The Impact Of Ceo And Human Capital Characteristics On Sme Export Performance

Mert, Ayse 01 September 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The objective of this study is to investigate the determinants of the export behavior of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Turkey. In SMEs, key decision makers play important roles / therefore, studying the impact of managerial characteristics is of paramount importance for understanding the determinants of SME export behavior. Particularly, possible relations between CEO age, tenure, level of education, international experience and foreign language skills and the export performance of SMEs will be examined. While doing this, two distinct theories, namely, upper echelons perspective and resource-based view of the firm (RBV) will be integrated. Furthermore, the study will focus on the role of the human capital as a strategic resource that may enhance the SME export performance. The relations between international experience and foreign language skills of the human capital and SME export performance will be analyzed from upper echelons perspective and RBV point of view. Overall, this study attempts to illustrate that CEOs and human resources are valuable, rare, inimitable and non-substitutable resources for SMEs, and that studying their attributes in SME internationalization context is crucial to understanding the determinants of expert activities of SMEs. As a result, this study expects to reveal important implications for those who aim at increasing the export performance of SMEs. Practitioners may benefit from the findings by addressing which managerial and human capital characteristics influence SME export behavior and in which directions, so that they can better match the characteristics of CEOs and human capital with SMEs in order to attain higher export performance.

A case study: creating and sustaining competitive advantage through an information technology application in the lodging industry

Cho, Wonae 03 October 2007 (has links)
The use of information technology (IT) is becoming an essential component within the commercial sector. While large number of companies have adopted IT applications to achieve competitive advantage, and number of studies have been done on competitive advantage through an IT application, it is not clear what the impact of an IT application on competitive advantage is. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of an IT application on competitive advantage and how to create and sustain competitive advantage through an IT application. For that purpose, this study adopted Sethi and King's (1994) instrumental tool, while the theory of resource based view of the firm (RBV) was the theoretical underpinning for the investigation of how to create and sustain competitive advantage through an IT application. In other words, this study examined how an IT application impacts the seven dimensions which are attributes of competitive advantage through an IT application, and how a firm's resources and capabilities, which are measured in three dimensions. moderate the impact of an IT application on competitive advantage. The three dimensions were identified from the review of literature concerning on the theory of RBV. / Ph. D.

THE IMPACT OF TRAINING AND ITS INTEGRATION IN THE FIRM'S BUSINESS STRATEGIES ON THE FIRM'S COMPETITIVENESS

Sum, Vichet 01 December 2009 (has links)
The problem of the present study was to determine training professionals' perceptions of their awareness of and involvement in the integration of training in the firm's business strategies and the impact of training on the firm's competitiveness. The analysis of data obtained from the online survey of 111 participants who were training professionals employed in small, medium, and large firms across three different industries - service, retailing, and manufacturing - revealed that more than 50% of the participants indicated that they either had some understanding of or understood in depth the integration of training in their firms' business strategies. And more than 50% of the participants reported moderate, high, or very high involvement in the integration of training in their firms' business strategies. Moreover, the majority of the participants rated the impact of training on measures of their firms' competitiveness moderate, high, or very high. In addition, the participants were most frequently based on their communication with colleagues and management team regarding their perceptual judgment of the impact of training on all measures of their firms' competitiveness. There was a statistically significant relationship between the participants' firm sizes and the extent to which training contributed to three of the measures of their firms' innovation. Finally, the results indicated a statistically significant positive relationship, r(98) = .576, p < .01, between training professionals' perceived involvement in the integration of training in their firms' business strategies and the impact of training on their firms' competitiveness.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2221254 bytes, checksum: 8222669dfaf7f2816001becf4b118c4e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-02-23 / The present study aimed to analyze the impact of information technology (IT) capabilities on the maturity of the project management of a power sector company. For the theme comprehension, the study was based on the project management and its areas of knowledge, on project management maturity, on organizational resources, on the dynamic capabilities and IT capabilities. It sought to describe the relationship of IT capabilities with project management with the intention of highlighting the value of IT capabilities in performance for promotion above the level of organizational processes, reflected in the evolution of maturity of the project management and therefore the achievement of a sustained competitive advantage. The research was conducted through an interpretive case study and was guided by a qualitative approach that aimed to identify, through understanding of the stories of the experiences of project managers, the impacts of IT capabilities in the evolution of the maturity of the project management and its areas of knowledge. The research was conducted with ten project managers of a company in the electricity sector which operates in the state of Paraiba and is controlled by a group of companies that operates in the service sector of the Brazilian electric sector. The data collection process came from the knowledge areas of project management, from the project management maturity model (PMMM) and from six categories of IT capabilities: IT business partnerships, external IT linkages, business IT strategic thinking, IT business process integration, IT infrastructure and IT management. The analysis, interpretation and discussion of the results revealed that the IT infrastructure, linkages with external partners IT and integration of business processes and IT were the categories of IT capabilities that impacted the most knowledge areas. The impact of each of these categories of IT capabilities was evident in on least five of the ten knowledge areas studied. Also pointed the reach of the fourth level of maturity MMGP for seven of the ten areas of knowledge. The areas that reached stage four, called managed level were: managing scope, cost, deadlines, communication, risk, quality and integration. But the management of human resources, procurement and stakeholder reached stage three named set or standard level. The main contributions of the studies were: evidence of impacts of IT capabilities in organizational process level and ease in identifying the benefits of IT capabilities, from the process level approach, and contribution to reduction of a gap on the theme. This work indicates directions for future studies that seek to measure the TI impact in process level and studies that address the theme addressed to contribute to reducing the gap of work involving project management and IT capabilities.

