Sector Diversification: Implications for Investors

Ramsey, Isaiah 01 April 2020 (has links)
This thesis examines if the correlations between equity sectors have increased over time, mitigating sector diversification. Investors and other financial enthusiasts have started to believe that sector diversification is not a useful investment strategy. To investigate whether correlations among the sectors are rising, this study analyzes numerous aspects regarding sector diversification. Twenty years of monthly sector returns are used to determine whether correlations among the sectors are increasing. Also, the analyzation of sector movement during up and down periods of the market is addressed within the thesis. This study finds that the majority of the sectors move together in times of a financial crisis, like the 2007-2008 market crash. Thus, when sector diversification is most needed, it often fails during times of strife. Furthermore, the study analyzes how the majority of the sectors tend to not move with the market over the twenty-year period. Results suggest the correlations between the sectors have not become closer contrary to popular belief. The importance and usefulness of sector diversification when investing is validated by this study’s results.

Paredes Casado, Miguel Angel, Villa Castro, José Manuel 27 August 2020 (has links)
Today, more and more people are choosing to rent or buy a home. Along with this demand, the furniture sector is activated, which is required to equip this new space thanks to the supply of their products. The company Decorec SAC manufactures chairs, furniture and sofas, among other products for the home, which are totally personalized. Currently, it has several disadvantages with the fulfillment of the production program in the established times, which are reflected in late deliveries to the customer, generating penalties and the use of extra resources. This project shows that the improvement proposal model based on the Lean Manufacturing methodology is capable of reversing the current situation. The methodology starts with the VSM (Value Stream Mapping) diagnosis in order to find the bottleneck process of the current situation. To do this, we rely on the timing of each process related to the product under evaluation. With the bottleneck detected and the analysis of the problem, the procedure to be followed to achieve the solution is established. The stages of the improvement proposal are defined by: Selection of new raw material supplier, Training in Lean Manufacturing, Line Balance, Application of 5s System, Andon Implementation, Poka Yoke Implementation, Implementation of Order Prioritization and Optimization of Raw Material Use. The methodology was validated in a simulation using Arena Software. And thanks to the results, it was possible to verify important savings in time, costs and decreases in late shipments to customers, in addition to achieving the implementation of good practices in the management of business processes.

For the present a proposal for process improvement for Corporation ZAMTSU S.R.L., which is a company dedicated to trade industrial measurement tools for mining, energy and oil sector. An Analysis of Energy Intensities in the Manufacturing and Service Sectors in Canada

Robertson, Heather 04 1900 (has links)

With fluctuations in energy price and the uncertainty of energy supply, particularly in the past decade, it has become increasingly important to forecast energy requirements. It is useful to know the response of energy demand to changes in both energy price and supply. In addition, the amount of substitution possibilities would allow forecasting demand for individual energy types.

This study focuses on changes in energy intensities in the manufacturing and service sectors from 1962 to 1982. Trends for the sectors as a whole, and individual industries within each sector are analyzed on the basis of significant changes in; total consumption patterns and specific energy types. These trends are helpful in acting as a base for analyzing future energy needs in Canada.
/ Thesis / Bachelor of Arts (BA)

Empirical analysis of disk sector prefixes for digital forensics

Necaise, Nathan Joseph 05 May 2007 (has links)
Forensic analysis on a media with fragmented and deleted files is a difficult task. There is a lack of tools and techniques that can accurately and quickly detect fragmented suspect files. Fragmented file data that resides in slack space is often overlooked by digital forensic tools. This thesis proposes to use a prefix signature of 4, 8, 16, or 32 bytes instead of either a complete sector comparison or a hash of the complete sector. The experiments show that the 32 byte has as much discrimination as an MD5 or SHA hash in uniquely identifying a sector. It is shown that the false positive rate does not exceed 10% for prefix signature sizes of 32, 16, and 8 bytes. Also the difference in false positive rates for the 32 and 16 byte prefixes does not exceed 25% as compared to MD5 and SHA hashes.

A situational analysis of the informal sector in the three major cities Blantyre, Lilongwe & Mzuzu) of Malawi

Madziakapita, Sevenia Victor Peter 11 1900 (has links)
This study focuses on the situational analysis of the informal sector in the three major cities in Malawi. An extensive literature study was undertaken to understand the origin of the informal sector and how it has grown in the business environment to which it is exposed in Malawi. This understanding was essential because it formed the basis for conducting the whole research. A sample of four respondent groups, namely government officials, industry representatives, the shop owners and the informal sector participants themselves was drawn, and personal interviews conducted. The purpose of the interviews of the first three respondent groups was to discover their perception of the informal sector in Malawi. This perception was vital for it was clear that these groups influenced government policies much more than the populace. The informal sector participants themselves were interviewed to learn how the informal sector operated, its scope and benefits, why it was growing and how successful it was in the three major cities of Malawi. The results show that there were mixed feelings among the people in each of the four respondent groups. Although many of the government officials were positive, mainly because the President of Malawi and other politicians promote the informal sector publicly, they still believe there is a need to control the sector's operations. The industries and shops that benefit from the informal sector are positive while the others are not. More than 80 percent of the informal sector participants are making a comfortable livelihood through their activities. The lack of employment and the desire to survive were found to be the two issues that enhance the growth of the informal sector in Malawi. The participants could further expand their activities if suitable loans were made available. A coordinating organization within this sector has emerged and is controlling the sector's activities. However, further research is required into the size and contribution of this sector to Malawi's economy. / Development Studies / D. Litt. et Phil. (Development Studies)
