O conto em Lima Barreto: oscilação editorial e hibridismo estético / The short story in Lima Barreto: editorial oscillation and aesthetic hybridism

Alexandre Juliete Rosa 30 October 2017 (has links)
This paper intends to make an analysis about Afonso Henriques de Lima Barreto\'s short stories (1881 - 1922) that have been published in many collections. Researches and editors published these collections and some of them were organized by the own author. Through this survey, it was observed that the short stories are on a difficult situation. From a literary criticism point of view, this kind of situation is not been studied as much as it should be. From a editorial perspective, the Lima Barreto\'s short stories have various negligence cases. There is another relevant aspect observed through this survey. There are a lot of Lima Barreto\'s texts in collections about short stories and chronicles and this kind of variation reflects a big problem: the literary criticism has given insufficient attention to the fictional prose work of the author. The method used to develop this research was based on Lima Barreto understanding about the social function of literature, summarized in the activist literature idea. In addition to this, the research was based on the discussions held by the author around issues of literary genre and by the context in which the author produced his work, known as the \"premodernism\". The traditional borders between literary genres are more fluids on Lima Barreto\'s novels. Based on the above, the objective of this paper was to show that this characteristic is also in his short stories, foremost with its hybrids aspects as short story and essay; short story and chronicle; short story and jokes; short story and dialogue. Besides the hybrids aspects, there are the orality issue and a kind of writing based on journalism found on the author\'s short fictional prose. This kind of prose is like an omen of stylistic modernity of Brazilian prose, which would be established on XX century and forward. Although the research identified (even in a poor way) something that could unify the texts made by the author in literary genre that involves stylistic diversity and aesthetic hybridism, there are many issues to solve.

Caminhos da ficção cabo-verdiana produzida por mulheres: Orlanda Amarilis, Ivone Aida e Fátima Bettencourt / Paths of fiction produced by Cape Verdean women: Orlanda Amarilis, Aida Ivone and Fatima Bettencourt

Pedro Manoel Monteiro 10 March 2014 (has links)
The central object of this research is based on Orlanda Amarílis, Ivone Aida and Fátima Bettencourts short story production from the selected corpus, we attempted to identify and understand the choice for constructing characters and narration that define in the collections Cais-do-Sodré té Salamansa, Vidas vividas and Semear em pó, respectively, social representations of gender and characteristics of the Bildung (character formation), based on Cape Verdeans hermeneutics of everyday life both in the archipelago and in the diaspora. On the first chapter we tried to establish a broad theoretical field that could support our inferences, thus applying various concepts that oriented our look at the researched object, such as: in-betweenness, post-colonialism, hermeneutics of everyday life, diaspora, the female Bildungsroman. Then we moved to the historical context at the authors bio-bibliography and in the conformation of the collections with the intention to locate the works for our readers. We began the analysis process, on the first part of the second chapter, investigating the titles of the stories and their representation in the diegesis. On the second part, we researched in more detail the processes of structuring characters, undertaken by the three writers, in order to understand the different modes of apprehension and representation of the universe of Cape Verde, especially the experiences of female submission, resistance and emancipation. The third chapter, which complements the overview of the construction of the characters, will be devoted to examine briefly the action of narrators, which together with the characters reveal the worldviews that the writers want to register in fiction in order to introduce a feminine viewpoint and sometimes feminist literary canon to Cape Verde still predominantly masculine. The fourth chapter is devoted to classifying the findings.