This work is about 'Social and Environmental Resource-Based Strategy and its Impact on the Causal Ambiguity' and aim to answer the following research question: What is the relationship between social and environmental resource-based strategy and causal ambiguity? More specifically, the creation of causal ambiguity through social and environmental resources and capabilities, so it makes sense to consider causal ambiguity as a dependent variable, and the social and environmental capabilities independent variables (predictors). In this line, social and environmental capabilities have causally ambiguous characteristics advocated by Reed and DeFillippi (1990), namely, tacitness, complexity and specificity. These characteristics are essential for the resource or capability has the potential to generate causal ambiguity. Based on the theoretical framework, I established which resources and capabilities is closely linked to social and environmental issues, while having causally ambiguous characteristics. Thus, the following resources and capabilities emerge from the literature, (a) social and environmental orientation, (b) stakeholder engagement, (c) environmental improvement, and (d) human capital. Using multiple linear regression, the dependent variable (causal ambiguity) was regressed in function of the independent variables (that formed the four mentioned constructs). As a result, only corporate governance (social and environmental orientation construct) and society / community (stakeholder engagement construct) impacted positively on the causal ambiguity. Finally, the use of causal ambiguity as a dependent variable is a really new and relevant for future studies in the RBV, as well as the relationship between social and environmental strategy and causal ambiguity. Thus, it can be stated that the results of this exploratory research have potential to broaden the discussion on the intersection of RBV and CSER studies, and open several possibilities for future research, as marked in the conclusions of this work.

Competitiveness and strategic change : a longitudinal study of the interactions between tourism industry and air Seychelles 1970 to 2007

