A Concept of inter-AS Priority Signaling using BGP Attributes

The increasing number of delay and loss critical services in packet networks require differentiated packet handling in the forwarding plane. Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees can be given for networks using resource reservation and admission control. However, such strategies require complex control plane extensions and might lead to higher operation expenditures. Network operators therefore often use over-provisioning and traffic differentiation to offer cheaper class of service quality in their internet protocol (IP) packet networks. Priority marking and forwarding of packetized data traffic can be realized mainly using different layer two and three mechanisms. The number of differentiated classes and their autonomous system (AS) internal implementation is at the operator’s choice. This paper proposes a concept of cross-domain and cross-layer priority signaling between packet switched networks to be used at the inter-AS peering points. It makes use of the Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) as the predominantly used routing protocol for AS peering communication. A new BGP-4 path attribute is used to convey the structured priority information. The new concept ensures that all receiving AS peers are consistently and comprehensively informed about the QoS handling within the IP prefix originating AS. Based on this information, all ASes can perform close QoS treatment approximation in a cross-domain and cross-layer manner. The approach is now work in progress at the IETF.

Architectural Evolution of Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) using Cloud Computing

With the advent of Smart Cities, Intelligent Transport System (ITS) has become an efficient way of offering an accessible, safe, and sustainable transportation system. Utilizing advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), ITS can maximize the capacity of existing transportation system without building new infrastructure. However, in spite of these technical feasibilities and significant performance-cost ratios, the deployment of ITS is limited in the real world because of several challenges associated with its architectural design. This thesis studies how to design a highly flexible and deployable architecture for ITS, which can utilize the recent technologies such as - cloud computing and the publish/subscribe communication model. In particular, our aim is to offer an ITS infrastructure which provides the opportunity for transport authorities to allocate on-demand computing resources through virtualization technology, and supports a wide range of ITS applications. We propose to use an Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model to host large-scale ITS applications for transport authorities in the cloud, which reduces infrastructure cost, improves management flexibility and also ensures better resource utilization. Moreover, we use a publish/subscribe system as a building block for developing a low latency ITS application, which is a promising technology for designing scalable and distributed applications within the ITS domain. Although cloud-based architectures provide the flexibility of adding, removing or moving ITS services within the underlying physical infrastructure, it may be difficult to provide the required quality of service (QoS) which decrease application productivity and customer satisfaction, leading to revenue losses. Therefore, we investigate the impact of service mobility on related QoS in the cloud-based infrastructure. We investigate different strategies to improve performance of a low latency ITS application during service mobility such as utilizing multiple paths to spread network traffic, or deploying recent queue management schemes. Evaluation results from a private cloud testbed using OpenStack show that our proposed architecture is suitable for hosting ITS applications which have stringent performance requirements in terms of scalability, QoS and latency. / Baksidestext: Intelligent Transport System (ITS) can utilize advances in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and maximize the capacity of existing transportation systems without building new infrastructure. Reactive Networking using Dynamic Link Exchange Protocol

This master thesis studies the possibilities of using a radio-router protocol in order to increase the quality of service in dynamic tactical network environments. We cover three radio-router protocols with emphasis on Dynamic Link Exchange Protocol (DLEP). Many applications, such as voice and video communication, have bandwidth and latency requirements which need to be fulfilled in order to provide a sufficient level of quality. This poses a problem in tactical network environments where links are typically dynamic and both bandwidth andlatency can vary. A radio-router protocol can alleviate this problem and also improve the routing in a network by allowing routers to take part of link-layer information. By using a radio link emulator (RLE) developed by Saab we are able to simulate dynamic network environments. We have performed two experiments by combining the RLE and an implementation of a subset ofthe DLEP specification draft. Both experiments simulate typical military network scenarios and allow us to analyse the effects of utilizing link-layerfeedback.Our results show that by using DLEP it is possible to provide better quality of service in highly dynamic conditions. We also show that DLEP can influence Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR) by making OLSR aware of changes in the network topology. This leads to a reduced network convergence time with only a small increase in OLSR overhead.