More specifically, it is discussed the importance of taking the linguistic analysis as a standard practice in Portuguese teaching Among the various linguistic aspects to be approached in the classroom, this study considers the factors that contribute to the writing of the text, focusing on the reference process. The proposed research turns therefore to the bond that is established in the texts and the possibility of creating and recreating the facts and to (re) construct meaning through the reference process, which explains how the producer of the text shows the surrounding world, filtered by symbolic (cf. KOCH, ELIAS, 2006). Because of the nature of this work, it was necessary to narrow even more the object of study. Thus, among the elements that enable the (re) construction of discursive (MONDADA, DUBOIS, 2003), we decided to investigate the anaphors, especially the associative anaphor, focusing on the relations of meronymy, metonymy as well as the synonyms. It starts from the assumption that the linguistic approach can contribute to the formation of readers and writer of authentic texts in the classroom, since it occupies an important function in the text and it is responsible to print out the directions to reveal intentions, values and positions that the writer of the text wants to express. To see how this linguistic strategy contributes to the meaning (s) was selected as a corpus of analysis the short story O defunto, by Eça de Queiros. It was considered this genre because it is worked repeatedly in reading classes and represents the language in daily uses. Besides showing socially constructed situations, the short story offers to students the opportunity to experience different cultures and expand the boundaries of their world and encyclopedic knowledge. From this selection, we attempted to assess how the selected associative anaphor show judgments established by the author and guide the interpretation of the text. Supporting this analysis the authors involved in the study of the reference among them Koch (2005a, 2005b, 2008a, 2008b), Koch and Elias (2006), Cavalcante (2005a, 2005b), Cavalcante, Rodrigues and Ciulla ( 2003), Marcuschi (2005, 2007a), Mondada and Dubois (2003) and Apothéloz-Béguelin and Reichler (1995). Also utilized the works dealing with the question of genre (Bakhtin, 1992; MARCUSCHI, 2005, 2007b; DIONÍSIO, AX and Bezerra, 2007), the short story (JOLLA, 1976; BORDINI and AGUIAR, 1993), and specifically tale Lusitanian (MOSES, 1974, 1994).

Pirandello \"novellaro\": da forma à dissolução / Pirandello novellaro: from form to dissolution

Francisco José Saraiva Degani 08 December 2008 (has links)
To study Pirandellos short story is a means not only of understanding the reason why he became one of the most important Italian writers of the twentieth century but also the role we play in the world and life. His short stories, based on ordinary events, make the great mosaic of our lives a piece of news, a love that has broken up or not even started, a gesture, a train whistle; situations that drive his thoughts, where many times we recognize ourselves. Successful play writer and novelist, Pirandello never stopped writing short stories: 251 along all his work life. According to Pirandello, a short story was the intimate, unique place, intended for the existential debates of his characters in the hard times of the beginning of the twentieth century. The short stories, brought together in the project Novelle per un anno, are of great importance to understand the evolution of the authors worries and represent the basis of his thought. The last short stories mainly bring new tools for interpretation to Pirandellos work and show a new, much more disturbing writer, many times not acknowledged by critics. To follow the course of the short-story writer Pirandello or novellaro, as he used to call himself connected with other aspects of his literary life, thought, and the time he described so well, is the focus of this work.

Portrait des "professionals" en tant que narrateurs dans la fiction courte victorienne et édouardienne : les discours de pouvoir des médecins, des hommes d’église et des hommes de loi dans les nouvelles de Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Wilkie Collins et Arthur Conan Doyle / Professionals as narrators in Victorian and Edwardian short fiction : discourse and empowerment : doctors, clergymen and lawyers in the short fiction of Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, Wilkie Collins and Arthur Conan Doyle

Girard, Romain 23 November 2015 (has links)
Members of the middle class, particularly clergymen, doctors, and lawyers occupy a central place in Victorian literature, both as narrators and characters. However, it seems that this prominent place fosters questioning as much as empowerment. This paradoxical position seems to stem from the recurrent appearance of members of the professions in texts within which the principles of truth and meaning are undermined. Therefore, we will show how members of the professions, both as narrators and characters, put forward discursive strategies which allow them to manipulate the notion of truth and to destabilize meaning. In order to do so, we will study predominantly short stories, as this genre was favoured by Victorian writers as the locus of narrative and literary experimentation. Besides, this genre was widely read by Victorian audiences and can be seen as a privileged media for authors to express their doubts and commentaries on contemporary society. We have chosen to study the works of three authors in particular, who played a vital role in the bringing of the middle classes on the forefront of Victorian literary representation. Indeed, we will focus on Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu, the son of a clergyman and a man fascinated by the arcana of theology, Arthur Conan Doyle, a doctor himself, before he became a writer and William Wilkie Collins, who had a passion for science and the transformations its growing influence imposed on Victorian society. What is more, these three writers' active role in the establishment of the most popular Victorian periodicals attests to their vast contribution to the development of Victorian values.

