Reading, Writing, Relationships: The Impact of Social Network Sites on Relationships and Well-Being

Burke, Moira 28 December 2011 (has links)
The social web has emerged concurrent with a decline in Americans' community involvement and number of close friendships. Hundreds of millions of people connect online, but they appear to have fewer confidants and trust each other less. However, contrasting research finds that web users have better social integration and stronger relationships than their offline counterparts. This thesis resolves these contradictory views through a detailed examination of social network site (SNS) use and changes in relationships and individual well-being. The research is conducted at multiple levels looking at how different types of SNS use—direct interaction with others and more “passive consumption” of social news—influence the number and quality of individuals’ social ties and their aggregate social capital and well-being, including perceived social support, happiness, and physical health. The studies combine objective measures of SNS use (communication activity from the server logs of a popular social networking site) with self-reports of tie strength and well-being to accurately differentiate types of use with different partners. Longitudinal methods reveal how well-being changes over time with SNS use and are moderated by personal characteristics such as social communication skill and recent job loss.

Missing the present for the unkown : the relationship between fear of missing out (FoMO) and life satisfaction

Jood, Tsholofelo Ella 04 1900 (has links)
Fear of missing out (FoMO) is a type of internet slang used to describe the “pervasive apprehension that others might be having rewarding experiences from which one is absent” (Przybylski, Murayama, DeHaan & Gladwell, 2013, p. 1841). This pervasive fear encompasses an individual’s life and it is exacerbated by the social media updates of online counterparts. A study conducted by a South African pharmaceutical company revealed that 62% of the respondents have a constant fear of missing out on something that might be happening elsewhere. This study underscores the relevance of studying FoMO as a construct in the South African context. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between FoMO and satisfaction with life, as these two constructs have previously shown to be negatively correlated. The self-proclaimed FoMO sufferers who will be partaking in this study will be requested to complete an online questionnaire to establish the nature of the relationship between FoMO and satisfaction with life. / Psychology / M.A. (Clinical Psychology)

Programa minha casa minha vida: uma análise do endividamento e de fatores comportamentais / Minha casa minha vida program: an analysis of indebtedness and behavioral factors

Fraga, Luana dos Santos 17 February 2017 (has links)
This study aimed to identify how the beneficiaries of the “Minha Casa Minha Vida” Program (PMCMV), belonging to the Central-western Mesoregion of Rio Grande do Sul, manage their financial resources, including the payment of PMCMV funding, and how PMCMV, Attitude to Indebtedness, Financial Literacy, Financial Well-Being and Financial Management influence their Satisfaction with Life. For this, were applied 561 questionnaires, analyzed using descriptive statistics, confirmatory factor analysis, mean difference tests and regression analysis. The main results reveal that most of them have good financial habits, however, they have difficulty in saving money, have debts and have already had the name linked to the negative register. Majority of beneficiaries consider reasonable the value of the home financing payment. Among the beneficiaries of Range 1, most have already had or have arrears of the household, unlike those in Range 2 and Range 3. The main reason for default is that the installment money has been used for unexpected expenses (illness, unemployment). Individuals were satisfied with PMCMV, believing that life in general, the relationship with the neighborhood and financial life improved. Time spent with locomotion, the access to public health institutions and collective transportation, social work accomplishment and problems related to violence in the neighborhood are aspects that prevent greater satisfaction. Many have medium-to-high Financial Knowledge, develop good Financial Attitudes in relation to the concern with the financial future and savings, and good behavior regarding control and planning of expenses. They feel an intermediate level of Financial Well-Being and have a positive perception of Satisfaction with Life. The validity of all proposed behavioral constructs was confirmed; however, the scales of Satisfaction with PMCMV, Attitude to Indebtedness and Financial Attitude were quite reduced. It was found that individuals with monthly incomes between R$ 3.275,01 and R$ 5.000,00 have a higher Attitude to Indebtedness. The beneficiaries belonging to Ranges 2 and 3, men, married, with higher levels of schooling, civil servants and with income above R $ 5,000.00 have higher Financial Literacy and Financial Well-being. In relation to Satisfaction with Life, the beneficiaries of Ranges 2 and 3, men, who do not have dependents, over 48, widowed, retired, regular self-employed and public employees, with income above R$ 5.000,00 are the most satisfied. It was identified that the variables: Financial Well-Being, Financial Attitude and possessing a credit carnet exert a positive influence on Satisfaction with Life. However, the Financial Knowledge, having debts and being defaulted in PMCMV have a negative impact. Emphasis is placed on the need for greater investments in transportation and health around housing, and to offer to the beneficiaries an opportunity to learn about the importance of financial control, timely payment and savings, as well as a greater awareness that, once the beneficiaries gained the opportunity to own a house, with low installments, they need to pay the installments on time. More research is proposed on the individuals with potential to be beneficiaries and that have effective payment conditions.

The interplay of wellbeing and meaning of life in the development to old age : a practical-theological study

Marti, Peter (Theologian) 02 1900 (has links)
In Switzerland ageing is not necessarily unproblematic, even in the most favorable conditions. The question to answer is on what conditions in everday life a high level of wellbeing as well as meaning and perspective of life can be attained and preserved. Do professing Christians succeed better than non-religious people? The present study examined the results of current gerontological resarch in this respect, primarily in Switzerland. It attempted to define the terms of wellbeing, meaning of life in connection with religious gerontology with specific criteria and to show up the interaction of their several components. In a qualitative empirical study, according to the Grounded Theory, twelve persons between fifty and eighty years of age with ten different religious/spiritual backgrounds were interviewed with the aid of a semistructured interview guide. The main topics were wellbeing, meaning of life, faith/spirituality and dying/death. The relationship between everyday wellbeing and meaning of life and life perspective proved to be strong. People with a personal relationship with God seemed to have more resources to accept not only their own mortality or to cope with negative events in life, but to recognize their ultimate meaning of life to be in God, which is outside themselves. In consequence they were better able to let go any of their own achievements. This lifestyle requires practise and promotion. On account of the results a number of tasks were formulated to guide the older people in their daily life in practicing this lifestyle. The Christian community seems to be a suitable framework to provide interdisciplinary learning opportunities for the third age in the fields of medicine, psychology, sociology and theology as well as the opportunity of personal counseling. In this way, the never-ending process of maturation of individual elderly people should be encouraged. They are free, according to their talents, to get themselves involved with other people, to have time for them, that is within the Christian community or outside, in society. Thus, the New Testament commandment to love one another can be complied with, and solidarity with others will truly be fact. A stronger sense of meaning and a higher grade of wellbeing will be welcome by-products, which will contribute to a fulfilled life. / Philosophy, Practical and Systematic Theology / D. Th.
