Skolvalet: en investering i framtiden? : En narrativ studie om föräldrars resonemang kring grundskolevalet ur ett Bourdieu-inspirerat perspektiv

The thesis aims to increase our understanding about parents reasoning about the elementary school choice by studying which factors parents perceive as important during the decision making process and also by giving meaning to Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of capital through the parents perspective. The empirical material comes from seven BNIM-interviews made with parents, which has been analyzed according to the thematic field analysis. The results show that the parents are not especially concerned about making an active school choice. Stability, closeness, friends, rumors, development and adaptability to the reality are the factors that are perceived as the most important in the decision making process. The school choice has a limited meaning as an investment in social capital, from Bourdieu’s perspective. The cultural capital has a somewhat more prominent meaning for the school choice, but the parents’ seems to mainly use the school choice as a reproduction strategy.

Ungdomars liv präglas idag allt mer av datorer där datorn används flitigt både hemma och i skolan. Vår studie belyser gymnasieungdomars vanor kring datoranvändning och hur vanorna skiljer sig åt mellan elevers olika uppsättningar av habitus.     Vi valde att göra en kvalitativ undersökning med en induktiv-deduktiv metod. Varför vi valde den metoden grundar sig i att det inte sedan tidigare existerar några teorier inom området som uppsatsen kan verifiera eller förkasta samt att studiens resultat tolkades utifrån Bourdieus teorier om habitus och kapital.    Datamaterialet samlades in genom fjorton stycken semi-strukturerade intervjuer vid två olika gymnasieprogram som präglas av olika mängd utbildningskapital. Respondenternas svar bearbetades genom teman som skapades för att finna likheter och skillnader för gymnasieprogrammen samt att hitta kulturella gemensamma särdrag.     Undersökningen ger en varierande bild av de konsekvenser som datoranvändningen kan orsaka.

Denna studie handlar om Gustav III:s dräktreform 1778. Reformen innebar att en enhetlig nationell dräkt infördes för adeln och borgarna. Dessutom infördes en nationell uniform.   Uppsatsen behandlar reformen ur ett symboliskt perspektiv som utgår från Pierre Bourdieus teori om det symboliska kapitalet. Hans teori förklarar adelns och hovets åsikter om reformen. Studien ska också analysera hur uniformen m/1778 var influerad av den nationella dräkten.   Metoden är litteraturstudier och teorin har sammanfattats från flera litterära källor. Syftet är att skapa förståelse för adelns reaktion på dräktreformen. Studien visar att adeln reagerade negativt på att bära en nationell dräkt.   Uppsatsen börjar med en genomgång av svenska uniformer från 1600-talet och fram till den gustavianska eran. Sedan beskrivs Gustav III:s nationella dräkt och vilka reaktioner dräktreformen gav upphov till. Slutligen diskuteras dräktreformen ur det symboliska  perspektivet.

Understanding coach learning in disability sport : a Bourdieusian analysis

The purpose of this research was to answer longstanding calls to explore the learning and development of coaches in disability sport (DePauw, 1986; Reid & Prupas, 1998). We know very little about coaches in disability sport and although there exists a growing body of work that has explored coach learning, there is an absence of in-depth sociological research on disability coaching and coach education. In order to address this gap in the literature, this research sought to examine the nature of coach learning through analyses of coach education and coaching practice. Drawing upon a critical sociological framework, the research was conducted on the premise that understanding social practice can generate critical insights into the nature of coach learning. The research begins to answer some of the criticisms levelled at previous research by operationalising the sociological framework of Pierre Bourdieu in conjunction with disability studies, to analyse data generated through a two-year case study evaluation of an impairment-specific mode of coach education, and ethnographic data generated from eighteen-months of fieldwork in a specific disability coaching context. Altogether, data were collected through in-depth observations, interviews, focus groups and qualitative surveys to generate data that had both breadth, gathering data from large numbers of participants, and depth, by understanding in detail a particular coaching culture (Polkinghorne, 2005). The findings reveal how knowledge about disability was often marginalised in coach education, with engagement in the field functioning as principle source of knowledge about coaching in disability sport. As a result, disability-specific coach education contributed marginally to coach learning and functioned as a platform for the transmission of medical model discourses about disability, in terms of the pedagogy adopted and its effects on coaches knowledge. In the ethnographic study, analyses revealed how disability was assimilated into a high-performance coaching logic that structured coaches learning according to high-performance ideals. The process of learning was revealed to follow the logic of reproduction as alluded to by Bourdieu (1977, 1990a), and reinforced in social practice through the continual (re)adjustment of class habitus to structural conditions. The mechanisms underlying this process revealed learning to have a symbolic nature, mediated by power, resulting in the uncritical reproduction of ideology related to coaching disabled people. Thus, the research extends an understanding of coach learning, taking into consideration social structure and agency, as a basis for further critical inquiry into coaching in disability sport.