IEEE 802.11b MAC layer's influence on VoIP quality parameters : Measurements and Analysis

Real-time voice measurements were performed to assess whether there are significant problems with 802.11b wireless networks regarding real-time voice communication. We present an analysis of how the 802.11b MAC protocol and diverse environmental conditions affect the quality of real-time voice in terms of loss, delay, and jitter. We also reveal practical issues of wireless monitoring with passive sniffers for this type of analysis. The results obtained in our measurements show that in the majority of the experiments the quality was good, but under some circumstances the requirements for an acceptable voice communication were not met. / Realtidsröstmätningar gjordes för att testa om det finns problem med 802.11b trådlösa nätverk beträffande realtidsröstkommunikation. En analys presenteras av hur 802.11b MACs protokoll och olika tillstånd i omgivningen påverkar kvaliteten på realtidsrösten i form av förluster, fördröjningar och jitter. Även praktiska angelägenheter om trådlös övervakning med passiva sniffers visas. De erhållna resultaten visar att i en majoritet av fallen var kvaliteten acceptabel, men under vissa förhållanden blev inte kraven för röstkommunikation uppfyllda.

Adaptive Middleware for Self-Configurable Embedded Real-Time Systems : Experiences from the DySCAS Project and Remaining Challenges

Development of software for embedded real-time systems poses severalchallenges. Hard and soft constraints on timing, and usually considerableresource limitations, put important constraints on the development. Thetraditional way of coping with these issues is to produce a fully static design,i.e. one that is fully fixed already during design time.Current trends in the area of embedded systems, including the emergingopenness in these types of systems, are providing new challenges for theirdesigners – e.g. integration of new software during runtime, software upgradeor run-time adaptation of application behavior to facilitate better performancecombined with more ecient resource usage. One way to reach these goals is tobuild self-configurable systems, i.e. systems that can resolve such issues withouthuman intervention. Such mechanisms may be used to promote increasedsystem openness.This thesis covers some of the challenges involved in that development.An overview of the current situation is given, with a extensive review ofdi erent concepts that are applicable to the problem, including adaptivitymechanisms (incluing QoS and load balancing), middleware and relevantdesign approaches (component-based, model-based and architectural design).A middleware is a software layer that can be used in distributed systems,with the purpose of abstracting away distribution, and possibly other aspects,for the application developers. The DySCAS project had as a major goaldevelopment of middleware for self-configurable systems in the automotivesector. Such development is complicated by the special requirements thatapply to these platforms.Work on the implementation of an adaptive middleware, DyLite, providingself-configurability to small-scale microcontrollers, is described andcovered in detail. DyLite is a partial implementation of the concepts developedin DySCAS.Another area given significant focus is formal modeling of QoS andresource management. Currently, applications in these types of systems arenot given a fully formal definition, at least not one also covering real-timeaspects. Using formal modeling would extend the possibilities for verificationof not only system functionality, but also of resource usage, timing and otherextra-functional requirements. This thesis includes a proposal of a formalismto be used for these purposes.Several challenges in providing methodology and tools that are usablein a production development still remain. Det traditionellasättet att hantera dessa utmaningar är att skapa en helt statisk design, d.v.s.en som är helt fix efter utvecklingsskedet.Dagens trender i området inbyggda system, inräknat trenden mot systemöppenhet,skapar nya utmaningar för systemens konstruktörer – exempelvisintegration av ny mjukvara under körskedet, uppgradering av mjukvaraeller anpassning av applikationsbeteende under körskedet för att nå bättreprestanda kombinerat med e ektivare resursutnyttjande. Design and optimization of next-generation carrier-grade wi-fi networks / Conception et optimisation des réseaux wi-fi opérateur de nouvelle génération

