Sensation-seeking, locus of control and self-efficacy correlates of adventure-based trainees : a comparative study

Le Roux, Hermias Nel 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: There has been an increase in the popularity of adventure programming over the past few years, with the result that the practice of high-risk recreational activities is growing phenomenally. This study examined how students who are enrolled in a full time adventure education programme involving high-risk recreational activities would differ in terms of sensation-seeking, locus of control and self-efficacy when compared to their non-participative peers. The research group devoted a whole year towards an adventure-based gap year programme that utilises high-risk recreational activities as a core aspect of the programme’s curriculum. It was hypothesised that the research group will measure higher in sensation-seeking, locus of control and self-efficacy when compared to the research equivalent group. For this cross- sectional quantitative study, the research group consisted of 25 students participating in the high-risk iALA recreational adventure programme. The research equivalent group consisted of 34 first year university students. The two sample groups were assessed in terms of their attribute differences on Zuckerman’s Sensation-Seeking Scale, Sherer’s General Self-efficacy Scale, and Rotter’s Internal-External Locus of Control Scale. MANOVA and ANOVA analyses were performed in order to analyse the data. The study indicated that there was a significant difference in sensation-seeking between the two samples. There was, however, no significant difference in levels of locus of control and self-efficacy between the two samples. The study’s significant findings support trends in previous studies concerning greater sensation-seeking among participants of high-risk recreation activities. Important considerations for the results obtained are provided together with implications for further research in this field.

Supervisão de supervisão: grande angular fenomenológica na cartografia de práticas clínicas em contextos institucionais e comunitários / Supervision of supervision: a phenomenological upward look toward the cartography of clinical practices at the institutional and community contexts

Braga, Tatiana Benevides Magalhães 24 September 2010 (has links)
This work intended to investigate Supervision of Supervision as a clinical practice for discussion between clinical supervisors from psychological attention institutions and communities different projects. By using a existential phenomenological approach, the investigation was based upon a clinical cartography that shows the history of its constitution and contexts where it happens: Supervision of Supervisions different scenes concerning to different social scenarios where the psychological practice took place. The supervisors conversation allowed disclosing five theoretical axes for reflexions about the praxis. Such axes were explored by essays that dialogue with the mode by which they were presented at the supervisions. The first axe presents the cartography, relating it to the practice developed and some thoughts by authors reffered by the supervisors to comprehend their action in supervision: a clinical cartography in a existential phenomenological perspective was revealed. The second theme refers to relations between psychology and phenomenology, to demonstrate the property of the phenomenological optics for psychology when the historicity of those practical fields is taken into account. The third axe deals with the psychological practice in institutional and communitarian contexts, approaching to interconnected trends. By one side, it discusses the original interconnection between subject and social context, concerning interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary and their post-war role as in science as at the university. On the other hand, the third essay deals with the clinics insertion in scenarios, others than the traditional private practice, model inspired by the Brazilian political liberal movements for citizens rights specially for Public Health and Mental Health. Yet, the fourth axe explores counseling psychology by the existential phenomenology, in respect to the comprehension of psychological attention as a proper designation for that kind of praxis, encompassing experience as a human mode to dwell in the world. Finally, the fifth theme discusses the relations between clinic and politics in other to designate the clinical context as pre-political. The conclusion points to supervision of supervision as a great angular lens, where five dimensions interrelate themselves: the investigative-cartographic one (comprehension/interpretation of internal and external practice spaces); the practicaltheoretical one (movement for experience comprehension and interpretation by the speech); the clinical one (dialogue that propitiates interrelations between experience and meaning); the pedagogic one (learning by sense attribution while nominating experience, expanding possible meanings to the clinical learning); and the ethical-political dimension (referential construction that provides the comprehension of the world and to act upon it)

