Previous issue date: 2008-11-28 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / This work highlights different conceptions of social justice, and its objective is to supply
basic tools to make social workers able to place themselves in the contemporary debate about the
theme. From one side it is justified due to the denominated social political reconstruction which
comes from global context transformations in the end of the 80 s; transformations involving
debates about public matters redefinition in the present, and it has a main role in the social
political field inserting points related to the State and its relation with civil society as much in
deliberation as in social politic execution, interfering in the social protection standard
configuration. From the other side the need of inciting this professional category- which takes
social justice as their sign to think about the theoretical content given to the expression. The
main supported idea is that the social justice expression application conceals the production
social relations; despite the importance of Marx contribution to the justice theory widening, his
work, certainly, is beyond justice (HELLER, 1998), what means that thinking of distributive or
social justice means to be situated strictly in the middle-class society boundaries. The work
introduction recuperates general points related to the theme, aspects from the ancient and
medieval thought about justice, as well as the justice principles; the objective of this part is to
clean the area , denying certain concepts in the common sense field which disturbs even more
the discussion understanding about the theme. The rest of the work was structured in three parts
which recuperate the great themes supported inside each of these concepts theories, like: the
classic and modern liberalism, the denominated equalitarianism, as well as the radical liberalism
and the denominated liberal-equalitarianism. It's important to inform that this work has no
intention to inscribe in the philosophy history field, but it goes back to the ancients having as
main idea the contemporary debate, over all John Rawls contribution. The last part besides
summarising the topics that give support to the hypothesis defended, it retakes some points to the
Social Work nowadays / O presente trabalho enfoca diferentes concepções de justiça social, objetivando fornecer
aos assistentes sociais instrumentos mínimos para situarem-se no debate contemporâneo sobre o
tema. Justifica-se, por um lado, pela denominada reestruturação das políticas sociais que
decorrem das transformações que se processam a partir do contexto global do final dos anos 80;
principalmente, que: o uso da expressão justiça social oculta as relações sociais de produção;
dessas concepções/teorias, a saber: o liberalismo clássico e moderno, o chamado igualitarismo,
sustentam as hipóteses defendidas, retoma algumas implicações para o Serviço Social hoje

Odborová organizace jako právnická osoba / A trade union as a legal entityTauc, Petr January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is mainly to describe a trade union as a legal entity and provide through an empirical approach a closer look at the social reality surrounding a trade union. This thesis also analyses the impact of the social reality on the trade union and, on the contrary, consequences of the trade union behaviour, which can directly influence the social mood. The thesis also examines the current position of the trade union from its rich historical context. That is the main reason, why this thesis contains a very detailed overview of the historical fight for good working conditions in the Czech territory. I personally consider this part as very important, as good working conditions are main indicator of willingness to unionize into a trade or a labour union. The thesis likewise focuses on the description of the current legal regulation of a trade union competence at an employer. It is important for better understanding functionary work, which is not only about collective bargaining. The trade union topic is very actual due to the recent recodification of private law and the emerged issue of new classification model of legal entities. The issue is very often subject to doctrine and judicial decisions (especially in case of a trade union). Generally speaking, we can say that not all subjects...

Adult Literacy in Tennessee: An Analysis by Gender, Age, and RaceKeesler, Amy R 01 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to investigate the state of adult literacy in Tennessee. The field of adult education underwent a transition as the testing procedure and the test changed to correlate with the induction of the Common Core standards in public schools. Adult students face many barriers to overcome to be successful. The research questions posed guided the analysis of demographic data on student who completed the GED prior to the changes.
Data were provided from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development database. The demographics and scores included those of adults who had passed the GED test from 2008 through 2013. A series of 2-way chi square analysis were used to examine pass rates using the characteristics of race and ethnicity, gender, and age. A sample of 2,000 was randomly selected from a population of 60,000.
The data showed that in the state of Tennessee there are significantly more males than females who pass the test each year. Although all ethnicities are permissible to take the GED, more Caucasians and African Americans take and pass the test in this state. Takers of the GED in the state of Tennessee are to identify their age while completing the exam. The majority of adults taking the GED from 2008 through 2013 were in the age group of 19 to 24.
Many test takers only need to attempt to pass the test the first time. Out of 2,000 randomly sampled males and females, the data showed that a higher proportion of males than females pass the test in the first attempt. There was no significant difference between the randomly sampled age groups on number of attempts. The data did indicate that Caucasian testing candidates pass the GED significantly more often on the first try than African American candidates.