Comme le Wi-Fi est devenu de plus en plus important dans les réseaux actuels, ainsi que dans les réseaux du futur, de nouvelles exigences " opérateur " se sont apparues afin de supporter les attentes des utilisateurs et de fournir des réseaux Wi-Fi de haute performance. Dans ce contexte, nous étudions plusieurs problèmes liés à la conception et l'optimisation des réseaux Wi-Fi opérateur de nouvelle génération. Dans la première étape, notre objectif est d'améliorer l'expérience utilisateur Wi-Fi et de lui offrir un accès personnalisé et transparent aux réseaux et services Wi-Fi. Pour cela, nous proposons une extension des trames de gestion IEEE 802.11 pour activer la découverte des services locaux avant l'association Wi-Fi, tout en évitant la surcharge du canal. Nous définissons également un ensemble d'étiquettes de service pour identifier d'une manière standardisée les services les plus connus. Dans la deuxième étape, nous adressons les problèmes liés à l'architecture et la gestion du réseau dans un environnement Wi-Fi opérateur de nouvelle génération. Plus précisément, nous proposons, tout d'abord, une nouvelle architecture Wi-Fi qui exploite les concepts de NFV et du Edge Cloud Computing. Nous visons à travers cette architecture à apporter plus d'agilité et d'adaptabilité et d'améliorer la QoS perçue par l'utilisateur en plaçant des fonctions réseau et certains services à proximité de lui. Pour faire face à certains problèmes de gestion dans cette architecture, nous proposons ensuite des stratégies de placement et de provisionnement des fonctions de réseau virtuelles en s'appuyant sur des exigences de QoS. / As Wi-Fi is gaining a lot of momentum in today’s networks as well as in future networks, new carrier-grade requirements are emerging to support future user expectations and provide high-performance Wi-Fi networks. In this context, we investigate several problems surrounding the design and optimization of carrier-grade next-generation Wi-Fi networks. In the first stage, our objective is to improve the Wi-Fi user experience and offer to him a personalized and seamless access to Wi-Fi networks and services. For this, we propose an extension to the IEEE 802.11 management frames to enable venue service discovery prior to Wi-Fi association while avoiding channel overhead. We define also a set of extensible service labels to uniquely and globally identify the most known venue-based services. In the second stage, we deal with network architecture and management issues in next-generation carrier Wi-Fi environment. More specifically, we first propose a novel carrier-managed Wi-Fi architecture that leverages NFV and Edge Cloud Computing concepts. We aim through this architecture to bring more agility and adaptability and improve user perceived QoS by placing network functions and certain services close to end-users. To address some major management issues in this proposed architecture, we then propose placement and provisioning strategies of Virtual Network Functions based on QoS requirements. These strategies can also be applied to any edge-central wireless carrier architecture, since they do not make any assumption about the underlying wireless technology.

Optimisation dynamique de réseaux IP/MPLS / Dynamic optimization of IP/MPLS networks