À medida que a “importância” não é tomada como uma qualidade intrínseca a obra, mas como o resultado de uma complexa estrutura onde prestigiados juristas, editoras e instituições universitárias contribuem para a retirada da obra e do autor do rol da insignificância, as condições de pesquisa se tornaram férteis para se considerar os efeitos da opinião autorizada no que tange ao trabalho não plenamente consciente de adição de determinada obra no quadro das produções “indispensáveis”. Assim, as noções de “obra importante” e de “jurista de renome” correspondem a noções que estão sempre postas em jogo. Ou seja, a presente dissertação leva em conta o sutil e complexo trabalho simbólico a partir do qual um simples agente do mundo é transformado em um “grande jurista” e sua obra em uma “obra importante” para a formação jurídica. É contra a tomada do objeto como algo evidente (o que equivaleria a tomar de imediato a obra de Müller como um produto “indispensável”) que a presente pesquisa foi realizada. O objeto corresponde bem mais ao resultado de uma construção metódica do que a uma apreensão imediata do visível amplamente influenciada pela ilusória tomada da pesquisa como um pleonasmo do real.

Observou-se, ainda, uma tendência para a valorização da estética concebida fora do Estado e do pais - onde se localiza o monopólio da imposição do gosto - o que abre espaço para o aprofundamento da dominação cultural. / The thesis work on fashion» in Pernambuco state, with theoretical support on Pierré Bourdieu's thought, had the major aim of studying the strategies for the formulation of the taste, as they are used by the agents of fashion, in the context of such a state. The basic data utilized for the study were collected, during open interviews, the main lines of which, however, have been, in part, previously determined. Acting people involved in the "creation" of "Pernambuco fashion" were interviewed, and a particular attention has been devoted to the process used by every agent of the taste for the formulation of local fashion. From the collected data, it has been observed the subordination of the fashion produced in Pernambuco to the traditional centers, introducers of clothing style, located whether in the Mid-South Region of Brazil, or in the principal points of reference of the European fashion. Thus, it was identified a (re)production, not properly speaking a production of fashion as such. It was also noted a tendency to the valorization of esthetics, as conceived out of Pernambuco and Brazil - where the monopoly of imposition of the taste is located - what opens a space for stressing the cultural domination.

Esta consistiu na pergunta inicial, ponto de partida para a constituição da pesquisa que ora se apresenta. Estudar as condições de produção e legitimação da etnomatemática como área de pesquisa, principal objetivo perseguido, cuja orientação metodológica situou-se no campo da sociologia a partir de uma perspectiva que inaugura modos de olhar para aspectos inerentes à educação matemática que, no caso desta investigação, olhou para a etnomatemática. Um modo de olhar que, nesta investigação, toma como referência a perspectiva sociológica proposta por Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002), sociólogo francês conhecido e reconhecido por sua ousadia nos objetos que escolheu para análise, mas, mais que isso, na forma como os analisou, a partir das relações, jogos de poder, capitais que acumularam e alianças que estabeleceram em um espaço de lutas caracterizado por ele como campo. A partir dessa perspectiva, passamos a compreender a etnomatemática como uma perspectiva que é constituída por atividades de pesquisa conduzidas por aqueles que se envolvem com a temática e, também, como parte de um processo de constituição que favoreceu a sua produção. Assim, uma parte dos estudos que encaminhamos envolveu uma análise sobre o processo de emergência da etnomatemática como área de pesquisa, a partir de uma perspectiva que focalizou os aspectos históricos que favoreceram a emergência da etnomatemática como uma área de pesquisa e sua pertinência em um espaço mais amplo de possibilidades para a pesquisa em educação matemática. Ainda sobre esse processo de emergência, focalizamos a trajetória de um principal agente desse movimento – o pesquisador brasileiro Ubiratan D’Ambrosio –, um agente que, pelas posições que ocupa, associadas aos capitais que acumula em sua trajetória, se destaca como figura importante na instituição da etnomatemática como área de conhecimento, introduzindo o termo “etnomatemática” no cenário acadêmico e formulando os princípios que fundamentam a sua proposição como uma área de conhecimento. Um agente que, ao mobilizar estratégias para promover esse movimento, promove, também, o seu movimento no campo da matemática. Na outra parte dos nossos estudos, as atividades registradas por pesquisadores etnomatemáticos em seus currículos Lattes, são compreendidas como aquelas que legitimam a etnomatemática, considerando a legitimação como um processo que envolve a produção, divulgação, promoção e circulação, que constitui o mercado onde circula o discurso que institui a etnomatemática enquanto prática. Um mercado que se estabelece a partir de relações entre produtores e consumidores. Os processos que envolveram a produção e a legitimação da etnomatemática como uma área de pesquisa foram compreendidos como liderados por agentes e constituídos por suas atividades que, ao serem registradas em seus currículos Lattes, veiculam o que deve, ou não, ser entendido como prática etnomatemática. Tais práticas, consideradas discursivas, são aquelas formuladas pelos agentes produtores, elite intelectual dos sujeitos de pesquisa, que ditam as regras do jogo e instituem o que deve ser considerado ou não etnomatemática. / How to map the research in ethnomathematics in Brazil? This was the initial question and the starting point for the constitution of the present study. To study the conditions of production and legitimization of ethnomathematics as a research area was the main objective pursued. The methodological orientation was situated in the field of sociology from a perspective that inaugurates ways of looking at aspects inherent to mathematical education. In the case of this investigation, we studied ethnomathematics. This is a way of looking, which, in this investigation, takes the sociological perspective proposed by Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002) as a reference. Bourdieu was a French sociologist known and recognized for his boldness in the choice of objects for analysis, but, more than that, in the way he analyzed them, which took into account the relations, power games, accumulated capitals and alliances that were settled in a space of struggle. This space was characterized by him as the field. From this perspective, we come to understand ethnomathematics as a research issue that is constituted by studies and activities conducted by researchers who are involved with the theme and also as part of a process of constitution that favored its production. Thus, a part of the studies that we conducted involved an analysis of the emergence process of ethnomathematics as a research issue, from a perspective that focused on the historical aspects that favored the emergence of ethnomathematics as a research area and its relevance as a broader way to research mathematical education. Still on this emergence process, we focused on the trajectory of a main agent of this movement - the Brazilian researcher Ubiratan D'Ambrosio. He was an agent who, for the positions he occupies – which are associated with the capital he accumulated in his trajectory -, stood out as an important person in the institution of ethnomathematics as a research issue, introduced the term "ethnomathematics" in the academic setting, and formulated the principles that are the foundation of the area of studies. An agent who, in mobilizing strategies to promote this movement, also promoted his own movement in the field of mathematics. In the other part of our studies, the activities registered by ethnomathematical researchers in their Lattes resumes are understood as those that legitimize ethnomathematics. We considered legitimacy as a process involving production, dissemination, promotion, and circulation, and which constitutes the market where the discourse that establishes ethnomathematics as a practice circulates. A market that is established based on relations between producers and consumers. The processes that involved the production and legitimation of ethnomathematics as a research area were understood as led by the agents and constituted by their activities, which, when recorded in their Lattes resumes, convey what should or should not be understood as ethnomathematical practice. Such practices, considered to be discursive, are those formulated by the producing agents, the intellectual elite of research subjects, the ones who dictate the rules of the game and establish what should or should not be considered ethnomathematics. / O autor só apresentou título em português.