Women's experience of their sense of identity at work : a phenomenological study

Sterley, Beverley Anne 02 1900 (has links)
Although women increasingly contribute their labour to an ever-burgeoning workplace, little is understood about their roles and sense of identity at work. Adopting a phenomenological approach to this study will allow the researcher to discover what women’s experience of their sense of identity at work encompasses. Furthermore, a review of the contemporary literature, and a phenomenological approach to the study employing semi-structured interviews and an explication of the protocols using the ‘modified’ Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen method (Creswell, 1998), may be used to explore women’s experience of their sense of identity in the workplace. Recommendations may be made for future research and organisational practice. The main findings indicated, inter alia, that the participants expressed their sense of identity at work from a ‘collective’ or social identity orientation. This finding also supports various feminist researchers’ viewpoints that women may develop a unique sense of identity relative to the environment in which they find themselves (Ely, 1994; Hakim, 1996). Themes that arose from the interviews with the participants included the concerns women express universally to a greater extent, yet included their interests, abilities, traits and material characteristics to a lesser extent (Ashforth & Mael, 1989; Hogg & Turner, 1987). The study findings also questioned psychology-based “person-centred” ideas about women’s relationships with other women at work, and added credence to the supposition that the demographic composition of an organisation may influence an individual’s experiences at work (Ely, 1994, p. 203). Furthermore, as social v identities are more significant in organisations, due to the incidence of social groups (Fisher, 1986; Mortimer & Simmons, 1978; Van Maanen, 1976), it would appear that as fewer women are employed in management and the upper echelons of organisations, they would therefore not benefit from being involved in the social environment of work, and would therefore not be in a position to adopt the identity of their counterparts (Becker & Carper, 1956). The contribution of this research to understanding women’s experience of their sense of identity, and the provision of a basic framework in this regard, may assist female employees, and their employers and managers, in their relationships at work, and in this way improve the employment prospects and retention of women. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M.A. (Industrial and Organisational Psychology)

For this, the present work keeps its attention directed toward the relation between subject and sociocultural context, with the objective of understanding the phenomenon of feeling inadequate and how one configures one s self according to the possible psychological consequences of the situation. The research was qualitative in nature and developed itself based on the phenomenological method style of Merleau-Ponty. The work initiated of theoretical form, through the analysis of popular literature, diagnostic manuals and indexed scientific bibliography. The second stage started from the descriptive-speculative analysis of opened and participative interviews with three adults. Each one described in their own way the presence of the FI in their lives. Notwithstanding the details of the phenomenon, three basic psychological responses have been identified: 1) the Levelling of Subjectivity (LS), characterized by self-questioning, isolation, solitude and, mainly, by the attempt to modify one s self in regards towards the sociocultural context; 2) the Levelling of the Objectivity (LO), in which are identified higher levels of aggressiveness, questioning of the sociocultural context and the possible attempt to modify it, which difficults, on the other hand, contact with subjective aspects; 3) the Sense of Inadequacy (SsI), position in which the subject assimilates the FI of reflexive and creative form, evidencing the importance of the playful character of the existence. The study revealed a possibility of transit between LS and LO, inverting the focus of the leveling, but not necessarily indicating any development of significant insights on the subject s part.

A (re) constitui??o da psicologia fenomenol?gica em Edmund Husserl / The (re) constitution of phenomenological psychology in Edmund Husserl

No. of bitstreams: 1 Tommy Akira.pdf: 1262809 bytes, checksum: e0d6cd9384e939d230308dd228da5829 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-02-06 / The German philosopher Edmund Husserl (1859-1938), founding father of Phenomenology, was one of the most prominent thinkers of the 20th century, who not only influenced the philosophical trends of his time but also the sciences in general. Nevertheless, psychology was the science which strongly had direct influence of phenomenology which, in its turn, provided the possibility of developing a phenomenological psychology. The aim of this thesis is to (re)constitute, from a historical-critical point of view, the conception of phenomenological psychology in Husserl s last work: The Crisis of European Sciences and the Transcendental Phenomenology (Die Krisis der europ?ischen Wissenchaften und die transzendentale Ph?nomenologie. Eine Einleitung in die ph?nomenologische Philosophie). At present, psychologists are developing a large number of versions of phenomenological psychology, particularly in Brazil; however, none of them have rigorously been based on Husserl s concepts. Thus, in order to have an understanding of what constitutes to Husserl a phenomenological psychology, we present, to start with, a brief introduction to the transcendental phenomenology, explaining the variations of the phenomenological method (i. e. phenomenological levels). After that, we point out the most meaningful aspects of Husserl s last piece of writing, concentrating our efforts on the revelation the philosopher makes concerning a crisis of the sciences and of reason, as well as his phenomenological criticism on epistemology of Psychology. At last, following Husserl s analyses of phenomenology and psychology, we conclude that the conception of phenomenological psychology will constitute a universal science of human beings whose object of study is the animistic being. This science will have basic functions such as: a) the rebuilding of the scientific psychology and the explanation of the psychological concepts; b) the constitution of a universal science of the psychic; c) the description of the intentional experiences and d) be a propaedeutic discipline for the transcendental phenomenology. For Husserl, the authentic and genuine conception of the phenomenological psychology is important to the psychologists since that it is through the development of this discipline that they will recover the subjectivity as the original source of human life and its correlation with the world-life. A finalidade dessa tese ?

