Bioculturalism, simulation and satire : the case of S1mOneKrajewska, Anna Urszula 03 1900 (has links)
Text in English / This study offers a close look at Andrew Niccol’s (b 1964) satirical film S1mOne from a biocultural perspective emphasising the technological simulation of a Hollywood celebrity and the farce ensuing from her creation. The film is based on Niccol’s assumption that the hypertrophied culture into which he places his cultural object will be one in which human traits of sociality will be well advanced and the highly demanding genre of satire will be entertaining, persuasive, and on occasion punitive in its ridicule of Hollywood.
The study makes a contribution to the idea that a cultural object/text operates as a rapid mechanism for propagating cognition — it shows how Niccol has adapted to less than optimal conditions in his world of Hollywood — in this case he parodies the role of the director of Hollywood films in the figure of Taransky. Cognition is understood as that series of mental processes which include attention, memory, learning (from mimicry as well as other forms), problem solving, ratiocination, and making decisions. Niccol relies on his audience's embodied capacities and skills of recognition, thinking, feeling, remembering, and accounting for his message to be understood. Niccol’s technical skill in editing his narrative to emphasise the satire of the narrative of Taransky and Simone is a critical part of the film’s success. Interpersonal and social propagation of cognition is achieved through reference to other cultural artefacts recalling a variety of similar ideas used in film and other visual creations. The cultural significance of the simulacrum, Simone, is that she is a vehicle for and a form of socially propagated cognition.
The powerful imagistic impression of film helps to structure internalised cognitive artefacts in the viewers who are expected to reflect on their habits of viewing and thinking. When a film, artwork, poem or novel is analysed, then such a cultural object becomes a vehicle of and for propagating cognition. / Art History, Visual Arts and Musicology / D. Litt. et Phil. The monographic thesis mainly solves poetry and prose of Josef Mach, the Czech writer, journalist and clerk. It watches literary progress of his poetics according to the era context, influenc of places, historical and social events and inspirations of other artists who surrounded him. The work look into the texts and lyrics by a diachronic and synchronic way. The section about his original works is followed by a chapter about translations of several novels, because he acted even on this literary field. Then the general outline of the reception of Mach's personality and works since the time of his life until today. The whole thesis is introduced by Mach's biography to which it returns in many topics because his works have an empiric character and it is closely connected to the life. The object of the thesis is to sum information about all these topics and give it as a base for future expert research.

The aim of the thesis is to confront predominantly Celtic nations depicted in the comic series about Aste rix by René Goscinny and Albert Uderz with information derived from literary as well as archaeological sources and consequently to describe current stereotypes and political and social events appearing in the series. Since its origin, Asterix series has become a world phenomenon with readers across both the social and age spectrum. Numerous allusions to the recent past, which the authors decided to humorously comment on through their cartoon characters, can be found in the series. However, each of the stories takes place in the historical background of the times around the year 50 BC, and it seems interesting to observe to what extent Uderzo and Goscinny stick to the sources and when their fantasy takes over. El epistolario de Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz en el contexto literario-discursivo novohispanoCamarena Castellanos, Ricardo January 2017 (has links)
This thesis addresses the epistolary work by Novo-Hispanic writer Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz to place it in the literary and discursive context of the end of the 17th Century. I will take as theoretical background the concepts of dialogism and the carnivalesque by Mikhail Bakhtin, as well as Michel De Certeau’s reflections on what he calls the practice of everyday life. Other aspects of my theoretical approach will be drawn from Michel Foucault’s concepts in The Archaeology of Knowledge; his ideas about power, knowledge and social control, which will be useful for contextually addressing Sor Juana’s work and that of her intellectual contemporaries. Particularly, I will analyse the circumstances in which these Novo-Hispanic discourses were produced. This contextualization will allow me to incorporate not only the cultural (everyday life) practices that surround the production of these texts, but also other less notable or unpublished documents written by some of Sor Juana’s contemporaries. My aim is to widen the discursive spectrum of authors and critics of the prose of this author, and to this end I make use of documents from the 17th Century as primary source.
This thesis is divided into three chapters. In the first, I will place into context the Novo-Hispanic discourse and the generic forms of the time: sermon, satire, libel, letter and inquisitorial censure, and the function of ideological control exerted by the Novo-Hispanic Holy Office. In the second chapter I will make a textual and contextual revision of three epistolary documents by Sor Juana: Carta al Padre Nuñez (Letter to Father Nuñez, 1682), Carta Atenagórica (Letter Worthy of Athena, 1690) and Respuesta a Sor Filotea de la Cruz (Reply to Sor Filotea of the Cross, 1690); as well as the antecedents, development and the result of the critical-theological conflict caused by these private letters, their replies and other collateral documents, namely, Carta de Serafina de Cristo, and Carta de Filotea de la Cruz (1690). Both drafts of these letters, found in Puebla in 2010, will also be refered in this revision. In addition to this I will study Defensa del Sermón del Mandato (1691) and Discurso Apologético contra la Fe de Erratas de un Soldado Castellano (1691), documents found in Lima in 2002 and published in Mexico in 2004.
The third chapter consists of the study of three contemporary preachers of Sor Juana: Francisco Xavier Palavicino Villarrasa, Pedro Muñoz de Castro and Pedro de Avendaño Suárez de Sousa, whose theological and literary activities were denounced by the Holy Office. My aim is to show the reach of inquisitorial control and its consequence on the writing and literary activities of the contemporary intellectuals of Sor Juana, to contextualize Sor Juana’s epistolary work and confront the possible isolation and singularization that may place her life and work apart from the kernel of the intellectual scene in the New Spain at the close of the 17th Century.

