Evaluating the conservation potential of urban and rural ecosystems for aquatic-breeding amphibians: a case study of two native frogs in southwestern British ColumbiaGreen, Jemma 27 September 2018 (has links)
The conservation of aquatic-breeding amphibian populations and their habitats is increasingly challenged by urban and rural development, which is occurring more intensively and more rapidly than ever before. Some species are now impacted by development throughout their range. This has forced a re-evaluation of the potential of developed landscapes for providing habitat and contributing to regional conservation strategies. For many amphibians, little is known about the criteria necessary for persistence in a developed landscape. Considerable variation in the physiology, habitat requirements, and movement behaviour of amphibians suggests that responses to habitat loss, alteration, and fragmentation are species-specific. In this thesis, I investigate species-habitat relationships for the northern red-legged frog (Rana aurora) and the Pacific chorus frog (Pseudacris regilla) in a mixed urban-rural landscape in southwestern British Columbia to evaluate the potential for species persistence despite urban and rural development throughout their range. I used repeat auditory surveys of the species’ breeding chorus to determine presence or absence at potential breeding wetlands. I then related species occurrence and abundance to characteristics of the aquatic and terrestrial environment measured at multiple spatial scales. Both species were found to use rural and urban wetlands, though R. aurora were rarely detected while P. regilla were common. Occurrence was best explained by characteristics of the terrestrial environment, rather than within-wetland characteristics, though influential terrestrial characteristics and their scale of impact differed between species. Within the context of the developed landscape, I identify species-specific positive and negative habitat associations and suggest the spatial scales at which management of these habitat characteristics will be most effective. These criteria may help to explain the species’ current distribution, prioritize management strategies, predict the effectiveness of habitat conservation and restoration projects, and inform development in municipalities seeking to maintain or enhance amphibian diversity. / Graduate / 2019-09-11

O distrito de Sarandira: mudanças e permanências na paisagem / The region of Sarandira : changes and remains in the landscapePetronio Foscarini Neto 30 April 2008 (has links)
The region of Sarandira, a district of Juiz de Fora located in the area known as Zona da Mata Mineira, has several important cultural and natural resources. Historical remnants of the economical cycle of coffee can still be found in the local architecture. It is also possible to find fragments of the native forest, as well as water resources and a diversified fauna, all of great ecological value. These valuable resources were recognized during the research phase of the present work, when the need for conservation also became clear. The last issue is specially true when one considers the growth of Juiz de Foras urban area over the region studied, a process which, although only in its beginning, will most certainly cause drastic transformations in the local landscape in a near future. This uncontrolled growth may be regarded as a very representative example of the Brazilian public policy concerning the rural zones, which seeks a fixed model of urbanization without taking into account the particularities of each case. The main goal of this work is to support the protection of this endangered heritage and to fit it in the current scenario of environmental crisis and growing demand for life quality. In this context, it seems clear that the institution of an APA (similar to Protected Landscapes of IUCN) would improve the social, economical and environmental aspects of the region of Sarandira. This protected area could serve as a reference, governed by the principles of sustainable development. As a final contribution of this work, a plan for the landscape of the region studied was outlined, considering not only ecological aspects, but also the active environmental legislation.

This study sought to first conduct a study on the conceptual landscape concept, one of the traditional categories of analysis of geography. For this, resorted to epistemological analysis of how the concept was used throughout the history of geographical science, from the classical period to the present. A special emphasis is given to addressing the humanistic school of geography, one that deepened in most geographical studies employing the landscape as a way of understanding society constructs, perceives and considers the elements that make up the geographical space. It was also not forgotten the contribution of the critical school, because all the natural landscape will be transformed by human action, producing and reproducing new landscapes. Through the concept landscape, was selected for analysis a phenomenon quite traditional in geographical studies, transition and interrelation between the rural and the urban space, one of the most noticeable changes landscape of the land surface. Issue within the rural / urban is focused on the phenomenon of the new rurality, yet little studied in the geographical environment, analyzing move back to the values of rural society by the inhabitants of the city. A case study was conducted in the Zona da Mata Mining, highlighting the Valley Paraibuna and the location rural / urban Joazal, which sought to identify the characteristics of the region and place this interface.

