Sacred Games - Becoming Gods : Priming digital game ethics

Falk, Anders January 2019 (has links)
The point of departure for my research is a perceived breach and resulting dissonance between how digital games and other parts of society that are similar in form, enact certain aspects of life. This shift was made especially clear in massive multiplayer games in 2004 with the release of World of Warcraft, the design of which panders to cultural weak points, rather than attempting to mimic them. Digital games are far-reaching. In February 2019, ‘Apex Legends’ reached over 10 million players in less than 72 hours. Nonetheless, the idea of games as separate from the ‘real’ is persisting. Digital games have become a cyclopean gathering of liminality, and there are still no form-based ethics emerging, from either industry or society. Even though society is now undergoing the same abstracting digitisation, that has been a base for game design for a long time, there is a continuing separation in the knowledge applying to games or ‘reality’. The purpose of this thesis is to explore different ontological, epistemological, and ethical understandings of digital games as media, technology, modes of experience, and form. This is undertaken by using the situated and reality producing grating1 of technoscience, together with an eclectic range of concepts such as media as a message, agential reality, liminal phases, anticipation, and ergon. The research delineates a primer for applied studies within the rhizomatic structure of digital games, digitisation, technoscience, and media-technology. In accordance with this aim, the thesis has a fragmented, non-linear, and mosaic approach. This licentiate thesis is a compilation of three papers with a complementary introduction and an epilogue.

Psallendae Mariae: Marian Processional Chants of the Ambrosian Rite

Bruno, Emilie 07 December 2012 (has links)
This interdisciplinary study examines a collection of chants intrinsically connected to the larger body of Western Chant: the psallendae. These chants of the Ambrosian rite, the form of Christian worship proper to the archdiocese of Milan, were sung during religious processions. With over 700 psallendae assigned to the Church calendar, this study examines only those assigned to feast days of the Virgin Mary, and in doing so, reveals a rich history of devotion to her. The primary sources examined are thirteenth-century manuscripts and medieval liturgical manuals. The processional chants are subjected to a thorough literary and musical analysis. Rooted in François-Auguste Gevaert's thematic theory, and using tools of reticular and stemmatic analysis, the psallendae are grouped according to melodic profile. Each group is then reduced to a core melodic theme, which, when juxtaposed with the ancient practice of religious processions, makes a compelling argument for the psallendae as among the oldest Christian chants.

Gaucher, Karine January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
______________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : Actionniste, Rituel, Violence, Transgression, Tabou.

Sacrificing the Jaguar Baby : understanding a classic Maya myth on codex-style pottery

Steinbach, Penny Janice 11 August 2015 (has links)
The Jaguar Baby vessels belong to a large corpus of Late Classic Maya pictorial ceramics dubbed Codex-style pottery and originating from archaeological sites, such as El Mirador and Nakbe, in the north-central area of Peten, Guatemala, where they were made for a brief period shortly before and/or after the turn of the eighth century AD. Through strategic juxtapositions of images and words, the vessels convey the story of a rain god and a death spirit who, in the darkness between the sun’s setting and dawn, sacrifice an infant, a jaguar, or an infant with jaguar traits on a mountain in the midst of water, as an offering during the conjuring of an elderly deity. New evidence from a fragmentary Codex-style vessel recovered from the site of Calakmul in the southern half of Campeche, Mexico, suggests that the sacrifice is part of a pre-accession ritual serving to endow royal heirs with the ability to conjure, which, in turn, was integral to assuming the throne. / text

