Automated Learning and Decision : Making of a Smart Home System

Karlsson, Daniel, Lindström, Alex January 2018 (has links)
Smart homes are custom-fitted systems for users to manage their home environments. Smart homes consist of devices which has the possibility to communicate between each other. In a smart home system, the communication is used by a central control unit to manage the environment and the devices in it. Setting up a smart home today involves a lot of manual customizations to make it function as the user wishes. What smart homes lack is the possibility to learn from users behaviour and habits in order to provide a customized environment for the user autonomously. The purpose of this thesis is to examine whether environmental data can be collected and used in a small smart home system to learn about the users behaviour. To collect data and attempt this learning process, a system is set up. The system uses a central control unit for mediation between wireless electrical outlets and sensors. The sensors track motion, light, temperature as well as humidity. The devices and sensors along with user interactions in the environment make up the collected data. Through studying the collected data, the system is able to create rules. These rules are used for the system to make decisions within its environment to suit the users’ needs. The performance of the system varies depending on how the data collection is handled. Results find that collecting data in intervals as well as when an action is made from the user is important. Systemet sparar även användarens beteende i miljön.

Inter-device authentication protocol for the Internet of Things

Wilson, Preethy 18 May 2017 (has links)
The Internet of things (IoT) recently blossomed remarkably and has been transforming the everyday physical entities around us into an ecosystem of information that will enrich our lives in unimaginable ways. Authentication is one of the primary goals of security in the IoT and acts as the main gateway to a secure system which transmits confidential and/or private data. This thesis focuses on a Device-to-Device Mutual Authentication Protocol, designed for the smart home network, which is an essential component of communication in the Internet of Things(IoT). The protocol has been developed based on asymmetric cryptography to authenticate the devices in the network and for the devices to agree on a shared secret session key. In order to ensure the security of a communications session between the devices, the session keys are changed frequently - ideally after every communication session. The proposed scheme has been programmed in HLPSL, simulated and its efficiency verified using the SPAN/ AVISPA tool. When SPAN substantiates the protocol simulation and the attacker simulation, the back-ends of the AVISPA tool verifies the safety and security of the proposed authentication protocol. The thesis also evaluates the protocol's security against the attacks successful against protocols proposed by other researchers. / Graduate / 0544 / 0984 / 0537 / pwilson1@uvic.ca

Användbarhet och användarvänlighet av smarta enheter i den egna bostaden hos unga konsumenter / Usefulness and ease of use of smart devices in the private home amongst young consumers

Nurmi, Sarah, Görander, Clara January 2023 (has links)
This thesis is written within the topic of Internet of Things (IoT) and smart homes among young adults in Sweden. Smart homes are taking up more and more space on the housing market and aim to make consumers' everyday lives easier. Factors behind buying a smart home present a gap of knowledge about who the potential buyers are among young adults. The essay is written with the aim of reviewing generation Y and Z’s ownership and regular use of smart home devices in their households in terms of usefulness and ease of use. The aim is also to gain an insight into the willingness of generation Y and Z to buy and pay for a smart home. By using previous research combined with a quantitative study in the form of a web survey, an analysis was formed from the consumers' responses. The result shows that young consumers have a broad knowledge of what IoT means with a majority having at least one smart device in their household. The willingness to buy and pay for smart homes is proving to be varied, with young consumers not yet convinced on the issue. The outcome of the thesis contributes to an interesting discussion about IoT and smart homes from different perspectives and gives you as a reader knowledge about smart home devices and their potential in the housing market.

Investigating the Impact of User Behavior in the Security of Smart Home IoT Devices

Ghunaim, Maha January 2023 (has links)
As technology is growing at a fast pace, IoT-based smart home services are increasingly adopted by people. IoT-based smart homes offer numerous unimaginable benefits, including efficiency, safety, effectiveness, scalability of services, devices, and data, among many others. However, there is another side to this technology: security threats. As IoT-based technology is distributed in nature, implementing security measures and policies to protect the infrastructure becomes very difficult. The infrastructure faces threats such as information theft, eavesdropping, distortion, and more. Ensuring the security of smart home IoT devices is a critical concern, and user behavior plays a major role in achieving it. Furthermore, Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) was utilized throughout the study. This study employed a qualitative research methodology and content analysis technique to investigate the impact of user behavior on the security of smart home IoT devices. The findings revealed several themes, such as the significance of comprehending and resolving security issues, the implementation of security measures, and the impact of user education and awareness. The study offered fresh perspectives on IoT device security and will aid in developing security best practices / I takt med att tekniken växer i snabb takt, anammas IoT-baserade smarta hemtjänster alltmer av människor. Dessutom användes Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB).under hela studien.