Considering that the trainning of the therapist goes beyond the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, which also includes several personal processes that contribute to the unique way to become a therapist, I retake in this dissertation to my personal journey as a therapist and practitioner of Vipassana meditation. In a phenomenological perspective I focused on the experiences of meditation in a process of immersion and distance, which allowed me to reflect and express the effects of meditation on my personal way of being a therapist. Based on the description of my experiences in meditation practice as well as on clinical vignettes, I point out how my way of being present with clients was helped by the practice of meditation. This work shows that trainning in psychotherapy is more than the learning of theorical knowledge, for it includes personal processes which contribute to one s becoming a therapist / Esta dissertação visa compreender, em uma perspectiva fenomenológica, a contribuição da prática da meditação vipássana para o desenvolvimento do modo de estar presente do terapeuta.

In the past decade, several studies focused in quantifying, analysing and describing the aspects of live kidney donation. Due to its complexity, it has conflicts in psychic, social, spiritual and existential aspects. The present study aims to describe the fantastic world of donors with the choice of donating a kidney and understand the possible choices of those who have performed the transplant. Meaning to describe the life of each donor, this is a phenomenologic qualitative research with an interview with six kidney donor adults living in São Paulo. The interviews were performed by questions followed by a trigger question considering the participant s answer and following its phenomenologic flow. For data analysis and synthesis, the following steps were put into practice: description, reduction and phenomenon interpretation. The lack of a psychological work on the donors was noticed before, during and after donation. Finally, this essay reveals being a kidney donor has new challenges and confrontations to save the life of a family member, in addition to the subjective aspects in the choices and decisions of being a donor / Com o grande avanço da biotecnologia foi possível observar um crescente número de transplantes renais com doadores vivos no Brasil.

Exploring the Subjective Experiences in Young Schizophrenic Patients and Their Caregivers: From Relational Approach

Lin, Meng Yao Unknown Date (has links)
Purpose: This study is exploring (1) how the young schizophrenic patient perceived who he/she is in “the wilderness”; (2) how their caregivers faced with the schizophrenic experiences and constructed the meaning of caring; and (3) disclosing the patients and their caregiver’s mutual situated experiences by the meta-dyadic structure. Methods: Taking a qualitative approach grounded in phenomenological psychology, this study conducted in-depth interviews by which researchers strived to observe, analyze and understand, from their first-person perspective, how they live under such situation. The participants were recruited through purposive sampling. Three patient-caregiver dyads (three male schizophrenic patients with one male and two female caregivers) were interviewed. The analysis step is adopted by Henri Ellenberger’s existential-phenomenological method (Yaw-Sheng Lin, 2002). Results: Five over-arching themes emerged in the analysis on the transformation of experiences of suffering and caring. (1) Camouflaging the “extra-normal” in daily life. (2) “Extra-normal” is understood through the singularity in the daily life, including the patient and caregiver can “encounter” the unique experience. (3) Ruminative reflection about what happening? (4) Make sense of schizophrenic experiences through blurry the boundary between the normal and abnormal to integrate self into life orientation. (5) Existential experience as becoming process through the state of mind of “hope” and “Angst”. Conclusions: The outcome is implicated in clinical practice: (1) Return to young schizophrenic patients’ lifeworld beyond psychopathology comprehension to articulate the intersubjective understanding relationships. (2) Help caregiver to understand their uncanny situation and cultivate the caring ethics for self and the other. Limitation, future research agenda and suggestion are discussed and proposed.

The meaning of becoming and being a member of a small and structured religious group|

Stones, Christopher R January 1980 (has links)
The concern of this investigation is with the meaning of becoming as well as being a member of one of four specific small and structured religious communities. Three of these religious groups - the Jesus People, the Hare Krishna Devotees and the Maharaj Ji Premies - are considered to be nonconformist in terms of the life-style, value-system and theology each adopts within the mainstream social and theological ethos, while the fourth group - a sample of Catholic Seminarians - like the other groups is a small community with a structured life-style, but its life-style and value-system is not necessarily non-conformist. These groups are all to be found, amongst other places, in Johannesburg, apart from the Catholic Priests, all of whom were living in a seminary in Pretoria. All the members of these religious communities - both men and women - who were interviewed were Caucasian, their educational standard ranged from pre-matric through to university graduate status, and the overall average age of the 9rouP members was 24 years - the youngest subject was aged 17 while the oldest was 31 years of age. Rather than a meas~rement orientated procedure, a phenomenologically inspired methodological procedure was used to explicitate the data. It is argued that a descriptive phenomenological perspective is more appropriate for the elucidation of meaning-structures, especially with reference to the present inquiry, than would be a quantitative, measurement and mathematical treatment of the subject matter with which this thesis is concerned. The results are best summarized by stating that, although the explication revealed that the four groups are distinctly different in certain aspects of the meaning-structures of the individuals' becoming and being members of a group, there are nonetheless marked similarities between the groups in other aspects of the explicitated data.
