Wanda, Gould, and Sting: sounding, othering, and hearing early music

Kjar, David Niels 18 November 2015 (has links)
This dissertation examines the creative work of harpsichordist Wanda Landowska, pianist Glenn Gould, and singer/songwriter Sting to address aesthetic and revivalist notions of early-music performance practice in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. I accomplish this by viewing their early-music recordings through two different but interrelated lenses: sound and otherness. By closely comparing Landowska's performances to those of Gould not just in terms of choice of instruments but, more importantly, of rhythmic projection, structural articulation, and other fundamental musical choices, a definable early-music "sound" emerges that transcends the movement’s traditional borders. Early music becomes a sonically identifiable phenomenon transmitted by performers of various training, affiliations, and epochs, rather than a loosely connected politicized movement precariously perched on claims of historical (authenticity) and timbrel (period instruments) grounds. I further illuminate this sound within the context of a performed "exoticism," signified by exotic instruments, style, and attitude. In these terms, I focus on Landowska's reception in the early twentieth century, comparing it to the reception of Gould's individualized twentieth-century Bach recordings and, as a twenty-first century venture into early music, the reception of Sting's 2006 recording of Elizabethan lute songs by John Dowland. By repositioning "Early" as "Other," a more relevant framework emerges for discussing how early-music performances over time construct and reflect a sense of authenticity in the movement and, conversely, how that construct affects its performers and its public.

“Get those hot buns in here, girl” Estudio de recepción de la traducción del doble sentido en el doblaje de Hora de aventura

Suarez Silva, Luciana, Schultz Olaechea, Diego Ignacio 20 July 2020 (has links)
Translating humor is one of the greatest challenges for a translator when it comes to Audiovisual Translation (AVT). This, along with the diversity of receptors, makes the translator's job even more complex, as the translator must find a way to preserve the original meaning of the segment to be translated, and in some cases make sure that the product is suitable for both children and adults. For this reason, the research main focus is to analyze the reception of children, from 7 to 11 years old, and young adults, from 18 to 22 years old, of the dubbed version of the animated series Adventure Time, taking into account that there are factors, such as the techniques used in the translation of the cultural product, that could affect its perception; in particular, the understanding of the double meaning, since the use of certain translation techniques may help the text be easier for receptors to understand the message, or conversely, make it difficult to understand. By conducting surveys of 4 groups of 25 students (2 groups made up of children and 2 other groups made up of adults), we will investigate their understanding of the double meaning jokes in the dubbed version of the series. / Trabajo de investigación

The Challenge of Happily Ever After: How Once Upon a Time Fanfic Fairy Tales Model Strategies for Ordinary Life Challenges

Baxter, Christa M. 19 June 2014 (has links) (PDF)
Although many feminist fairy-tale scholars have theorized how the tales shape the lives of their readers, few have explicitly examined what readers themselves have to say about how fairy tales impacted their choices and expectation. This article turns to fanfiction written by fans of ABC's Once Upon a Time television series to discover how these fans challenge or reify fairy-tale expectations, particularly in terms of gender. After outlining the brief history of fairy-tale reception studies concerned with gender, the article then turns to a close reading of three OUAT fanfiction retellings of Beauty and the Beast that show the couple in contemporary settings dealing with ordinary and magic-less problems, such as a loveless marriage, sexual violence, and the stillbirth of a child. The close reading of these stories reveal that even as they challenge the passive princess ideal seen in many early Disney retellings, they also challenge the ideal of the handsome prince who can ensure a happily ever after. Instead of saving the heroine from impending trauma, the hero must support her as she copes after trauma has already struck. In each of these stories, the couples must empathetically relate to each other's pain, support rather than force the recovery process, and redefine happily ever after as dynamic, peaceful moments rather than an absolute, static ending. The analysis of fanfiction writer and reader interactions reveals that these stories are also used as models for the readers' and writers' own experiences in supporting friends who have gone through trauma, emphasizing that fairy tales are still relevant to their readers' lives.

