The role of religiosity and ad skepticism on the perception of sexually offensive advertising

Sugiarto, Catur 16 May 2018 (has links)
This doctoral thesis aims to understand the role of religion and advertising skepticism in shaping consumers’ perspective and behavior regarding sexually appealing advertising. The first qualitative study explores the ethical and cultural issues regarding sexually appealing advertising with 22 semi-structured interviews among Indonesian consumers. Results show that sexually appealing advertising is perceived as deceptive and irritating and that ad skepticism is a frequent response to the excessive use of sexual content in ads. The second qualitative study is a netnography which aims to better understand the characteristics of skepticism toward sexually appealing ads and identify its consequences on consumers’ attitude and behavior. Results show that consumers have the capability to judge the motive behind the use of sexual content created by the marketer that we identified as the symptom of the ad skepticism. Finally, the quantitative study was performed with a quasi-experiment method in order to investigate the role of skepticism toward sexually appealing advertising, religiosity, and advertising executions on consumers’ ad reactions and brand consequence. 1024 responses from Indonesian samples were collected through web-based questionnaires. The skeptics not only express the negative attitude toward the ads, they are also less interested in the brand being advertised. Results also suggest that religiosity influence the effect of ad-execution construct (i.e. ad congruity) on perceived ad irritation, attitude toward the ad, and embarrassment.

A lembrança da marca em propagandas com apelo sexual: um estudo em anúncios de mídia impressa com a utilização do eye-tracking / Brand recall in advertising with sex appeal: a research with press advertising using eye-tracking

Fidelis, Bruno Tomaselli 18 September 2015 (has links)
In an attempt to attract visual attention and thus influence the process of fixing the brand in the consumer\'s memory, marketing professionals use, in their ads, content with the presence of sex appeal. Such content suggest, among other forms, the exhibition of nudity (partial or total) of physically attractive models. In this context, this research aims to verify if the presence of sex appeal in advertisements for print media influences brand recall from the perspective of Neuromarketing. The discipline of Neuromarketing can be defined as an area of study that uses clinical analysis tools to better understand physiological reactions of individuals and how such these reactions affect consumer behavior. The tool used in the research was the Eye-Tracking, which consists of a device that captures eye movements and records the points of greatest visual attention. The research was conducted in three stages: initially, were chosen thirty real print media ads and , through a survey with 96 participants, six ads with sex appeal were selected. Then two hundred and one participants watched, for five seconds, six different ads. Of these two hundred participants, 100 of them watched the ads with the presence of sex appeal and the 101 watched ads without the presence of appeal. At this stage, the records of eye movements were captured by the eye-tracking. At the end of the experiment, participants answered a questionnaire that, among other information, mentioned which brands were contained in the ads. The statistical test to prove whether there are differences between the two groups, considering the data collected, was the Mann-Whitney-Wilcoxon test. The results showed that the presence of sex appeal in advertising has no influence in the consumer\'s ability to remember a brand. Under the Neuromarketing vision, the results showed that participants spend more time looking to the sex appeal image comparing with the non sex appeal image. Considering the fixation duration in the brand image, the results presented that there no statistical difference between sex appel and non sex appeal advertising

Generational attitudes towards sexual advertisement : A comparative study between Sweden and South Korea

Johansson, Andreas, Lindmark, Erik January 2021 (has links)
To break through the clutter of advertisements, some advertisers uses sexual appeal as a technique to increase visibility and sales. The purpose of this study is to examine, from a Swedish and South Korean perspective, how the attitude towards sexual appeal in advertising differ between generations. Culture and age has been proven to be factors affecting attitude towards advertisements, and previous research has found that the attitude towards sexual appeal in advertising between Swedish and South Korean university students only differed slightly. To examine the attitudes, data was collected through a questionnaire. The results suggest that the attitudes of each age group are generally rather similar, regardless of culture. Ages 18 to 30 showed most negativity towards sexual appeal in advertisements.

The role of globalization, embarrassment, self-brand connection on attitude towards sex appeal in advertising : the case of Muslim women

Qader, Muhammad Zeeshan 12 February 2014 (has links)
There is a greater emphasis on the need to explore the use of sexual content due to globalization and the resulting standardization of advertising content. In our effort to bridge the gap identified by several prominent academicians and practitioners, we endeavored to examine how Muslim women respond to sex appeal in print advertising. The choice of using print ads in our study was due to it being more frequently used and in a more explicit fashion. Our research takes a mix-method (qualitative and quantitative) approach, allowing us to begin with an exploratory phase (qualitative) to identify themes that are associated with sex appeal in the minds of Muslim women. We started off with in-depth interviews in Morocco, Turkey and UAE, providing us with 100 interviews overall. On this basis we formed a conceptual model with globalization, self-brand connection and embarrassment as the independent variables. Religious conviction served as a moderator in the relationship between globalization and attitude towards the ad. We also looked at how these factors influence purchase intention. We provide all the results from Morocco and UAE which show that both globalization and self-brand connection have a significant positive relationship with attitude towards the ad. While embarrassment was found to have a significant negative relationship with attitude towards an ad with sex appeal. We also found compelling evidence for Muslim women's preference for a European, blonde blue-eyed model over a local Muslim model in sexually suggestive ads. At the end we discuss the possible reasons for our results in the light of existing literature and provide directions for future research.

Petroll, Martin de La Martinière January 2007 (has links)
Advertisement is a very important and the most visible tool of marketing to activate consumer’s perceptions and to persuade their behaviors with appeals. One of those – the sex appeal - is common both, in Brazilian advertising and in discussion done by government and society. But there are few studies about sex appeals effects on Brazilian consumer’s behavior. With that in mind, this thesis tries to cover the gap with an experimental study using undergraduate students from two RS (Brazil) universities. They were asked to answer a repertory after been confronted with some ads showing human bodies in different grades of nudism; the experiment took place in class-rooms. Generally, significant differences were found between the ads related to their effects on consumer attitude toward the ad itself, toward the brand, and toward the advertiser image and ethics judgment. Also differences between male and female consumers were found on their valuation about the ad, the brand and ethics and on their purchase intention; the most favorable ones occurred when exposed to the opposed gender models. Academics and managerial implications, and also limitations and suggestions for future research are discussed in the end of the thesis.

Cultural Differences towards Sexual Advertising : A comparative study between Swedish and South Korean students

Hemmingsson, Sara, Sjöberg, Linnea January 2020 (has links)
This study has investigated whether cultural differences affect how one perceives sexual advertising. The study has focused on Sweden and South Korea, which showed great differences in Hofstede's cultural framework. Sweden, according to Hofstede, is considered to be a feminine country and has low uncertainty avoidance. In contrast to South Korea, which is considered masculine and is one of the most uncertainty avoiding countries in the world. The study examined whether these cultural aspects affect how the consumer perceives sexual advertising. To answer this, data was collected through a questionnaire, with Swedish and South Korean university students as respondents. The results showed that there were differences in how Swedish and South Korean participants experienced sexual advertising, although not as great differences as expected. The South Koreans proved to be more easily upset by the advertising than the Swedes, however, it turned out that no one felt interested in buying the promoted product, regardless of culture.
