Systems theory training as a context for healing : an autoethnography

The mini-dissertation explains how systems theory provided a healing context for me in my training as a clinical psychologist over two years. The emergence of my authentic voice is narrated in an autoethnography (five act drama) about what happened. The main theoretical bases for the dissertation are – constructivism to understand the learning and teaching I experienced; learning as a collaborative endeavour and the emergence of my authentic voice with help from more skilled others. Systems theory informs the entire study at every theoretical level. Bowen’s family therapy theory is significant for the differentiation of the self and his I-position is equated with the emergence of an authentic voice. Myth, epic narratives, the hero’s journey amplify my interpretation of the differentiation of self. The raw data for the qualitative research were observations, interviews, creative writing, photocollage, a collection of readings, songs and dialogues. The themes emerging from the autoethnography were about obstructions because of the authoritarian nature of my upbringing, life and work. These themes lessened in force in clinical training until my authentic voice emerged in relation to self and as a clinical psychologist. A recommendation from the dissertation is that autoethnography provides a good vehicle for reflection and intense interior scrutiny needed to become a practising clinical psychologist; the autoethnographical exercise could be used by training clinical psychologists more extensively on their journey to maturity. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

The learning and teaching of systemic therapy : an action research approach

Text in English / The training of psychotherapists not only determines what new therapists learn about the practice of therapy, but influences significantly their identity and the development of a professional self. This dissertation explores the professional development of a trainee therapist, taking into consideration the training context and training approach, the trainee's unique training needs and the influence of own interactional style. The study was undertaken from an action research perspective, therefore emphasising solving a problem in the field and feeding this information back into the system during the course of the research project. The researcher describes how the training context (in this case, the Agape Healing Community in Mamelodi, South Africa), the training approach (systemic family therapy), and his personal style shaped his professional sense of self. He found however, that it was the process of action research which encouraged movement from feelings of inadequacy to competence in his professional development. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Being constantly self-reflective, the author takes the reader through his personal journey to be a therapist, and the ethical dimensions encountered in the process, to indicate that one cannot do therapy \\'ithout considering ethics in the fusion of the professional and personal selves of the therapist.- What is lost in the delineated field of observation is hoped to be gained, in the richness of its personal material. Behind training : differentiation of self of a psychotherapy trainee

Psychotherapy is an interpersonal encounter where a therapist collaborates with clients to facilitate a healing process. Due to the personal nature of the therapeutic encounter, the therapist requires the necessary skills and knowledge, as well as a differentiated sense of self. The importance of supporting the psychotherapy trainee’s own differentiation process seemed to have been neglected in research in recent years. In South Africa there has recently been increasing pressure to select larger groups of trainees which has the risk that the tending to differentiation would further be neglected. The purpose of this research study is to reemphasise the importance of differentiation of self of the psychotherapy trainee by examining my own process of differentiation during my psychotherapy training. This study introduces the reader to these concepts and explores psychotherapy training in general and the Unisa training method specifically. The research design of this study is autoethnography which falls in the realm of social constructionism and the coding method is Thematic Data Analysis. The research findings as reflected in the two global themes namely individuation; and gaining and strengthening authentic relationships, seem to accurately reflect the process of differentiation. My journey towards becoming a psychotherapist: an autoethnographic study

