Pieterse, Luna 03 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSocialWork)--Stellenbosch University, 2003. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: An exploratory study was conducted to determine the nature and extent of the emotions and emotional experiences of alcoholics and chemically dependent adults. The study was also conducted to explore the theoretical field of music therapy and determine how music can be utilized to social group work with alcoholics and chemically dependent adults. The exploratory study was also conducted to determine how many knowledge social workers have about music therapy, and to what extent they believe it can practically be used in social group work with alcoholics and chemically dependent adults. The researchers' interest in group work and the importance of the use of creative aids during group work is the motivation for this study. The aim of the study is thus to establish guidelines for the use of music in social group work in order to provide effective intervention for alcoholics and chemically dependent adults. The most general personality traits, emotions, defence mechanisms, communication and motivational problems of alcoholics and chemically dependent adults, have been enclosed in the literature study. The corresponding principles, goals and intervention processes of group work and music therapy was also highlighted. Focus was especially placed on the corresponding functions of group work and music namely the handling of defence mechanisms, the exploration and expression of emotions, the improvement of communication, the development of a positive self-esteem, socialisation and the facilitation of personal motivation. The value of group work and music in the addressing of alcoholics' and chemically dependent adults' problems and needs, has been investigated because of the specific corresponding functions of group work and music. The umversum IS social workers at institutions that make use of group work interventions in their treatment programmes for alcoholics and chemically dependent adults. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods was used, namely structured interviews as well as structured questionnaires. The results of this study generally confirmed the findings of the literature study. The recommendations can be divided into three areas namely recommendations concerning policy, programmes and training of social workers, recommendations concerning the corresponding functions of group work and music, and recommendations concerning future research. The importance of further research in the testing of the value of music in group work for specific client groups was especially recommended.

We investigated the social structure and spatial patterns of area usage by a population of bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus, inhabiting the Patos Lagoon estuary and adjacent coastal waters, in southern Brazil. We estimated the association index from 102 individuals regularly sighted in 243 photo-identification surveys carried out between August 2005 and October 2012. Social and network analyses, with the division proposed by modularity, indicated that this bottlenose dolphin population consists of three social units. Although some spatial overlap exists, preferred areas of each unit were distinct. One of the units was strongly associated with the Patos Lagoon estuary while the other two occupied, respectively, the southern and northern adjacent marine coasts. Within unit associations among individuals were predominantly of short duration (fission-fusion dynamics), though a few long-lasting bonds were detected. Although interactions between social units occurred, the associations were brief and occurred only among a few individuals. The segregation of these individuals is motivated, at least in part, by the bonding patterns among individuals and their fidelity to specific areas. It is recommended that the social units be the framework for modeling the intrapopulation dynamic and viability as well as for investigating patterns of gene flow within and between social units.

Circuitos e práticas religiosas nas trajetórias de vida de adultos em situação de rua na cidade de São Paulo / Circuits and religious practices in life trajectories of adult homeless people in city of São Paulo

Debora Galvani 28 April 2015 (has links)
From the study of single life pathways, this research aimed to understand the main dimensions and implications of homeless adults in religious circuits for the construction of interdependence networks. It is a research based on the principles of ethnography, with a field work developed through dialogue and participation, and through interviews focused on life history. So, this study centers in the heterogeneity of social dissociation forms and the religion-based reconfigurations of ways of life paths in the streets and public spaces of the city of São Paulo. Within this heterogeneity, the target are groups and individuals who provided reference for the discussion of endogenous/internal (and self-organization) forms to overcome this condition, through movements opposing disaffiliation and social disqualification. The starting point was stories of people who shared the experience of Ponto de Encontro e Cultura/Metuia-USP (Metuia-USP Gathering and Cultural Point). The analysis was performed in two perspectives: on the one hand, the reconstitution of the interlocutors life history, with the main objective of showing their interdependence networks, focusing on religious participation circuits that transcend the assistance circuits, discussing the peculiarities of the process of construction/reconstruction of identities that re-signify the historicity and experience of homelessness; on the other hand, different rationalities that coexist in the identified religious circuits, or narratives that contribute to analysis and explanations for the homeless who reject secularized conception of reality as the only way to acquire knowledge and life orientation. The interlocutors trajectories allowed to elucidate movements not easily captured by public policy and services, and questioned notions such as family, technical hierarchy and needs policy for attention and care of the homeless. Religion can provide a meaningful and creative language field for the development of life opportunities and choice in which to live in the present with the quality of desire can be as urgent as feeding the body. This study intendeds to contribute to the construction of subsidies in the formulation of actions and life projects of social occupational therapy attention, which can move between the singular and the collective, and to guide the formulation of intervention methodologies that incorporate the cultural expressions of their target audience, as well as provide support to strengthen the notion of culture and cultural diversity as a right incorporated into the progress in implementing the Política Nacional para a População de Rua (National Policy for Homeless People), the implementation of the Sistema Único da Assistência Social (Universal System of Social Assistance) in Brazil, and the Plano Nacional de Cultura (National Culture Plan), recognizing the regional peculiarities and also the singularities of its users, as a way to review notions such as family and realize new ways of continuous connection and reconnection

Glass and contemporary art : the example of the Italian production.- An attempt to contribute to the study of art glass.

