Anxiety-based school refusal is a complex, ill-defined phenomenon related to several dimensions social, family, school, psychological…). This anxious absenteeism is a clinical reality with consequences on the adolescent’s family and professional perspectives and on his/her psychological functioning. As the prognosis depends to a large extent on early clinical care, early diagnosis is crucial. While a specific assessment is required, there is still no common tool that school professionals and health care professionals may use.The goal of this research was the creation and the validation of a self-reported screening tool for assessing school refusal.Three studies were carried out successively using an integrative approach and qualitative method (Study 1) or a quantitative method (Studies 2 and 3). The first study, with interviews (N = 42), aimed at a conceptual and operational definition of this construct. The content analysis revealed a descriptive model of school refusal comprising four different themes. The second study (N = 22) concerned the creation of the pilot version of the questionnaire (SChool REfusal EvaluatioN; SCREEN): generation of items, selection of items and creation of the questionnaire. The last study (n = 584) involved the validation of the SCREEN with a community sample of teenagers and a clinical sample. Analyses revealed a 4-factor model structure with 18 items. ROC analyses and standardization revealed a cut-off for screening school refusal. Results suggested that the tool has good psychometric properties (sensitivity .88; specificity .89; Cronbach’s alpha .84).The SCREEN and the descriptive model of school refusal can be helpful both at school and in health care services, for research and clinical practice. The SCREEN is useful for early clinical care, empirical studies, and for developing partnerships between school educators and health care professionals.

Upplevelsen av aktivitetsbalans hos individer med högkänsligt personlighetsdrag / Experiences of occupational balance in individuals with highly sensitive personality traitsHögman, Johanna, Dolk, Annika January 2022 (has links)
I studien deltog 203 högkänsliga individer. Resultat: De högkänsliga individerna skattade i genomsnitt låg aktivitetsbalans. / Aim: Examine and describe occupational balance in individuals with highly sensitive personality traits. Method: A quantitative questionnaire study was conducted. The web survey was designed according to Occupational Balance Questionnaire 11 [OBQ11]. Four background variables were added. In the analysis of data, a quantitative processing was applied. The study involved 203 highly sensitive individuals. Result: The highly sensitive individuals estimated an average low occupational balance. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the estimated occupational balance between the individuals who have children against the individuals without children and between those who live alone or live together. Some parts of OBQ11 excelled more as they showed lower estimated occupational balance than others. No relationship between age and estimated occupational balance could be discerned. Conclusion: The participants in the study have a consistently low occupational balance. More research is needed to investigate the link between occupational therapy and highly sensitive personality traits. On the other hand, occupational therapists' knowledge of how the environment affects an individual could be useful for highly sensitive individuals.

Group cohesion – The road to success? : A quantitative study of the relationship between group cohesion and performance in a military context.Eliasson, Christian, Mossberg, Hans January 2023 (has links)
Previous research has shown associations between cohesion and performance. However, measurement methods and circumstances differ and the need for further research is significant. The aim of this paper was to examine the relationship between cohesion and performance in a military context. To achieve this, a quantitative study is carried out on the relationship between group cohesion and group performance. The sample consists of Swedish marines (n=91) participating in a training exercise called: “Övning amfibie”. Cohesion and performance are measured on all participants and the values are compiled within the respective groups they are divided into. Cohesion is measured by using "The group environment questionnaire" (GEQ) which is a questionnaire that measures cohesion in several dimensions. These dimensions consist of: Individual Attractions to the Group- Social (ATGS), Individual Attractions to the Group-Task (ATGT), Group Integration-Social (GIS) and Group Integration-Task (GIT). The performance is assessed by the officers coordinating the exercise at each stage of the exercise. The result shows that there was an association (r>0,5; p<0,05) between group cohesion and the group performance. Clear differences were found in performance and cohesion between temporarily assembled groups and regular groups. In conclusion this paper has shown association between group cohesion and group performance to a certain extent. Cohesion also contributes to other psychological and psychosocial benefits that promote the working climate and the individual’s wellbeing. Thus, cohesion should continue to be in focus when military and other organizations develop their organizations.

The teaching of second level calculus at South African technikons : a didactical analysis of specific learning problemsSmith, Julien Clifford 11 1900 (has links)
This study was prompted by serious problems regarding specific teaching and learning problems in calculus at the technikon. The general aims were to identify and analyze particular teaching and learning problems relating to 2nd level engineering courses in calculus and to recommend improvements which could increase
student performance in engineering calculus courses. An extensive study revealed world wide concern in calculus reform. The empirical research instruments consisted of structured questionnaires given to staff and students from nine technikons plus interviews. Five serious problem areas were identified: student ability in mathematics, content difficulty, background difficulties, timetable pressures and lecturer's presentation.
The impact of training technology on calculus was investigated. Recommendations were that routine exercises can be done on computer with extra tutorial time for computer laboratory projects. Background recommendations suggested that schools give more time to trigonometry and coordinate geometry and that bridging courses at technikons for weaker students be developed. / Curriculum and Instructional Studies / M. Impact of Gamification on usability and engagement with regards to a financial savings applicationBeseetti, Tej Kiran January 2019 (has links)
The implementation of game elements has quintessentially uplifted the overall experience of applications in various domains and thereby expanding the customer base. This process is called gamification which has now been introduced in many domains. The purpose of the study is to understand gamification and how its impact would be if it is deployed in a financial savings application. The gamified elements are implemented based on a gamification framework called the Octalysis framework1. This Octalysis framework is a human-centric gamification framework which serves as a template to implement the required gamified elements. Based on a pre-study of financial applications and the Octalysis framework, two distinct prototypes (Version A and Version B) of the same mobile app concept were developed where the difference is the presence of gamified elements in one prototype. The evaluation is based on analyzing the impact the gamified elements have caused on the usability and the emotional engagement of the financial savings application. The participants are provided to interact with both prototypes and interviews are conducted to evaluate the emotional engagement and the usability of both the prototypes of the financial savings application. The study shows an increase in emotional engagement corresponding to the gamified elements whereas the usability more or less remained the same, indicating a deeper investigation of the gamified elements with regards to usability is required.

The cross-cultural validity and comparability of the sixteenth personality factor questionnaireTack, H. (Harold) 11 1900 (has links)
The focus of this study is the Sixteen Personality Factor Quenstionnaire, South Africam 1992 version (16 PF, SA92). This personality questionnaire was derived from the 16 PF which was developed in the United States and was adapted for South African conditions in 1992. The aim of this study is to determine whether the scores of the 16 PF, SA92 are cross-culturally valid and comparable in South Africa.
The sample consisted of White and African (male and female) applicants who
applied for positions in a South African state department.
To achieve the aims outlined in the introductory chapter, construct comparability and item comparability research was conducted. Descriptive statistics were also calculated to indicate the performance of the various sub-samples (White, African, male and female).
The results indicated that the population variable as opposed to the gender variable had the greatest influence on the scores obtained. Problems existed with the construct and item comparability of the 16 PF, SA92 when the different population groups were compared. Mean differences were also found on the majority of factors of the 16 PF, SA92 when the scores of the different population groups were compared.
The implications of using 16 PF, SA92 were outlined and several assessment options were presented for users of the 16 PF, SA92. / Industrial and Organisational Psychology / M. Admin. (Industrial Psychology)