The research investigates how the body (re)configuration by cosmetic plastic surgeries happens, according to the perspective of a specific group of women, who have undergone through plastic surgeries as liposuction and breast augmentation. It is a relatively homogeneous group, regarding to age and social class, and that shares the same ideal of beautiful, successful and independent woman. By the identity affirmation of poderosa (powerful woman), a specific conception of femininity is prized by the group, which is directly linked to the presumed female seductiveness. Within the group, are also shared values related to the health’s moral, or healthism, which defines "good" and "bad" habits, providing standards for individual evaluation in the contemporary modern society. Thus, the poderosa’s body hexis carries distinctive marks that relate it directly to a healthy lifestyle, seen as morally superior. In this context, where the concentrated body fat is seen as impure, the liposuction is (re)interpreted as part of a purification rite. By eliminating the accumulated fat in the body, it’s intended to erase the memory of a past of transgressions against the health’s moral, or healthism, and more specifically, against the rules that control food and work. At its side, the breast augmentation shows not to be an isolated incident in the trajectories studied, but a practice linked to a rise in the social structure, described like financial independence achievement, and moving to more developed urban areas. The purchasing power, combined with the fulfillment of requirements implied in the group standards of body purification, leads these women to the practice of "putting silicone" which can be understood as part of a rite of institution, once it comes to consecrate the inclusion into the valued group of poderosas, marking the differences between this category of woman, typically modern, and those left out: the "fat", the "ugly" and the "poor".

Bernardo José dos Santos, inhabitant of the village, would be nationally known as the Caboclo Bernardo Hero when honored by Princess Isabel, for saving 128 of the 142 crew members at Imperial Marinheiro war ship wreck, near the Doce river s mouth. The event and its consequences became a Mark in the village s history, including the hero s murder in mid-second half of the 20th century. In the narrative, ritual and symbolic continuity of the heroic act of Caboclo Bernardo, this research casts their concerns. Nowadays, every year in the village is celebrated the Caboclo Fernando Party, a festivity to where religious people from different ethnicities - tupiniquim, botocudo, negros and caboclos unite to honor the hero in a chappel named after him. In this way, this ethnography tries to analise the construction process of the village ethnic-religious indentity, since it happens concomitantly and is umbilically related to the process that brings the hero to the level of patron saints of region s congo bands (musical group with religious atributes). Therefore, will be analised the dramatic context where the identity of the town is built, the historical, symbolic and narratives confluences that contribute to the current configuration of identity, and political-institutional context organized around the Caboclo Bernardo, central paradigm of the construction of identity . The ethnographic method, the interpretative anthropology and visual anthropology provided the methodological contours of the research, which constituted as a dense description.(AU) / Na Vila de Regência Augusta, às margens do Rio Doce no município de Linhares - ES, uma intricada dinâmica sócio-religiosa reveste de atribuições religiosas um herói cujo feito remonta os finais do século XIX.

The understanding of how the mind process the manifestations of the religious phenomenon in the practice of religous people occurs by the rites orchestration, as they function as the myth preservation and renovation. The relationship between homo religious and the binomial sacred/unholy happenening depens on environment, objects or the psycological states that will vary the level of abstraction in the practice of the rites. Aiming to increase the knowledge about religious phenomenon, the object of study in the Religions Science, it is proposed the observation the rite of the Holy Communion celebrated by the Historic Protestants, through an interview with ministers and those of historical Protestantism doing a qualitative research with ethnographic outlining in order to answer the question: What meaning the followers of historical Protestantism give the symbolism of the essential elements of bread and wine in the rite of Holy Communion? The research will contribute on the understanding of the meaning given to this rite on the followers of the Lutheran, Anglican, and Presbyterian churches, which are within the historiacal Protestantism derived from the Religious Reformation of the Sixteenth century. The method we will use to analyze the reported and observed senses is the Discursive Textual Analysis, through interviews where the questions were aimed at the description of the meanings attributed by the subjects to participate in the rite of Holy Communion, and where the data collected from interviews with social texts participants of the rite will be applied according to the durandiano paradigm (1997). The research is justified in the field of Sciences of Religions considering that seeks to identify the religious phenomenon among followers of a significant segment of Christianity. Symbolic systems, associations, decoding, tradition, memory and transformation underlie the symbolic imagination of the historical Protestantism through the meaning of the elements bread and wine, instituted by Jesus Christ as a memorial to his sacrifice symbolically narrated through the Communion rite. Looking at ancient practice of this rite searching to understand its theological implications through Sensitivity Structures will contribute to advance the general knowledge of the man and his religiosity, through anthropological approach Imaginary Gerald Theory by Gilbert Durand.