La forte variabilité des trafics est devenue l'un des problèmes majeurs auxquels doivent faire face les gestionnaires d'infrastructures réseau. Dans ces conditions, l'optimisation du routage des flux en se basant uniquement sur une matrice de trafic moyenne estimée en heure de pointe n'est plus pertinente. Les travaux conduits dans cette thèse visent la conception de méthodes d'optimisation dynamiques du routage, adaptant en temps réel les routes utilisées par les flux aux conditions de trafic dans le réseau.Nous étudions tout d'abord le problème d'optimisation des poids OSPF pour le routage intra-domaine dans les réseaux IP, où le trafic est routé le long de plus courts chemins, en fonction des poids des liens. Nous proposons une approche en ligne permettant de reconfigurer dynamiquement les poids OSPF, et donc les routes utilisées, pour répondre aux variations observées du trafic et réduire ainsi le taux de congestion du réseau. L'approche proposée repose sur l'estimation robuste des demandes en trafic des flux à partir de mesures SNMP sur la charge des liens. Les résultats expérimentaux, aussi bien sur des trafics simulés que réels, montrent que le taux de congestion du réseau peut être significativement réduit par rapport à une configuration statique.Dans la même optique, nous nous intéressons également à l'optimisation des réseaux MPLS, qui permettent de gérer l'utilisation des ressources disponibles en affectant un chemin spécifique à chaque LSP. Nous proposons un algorithme inspiré de la théorie des jeux pour déterminer le placement des LSP optimisant un critère de performance non linéaire. Nous établissons la convergence de cet algorithme et obtenons des bornes sur son facteur d'approximation pour plusieurs fonctions de coût. L'intérêt principal de cette technique étant d'offrir des solutions de bonne qualité en des temps de calcul extrêmement réduits, nous étudions son utilisation pour la reconfiguration dynamique du placement des LSP.La dernière partie de cette thèse est consacrée à la conception et au développement d'une solution logicielle permettant le déploiement d'un réseau overlay auto-guérissant et auto-optimisant entre différentes plateformes de cloud computing. La solution est conçue pour ne nécessiter aucun changement des applications. En mesurant régulièrement la qualité des liens Internet entre les centres de données, elle permet de détecter rapidement la panne d'une route IP et de basculer le trafic sur un chemin de secours. Elle permet également de découvrir dynamiquement les chemins dans le réseau overlay qui optimisent une métrique de routage spécifique à l'application. Nous décrivons l'architecture et l'implémentation du système, ainsi que les expériences réalisées à la fois en émulation et sur une plateforme réelle composée de plusieurs centres de données situés dans différents pays. / The high variability of traffic has become one of the major problems faced by network infrastructure managers . Under these conditions, flow route optimization based solely on an average busy hour traffic matrix is no longer relevant. The work done in this thesis aims to design dynamic routing optimization methods, adapting in real time the routes used by the flows to the actual network traffic conditions.We first study the problem of OSPF weight optimization for intra-domain routing in IP networks, where the traffic is routed along shortest paths, according to links weights. We propose an online scheme to dynamically reconfigure the OSPF weights and therefore the routes used, to respond to observed traffic variations and reduce the network congestion rate. The proposed approach is based on robust estimation of flow traffic demands from SNMP measurements on links loads. Experimental results, both on simulated and real traffic data show that the network congestion rate can be significantly reduced in comparison to a static weight configuration.On the same idea, we are also interested in optimizing MPLS networks that manage the available resource utilization by assigning a specific path for each LSP. We propose an algorithm inspired by game theory to determine the LSP placement optimizing a nonlinear performance criterion. We establish the convergence of the algorithm and obtain bounds on its approximation factor for several cost functions. As the main advantage of this technique is to offer good quality solutions in extremely reduced computation times, we are studying its use for dynamic reconfiguration of the LSP placement.The last part of this thesis is devoted to the design and development of a software solution for the deployment of a self-healing and self-optimizing network overlay between different cloud platforms. The solution is designed such that no change is required for client applications. By regularly measuring the quality of Internet links between data centers, it can quickly detect an IP route failure and switch the traffic to a backup path. It also allows to dynamically discover the paths in the overlay network that optimize a routing metric specific to the application. We describe the system architecture and implementation, as well as the experiments in both emulation and real platform composed of several data centers located in different countries