Teacher Perceptions of Indigenous Representations in History: A Phenomenological StudyTipton, Joshua C 01 May 2017 (has links)
This qualitative study addresses teacher perceptions of indigenous peoples representation in United States history. This phenomenological study was conducted within a school district in East Tennessee. For the purpose of this study, teacher perceptions of indigenous representations in history were defined as teacher beliefs towards the inclusion and representation of indigenous peoples in United States history. To gather data, both one-on-one and focus group interviews were conducted from a purposeful sample of United States history teachers from the high schools in the school district. Through an analysis of data derived from interviews and qualitative documents the researcher was able to identify themes such as systemic challenges to multiculturalism within state course standards and textbooks, teachers’ perceived self-efficacy in teaching their students using indigenous perspectives, and the perpetuation of indigenous stereotypes. Furthermore, the qualitative data derived from the study reveals that U.S. history courses in the district perpetuate both the notion of indigenous peoples as historical bystanders and the racial stereotypes of Native Americans. Findings from this study will be useful in evaluating both teacher training and instructional practice in regard to indigenous representations in history.

Using Text Sets to Incorporate Social Justice and Globalization in the Literacy ClassroomMoran, Renee Rice, Billen, Monica, Keith, Karin J. 19 July 2015 (has links)
With Common Core State Curriculum, surface level comprehension of a text will no longer suffice. Attendees of this session will acquire information about how to use text sets and children's literature to expose students to social justice and globalization and encourage critical thinking about the issues in a text. Several practical strategies will be provided which support social justice education as well as digging deeply into a text and citing evidence. These strategies include: implementing a book pass for multiple exposure to text, taking on multiple perspectives when reading a text, book clubs focused on critical thinking, and moving from a localized to a global perspective.

Understanding and Predicting Activist Intentions: An Extension of the Theory of Planned BehaviorJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: Despite the societal importance of activism, the understanding of activist intentions remained limited (Liebert, Leve, & Hu, 2011; Klar & Kasser, 2009). The current study used the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) to examine two structural models of low-risk activist intentions and high-risk activist intentions (Ajzen, 1991). The traditional TPB model was tested against a hybrid commitment model that also assessed past activist behaviors and activist identity. Participants (N = 383) were recruited through social media, professional list-serves, and word of mouth. Results indicated a good model fit for both the traditional TPB model (CFI = .98; RMSEA = .05; SRMR = .03; χ2(120) = 3760.62, p < .01) and the commitment model (CFI = .97; RMSEA = .05; SRMR = .04; χ2(325) = 7848.07, p < .01). The commitment model accounted for notably more variance in both low-risk activist intentions (78.9% in comparison to 26.5% for the traditional TPB model) and high-risk activist intentions (58.9% in comparison to 11.2% for the traditional TPB model). Despite this, the traditional TPB model was deemed the better model as the higher variance explained in the commitment model was almost entirely due to the inclusion of past low-risk activist behaviors and past high-risk activist behaviors. A post-hoc analysis that incorporated sexual orientation and religious affiliation as covariates into the traditional model also led to a good-fitting model (CFI = .98; RMSEA = .04; SRMR = .04; χ2(127) = 217.18, p < .01) and accounted for increased variance in low-risk activist intentions (29.7%) and high-risk activist intentions (18.7%) compared to the traditional model. The merits of each of the structural models and the practical implications for practice and research were discussed / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Counseling Psychology 2019

The Experiences of Black Mothers With Incarcrated Children: With a Focus on Their SonsJanuary 2019 (has links)
abstract: The thesis for this study is that structural racism within the U.S. criminal system causes Black mothers to assume the emotional work of caring for incarcerated sons. This project was designed using an interpretive approach that employed a combination of qualitative and auto-ethnographic methods, drawing on grounded theory principle. Six interviews were conducted with mothers in order to gain in-depth insight into their lived experiences. An auto-ethnographic method was used to analyze the author’s own personal experiences as a family member of the incarcerated in dialogue with the experiences of the broader research population. Studies on the key finding of the psycho-social impacts on mothers with incarcerated sons have explored the relationship between the mental depression of mothers and their son’s incarceration. They have found that financial challenges, dwindling social connections, lousy parenting evaluations, as well as the burden of care of the grandchildren of the incarcerated sons are some of the mediating factors of this relationship. A second key finding also showed that incarceration have had social-economic effects on the prisoner’s families. These families experience extreme financial hardship as a result of incarcerated loved ones. Another finding showed the unique coping strategies for mothers included assuming care taking responsibility, maintaining family relationships, and budget control. Finally, this study found that there are challenges to re-entry experienced by mothers with incarcerated sons when their released. Research findings and original contribution to scholarly knowledge uncovered that Black mothers of the incarcerated in addition to working the Second Shift, are experiencing the phenomena of what is coined to be the “Third Shift.” / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Social Justice and Human Rights 2019