Padayachy, Lunez Jude 06 1900 (has links)
In studying organisational change in Air Seychelles, the context, content and process of change together with the interconnections of the airline and the tourism industry in Seychelles through time is explored. The literature review shows that the substantive issues of interest to this study, contextualism as a theory of methods in management research, requires a case based research in particular with regards to the following gaps in the literature: the integration of inner and outer perspectives on sustaining competitive advantage, and conceptual insights on how strategy links firms and their environment. The study adopted a contextual and processual framework to build a theoretical perspective of competitive advantage. The study contributes to the field of strategic management and tourism development in Seychelles in the following ways: firstly, the development of a contextual and processual framework to explain the transformation of firms over time; secondly, the development of an understanding of the historical context of the tourism industry and its interactions with other sectors of the Seychelles economy; thirdly, developing an understanding of how Air Seychelles developed its resources and capabilities to sustain competitive advantage; fourthly, linking change processes and action to performance and in a sense developing an understanding on strategy implementation of strategic management practice in Air Seychelles. The study sheds some light on strategy formation and implementation at the firm level, and the dynamics between the firm and the industry. The findings suggest that firms respond opportunistically to external discontinuities in a dynamic environment - the entrepreneurial leadership of a firm prepares and support managers to operate under conditions of great uncertainty and ambiguity and allows them to behave opportunistically. / Graduate School of Business Leadership / DBL / Thesis (D. There is a great need to justify the investments in this area and an expectation to promote superior performance from the use of IT resources and capabilities. Therefore, it is important to clarify the IT value and role in the firms. Changes and high velocity marketing contexts are major challenges to environmental organizations. In this sense, the IT use decisions should be able to mobilize IT resources and capabilities to respond to organizational environment changes and IT performance should be evaluated for their contribution to business processes, rather than to try linking on a direct relationship to overall performance in which many variables obscure the real IT value. This study is based on resource-based view of the firm (RBV), dynamic capabilities and complementarities of organizational resources. Two guidelines are proposed for IT use decisions. The first one is driven by IT reconfigurability and complementary capabilities. The second one is driven by IT infrastructure, personal and partnerships assets. The performance is evaluated by the IT use competences in terms of aspects of their functionality and market requirements relative to IT process. This empirical investigation assessed its goal considering a sample of professionals responsible for IT decision making and planning in Brazilian organizations. Datas were analyzed through partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM). The main results indicated strong and significant effects of capabilities-oriented IT use decisions over their assets-oriented. It was revealed that personal assets-oriented IT use decisions are the ones that influence the performance of IT funcionality competences. Finally, it was evident the importance of IT use decisions treatment as a dynamic capability even without the influence of the moderating effect of the turbulence of organizational environment. The main scholarly contributions are filling the gap of decisions involving the use of IT, its performance on process level within the organizational context of Brazil, and theoretical use of the resource-based view of the firm and dynamic capabilities as background able to promote IT value. Among the main contributions to professional practices stands out to take in account of reconfigurability and complementarity capability of IT resources in their use decisions along with other organizational resources so that they can get a better process performance. The study shows promising future researches in assessing the IT value and development of measures and constructs more appropriate to its evaluation.

Alliance portfolios and value creation: Theory and empirical evidence from the global airline industry

Wassmer, Ulrich Franz 21 May 2007 (has links)
Do alliance portfolios matter? How do resources accessed from multiple simultaneous strategic alliances with different partners affect value creation and value appropriation? Do alliance portfolios explain heterogeneity across firms with respect to the value that they derive from entering into new strategic alliances? This dissertation builds on insights from the resource-based view of the firm and the strategic behaviour and competitive dynamics literature and advances a theoretical model that addresses value creation and appropriation in firms that access resources through multiple simultaneous inter-firm alliances with different partners. The model illustrates that value creation on the alliance portfolio level is a function of the value created from synergistic resource combinations involving resources accessed from different partners as well the value destroyed by incompatibilities between a focal firm's resource combinations and those deployed by its partners. Based on this theoretical model, empirically testable hypotheses are developed in a marginal setting, in which a multilaterally connected firm adds one new strategic alliance to its alliance portfolio. The hypotheses are tested using an event study method approach and data from the global airline industry on code share agreements formed between 1994 and 1998. The results show that the market on one side rewards firms entering into strategic alliances with partners that possess complementary resources and that contribute resources that cannot only be combined with firms' own but also existing relational resources and that are compatible with the firms' alliance portfolios. On the other side, results show that the market penalizes firms entering into alliances that contribute resources that are alliance portfolio incompatible in the sense that they create a competitive conflict with some of the existing alliance partners. The findings of the empirical part of this dissertation support the view that alliance portfolios affect the performance of firms entering into strategic alliances. This study concludes that resources accessed through inter-firm alliances should not only be evaluated on their standalone and dyadic attributes but also in the context of alliance portfolios.