Film as a reality creating force: And Then We Danced (2019) dir. Levan Akin

In this thesis, I have analyzed and problematized the discourse surrounding And Then We Danced (2019) dir. Levan Akin, by analyzing the film itself by using concepts from Pierre Bourdieu, and investigating what role the film has played in the call for action regarding LGBTQ+ rights in Georgia. I sought out to answer the research questions of how the film And Then We Danced (2019) portrays how one can adapt ones habitus and social field, how the film provoked the political discussion about LGBTQ+ rights in Georgia, and how the reception the film received reflected where Georgia, Sweden and the EU stands regarding the road to LGBTQ+ rights in Georgia. Using Bourdieu, I came to the conclusion that the film portrays how one can adapt ones habitus and social field through Merab’s character arc in the film, and the director used his cultural capital (embodied, institutionalized, and objectified) to not only produce the film itself, but giving a social subfield (Georgia’s LGBTQ+ community) acknowledgment and recognition by involving them in his film. Because of the reaction the film received, it amplified the need for social change in Georgia, reaching news across the globe, putting the rights of LGBTQ+ people in Georgia on the global political agenda. The way the reception the film received reflected where Georgia, Sweden and the EU stands regarding the road to LGBTQ+ rights in Georgia is quite accurate to where they stand politically regarding the issue. Georgia is divided on the issue as they both protested against the film while simultaneously selling out out all of their tickets to see the film, Sweden remained supportive and proud of the film throughout the entire process, and the EU much like Georgia is quite divided as they both funded the film, but does not have a united front on where they stand regarding the issue.

Policy och predikament : En kvalitativ studie av kemisternas erfarenhet av Chalmers implementering av OA-policy

The starting point of this study is a letter to the Swedish Research Council which maintained the difficulty to reconcile chemistry with open access. Previous studies show that when other sciences is increasing in both the deposition rate and selection of OA journals, there is a lull in chemistry. The purpose of the master thesis is to gain an understanding of chemists reluctance to open access in the light of the implementation of Chalmers' mandating open access policy and through field theoretical perspectives understand why. The survey is conducted with a qualitative approach and the empirical data consist of interview material from nine interviews that took place at Chalmers Department of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The interviews show that chemists believe that the idea of open access is certainly sympathetic but incompatible with the chemical sciences. It is believed that the discipline´s traditions, practice and publishing culture as well as opportunities for career differs from other sciences, including what open access is concerned. This uniqueness has not been taken into account in the implementation of OA policies of funding agencies and universities, according to the informants. Evaluations of other universities implementations of open acces policies have identified success factors like support, legal advice and hands-on help in self-archiving. According to the results of this thesis, functionality and infrastructure appears to be less significant if university management and funders does not establish an atmosphere of alliance and thus undermines confidence in the policy and its proponents. The study confirms the importance of the researchers feel invited and involved in the process of change.
