This research investigated the experiences of bodily practices and uses of the body in narratives constructed by old people. These experiences, narrated by elderly individuals, involved not only those experienced in the current phase of life of old age, but also those experienced in childhood, youth and adulthood. The narratives were collected through interviews with four elderly individuals that participate in a university extension project, called Projeto Educação Física para Terceira Idade [Project Physical Education for Third Age], which is linked to the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais [Federal University of Minas Gerais], at Escola de Educação Física, Fisioterapia e Terapia Ocupacional [School of Physical Education, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy], in its Departamento de Educação Física [Department of Physical Education]. The methodology used in this research was the Oral History, also called as Biographical Method, which guided all stages of the investigative process. Within the methodology of Oral History, was made use of the technique of collecting oral testimonies, since the old individuals were invited to narrate about their history of life related to the topics of interest of this research. Through a script of topics to be addressed in interviews with the elderly individuals, were investigated not only the bodily practices that were experienced by them throughout their lives ¿ eg, games, sports, dances, struggles, capoeira, gymnastics, etc. ¿ but also investigated experiences related to dimensions of the lives of these interviewees, such as work and retirement, formal education, informal education, non-formal education, leisure, cities in which they resided, health and care practices, family descendants and spirituality. It could be perceived that the empirical data obtained in this research were in agreement with the theoretical precepts of authors that investigate the body and bodily practices, understanding them as products of sociocultural construction. Have approached in the interviews with the elderly ones these dimensions mentioned above, in addition to having just asked about bodily practices that were experienced by them throughout their lives until now old, allowed the recognition of the importance of the sociocultural context in the construction process of the body and experiences of bodily practices performed by the individuals / Mestrado / Gerontologia / Mestra em Gerontologia