Los Sueños de Quevedo es una obra satírica que contiene una incisiva crítica social, de la que no escapa la realidad jurídica de la época. Con la ayuda que prestan los puentes metodológicos generados con la combinación de las ciencias literaria y jurídica, en este trabajo de investigación interdisciplinar se analiza el componente jurídico presente de forma dispersa en esta narración ficcional de naturaleza satírica, estudiando su contenido y forma de presentación en base a la clasificación que se propone de los elementos de carácter jurídico. Mediante su comparación con fuentes documentales jurídicas de la época y con el filtro que proporciona el pensamiento pluridimensional filosófico y doctrinal del autor, se pretende además una aproximación a las circunstancias histórico-jurídicas de finales del siglo XVI y principios del XVII, así como, a la visión que tiene Quevedo de la misma y la valoración que otorga a la administración de justicia y a la justicia misma, contribuyendo con ello al mejor conocimiento de la obra literaria, de su creador y de la época en la que se escribió. / Sueños by Quevedo is a satirical work that contains an incisive social criticism, from which the legal reality of the time does not escape. This interdisciplinary research analyzes the legal component present in Quevedo’s fictional narrative with help from the methodological bridges built between the literary and legal sciences. In this paper a proposed classification of the legal elements is used as the basis for analysis of Sueños’ content and form. By comparing the results with legal documentary sources of the time and with the filter provided by the author's multidimensional philosophical and doctrinal thought, an approach to the historical-legal circumstances of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries is also reached, as well as, Quevedo's view and assessment of the administration of justice and justice itself in his contemporary society. The analysis contributes to a better understanding of Sueños, its author and the time in which it was written.

Examining Sinophobia and Racialization at the Nexus of News Satire and Public Engagement : The Case of Swedish Television SVT’s Svenska Nyheter News Satire of China in 2018Huang, Nini January 2022 (has links)
This thesis aims to understand Sinophobia in the context of post-racial, anti-racist and color-blind Sweden, specifically concerning news representations of China and racial caricatures of Chinese and other East-Asians through “Gook humor”. Sinophobia is examined through race humor and public engagement with satirical race representations using the controversial case of news satire of China produced by Swedish public television SVT in 2018. A reflexive thematic analysis is conducted to analyze the news satire as transcripts from a YouTube video, and public engagement as relevant YouTube comments in Swedish. The findings of the analysis are situated within a critical race theoretical framework based on the concept of liquid racism, color-blindness, Yellow Peril narratives and critical humor theories. The result shows that the news satire contains liquid race representations of Chinese as ironic yet exaggerated racial caricatures, while portraying China as a powerful yet threatening authoritarian state, alluding to Yellow Peril narratives. Mediated through humor, these representations implicitly promote liquid racism in public engagement, in which racist interpretations could exist in the context of white liberal anti-racism. This paper coins the term liquid Sinophobia to describe how covert racism has adapted to exist in post-racial and color- blind Sweden by primarily negating accusations of racism by Swedish-Chinese minorities. Explicit Sinophobia was also found in the public engagement rooted in cultural racism, nationalism and counter-PC culture. This thesis has major implication for Sinophobia research in Asian critical race studies in Sweden, being the first of its kind to focus on this topic at the nexus of news satire and public engagement. Further research is required to study liquid Sinophobia and anti-Asian racism based on the general and intersectional experiences of Swedish-Asian communities.
