Pregnant on Campus: The Stigma of Undergraduate Pregnancy

January 2017 (has links)
acase@tulane.edu / Gendered social stigmas including those surrounding pregnancy, abortion, and adoption are pervasive, as it is estimated that a majority of women will experience one or more throughout their life course. Seeking to explore the social norms and mechanisms surrounding pregnancy and pregnancy-related choices in the demographic of elite private university students, the present study investigated how undergraduate students perceive pregnancy amongst their fellow unmarried undergraduate peers. Specifically, this study examined whether an undergraduate woman’s decision to have an abortion, carry to term and raise the child, or carry to term and place the child for adoption affects others’ perceptions of the woman herself. The findings are complex, as results suggest than an unmarried undergraduate woman may be judged differently depending on her pregnancy and her subsequent choices regarding that pregnancy, with the most extreme differences emerging between a woman who chooses carry to term and raise the child and a woman who chooses abortion. Furthermore, the results suggest that a pregnant undergraduate woman, regardless of whether she chooses to have an abortion or to carry to term, may face negative judgment from her peers. Whereas a woman who chooses to have an abortion is perceived as less moral and warm than a woman who chooses to raise her child, a woman who chooses to raise her child is perceived as having lower career aspirations than a woman who has an abortion. Moderation by abortion approval and religiosity were also examined. Findings are discussed in light of a stigma tradeoffs model. / 1 / Meagan E Magaldi

Having a voice : Representation in fiction and why it matters

Stenquist, Sanya January 2015 (has links)
Some research has been done on this subject, although sparsely. The purpose of this study is to determine how, why, and to what extent representation in fiction matters, in regard to socially stigmatized groups of people, focusing on mental health, sexuality, and gender roles. The main focus is on bonding with fictional characters, how it relates to representation and its importance. Eleven (cis)female participants shared their own experiences with this. Each written reply was condensed, eventually narrowed down to three main components considered central to this phenomenon; (1) a sense of isolation, (2) an inability to cope, and (3) relatability in characters. These components can all be connected to loneliness, which suggests that loneliness plays a large part in one's sense of self-worth. Thus, representation can be argued to be vital, due to its function of including and speaking for stigmatized groups of people, granting a sense of belonging and support.

Λάγιος, Βασίλειος 13 April 2009 (has links)
The research examines the percipience held by the cultural group of the foreign students about their feelings, experiences and impressions they have developed through the behavior of other students in interactive situations. In particular, we examined if the cultural minority of the foreign students considers itself as stigmatized and marginal by causing to others prejudices and stereotypes. We also examined how other factors, like the origin, the sex, the age and the place of living, influence that percipience. In the research participated 411 foreign students of the elementary schools of the regions Achaia, Ileia and Aitoloakarnania. The students were given the stigma consciousness questionnaire. The results showed that a great percentage of the foreign students become conscious of these facts. They also revealed that the factor of origin influence this percipience while others factors does not affect stigma consciousness.

Adaptação cultural e validação para o Brasil da escala Tuberculosis Related Stigma - Fase I / Cultural adaptation and validation of the Tuberculosis-Related Stigma Scale to Brazil - Phase I

Crispim, Juliane de Almeida 17 October 2016 (has links)
Os resultados encontrados apontam que a escala Tuberculosis-Related Stigma poderá se constituir em um instrumento válido e confiável; no entanto, a realização do estudo de campo em futuras pesquisas poderá contemplar de fato aplicação dessa escala no contexto brasileiro / Stigma associated with tuberculosis (TB) has been an object of interest in several regions of the world. The behavior presented by patients as result of social discrimination has contributed to a delay in diagnosis and the abandonment of treatment, leading to an increase in the cases of TB and drug resistance. The identification of populations affected by stigma and its measurement can be assessed with the use of valid and reliable instruments developed or adapted to the target culture. The objective of this study was to culturally adapt and obtain psychometric properties of the Tuberculosis-related stigma scale in Brazil, for TB patients. The Tuberculosis-related stigma is a specific scale for measuring stigma associated with TB, to be applied to patients under treatment for this disease. It presents two dimensions to be assessed, namely community\'s perspectives in relation to TB and patient\'s perspectives in relation to TB. The first has 11 items regarding the behavior of the community in relation to TB, and the second is made up of 12 items related to feelings such as fear, guilt and sorrow in coping with the disease. A methodological study, with a cross-sectional design, was developed in the city of Ribeirão Preto, in the state of São Paulo. Once the scale was translated and back-translated, data were collected from patients under treatment for TB in reference outpatient clinics in the city. In compliance with the guidelines of the DISABKIDS® group, semantic validation consisted in ensuring the understanding of the items by the target population, by means of interviews with 17 respondents selected for the study, between September and December 2014. Descriptive analyses showed that the results found in this stage were satisfactory, demonstrating that the scale was well accepted and easily understood by part of the participants, with suggestions for changing some colloquial terms, but without modification of the items. Following the semantic validation process, a pilot test was conducted with 83 TB patients, in order to obtain the initial psychometric properties of the scale in the Brazilian Portuguese version, allowing to simulate the field study. As regards its psychometric properties, the scale presented acceptable internal consistency for its dimensions, with values >= 0.70, absence of floor and ceiling effects, which is favorable for the property of scale responsiveness, satisfactory converging validity for both dimensions, with values over 0.30 for initial studies, and diverging validity with adjustment values different from 100%. The results found show that the Tuberculosis-related stigma scale can be a valid and reliable instrument, however, only the development of a field study in future research can verify the application of this scale in the Brazilian context

