Academic Achievement and the Ability of Post-Secondary Students to Read Assigned Materials

Cohick, Mikel William 08 1900 (has links)
This study provides a rationale for adopting course materials. It demonstrates the relationship between ability to read assigned materials and academic achievement, and that selection of materials creates two groups having different probabilities of success. The sample was selected from a population of all students enrolled in Principles of Economics courses at North Texas State University in the spring semester of 1986. The Nelson-Denny Reading Test was used to determine reading ability. Assigned materials were analyzed for readability. A frustration level was determined and used to divide the sample: the group of interest, those with reading abilities below the frustration level who underwent the treatment of reading materials written above their ability to comprehend; and the comparison group, those with reading abilities above the frustration level who did not undergo the treatment.

A Comparison of Three Methods of Administering Interest Inventories to Students with Varied Reading Achievement

Iley, John L. (John Lee) 05 1900 (has links)
The purposes of this study were (1) to ascertain the total absolute change scores between student basic interest scale scores on the Strong-Campbell Interest Inventory (SCII) and like scores on the audio interest inventory (All), and the audio-visual interest inventory (AVII), which are based on the SCII; and (2) to ascertain if a statistically significant relationship exists between students with high reading ability and students with low reading ability, when different test-retest inventory administration methods are used.

The Symptoms of Childhood Depression as Factors in Children's Reading Difficulties

Werner, Patrice Holden 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate symptoms of childhood depression as factors in elementary school age children's reading difficulties. Subjects for study included children who evidenced symptoms of depression from among those referred to the Pupil Appraisal Center (PAC) at North Texas State University for reading difficulties between October, 1983, and April, 1985. The Weinberg Affective Scale (WAS), a screening device for childhood depression, was used to identify the subjects for this study. Using document analysis as the research approach, the researcher examined, recorded, and categorized referral and evaluation statements made by parents, teachers, counselors, and reading specialists the subjects1 PAC files that described symptoms of childhood depression. Also analyzed were diagnostic test data from the evaluation reports of PAC counselors and reading specialists.

A Study to Determine the Differences in Gains in Reading Ability between Two Methods of Instruction in Language Arts

Boyd, Danny Wayne 08 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in gains in reading ability for two seventh-grade groups taught by two different methods of instruction in language arts. The two methods were: 1) instruction with a reading-improvement program utilizing the SRA Reading Laboratory, and 2) regular instruction in language arts.

A Study to Determine Some Relations Between Changes in Reading Skills and Self-Concepts Accompanying a Remedial Program for Boys with Low Reading Ability and Reasonably Normal Intelligence

Seay, Lesten Clare 08 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine some relations between changes in reading skills and changes in certain selected aspects of self-concept accompanying a remedial-reading program for elementary school boys with low reading ability and reasonably normal intelligence.

Att bygga läsförståelse med hjälp av lässtrategier

Hansson, Natalie, Mavraj, Ilirjana January 2020 (has links)
Studien behandlade huruvida lässtrategier ger positiv effekt i läsförståelse.

The Relationship Between Intelligence and Two Major Categories of Reading Comprehension: Literal-Explicit and Inferential-Implicit

Mosley, Mary Hardy 08 1900 (has links)
This study examined correlations between assessed intelligence and two major categories of reading comprehension: literal-explicit and inferential-implicit. In addition, efficiency of prediction for criterion variables was investigated by utilizing two regression models which incorporated intelligence scores squared and the square root of intelligence scores. Since it is generally accepted that the higher the assessed intelligence of an individual, the higher will be his achievement in all areas of reading comprehension, the present study sought to discover whether there was a curvilinear relationship between intelligence and the two categories of reading comprehension with the factor of intelligence statistically controlled. It was felt that the hypothesized curvilinear relationship would result in significantly better performance by brighter students on inferential questions and significantly better performance by less-bright students on literal questions. Although no cause and effect has been established, based on the data presented in this study and within the. limitations of this study, the following conclusions seem tenable. 1. Since reading comprehension may be viewed as a thinking process, it is important to note that a relationship exists between the assessed intelligence of an individual and his performance on both literal and inferential tests of that process. 2. This study has demonstrated the curvilinear nature of the relationships hypothesized. The higher the assessed intelligence of an individual, the increasingly higher will be his performance on inferential questions. Brighter students tend to make more inferences, but they lose some detail in the process. The less bright students, on the other hand, do very well with detail questions but experience less success in making inferences concerning what is read.

Winerdal-Arnö, Malin, Brohn, Ulrika January 2024 (has links)