A Diachronic Study of Clytemnestra's Characterization in the Agamemnon

Fiorelli, Maia January 2022 (has links)
My thesis examines the evolution of Clytemnestra’s characterization throughout the generations of receptions of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon. This diachronic study investigates how Clytemnestra’s complex use of gender, specifically her use of masculinity, allows her character to be understood in a different light by a modern audience in contrast to the original perception of her character in antiquity. In analysing the aspects that contribute to Clytemnestra’s ancient characterization, which display her to be dangerously masculine to a fifth-century male audience, the meaning behind her behaviour is also revealed, as it opens a discussion on masculinity in Athens through Clytemnestra’s emasculation of the men around her. The true depth of her character is revealed through a study of Clytemnestra’s modern characterization, as modern audiences are able to recognize the sympathetic aspects of her character in the text, which are reflected through the various feminist adaptations and performances today. The paradox of Clytemnestra’s characterization demonstrates the impact that she has not only on the plot of the play, but also on its survival, as her complexity is what continues to engage audiences in modernity. The findings of this thesis will demonstrate the importance of female characters in Greek tragedy through examining the various layers of Clytemnestra’s character that are uncovered by comparing her characterization in antiquity and modernity, thus proving that her figure, and tragedy overall, has the ability to evolve and influence audiences yet to come through the impact of these dynamic women. / Thesis / Master of Arts (MA)

Unlocking Poliphilo’s Dream: Towards a digital scholarly edition of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili

Priki, Efthymia January 2024 (has links)
Hypnerotomachia Poliphili is a fifteenth-century illustrated incunabulum first published in 1499 by Aldo Manuzio in Venice. It delivers the story of two lovers separated by death but united in a dream; in fact, the entire book is a complex, multi-layered dream narrative which gradually unfolds through the interaction between text and image, inviting readers to engage with its rich content in a playful manner. The envisioned “Digital Hypnerotomachia Project" (DHP) aspires to create a platform where the encoded transcriptions and facsimiles of the various early printed editions of this literary work can be comparatively viewed and where users can interact with the text by clicking on annotated words, phrases, or images that lead to associations within, between, and outside the texts; and, ultimately, where users can generate their own annotations and share them with the community of readers. The most important features of such an edition would be, in my opinion, the annotations and tags, that will become the stepping stones towards a better and deeper understanding of the texts, their socio-cultural and literary contexts, and their intertextual relationship, hopefully opening up new pathways for research.  My thesis aims at the creation of a prototype edition, for which I will focus on the first chapter of the book. The aim is to create a parallel edition that will include some of the paratexts and first chapters of the original Italian Aldine edition, the two sixteenth-century French translations, and the sixteenth-century English translation. The omissions, additions, and changes in the early modern translations of the Hypnerotomachia can be quite revealing about the ways in which the text (and its images) was received, interpreted and adapted by early modern learned audiences. Regarding the editorial process, I will move gradually from digitization and transcription to TEI:XML encoding and publication, that is, the development of a user interface, but this will not necessarily be a linear progress, as constant re-evaluation will probably lead to adjustments and reiterations. The most important stage in the editorial process will be the TEI:XML encoding, which I perceive to be an interpretative process. The resulting annotated parallel edition prototype will hopefully show the potential of this type of edition for the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili and its translations, and this pilot project may demonstrate its merits for critical comparative analyses of the work in research and in education.

Celebrity and fandom on Twitter : examining electronic dance music in the Digital Age