What is the contribution of semi-natural habitats to the diversity and distribution of circulating and overwintering Carabidae in a temperate rural landscape ?Roume, Anthony 09 June 2011 (has links)
Supporting biodiversity is an ethical as well as a practical issue since it provides numerous ecosystem services. In that purpose, it is necessary to determine how organisms use the different habitats in rural landscapes. In this view, recent studies suggest that a number of arthropods cyclically colonise cultures, where they feed and reproduce, and semi-natural areas, where they overwinter. We aimed to determine the local and landscape determinants of spatial distribution and structure of ground beetle (Coleoptera: Carabidae) assemblages in a rural landscape of south-western France. We studied spatial distribution patterns of ground beetles at landscape and habitat scales, and at two key periods of their life, that when they are active, and winter. We then considered biological and ecological traits to deduce from these spatial patterns ecological processes affecting ground beetles. Our results show that habitat type has a major effect on species assemblages of active (circulating) as well as overwintering ground beetles, equivalent to that of local conditions and landscape context combined. Edge effects on circulating ground beetles at the woodlot-filed interface were limited to a few meters or a few dozen of meters in both habitats. Amazingly, we found that the density of overwintering ground beetles was two-to six-fold higher in crop margins than in semi-natural habitats. Moreover, we failed to show any difference between the spatial distribution of overwintering ground beetles and circulating ground beetles, whatever the species or functional group considered. Crop margins are thus major overwintering sites in the context studied and cyclic colonisation of ground beetles in crops, if real, may take place between the inner zone and the margins of crops. These results suggest that, in addition to spatial arrangement of semi-natural habitats, crop management, and in particular management of crop margins, is important to promote ground beetles and their beneficial effects on crop protection in agro-forested landscapes.

Farmers' participation in conservation of rural landscapes : A case study of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve (Spain)Torrents, Pau January 2014 (has links)
In an European context of agricultural land abandonment, the role of the farming community as landscape stewards is crucial for maintaining the rural landscape as well as the ecosystem services provided by this landscape. Such stewardship is studied here by assessing the participation of the farming community in the management of Menorca Biosphere Reserve, a small Mediterranean island with very well conserved and rich rural landscape which is not escaping this tendency of land abandonment. A survey of 41 farms and interviews with 15 stakeholders were performed in order to assess the role of the farming community in participatory management processes and the effectiveness of the Menorca Biosphere Reserve Agency (MBRA) in facilitating their participation. The results show that the participatory activities of the MBRA are effective and highly valued by participating stakeholders but could be improved by: 1) engaging non-associated farmers and traditional farmers in the MBRA activities 2) finding a consensual and long-term solution on issues related to the access to private rural land 3) providing rapid feedback to participants after meetings and 4) transforming the MBRA structure in order to deal with changes and an uncertain future. Failing to do this could illegitimate further participatory activities, erode trust among stakeholders and alienate the farming community and the society, thereby affecting the maintenance of the rural landscape. This case study highlights the importance of appropriate management structure for adaptive co-management to benefit from the participation of stakeholders in general and farmers in particular. The findings should be of interest to managers, scholars and practitioners using adaptive co-management approaches to manage complex social-ecological systems such as rural, cultural landscapes.

Territorio e vitivinicoltura nell'Oltrepò Pavese: dall'indagine geostorica alle sfide attuali della geoeconomia / Territory, grape growing and wine making in Oltrepò Pavese: From a geographic investigation to the challenges of the modern global economyMAFFI, LUCIANO 17 February 2009 (has links)
In this thesis we analyse the evolution of grape growing and wine making as two of the elements which have contributed to the shaping of the landscape in the Oltrepò Pavese and represent two of the main economic activities of this geographic area, with is often identified with them – particularly in the mid-western part, i.e., the areas around the towns of Casteggio, Broni and Stradella.
My main goal is to investigate the ways in which the values of locality and typicity – represented by the term terroir – are promoted. “Terroir” stands for, and comprises, a number of elements such as geo-morphological and climatic features, as well as human and cultural factors, all of which contribute to the uniqueness of a product like wine. My research thus starts from, and gives prominence to, the local level, in order to formulate a set of observations from which more general conclusions may then be drawn.
The geographical investigation focusses on the environmental and human factors as well as their interrelationships. In its course, we refer to factors such as geology, pedology and climate, the crucial elements of all studies of «zoning», which describe precisely the complex interaction between grape growing and the environment.
The geo-historical analysis concentrates especially on thematic areas such as the landscape; the varieties of grape that are planted and the respective growing techniques; the production and marketing of the produce; the ways in which property boundaries and the territory have been represented in land registries.
The geo-economic factors, at both the local and global levels, are investigated through the analysis of the data from the production sector. The local context is thus compared to the regional, national and global ones in order to better understand the nature of their interactions and provide useful insights in relation to the challenges posed by the current geo-economic scenarios.