This autoethnographic study qualitatively explores a trainee's journey towards becoming a clinical psychologist in South Africa. Both the formal and informal processes for becoming a psychotherapist are explored. The formal processes governing the training and registration of a clinical psychologist in South Africa are outlined. A critical appraisal of the training program is covered. The informal processes of the journey of this trainee psychologist is contextualised within the life story of that same person. In so doing a seventeen-year long struggle and academic relationship with UNISA is highlighted, including the insatiable desire and life long dream of the writer in wanting to become a psychologist. An autoethnographic study was done by using the researcher as the only research subject. The personal writings of the researcher and her family serve as the primary data for the study. An autoethnographic approach was employed in creating and collecting the data. The stories are presented in narrative form, and the data are analysed by employing narrative analysis for extracting and highlighting initial and inferred themes. / Psychology / M. A. Sendo assim, este trabalho teve como objetivo compreender a atuação da (o) psicóloga (o) que acompanha adolescentes e jovens em cumprimento de medidas socioeducativas em uma instituição de internação no Estado da Bahia. Para tal, foi realizada uma pesquisa qualitativa, utilizando-se como recursos metodológicos a análise documental e entrevistas semidirigidas com profissionais de psicologia. O referencial teórico adotado foi a Psicologia Escolar e Educacional em uma perspectiva crítica, que compreende o contexto institucional como uma síntese de múltiplas determinações. Foram levantados 94 relatórios de 24 adolescentes em cumprimento de medida socioeducativa de internação. Foram encontradas, a partir da análise dos relatórios, informações familiares, educacionais, profissionais, sobre o uso de drogas lícitas e ilícitas e sobre o parecer técnico indicado pela equipe que acompanha os adolescentes. Análise das entrevistas destaca as dificuldades vivenciadas pelas profissionais de Psicologia, relacionadas ao fato de a instituição não ter fornecido formação para o trabalho; a formação acadêmica pouco contribuiu para o trabalho na instituição; dificuldades de implementação do ECA e do SINASE e a ausência de um trabalho voltado para o acompanhamento familiar. Por fim, este trabalho indica a necessidade de incluir, tanto na formação básica dos cursos de Psicologia quanto na formação dos técnicos da instituição a temática da atenção ao adolescente e o jovem em conflito com a lei. / ABSTRACT This research is situated in the field of psychological practices required by the Federal Justice and it is applied in adolescents and young people in conflict with the law. We started the research with the policies of deprivation of liberty of children and adolescents in Brazil, which had its historical milestone with the promulgation of the Juvenile Code of 1927, and then its reformulation in 1979, to the citizen, having its origin in the promulgation of the Child and Youth Statute (ECA). Therefore, this study aimed to understand the performance of the psychologist who attends adolescents and young people in compliance with socio-educational measures in a care institution in the State of Bahia. For that purpose, a qualitative research was carried out, using documental analysis and semi-structured interviews with psychologists. The theoretical framework applied was School and Educational Psychology, which understands the institutional context as a fusion of multiple interactions. A total of 94 reports were collected from 24 adolescents in compliance with socio-educational measures in a care institution. Reports analysis revealed family, educational and professional data, the reports also revealed information about the use of legal and illegal drugs and the technical report prepared by the team that attended the adolescents. Interviews analysis highlights the struggles experienced by psychologists, which is related to the fact that the institution did not provide training for work; the academic formation did not contribute much to the work in the institution; difficulties in the implementation of ECA and SINASE and the lack of work aimed at family follow-up. Finally, this work indicates the need to include; the theme of attention to adolescents and young people in conflict with the law; both the basic training of psychologists and the training of technicians that work in care institutions for young people in conflict with the law.

This study is qualitative in nature. It reflects on the rich and varied experiences I encountered during training to be a psychotherapist. The content and process information around training is explored. My personal biases and prejudices towards training are made explicit. The experiences reflected upon are contextualized within the Unisa academic and the hospital clinical internship training contexts. The two contexts of training are contrasted accordingly showing their epistemological stance in their contribution to training of trainee therapists. The primary data in this research is the trainee researcher who is also the only participant subject in the study. The rest of the data is drawn from the experiences of the subject in interaction with others in different systems and subsystems. Through the creative synthesis step in the heuristic research approach the inferred theme is integrated in the analysis. Text in Afrikaans / It is alarming that psychologists are in many cases insufficiently trained with regard to homosexuality. Against this background and on the basis of a literature study and empirical research, this study aims to provide guidelines to educational psychologists on working with homosexual clients. Within the Educational Psychology, a person's self actualisation rests on three pilars, namely experience, meaning assignation and involvement. The premise of the qualitative research (focus group interviews) used in this study is homosexual persons' experience of psychologists - the investigation was therefore approached from an Educational Psychology viewpoint. Altogether 75% of the focus group respondents' experience of psychologists was negative. The possibility exists that insufficient training may cause insufficient knowledge and insight, which in turn may lead to homosexual persons' negative experiences of psychologists. It is therefore imperative that the aspect of training of psychologists with regard to homosexuality will receive attention. / Educational Studies / M.Ed.
