Amongst Kiwis and Swedes: Developing an intercultural competence with young learners through written telecollaborationIngelsson, Jennie, Linder, Anna January 2018 (has links)
This study investigates the intercultural development with young learners from Sweden and New Zealand, when using written telecollaboration as a tool. Telecollaboration; is a tool used for online collaboration, it provides for a possibility of connecting students from across the globe and can function as a supplement to traditional teaching. The exchange, took place over a couple of months, connecting two remote and quite unknown corners of the world, from the students’ perspective. Students shared cultural topics with their peers through the course of two emails each, as well as, creating an overall multimodal presentation of their school. The telecollaborative exchange was done in the quest to develop the students social and self-awareness regarding culture through authentic meetings. The data collected is in the form of mind-maps, multi-choice surveys and unstructured observations. Visible themes, found during the project, is unpacked and analysed in accordance with Byram’s (1997) theoretical model of ICC. These themes are also compared with findings of previous research on telecollaboration in educational settings. The results of the study revealed that a development of the young learners’ intercultural understanding was partially achieved. Furthermore, implications met, was the limitation of time as well as the range of technology available.

How Self-Awareness, Motivation, and Empathy are Embedded and Modeled in Community College Preservice Early Educator Online CoursesCarter, Tracey Bennett 01 January 2017 (has links)
Researchers have determined that early childhood (EC) educators need to have personal and social skills and competencies to address the emotional demands of the EC profession. Research is lacking regarding how preservice programs help prepare students emotionally for the EC profession and on whether online courses are a suitable environment for future EC teachers to learn these skills. The purpose of this study was to explore if and how personal and social emotional intelligence (EI) competencies were being embedded and modeled in community college preservice EC educator online courses. This qualitative multiple case study design was employed using a conceptual framework based on Goleman's EI theory and included 3 community college preservice EC faculty member participants. Research questions targeted self-awareness, motivation, and empathy competencies and data sources included faculty interviews, syllabi, assignment descriptions, asynchronous discussion forum prompts, and faculty feedback on student assignments. Data analysis included using values coding and the identification of relevant themes as related to Goleman's EI theory. Results indicated that while faculty perceived EI as important and that they modeled competencies in online discussions and feedback, there were not many embedded activities in the online courses that provided practice or helped to show growth in EI competencies. This study contributes to positive social change for EC faculty by acting as an impetus for the intentional incorporation of EI activities in online environments, leading possibly to better prepared EC teachers and therefore improved teacher quality of life and teacher retention.

Analysis and Definition of the BAT-ME (BATonomous Moon cave Explorer) Mission / Analys och bestämning av BAT-ME (BATonomous Moon cave Explorer) missionenMuresan, Alexandru Camil January 2019 (has links)
Humanity has always wanted to explore the world we live in and answer different questions about our universe. After the International Space Station will end its service one possible next step could be a Moon Outpost: a convenient location for research, astronaut training and technological development that would enable long-duration space. This location can be inside one of the presumed lava tubes that should be present under the surface but would first need to be inspected, possibly by machine capable of capturing and relaying a map to a team on Earth. In this report the past and future Moon base missions will be summarized considering feasible outpost scenarios from the space companies or agencies. and their prospected manned budget. Potential mission profiles, objectives, requirements and constrains of the BATonomous Moon cave Explorer (BAT-ME) mission will be discussed and defined. Vehicle and mission concept will be addressed, comparing and presenting possible propulsion or locomotion approaches inside the lava tube. The Inkonova “Batonomous™” system is capable of providing Simultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM), relay the created maps, with the possibility to easily integrate the system on any kind of vehicle that would function in a real-life scenario.Although the system is not fully developed, it will be assessed from a technical perspective, and proper changes for a viable system transition for the space-Moon environment will be devised. The transition of the system from the Batonomous™ state to the BAT-ME required state will be presented from the requirement, hardware, software, electrical and operational point of view. The mission will be devised into operational phases, with key goals in mind. Two different vehicles will be presented and designed on a high engineering level. A risk analysis and management system will be made to understand the possible negative outcomes of different parts failure on the mission outcome.

Exploring Hybridity in the 21st Century: The Working Lives of South Asian Ethnic Minorities from a British Born Generation in Bradford.Rifet, Saima January 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the working lives of British Born South Asian Ethnic
Minorities (BB SAEMs), critiquing the homogenous identities ascribed to them in
previous research. Its methodology is life-story interviews analysed using Nvivo.
This identified four hybrid categories emerging from two cultures. I fitted myself
neatly into just one. However the reflexive analysis required in good qualitative
research led me to realise that I fitted into not one, but all four categories, and
into others not yet recognised. At this point, my thesis had to take a new turn.
An auto-ethnographic, moment-by-moment study led to an ‘unhybrid
categorisation of hybridities’ acknowledging ‘fuzziness and mélange, cut ‘n’ mix,
and criss and crossover’ where identity is a complex-mix, always in flux. I
conclude not only with this new theory of identity formation in the working lives
of BB SAEMs, but also by arguing that by imposing the requirement to
categorise, research methods lead to over-simplification and misunderstanding. / University of Bradford

How are you feeling now? : A self-awareness service to enhance emotional intelligenceSHIN, HYUNJIN January 2023 (has links)
Emotions play a critical role within the workplace, impacting employees' well-being, motivation, productivity, colleague relationships, and overall workplace culture. As a designer, my objective was to address emotional issues in the workplace by developing a tool capable of recognizing and effectively managing emotions. Through a comprehensive research process involving workshops, interviews, and surveys with employees, I identified self-awareness as a fundamental and essential aspect in addressing emotional issues within organisations. Building upon these findings, I created a design tool named "How are you feeling now?" which prompts employees to reflect upon their emotions while providing resources for their effective management. This service incorporates features such as emotion recording and the presentation of emotion history, facilitating users' self-reflection on their emotional states. I dedicated efforts to visually represent the various elements associated with emotions in this tool, aiming to enable individuals to scrutinise their emotions with greater attentiveness and depth. It is my intention that this visualisation process captivates users' interest and encourages them to momentarily embrace and acknowledge their emotions. Furthermore, by visually displaying the historical record of emotions, my goal is to assist employees in understanding that emotions constitute an ongoing accumulation of valuable data. Ultimately, I aspire for this heightened self-awareness to yield positive behavioural transformations by enabling individuals to regulate and transform their emotions effectively.

There is probably a first aid kit in every household, containing band-aids and similar items, available in case of minor accidents. If you were to cut your finger, you could use the kit and patch yourself up, or if you were to catch a cold, there would be Ne-zeril to facilitate nasal airflow. But what do you find in the kit for a ”mental cold”? This work aims to explore how graphic design can play a role in increasing personal engagement to maintain mental well-being and prevent deeper depressions. The re-sult of this investigation is the concept NUNC, a mental first aid kit. The content of the box is intended to encourage people to reflect on their presence, become awa-re of their choices, discover and break negative thought patterns, and boost their self-compassion.