Serraille, Guillaume 14 March 2014 (has links)
The identification and definition of the actors of the contemporary Italian glass is complex insofar as their situation is paradoxical: they are both iconic and relatively setback from “free” glass art. This "movement" that took off in the course of the sixties in the United States experimented with both new practices and sculptural forms, as well as smaller and more flexible workshops than the traditional factory. In addition, the Studio Glass Movement’s revolution occurs at the beginnings of postmodernism in which the arts are also changing, making more difficult the study of the relationship between glass crafts and industries with the arts. The first part entitled "Environment and history, the issue of model" is a historical approach in chronological thread. It describes the technical developments of the glass as well as its specific developments in Venice and Murano. It also allows to characterize the different actors: factories and maestri, craftsmen, designers and artists. The second part is devoted to works and artifacts, economic and physical environments. At first, it approach the evolution of various productions (everyday objects, sculptures, etc..) with a typological and stylistic point of view. Their critical reception is studied, as well as their terms of sales from Venice’s souvenir shops to large exhibitions, specialized or not.The third and last part ("Glass ontology: aesthetic principles and metaphysical requirements") deals with the role of craft and tradition of glass in postmodernity. It also concerns the question of the material and its practices with an aesthetical and phenomenological point of view, which refers to the conditions and resources of production.

Le contrat social sénégalais au ras du bitume (1985-2014) : de la formation du groupe professionnel des chauffeurs au renforcement des institutions politiques / The Senegalese social contract on the road level : from the drivers' group formation to the political institution reinforcement

Cissokho, Sidy 01 December 2016 (has links)
This research puts under scrutiny the formation of a social group through the daily work of a set of actors, such as the drivers of public transport, political parties and the administration representatives. It reconsiders the most common explanation on the stability of Senegalese political institutions: the hypothesis of the religious social contract. In my case, the study of the social contract takes place outside the religious contract in the context of post structural adjustment. The research highlights a circular process where political institutions build social groups, which in return reinforce political institutions. Structural adjustment policies have upset the social stratification of the transport world. They have allowed a new type of drivers' social climbing, who own vehicles. Mutual societies that were already in the motor parks have been symbolically invested by new significations. They will henceforth represent the driver profession. During the 1990s, with the help of unionists, the leaders of these organisations have progressively integrated local configurations of actors gathering representatives of political parties and administrations. This has given them additional means to reaffirm the existence of the driver group. Nowadays, this professional group asserts itself through the control of driver's work and the designation of the leaders of the group. On the other side, the existence of the driver group legitimates political institutions by perpetuating the belief that these institutions are above the rest of the society. The driver representatives' brokering practices with political parties and administrations allow us to study how significant these beliefs are.

An exploration of family group conferencing as part of the diversion experience of young male offenders

Tshem, Tembakazi January 2009 (has links)
The aim of this study is to explore the experiences and evaluations of young male offenders who were diverted to family group conferencing in order to improve current services. An exploratory research design was chosen to obtain an understanding of what these young male offenders experienced during their conferencing and also to seek out their recommendations for future improvement of the family group conferencing diversion programme. This study comprised two samples which were purposively selected. The first sample was made up of ten young male offenders and the second sample comprised of the parents and /or guardians of the young male offenders. The data was collected using structured interview schedules. The data was collected on separate occasions for the two samples. Each interview lasted about 30- 40 minutes each. The findings of this study showed that there is still a need to train probation officers on appropriate implementation of family group conferencing and that families also have a role to play towards succefull implementation of diversion programmes. It is evident from the findings that young offenders need their families to support and care for them during difficult situations, as purported by the systems theory whereby society is regarded as a system with different parts and families are an important part of this system. Young offenders belong to families and families are part of communities and society. It is also important to note that victims are part of families, thus also part of society and the system. Family group conferencing provide an opportunity for all these parts to meet in a mediated environment to address the harm caused and make amends. The findings of this study also showed that there is a need to educate the general public about child justice legislation and the emerging trends in the field of child justice including diversion programmes.