Dans le contexte actuel de l’Internet, un enjeu de recherche majeur est de permettre aux applications et à leurs utilisateurs de disposer de systèmes de communication offrant une qualité de service (QdS) optimale. Ceci en fonction des ressources machine et réseau disponibles, dont les capacités et les performances, hétérogènes et variables, ne sont pas connues à l’avance. Le provisionnement optimal de la QdS dans ces futurs systèmes de communication autonomes nécessite d’une part la caractérisation des services et des ressources de communication disponibles, et d’autre part la prise en compte des expressions des besoins et des préférences des différents acteurs du système (utilisateurs, fournisseurs des services, etc.). Le sujet de la thèse porte sur la définition d’un cadre sémantique de QdS basé sur les ontologies pour la caractérisation des ressources et des services de communication dans le but de fournir la meilleure QdS au regard des besoins et des préférences des utilisateurs. Ce cadre sera utilisé dans la définition des objectifs et des contraintes de QdS et dans l’élaboration de modèles de décision. L'ensemble sera utilisé pour la mise en œuvre de QdS dans les systèmes de communication autonomes situés dans un contexte de réseaux domestiques / In the current context of the Internet, a major research challenge is to enable applications and users to have their communications systems with an optimal quality of service (QoS). Indeed, QoS provisioning should take into account the available machine and network resources, which capacities and performances are heterogeneous, variable, and not known in advance. The optimal QoS provisioning for the future autonomous communication systems requires the characterization of available services and communication resources and also taking into account the expressions of needs and preferences of different actors in the system (users, service providers, etc.). The subject of this thesis deals with the definition of a QoS ontology-based semantic framework for the characterization of network resources and communication services in order to provide better QoS according to the needs and preferences of users. Gestion autonomique de la QoS au niveau middleware dans l'IoT / Automatic QoS management at the middleware level in IoT

L'Internet connaît à nouveau une expansion drastique. En plus des terminaux classiques, il permet aujourd'hui d'interconnecter toute sorte d'objets connectés permettant la capture d'événements depuis l'environnement considéré, mais également le contrôle à distance de cet environnement. Plusieurs milliards de ces objets sont ainsi amenés à l'horizon 2020 à contribuer à l'avènement de l'Internet des Objets (IoT). Ce paradigme, qui étend le concept de Machine-to-Machine (M2M), ouvre la voie à de nouveaux usages tels que la domotique, la télésurveillance, ou encore les usines du futur. Plusieurs architectures ont été proposées pour structurer l'IoT. Leur fondement est basé sur une vision en quatre niveaux : le niveau Équipement, qui comporte les objets connectés, le niveau Réseau contenant les différentes technologies nécessaires aux échanges, le niveau Intergiciel (ou Middleware) qui offre aux applications une couche d'abstraction des niveaux sous-jacents, et enfin le niveau Application qui consiste en l'ensemble des applications concourant, via leurs interactions avec les objets connectés, à la réalisation d'une activité métier. Nos travaux se positionnent au niveau Middleware sur la base de l'architecture définie dans le cadre des standards SmartM2M puis oneM2M. Plusieurs problématiques sont amenées à être (re)-posées dans ce contexte. Nous nous intéressons essentiellement à celle de la qualité de service (QoS - Quality of Service) exprimée par certaines applications métiers. Les solutions proposées en réponse à cette problématique concernent principalement le niveau Réseau. Au niveau Middleware, les standards se focalisent essentiellement sur la proposition d'architectures et de services fonctionnels. Les besoins non fonctionnels, typiquement orientés QoS, ne sont que peu ou pas considérés. Parallèlement, les solutions propriétaires ne considèrent pas l'évolution dynamique du contexte et des besoins. Face à ces limites, nous proposons une approche de gestion dynamique, i.e. durant l'exécution du système, et autonome induisant un minimum d'intervention humaine. La gestion proposée, guidée par des modèles, porte sur des actions de reconfiguration comportementales et structurelles touchant au trafic applicatif et/ou sur les ressources de niveau Middleware / The Internet is experiencing a drastic expansion again. In addition to conventional terminals, it now allows to interconnect all kinds of connected objects allowing the capture of events from the considered environment, but also the remote control of this environment. Billions of these objects are thus led in 2020 to contribute to the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT). This paradigm, which extends the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) concept, paves the way for new uses such as home automation, remote monitoring, or even the factories of the future. Several architectures have been proposed to structure the IoT. Their foundation is based on a vision in four levels: (1) Equipment level, which includes the IoT equipment, (2) Network level containing the various technologies for data exchanges, (3) Middleware level, which offers applications an abstraction layer for underlying levels, and finally, (4) Application level, which consists of the set of applications contributing, via their interactions with the connected objects, to the realization of a business activity. Our work is positioned at Middleware level and is based on the architecture defined in the SmartM2M and then oneM2M standards. Several challenges have to be (re)considered in this context. We are mainly interested in the Quality of Service (QoS) issue expressed by some business applications. Proposals addressing this issue essentially target the Network level. For the Middleware level, standards focus mainly on the proposal of architectures and functional services. The non-functional requirements, typically QoS, are little or not considered. Meanwhile, proprietary solutions do not consider the dynamic evolution of the context and requirements. In response to these limitations, we propose a dynamic management approach, i.e. during the execution of the system, and autonomous, i.e. without human intervention. Analysis and design of efficient techniques for video transmission in IEEE 802.11 wireless ad hoc networks

