NON-LINEAR DYNAMICAL SYSTEMS AT THE CONVERGENCE OF ENGINEERING AND SOCIAL SCIENCES: A TRANSDISCIPLINARY APPROACH TO ADAPTIVE SUSTAINABLITYTanya Purwar (11198823) 07 December 2024 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">This thesis investigates nonlinear dynamical systems through a transdisciplinary lens, addressing three critical domains impacting human well-being: environmental pollution, climate migration and gender dynamics, and public health security. These are environmental induced challenges that impact health and social stability. These domains exhibit nonlinear characteristics that require adaptive, sustainable solutions beyond traditional linear approaches. Utilizing the Adaptive Pathways Framework (APF), this research integrates multi-scale fluid dynamics, engineering design, applied mathematics, and social science insights to create resilient models aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). The first focus area, aeroacoustic noise in urban air mobility, explores bio-inspired metamaterials for passive noise control. Periodic and quasi-periodic micropillar arrays inspired by sharkskin demonstrate significant noise reduction, contributing to quieter and more sustainable urban environments. The second area addresses climate migration, applying dimensional analysis from fluid dynamics to model migration patterns influenced by environmental, social, and economic factors. This framework offers policymakers quantitative tools for climate adaptation strategies. The third area centers on refugee empowerment, focusing on gender-targeted interventions that integrate STEM education and entrepreneurship to support social integration. This work provides scalable pathways for empowering refugee women and fostering resilience within refugee communities. The fourth area addresses gender equity in STEM, employing nudge theory and design thinking to challenge biases and create a more inclusive environment. Behavioral interventions here offer strategies for sustainable change in scientific research practices. Finally, the fifth area, public health security, explores sustainable innovations for pandemic resilience, including virus filtration and electrostatic disinfection technologies, balancing immediate health needs with long-term environmental considerations. This thesis underscores the efficacy of transdisciplinary approaches in tackling complex, nonlinear challenges, promoting sustainable, adaptive outcomes for global environmental, social, gender, and health stability.</p>

Innovationers möjliggörande för ekonomisk tillväxt inom svensk fotboll / Enabling innovations for economic growth in Swedish footballHolmberg, Max, Hruska, Michelle January 2024 (has links)
Football is currently the sport with the largest global participation and revenue, significantly impacting both social and economic spheres. Commercialized sports face intense competition and must continuously innovate to achieve social and economic growth. Entrepreneurship, which involves creating and commercializing innovations, drives economic growth and is the most effective tool for strengthening the identity of sports organizations and improving their overall performance, both economically and socially. This study examines how innovations and innovation processes are utilized to enable economic growth within Swedish football, focusing on four professional clubs in the highest division, Allsvenskan: Djurgården, AIK, Hammarby, and IFK Göteborg. The purpose is to enhance the understanding of how sports organizations employ innovations and innovation processes to facilitate economic growth. The study aims to encourage and inspire recognition of the importance of innovation and development within sports organizations. Eight respondents from four different clubs were interviewed in a semi-structured interview series, and the empirical data was analyzed phenomenographically. The study identifies several patterns in how the examined sports organizations approach and perceive innovation. Social innovation emerges as the single most important type of innovation, as it contributes to the local community, enhances the club's reputation, and secures financial support.

推廣型使用者的社會創新:常民專家如何改寫台灣衛生棉條科技的社會腳本 / Social innovations of promoter-users: How lay-experts rewrite the social scripts of tampon technology in Taiwan吳文欣, Wu, Wen Hsin Unknown Date (has links)
The purpose of this case study “Network of Tampon Technology in Taiwan” is to explore how users can do to expand a social-technical network. Tampon has been introduced to Taiwan over 30 years. However, this technical object and tampon usage cannot be spread successfully because of the deep-rooted script of values and the structural barriers of law, market and knowledge. As government and authority discourage indirectly from tampon usage, the restricted feminine hygiene products market and the script of values both disadvantage expansion of tampon technology, Promoter-Users choose to run away from the main menstrual management. They break the traditional script of values by strengthening physical education and delivering relevant knowledge, free themselves from the restricted tampon market by creating multiple choices and developing commodity circulation channels. “Users” are primary actors in network of tampon technology in Taiwan. They break the expert-oriented distribution model and create another user-driven structural model. As social environment and market mechanism are both monopolized, plus traditional authority in charge of distributing innovations is on the opposite side, users who use products and experience menstruation can still show their agencies and promote social innovations in order to pursue better body experiences and commodity channels. Loosening of gender structure and emergence of modern values help Promoter-Users rewrite the social scripts of tampon technology in Taiwan. Liberation of female body and unrestricted social climate make social-cultural transformation complement social innovations well. Diversified knowledge and international communication allow Promoter-Users to advocate a revolution of everyday-life technology. Promoter-Users such as Vanessa also initiate a new culture of lay-experts and offer another way of expanding a social-technical network. This study expects to provide governmental policy, educational organization, medical authority and the pubic an opportunity to know more about tampon and a space for introspection by introducing Promoter-Users’ efforts. We look forward to a more friendly policy environment and better physical education in order to rewrite the fixed menstrual management and the traditional script of values.

Internet jako prostor pro sociální inovace? Analýza prostředí digitálních podob současného českého tisku / Internet as a space for social innovations? An analysisof the current Czech online newspaper marketSoukupová, Lenka January 2013 (has links)
Taking into account the theoretical approaches of Joseph Alois Schumpeter and Clayton Christensen to innovation, this case study is mapping the current Czech environment of written online media. Traditional media houses are dealing with the crisis of finances and information as generally described by Christensen, which means they are in real need for innovation yet they are not always successful. Other new incentives also appear on the market. Similarly to the situation abroad, the NGO sector is able to provide quality content on issues of its interest. Social innovation is rather a buzzword in the country, yet the author identifies a couple of efforts in the online written media. The author also suggests there might even be a niche for a social enterprise in the area to cooperate with the NGO sector and blogosphere. Keywords creative destruction, disruptive innovation, social entrepreneurship, social innovation, Czech Republic, print media online, watchdog journalism Abstrakt Tato případová studie nahlíží teoretickou optikou kreativní destrukce dle Josepha Aloise Schumpetera a rozkladných technologií dle Claytona Christensena prostředí digitálních podob současného českého tisku.

It appeared relevant to analyze if social innovation can be considered as a lever for change. Innovation centers are facing an uncertain context, as there appears to be less financial involvement from the state, a real transformation of their missions and a potential public policy reform. We’re soliciting the two existing visions of social innovation. As a result, it represents an answer to social needs and to generate positive impacts. Its process mobilizes local heterogeneous actors, which are forming networks and sharing resources, in order to create a common project. So, we’re formulating an evaluation grid on seven criteria. Then, to offer a new model for innovation centers we’re drawing on the social and solidarity economy business model. This field seems to be conducive for social innovations development. We’re building the epistemological (pragmatic constructivism) and methodological frameworks (exploratory qualitative research, abductive logic, multiple-case study) for the research. For our results, seven dimensions of the social innovation are spotlighted in innovations centers functioning. The social and solidarity economy business model reveals mobilization and solidarity issues. We’re recommending to initiate communities of practice, an innovation centers’ development focused on a common destiny, a democratic management. Finally, we’re suggesting that innovation centers should be more committed in a sustainable territorial attractiveness, so they can be a part of the local value-chain, by considering the territory as a common good