The pain that nobody sees, "docilizados bodies" with leprosy reactional episodes

Thayza Miranda Pereira 27 February 2013 (has links)
Leprosy is a stigmatized high power incapacitating disease which is partly attributed to leprosy reactional states. The relevance of this theme is the urgent need to diagnose and treat leprosy reaction episodes, acute inflammatory events in the course of a chronic, disease that can affect individuals of leprosy before, during treatment and after discharge. It aims to understand the experience of bodies with reactive episode of leprosy at the individual, family and community ambits. This is on the assumption that the reactive episodes mark the lives of people contributing to stigma and social isolation. It is a qualitative research, developed at the light of existential phenomenology. This study was set at the reference center for leprosy in the city of Floriano in PiauÃ. There were nine phenomenological interviews, in April 2012, with four women and five men who had or have lived such experience. To reveal the phenomenon of living with leprosy reactions, we were led to question: "What is it like, for you to have leprosy and the reactional episode presented" (considering their personal, family and community)? Thus, the subjectsâ speeches were analyzed from the perspective of scholars of existential phenomenology. The analysis of descriptions led us to identify the thematic units: aching bodies - the discovery of leprosy; cracked bodies - and body transformation experience; broken bodies - the uncertainty of cure due to sequels; re-signified bodies - life changes after leprosy reaction episodes; body senses - experience in family and community; disciplined bodies - experience in the health care service. The understanding of the phenomenon culminated with the drawn assumption, allowing us to reveal some facets that mean for subject-transformations and changes in their lives, occasioned by the maintenance of leprosy reaction episodes, installed by physical disabilities and functional limitations reflected in the labor activities and Socioeconomic aspects of mundane existence, thus strengthening the social stigma that permeates leprosy / leprosy reaction episodes. It also revealed the autonomy of self-care emphasized by the knowledge of the disease and its implications, the family and community support needed in order to deal with the sickness, and the ability to reframe life producing encounters between health professionals and people affected by leprosy; considering the knowledge and practices existentially built.

Relações de respeito entre Mestres e alunos em uma tradição cultural como a capoeira podem favorecer o enfrentamento de preconceitos e estigmas / Abstract: Adolescence is a unique developmental stage, during which culture and social relationships strongly influence the formation of individuals and are reflected in the establishment of social roles that condition the participation of individuals in the groups to which they belong. The aim of this study was to reflect on the conditions for coping with and overcoming prejudice and stigma in a group of adolescents enrolled in a capoeira training program. Method: Based on qualitative research methods, a group including 18 adolescents was monitored throughout 33 120-minute weekly capoeira training sessions held at a community centre for adolescent care in the city of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil in 2011-2012. The activities were recorded on video and in fieldwork notebooks. The records were analyzed based on the themes of interest for this study. Results: In the earlier sessions, prejudice and stigmatization were detected in the adolescents¿ speech and behavior. Over time, however, the participants developed strategies for coping with and overcoming these negative influences. Conclusion: The analyses revealed behaviors and dialogues indicative of changes in the adolescents in relation to some of the concepts and prejudices that characterized the early interactions and mutual relationships among the group members. A respectful relationship between teachers and students according to such a traditional culture, such as capoeira, seem to favor the coping with and overcoming prejudice and stigma / Doutorado / Saude da Criança e do Adolescente / Doutor em Ciências / 01-P-4525/2013 / CAPES

Pekkarinen, Marianne January 2021 (has links)
Bakgrund. Resultat. Syntesen delades in i två teman.