Le genre de la nouvelle en Egypte ; traditions et emprunts au XX e siècle : l'exemple de Naguib Mahfouz / The kind of the short story in Egypt ; traditions and loans in the XX century : the example of Naguib Mahfouz

Abbas, Reina 12 October 2010 (has links)
Our study consists on tracking the history of the arab narrative type, more precisely the arab novel since end of nineteenth century till 1969. First, we start in the first chapter by a litterature and historical reminder of the birth of the narrative type in Egypt. Then, we analyze in the second chapter, through the Mahmoud Taymour introductions, the changes and evolutions that occur on this arab narrative type in the first half of the twentieth century. Finaly, the third chapter is the occasion to illustrate the gain in maturity of the narrative litterature and more specificaly the novel. This illustration is done through Naguib Mahfouz novels where we find a complete drawing of the egyptian and arab society at that time.

Etrangeté du vivant et désarticulation des transmissions immatérielles dans l’œuvre courte de l’auteure néo-zélandaise Keri Hulme / The uncanny and the disruption of cultural heritage in New Zealand writer Keri Hulme's short texts

Caër, Mathilde 20 June 2016 (has links)
First published in 1983, The Bone People, to this day the only novel by New Zealand author with Maori origins Keri Hulme (1947-), had a tremendous impact on its readers. It struck them for its capacity to show, in a unique and poignant way, an image of Aotearoa- New Zealand, its rough nature, its inhabitants and the enriching Maori culture. On the contrary, Hulme's poems and short stories were not read with the same enthusiasm and have been the subject of very few studies. This is the reason why I decided to focus on Hulme’s short texts in this dissertation. These short texts convey the uncanny, which can be defined as a feeling of unease, strangeness and unfamiliarity. What is strange can also be incomprehensible, so that it can be difficult to understand the origin of this feeling of unease. The aim of this study is to better understand and explain the manifestations of the uncanny in Keri Hulme short texts. The first part focuses on the historical, cultural and literary contexts in order to grasp the multiple contemporary identities of New Zealand and to show Hulme's literary affiliation. In the second part, I study the links between humans, nature and the non-human in what I call Hulme's ecopoetics. Lastly, I focus in the third part on the representation of haunting and the impossibility to pass on the cultural heritage. I study how the author uses and challenges the characteristics of the short story, shaping its malleable form to express New Zealand wounds. I also intend to demonstrate that Hulme's writings contain the fantastic, which invites the reader to accept what cannot be explained and realize that being in-between two cultures – maori and anglo-saxon – allows to better understand two belief systems that come together and enrich each other.

L'événement dans la nouvelle contemporaine (domaines américain, français, italien) / L'evento nel racconto contemporaneo (ambiti americano, francese, italiano) / The event in the contemporary short story (France, Italy, United States)

Colin, Claire 28 November 2013 (has links)
This thesis sets out to study the notion of event in the contemporary short story, through a corpus of american, french and italian collections, published between 1980 and 2007. Usually defined as a breakdown, which leads an ontological upheaval for the subject who distressed it, the event has another representation in the short stories studied in this corpus. It puts an epistemological reflection about the contemporary literature, between awareness of a world marked by a gap and will of continuing to tell in any case, but with other modes. This reflection is particularly evident in the short story. Our collections show every time what seems to be an impoverishment. Indeed, the event distresses a « digging » : its impact is softened, it doesn’t lead changes in the character’s conscience. Similarly, our texts show a withdrawal of the author and the narrator, which prevents an unequivocal signification and an explicit moral. Finally, these stories frequently tell about a material malfunctionning, that also concerns the story itself. But everytime, these lacks are in fact the possibility of a renewal. The « digging » gives the opportunity to offer another story where the sensational is put at a distance ; the withdrawal allows to the reader to have with the text a posture which isn’t an absolute control ; the malfunctionning isn’t the beginning of a new suspicion’s age, but a will to emphasize narrative potential. By this way, the contemporary short story and the related event show a tension between loss and renewal.

Doppelgänger ve španělské povídkové tvorbě / Doppelgänger in spanish short stories

Kroupová, Alžběta January 2017 (has links)
(in English) The topic of this master thesis is a character of the double in Spanish short stories focused on 20th century. Firstly, we describe the historical context of this literary theme and we observe its changing through the time, its transition from a tragic tone to absurdity or a comic tone. The aim of this work is to observe Freud's concept of "unheimlich" feeling applied to the topic of the double and to investigate what literary tools can intensify this feeling in the reader. After this, we focus on repeating motives in selected short stories and we contemplate constituent aspects of this topic in the context of humanities.