Anaipakos, Jessica Lyle 28 February 2013 (has links)
This thesis looks at electronic dance music (EDM) celebrity and fandom through the eyes of four producers on Twitter. Twitter was initially designed as a conversation platform, loosely based on the idea of instant-messaging but emerged in its current form as a micro-blog social network in 2009. EDM artists count on the website to promote their music, engage with fans, discover new songs, and contact each other. More specifically, Twitter is an extension of a celebrity’s private life, as most celebrities access Twitter from their cellphones and personal computers, cutting out gatekeepers from controlling their image. Four power player producers in EDM are used as case studies for analysis of the intimacy and reach Twitter provides. Chosen because of their visibility, style, and recognition, Deadmau5, Diplo, Skrillex, and Tiësto represent different EDM subgenres, run their own record labels, have dedicated fans, and are accessible through social media. All use Twitter to announce shows, interact with fans, promote contests and merchandise, and share stories and pictures of their personal lives with their fan followers. Tweets are a direct line for fans to communicate with these celebrities through the reply, retweet (RT), and mention functions on Twitter. Fan tweets to and from these EDM celebrities are also examined by looking at celebrity-fan encounters in the cyber world and the real world, aftereffects of celebrity RTs, and engagement with said celebrities. The internet is the lifeline for this subculture as it changed the way EDM is shared, promoted, and packaged. Twitter and other social media sites give producers the exposure they never experienced with traditional media and allow fans to participate in a global subculture. To sum up, this is a study on how Twitter influenced EDM and personalized the relationship between producers and fans. / text

« Esprit de Maupassant » : Henry James and the French realist movement, a re-evaluation / .

Boyington, Mary 18 December 2017 (has links)
In 1888, Henry James wrote in his notebooks, "Oh spirit of Maupassant, come to my aid!" This invocation of the French writer whom he met in Paris in 1875-76 marked a major change in James' work and introduced an evolution in his production of short fiction during the 1890s. The purpose of this study is to present the connections between these two authors by analyzing James's critical essays on French realism as well as his short fiction inspired by Maupassant's work. This critical study consists of five chapters as well as an introduction which points to a "blind spot" in the critical field of Henry James studies in relation to Maupassant. The first chapter analyzes Henry James as a literary critic in his essays on French realism published from 1865 to 1878. Chapter two relates the year spent in Paris during James's youth among the literary giants of Flaubert's circle. The third chapter demonstrates the evolution of James' critical thinking by analyzing his essays on Guy de Maupassant (1888, 1899) and a presentation of his philosophy on his own literary production of short fiction. Chapter four explores the critical reception and translation these authors' works of fiction in country the language of the other. The fifth and final chapter presents a textual analysis of works by Henry James influenced by Maupassant's contes and nouvelles.Following his encounter and his reading of Maupassant, James will pursue the spirit of this writer during the decade of the 1890s. However, James does not fully succeed in his attempts to imitate Maupassant. This quest will nevertheless lead to a significant redefinition of his own style.

The methodology includes two analytical approaches: the first focuses on the field of production, from the assumptions of Discourse Analysis and Queer Studies, checking the textual aspects of discourse and representation of gay characters in soap operas. The second approach focuses on the field of circulation and consumption, by the assumptions of Reception Studies, in order to assess how the receivers perform the appropriation of discourse and representation of homosexual soap opera. This second approach has a quantitative instrument and a semistructured qualitative interview, applied to a sample of 402 participants, heterosexual and homosexual, mostly young graduate students in Belo Horizonte, MG. As for discourse analyzes, the results demonstrate a change in the pattern of representation of gay characters, moving the heteronormative for a more humanized standard representation, following the historical moment of political maturity of society and the introduction of legal frameworks favorable to homosexual subjects. As for Reception Studies, the results confirm the pedagogical potential of the soap opera to broaden the discussion on homoaffective question; assist the gay guy to accept his sexual identity and encourage him to disclose his sexual orientation.

"The Essence of Greekness": The Parthenon Marbles and the Construction of Cultural Identity

Doyle, Alice 01 January 2018 (has links)
This thesis explores the relationship between the Classical Greek legacy and today’s world by examining the past two hundred years of controversy surrounding Lord Elgin’s removal of the Parthenon Marbles from Athens. Since the Marbles were purchased by the British Museum in 1816, they have become symbols of democratic values and Greek cultural identity. By considering how the Parthenon Marbles are talked about by different people over the years, from art connoisseurs and Romantic poets of the early 19th century to nationalist political activists of the late 20th century, this thesis demonstrates that the fight for the Marbles’ return to Greece is about more than just the sculptures themselves. It is about national heritage and cultural identity.