[EN] Wireless mobile ad ho networks, also known as MANETs, are omposed by independent mobile stations that ommuni ate without requiring any sort of infrastru ture for support. These networks are hara terized by variable bandwidth values and frequent path breaks, whi h are due to hannel noise, interferen e between stations and mobility. Su h fa tors require significant adaptation apabilites at different levels of the proto ol suites employed, enabling stations to qui kly respond to fast- hanging network onditions. Resear h on the most adequate proto- ols for the physi al, MAC and routing layers is still on-going, though some basi onsensus has already been rea hed and several testbeds have been setup around the world. To deploy real-time multimedia servi es, namely voi e and video, on top of su h an unreliable network environment is a very hallenging task. In this thesis we propose to a hieve that goal starting from urrently available Wi-Fi te hnology, and gradually finding the most adequate enhan ements to ea h proto ol layer of interest; we then ombine these enhan ements until we a hieve a omplete QoS framework for ad ho networks. By using urrently available te hnology we assure that the proposal of this thesis has an inherent high-level of appli ability on real life environments. Sin e our working field fo uses on video transmission over wireless ad ho networks, we will show how it is possible to support several QoS- onstrained video streams in MANET environments hara terized by moderate to high mobility levels, and by a significant amount of best efort traffic / [ES] Las redes inalámbricas ad hoc, también conocidas como redes MANET, están compuestas por un conjunto de estaciones móviles independientes capaces de omunicarse entre sí sin necesidad de ningún tipo de infraestructura común de comunicaciones. Estas redes se caracterizan por tener un ancho de banda variable y pérdidas frecuentes de ruta que se pueden atribuir al ruido del anal inalámbrico, a la interferencia entre las estaciones móviles o bien a la movilidad de las estaciones. Dichos factores requieren una gran capacidad de adaptación en las diferentes capas de la arquitectura de protocolos, permitiendo a una estación responder rápidamente a posibles cambios bruscos en las condiciones de la red. A pesar de que aún se están realizando trabajos de investigación en bus a de los protocolos más adecuados para las capas físicas, a eso al medio (MAC) y encaminamiento, ha sido posible llegar a un nivel básico de consenso, lo cual ha permitido el despliegue de plataformas y entornos aplicados que utilizan tecnología de red MANET. Ofrecer servicios multimedia, como voz y vídeo, en redes con tan poca habilidad es un desafío importante. En esta tesis nos proponemos alcanzar este objetivo partiendo de la tecnología Wi-Fi actualmente disponible, encontrando de forma paulatina las mejoras más importantes en las diferentes capas de la arquitectura de red, para llegar, finalmente, a una solución integrada capaz de ofrecer calidad de servicio (QoS) en las redes MANET. Al utilizar la tecnología que disponemos actualmente nos aseguramos que las propuestas de esta tesis tengan un alto grado de aplicabilidad en entornos reales. Ya que la línea de trabajo de la tesis está aplicada a la transmisión de vídeo en redes MANET, demostraremos que es posible ofrecer calidad de servicio a varios flujos de vídeo en una red MANET caracterizada por altos grados de movilidad en sus nodos y un nivel significativo de tráfico o de tipo best effort / Tavares De Araujo Cesariny Calafate, CM.
