The landscape changes according to the intensity of the social economic, political and cultural processes. The second prior conjecture understands that even with the transformations of the landscape, in form and content, there are resistances. Those are fruits of the permanence, maintaining the coexistence of different social practices, turning the environment more complex. Being like this, its understanding is interwoven to the geographical and historical processes, being the change and permanence the sources for the understanding of the current environment. The third part is the place where the consequences of those processes are felt in a more intense way, although in many times their explanations need the understanding of the phenomena in other scales. In the thesis, we pursued developing those prior conjectures starting from the discussion of the environmental path of Guarapuava PR, using as methodological instruments of research the environmental history and the cartography. The empiric contribution of Guarapuava city for the development of the research is in its social space formation and in the interaction of the local society with their natural goods, in the past and in the present. The relationship of Guarapuava society with the natural fields, the forests and the soil, has being altered accordingly to its insertion in the regional and national productive system, producing a unique landscape, fruit of the physiographic combination with the forms of social appropriation... The Therapeutic Benefits of Community Gardening| An Exploration of the Impact of Community Gardens Through the Lens of Community Psychology

Michaels, Meredith 15 August 2013 (has links)

Community psychology is a unique field of psychology that perceives individuals as linked to their context. The role of psychologist within this branch of psychology is viewed as one who is responsible for addressing the individual, as well as the social patterns and structures that adversely affect well-being. The use of community gardens as a therapeutic tool may serve as a two-fold intervention that can be used at both the individual and community levels. This doctoral project explores the therapeutic benefits of community gardening through the lens of the community psychology perspective. Framed within a community psychology perspective in which clients are inextricably linked to their social and physical context, engaging with nature through community gardening may lead to healthier client outcomes. A literature review was conducted to inform the author of current data related to the study of community gardens and their impact on mental health. The reviewed data pointed to the impact of community gardens on individual physical and mental health, and the social and physical community contexts that additionally affect mental health. Additional consultations with experts in the field were used to corroborate and extend research findings in the literature. The information collected from the current body of literature and consultations were presented as a professional presentation to mental health workers to increase their knowledge of the therapeutic benefits of community gardening. The limitations of the current body of literature, considerations for application in clinical practice, and recommendations for future areas of study were also considered.

An assessment of corporate environmental reporting performance and its alignment to environmental management systems in a South African gold mining company / Onkaetse Brenda Diseko

Diseko, Onkaetse Brenda January 2013 (has links)
Corporate Social Environmental Reporting is a process through which companies and organisations can inform the societies within which they operate about their performance on non-economic issues including environmental performance. The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) is an internationally recognised organisation which has frameworks and guidelines organisations can use to standardise the reports which they issue to the society. Data gathering for reporting on environmental performance can be done in several ways, including by means of the data required for an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on the ISO 14001 “plan – do – check - act” commonly known as the Demming cycle, aimed at continual improvement of environmental performance by an organisation. The clauses in an EMS allow for an organisation to measure its performance and hence the generation of data which can be used for interpretation on environmental performance. The utility of data generated from an EMS is optimised for input towards the generation of a Corporate Social Environmental Report by the level of alignment between the reporting process and the system used for data generation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the level of such an alignment between the two processes for AngloGold Ashanti (AGA), a multinational gold mining company which issues its reports according to GRI guidelines and also has an ISO 14001 EMS in place. The method used entailed a desktop documentary analysis, a questionnaire answered by individuals responsible for implementation of the EMS and an interview posed at corporate level. It was found that despite corporate commitment to continually improve CSER, there is a relative weak alignment between the two systems, with consequent duplication of effort and sub optimal use of human resources. Recommendations for improved alignment include focused education and training of staff on the relationship between CSER and EMS, and improvements in EMS monitoring and measuring procedures. / Thesis (M. [en] AN EXPERIENCE ON ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION: BUILDING SOCIAL-ENVIRONMENTAL VALUES / [pt] UMA EXPERIÊNCIA EM EDUCAÇÃO AMBIENTAL: FORMAÇÃO DE VALORES SOCIOAMBIENTAIS

ROOSEVELT FIDELES DE SOUZA 12 December 2003 (has links)
[en] This research was motivated by the author s professional experience, as a Geography teacher, working as a member of the team responsible for the Project of Environmental Education for Public School Children, which has been taking place within the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro campus since 1998. From the theoretical perspective, this study aimed to do a review of previous researches, for those in favor or against of the involvements of firms to address the social and environmental issues. This study analyzed the theme of CSR under the perspective of the corporate management evolution model, which started from a philanthropic model to what we see today as an important strategic decision tool. The climate change, caused by the global warming has been driven the evolution of the CSR model. From the empirical perspective, the main goal was to investigate the correlation between firm’s financial performance and social/environmental performance for Brazilian companies from 2001 to 2007, using available information provided by the Braziian Institute of Social and Economic Analysis (IBASE). Two types of panel data econometric models were used. The fixed effects model was used to investigate the existence of correlations between the financial indicators and the social/environmental indicators. Additionally, a panel data IV model was used to investigate causality and try to answer the question whether the social/environmental performance has a positive or negative impact on the firm’s financial performance. Results show a positive relationship between corporate social/environmental performance and financial performance. The internal social investment is the most relevant social/environmental variable in this result, since it is positively correlated with the financial performance indicator represented by the variable return on assets (ROA). The causality analysis showed also that the internal social investment has a positive effect on the corporate financial performance.

