The Impact of Perceived Fairness on Player Playstyle in Multiplayer Card Games

Ovsakova, Lily, Pistek, Radim, Johansson Nielsen, Martin January 2023 (has links)
This research study explores the influence of perceived fairness on players' playstyle in multiplayer card games. The study focuses on a card game called "Insomnia" and its modified versions to investigate players' perceptions of fairness and their subsequent behavior. Two series of playtests were conducted with different groups of participants, and data were collected through gameplay observations and semi-structured group interviews. Thematic analysis was performed on the collected data, comparing findings with existing literature to provide insights into fairness in card games and the consequent playstyles. The results reveal that players adapt their strategies and playstyles when the game becomes difficult and unfair, shifting towards cooperative actions and helping others. Furthermore, the study shows that their goals, motivations, and perceived fairness influence players' preferences and behaviors. The findings underscore the interplay between fairness, playstyle archetypes, and player behavior in multiplayer card games. The study emphasizes the significance of understanding individual motivations, social dynamics, and game design elements in shaping player experiences. It suggests that game designers should consider the complexity of player decision-making and the intricate relationship between motivations and perceptions of fairness to foster engaging gameplay.

Nouvelles dynamiques socioéconomiques crées par l'immigration liée à l'exploitation des ressources naturelles : le cas du Cap Est de Madagascar / New socio-economic dynamics created by immigration linked to the exploitation of natural resources : the case of the Eastern Cape of Madagascar

Zafisoamalala, Claudiana 21 November 2017 (has links)
Poverty in Madagascar has implications in the field of social, economic, political and environmental. Thereby, over the last around twenty years, massive internal immigration has taken place and been observed due to the discovery and exploitation of new natural resources. This phenomenon spread out with reference to, on the one hand, the discovery of certain mining sites (for example Ilakaka in 1998) and, on the other hand, the explosion of the precious wood demand on the international market. On this second point, this thesis focuses on providing relevant information and reflection on immigration in the two rural communes and the city of Antalaha, which is one of the main areas in Madagascar well-known in owning and logging forest of precious wood. Even if the exploitation of precious woods has caused a very large migratory flow, these migrations have not always had the same characteristics over the time. The migratory phenomena observed in the different zones of activity present a wide variety of cases. The main factor bringing them together is the abundance of available resources, though the impact on socio-economical and ecological systems can be quite different from one area to another. Thanks to a research methodology and a field approach combined with a quantitative and qualitative methodological guidance, we will take as central problem of this thesis whether this immigration does or does not bring a local development in the zones of study.

The state and illegal acts on the margins of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Eastern Republic of Uruguay:  a case study on the Sant\'ana do Livramento and Rivera (UY) border towns

Almeida, Leticia Nuñez 06 August 2015 (has links)
This thesis is a study of the relationship between the state and illegal acts on the margins of the Federative Republic of Brazil and the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, having as an empirical object the border towns of Santana do Livramento (BR) and Rivera (UY). This investigation seeks to build a sociological analysis of the border, breaking with the nationalist methodology that involves concepts such as crime, violence and border areas. In order to do that, we propose an analysis of how these states Brazil and Uruguay operate on their borders, through Foucault\'s devices: Sovereignty, Discipline and Government, in order to understand to what extent the practices and discourses approach and distance themselves from this process, in an attempt to evidence other possible borders along country lines, outcomes of the meeting/separation between Sovereignty and Social Dynamics of these countries. Thus, we verify that the borders common customs and economy differentiate tolerances in the management of what is legal and illegal and what is moral and immoral, creating a Border Market, in which state limits are expanded and boundary lines are redesigned by the common life.

When mitigation of xenophobia becomes part of the humanitarian agenda : an examination of the social cohesion strategies in the Venezuelan migration situation

Karlsson, Linnea Lovisa January 2020 (has links)
Xenophobia ‘fear and hatred of strangers’ has become part of the international humanitarian agenda with the increased human mobility due to complex emergencies. Nevertheless, there is a knowledge gap in how to address such a complex social problem. Xenophobia has become evident in Colombia, and the UNHCR has responded with the media campaign ‘Somos Panas Colombia’, with the objective to reduce it and promote solidarity toward Venezuelan migrants. My research objective is to identify the social dynamics between the host communities and migrants in this context; then to understand how the UNHCR campaign can interact with these dynamics. The dynamics are categorized into dividers and connectors, through the Do No Harm approach, and discussed from social psychology perspectives. In this manner, we can distinguish which factors can be strengthened, and which can be weakened through campaign activities. Furthermore, in order to identify the optimal conditions for encouraging positive group interactions, the research employs the framework of the Intergroup Contact theory, which suggests that contact under the conditions of equality, common goals, cooperation and institutional support typically reduces prejudice. Such conditions strengthen a common ingroup identity that could include both Venezuelans and Colombians. This systematic thinking undergirds the analysis to understand how to most effectively reduce intergroup tensions and xenophobia, as well as how not to exacerbate it. My findings are that real structural factors, like pressure on the social service systems, combined with perceptions of these to be threatened, exacerbated by media reporting, divide the communities; whilst common interests and values, highlighted by the civil society and credible opinion leaders who display tolerant and positive relationships with migrants help to connect them. Finally, I conclude that the UNHCR has broadly identified the intergroup dynamics and has the potential of effectively addressing them through the campaign content strategies of sending rational-emotional messages that induce empathy and activates solidary behavior, and the communication strategy of building partnerships to reach target populations in an effective manner.

The Accessories of Stockholm’s UrbanDevelopment : Private property developers’ use of luxury retail to uphold and continuously develop attractive areas

Olson, Philip January 2024 (has links)
Biblioteksgatan-Birger Jarlsgatan-Stureplan, known for its luxurious high density of luxury stores and historical architecture, is an extreme case in the built environment in a Swedish context. This thesis examines how private property developers shape the urban landscape and change dynamics within Stockholm's luxurious shopping district and its surroundings. Luxury brands create attractive urban environments that draw elite businesses and individuals, driving economic growth and urban regeneration. The study explores the role of urban partnerships and identity creation in contemporary city development, emphasising the collaboration between private property developers and public authorities in addressing urban challenges. By clustering luxury retail in prime locations, developers enhance the area's attractive perception, attract affluent residents and tourists, and contribute to the city's competitiveness. The thesis adopts a political-economic perspective, integrating theories from David Harvey, Michael Porter, and Richard Florida to understand the influence of private property developers on urban development. It employs a case study approach, using semi-structured interviews and existing literature to provide comprehensive insights into the strategies and impacts of private property developers in Stockholm. Luxury research is largely missing in a North European context, and this thesis aims to contribute to the research gap.

Séguin-Tremblay, Rachel 08 1900 (has links)
The early adolescent years mark an important drop in physical activity participation. Peers have frequently been identified as important social determinants of physical activity involvement (PAI) during this period of youth’s lives. This study explores the influence of adolescent peers’ social dynamics on perceptions related to PAI. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews which were conducted with 12 to 14 year old boys (n = 12) and girls (n = 10) attending schools of three different locations (urban, suburban and rural), socioeconomic statuses, and ethnic compositions. The interview guide broached topics such as friendship, teasing, emotions and social interactions relating to PAI. The analysis of participants’ accounts focused on the description of social interactions as they relate to physical activity in different settings. On one hand, coeducational school settings appear to promote the emergence of power relationships based on performance norms and to foster negative perceptions associated with physical activity. On the other hand, physical activity conducted outside of school with same sex peers who have similar abilities seem to promote relationships based on equality amongst adolescents and positive perceptions about physical activity. These results may provide guidance for professionals aiming to present youth with social environments which promote PAI.
