A case study on how an e-tailer can use a multiple criteria ABC analysis to identify risk in the selection of suppliers

Strand, Joel, Strandänger, Louise January 2016 (has links)
Purpose – The purpose of this master thesis is to explore how an e-tailer selling bulky items can use a multiple criteria ABC analysis to make its purchasing process more effective, while balancing richness and reach, with the performance measurements of profitability, total asset turnover and inventory turnover. The purpose will be accomplished through a single case study on an e-tailer active on the Swedish furniture and home furnishing market. Methodology – This thesis applies a multiple criteria ABC-analysis to a single case study. The approach is semi-deductive as theory is combined with interviews on how to match and adapt theory about inventory control and purchasing with the specific requirements of an e-tailer selling bulky items. Findings – This thesis has resulted in a set of recommendations that aim to make the purchasing process of an e-tailer more effective. That is, capital and inventory space will be better allocated to the e-tailer’s more profitable items. Among other things, this thesis shows how dead articles can be identified and how a purchaser can prioritize more profitable articles over less profitable ones when making procurement decisions. The other recommendations are for the e-tailer to investigate the possibilities of decoupling the supply chain by keeping stock at the suppliers’ premises, to match the supplier reliability with their importance in the supply chain, and lastly to explore possibilities of drop shipment. Further, the main finding is that a comparison between the A-, B-, and C-classes and the reliability of the suppliers, highlights a gap and a possible risk. Put differently, the importance of a specific item for the business should be reflected in the choice of supplier and the multiple criteria ABC analysis is the tool to illustrate the importance.

Bolsöy, Alfred, Thelin, Marcus, Håkansson, Nils January 2018 (has links)
Most producing companies aim to reduce tied up capital, which is meant to increase inventory turnover. In this study, an EMS (Electronic manufacturing service) -company, a contract manufacturer, will be studied. The company does not own the products themselves, but is a service company that manufactures to customers. The business has a problem that existed for a long period of time, they have a low inventory turnover among their component inventory. The company therefore wants to increase its inventory turnover in order to reduce its tied-up capital. The aim is to develop knowledge about supplier and customer relationships that affect the stock turnover rate in component stocks. In order to make calculations, it is profitable for the company to order materials multiple times for increased inventory turnover or fewer times to keep down the order cost. Case study is based on qualitative data in the form of interviews and observations. A large part of this study is also based on quantitative data from the company's MRP (material requirements planning) system. The literature is based on articles that deals with key concepts such as EOQ (economic order quantity), customer and supplier relationships. The conclusion of this study suggests that the company should use EOQ to reduce overall order cost while reducing the tied-up capital.

Artikelklassificering som en förutsättning för operativ lagerstyrning : En fallstudie om förbättringsmöjlighet på Alutrade / Product classification as basis for operational inventory management : A case study onimprovement opportunities at Alutrade

Olsson, Anton, Jönsson, Maja January 2023 (has links)
Background: Inventory control is a complex challenge that affects various activities on howinventory is controlled and managed. The management of inventory has a major impact on acompany's profitability and needs to be handled in different ways depending on the situationthe company is operating in. In order to improve operational inventory management forcompanies that have customer-unique products, high inventory availability and the desire forincreased inventory turnover rate, different aspects need to be addressed. Different items in acompany's assortment have different properties, and in order to control items in a goodassortment, a differentiation of the control can be developed. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to find a way to improve Alutrade's operationalinventory control and theoretically contribute with an analysis of which classification basescompanies in a similar situation should analyse when a model for differentiated control isdeveloped. The study aims to differentiate different operational models to adapt to differentitem characteristics to achieve an increased inventory turnover rate. Method: This study is treated with a deductive approach and contains both a qualitative andquantitative research method. The empirical data collected during the study consists ofinterviews, observations, focus groups and excel documents from the company's businesssystem Jeeves for calculations. The data is collected through unstructured and semi-structuredinterviews and observations. Results: By analysing Alutrade's situation, various problems could be identified in theircurrent work regarding operational inventory control. To remedy these problems, differentclassification bases for a differentiated control were analysed. This is to develop a model thatcan provide the opportunity to increase the stock turnover rate based on Alutrade'sconditions. A classification of articles is presented and gives the opportunity to applydifferent operational layer certification methods to the 9 different categories. The differentiated control handles, among other things, methods for service level, crew pointsystem, EOQ and gives recommendations for how they should be applied for each category.Through this, Alutrade can work to increase its inventory turnover rate and prioritize itsefforts where they make the most sense. Through the application of relevant classificationbases, a framework for differentiated control can be developed and different operationalinventory control methods can then be adapted for each category and provide an increase inthe inventory turnover rate.