[en] PIRAÍ RIVER: ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGES AND SOCIAL-CULTURE TRANSFORMATIONS. STREAM, ROUTE AND COURSE OF A WATER BODY / [pt] RIO PIRAÍ: MUDANÇAS AMBIENTAIS TRANSFORMAÇÕES SOCIO-CULTURAIS CURSO, PERCURSO E TRANSCURSO DE UM CORPO D´ÁGUA

ELEN MARIA GOMES CABRAL 22 February 2007 (has links)
[en] The purpose of this text is to be academic-scientific praxis commited with a geo-history-social transformation of a object body of water in a subject body of water, in other words, recognize the body of water as formed by human cultural scraps. It was decided for a bioregional vision with the purpose of rescue human community (simbolism, history and culture) and biotic community connection, since it is essential to get this kind of knowledge to this research. It´s necessary evoke the Piraí river as a icon of pertinence in the contruction of the social-environmental identity of the Piraí cintizens, to indicate elements for positive actions of citizenship. The Piraí river was subject of two major changes that resulte in large environmental changes and consequently, deep social-culture transformations. That is of acept rescue the river as body of water, its history redeemed by the memory of its enviromental subjects, its sacredness, veiled and unveiled by its representations of identities, and profanity. It´s necessary to remake the meaning of water and body concepts, to evoke the body of water in its social culture devir, in its streams, route and course of territoriality and (not) territoriality, with the purpose of constructing a new reality aiming at the quality of life of its population.

Sustentabilidade nas empresas e filosofia lixo zero

Pietzsch, Natália January 2016 (has links)
This study's main objectives were (i) to understand the main drivers leading Corporate Social Environmental Responsibility (CSER) and (ii) to do an analysis in order to elucidate the key benefits, challenges and critical success factors for a company applying Zero Waste into their process. To achieve the first objective, this research has proposed a questionnaire containing the drivers for CSER presented in the literature, which has sent to several companies from different segments and sizes in Brazil. The results indicate these main drivers for CSER in Brazil: meet national laws and regulations (cited by 87% of responding companies), seek recognition of Sustainable Enterprise and brand enhancement (62%), contributing to the protection of the environment and pollution control (58%), seek to reduce the generation of waste (53%) and differentiate itself from other companies in the sector (47%). It was identified that the drivers found for CSER are representative of the sample, regardless of the size, the leadership, the region, the industrial segment, the market activities (local, national or international), and the end customer of the company, as indicated by Qui-quadrado and Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests, contrary to the findings on literature. In order to achieve the second objective, it has performed a systematic review of the literature for compile concepts, principles, actions, benefits, challenges and critical success factors from the implementation of the ZW in different scenarios. Based on this compilation, it was conducted a case study in a small metallurgical, located in the Vale dos Sinos region, in Brazil, in order to identify which items were related to the company’s scenario. For this company, twelve benefits were identified, which can be achieved through ZW implementation, nine challenges were found to be overcome, and twenty-one critical success factors were identified, which are essential to achieve the goals proposed by the ZW. This study advocates some aspects that should be developed in the Brazilian scenario in order to support ZW implementation, corroborating to consolidate this philosophy as reference in waste management model in business scenario.

Of sands of the beach to sands of the housing: a sociombiental shock in Fortaleza - Ce / Das areias da praia Ãs areias da moradia:um embate socioambiental em Fortaleza - CE

Ernandy Luis Vasconcelos de Lima 27 June 2005 (has links)
The knowledge of the geodynamic and social evolution constitues the essential analyze for the planning of the use and occupation, regarding the alterations of the human activities in the natural processes. It avoids futures environmental damages. The study area is located at Serviluz locality, Fortaleza County, Northeastern Brazil. The main objective is to define the environmental dynamics through the characterization of the aeolian dynamics in the transport of sediments in the Future and Serviluz beaches and of the analysis of the natural and social impacts caused the Serviluz locality population. The applied methodology was based on a systematic approach, using qualitative and quantitative data and analyzing the evolution of an environmental system starting from the geodynamics and social processes in the urban area occupation near the coast. Socio-environmental impacts are affecting the natural dynamics in the study area. Dune migration and aeolian sediments along the Serviluz coast are burying the houses, buildings, beach huts, access roads and the urban infrastructure. Besides, the greater part of community does not have the house's ownership because it occupied the area illegally in navy lands. Currently six thousand families, this place serves as a local for activities port, industrial and residential. So, a knowledge integrated for the environmental characterization was done for understanding of the socio-environmental impact verified in the study area, starting from the located connections in this place among the natural phenomena (coastal dynamics) and social aspects.