Renewing Athens : the ideology of the past in Roman GreeceMcHugh, Sarah January 2017 (has links)
In this thesis we explore the period of renewal that Athens experienced during the second century AD. This century saw Athens at the peak of her cultural prominence in the Roman Empire: the city was the centre of the League of the Panhellenion and hosted a vibrant sophistic scene that attracted orators from across the Greek world, developments which were ideologically fuelled by contemporary conceptions of Classical Athens. While this Athenian 'golden age' is a standard feature of scholarship on Greek culture under Rome, my thesis delves further to explore the renewal of the urban and rural landscapes at this time and the relationship between that process and constructions of Athenian identity. We approach the renewal of second-century Athens through four lenses: past and present in the Ilissos area; the rhetoric of the Panhellenion; elite conflict and competition; and the character of the Attic countryside. My central conclusions are as follows: 1. The renewal of Athens was effected chiefly by Hadrian and the Athenian elite and was modelled on an ideal Athenian past, strategically manipulated to suit present purpose; the attractions of the fifth-century golden age for this programme of renewal meant that politically contentious history of radical democracy and aggressive imperialism had to be safely rewritten. 2. Athens and Attica retained their uniquely integrated character in the second century. Rural Attica was the subject of a powerful sacro-idyllic ideology and played a vital role in concepts of Athenian identity, while simultaneously serving as a functional landscape of production and inhabitation. 3. The true socio-economic importance of the Attic countryside as a settled and productive landscape should be investigated without unduly privileging the limited evidence from survey, and by combining all available sources, both literary and documentary, with attention to their content, cultural context and ideological relevance.

J.-C. - VIe s. apr. J.-C.) / Living and producing in the country of the colony of Valence (IInd B.C. - VIth A.C.)Gilles, Amaury 12 February 2016 (has links)
During the Antiquity, Valence is known as a roman colony like Lyon, Arles or Vienna, settled in the middle Rhône valley at the confluent of the Rhône and the Isère, and also at the crossroads of alpine route and the Via Agrippa. This strategic position confers to the colony an important role in the economy of the roman Gaul. Since the early Iron Age, this area is a link between the mediterranean and the celtic worlds.Even if the region is conquered by Rome since the end of the II c. B.-C., the colony is founded later, perhaps between 46 and 36 B.-C. and maybe already own his prestigious status of colonia of roman rights according to P. Faure and N. Tran hypothesis (2013). As a consequence of the foundation, the public soil is divided, centuriated, and distributed to thousands of new citizens. In this specific historical context, the citizens are chosen among the veterans of the roman army, who were Italians at this time. This decision should have huge demographic and cultural consequences on local communities. The legal status of the citizens gives them considerable economics advantages that stimulate the local economy. The studies devoted to the gallic provinces have shown that the following centuries see numerous changes affecting settlements and economic structures.Considering this historical context, I have chosen to evaluate the cultural and economic impact of this foundation by studying settlement patterns and material culture (architectural remains, objects of the daily life) between the II c. B.-C. to the VIth c. B.-C.The study of few hundreds of settlements allows us to introduce a complex and diachronic view of the settlements, their economic roles and relations with the colony. The chronological and functional study of the buildings and daily life objects allow us to assess finely the evolution through time about craftsmen’s techniques, lifestyle and highlight regional differences during a same period.

Vast bodies of water are known for their exceptional features and are abundantly studied. Conversely, only a few studies have been focused on the landscapes of rural and agricultural streams. Considering that those watercourses were modified significantly and that, since the 1990s, fewer people residing next to them are farmers, landscape values may have changed.
This research aims to study the value and valuation accorded to a rural or agricultural stream’s landscape by local residents. This is a case study of Vacher stream in Saint-Jacques and Sainte-Marie-Salomé (Lanaudière), which was perceived as “central to development” and then as a “small agricultural ditch”. Therefore, what values and valuations do the locals give to this stream and its landscapes?
As part of a landscape characterization, aerial photos analysis and field work revealed that views on the stream are filtered or closed and that houses erected on its banks turn their back to it. However, fifteen walk-along interviews with residents documented many values associated to Vacher stream’s landscapes, such as environmental, identity and living environment values. Furthermore, respondents valorize (or valorized) the stream through recreational practices.
Thus, Vacher stream and its landscape are imbued with values and valuations. Those promote reflections about possible interventions that could contribute to the resident’s well-being and to environmental imperatives.
