Performance at the Edge of Apocalypse : An ethnographic study of collective identity construction in a neo-nationalist social movement in Sweden

Lindh, Kristofer January 2017 (has links)
In several countries of the Global North, right-wing parties are successfully mobilizing public support, influencing political debates and introducing arguments and rhetorics that draw on xenophobia, populism and ethnocentrism, ostensibly with a purpose to amplify the “national order of things” (Malkki 1992). This thesis addresses this development by providing an ethnography, based fieldwork, of the Swedish social movement Folkets Demonstration, which arranges anti-government manifestations on squares most usually in Stockholm. Drawing on classical theories on performance by Victor Turner and Erving Goffman, I investigate how the demonstrations of the movement facilitate the construction of a collective identity of “the people”, which also includes exploring the world view of the demonstrators. As I argue, through the socio-emotionality of the demonstrations, the movement conducts a cultural performance of national cohesion vis-à-vis the Swedish national community, cosmologically perceived as on the edge of an apocalypse due to immigration and the alleged cosmopolitanist agenda of the government. In addition, I argue that the demonstrations can be understood as strategically managed towards idealized performances of democracy. Hence, the demonstrations can be considered regressive-utopian performances of a national-democratic community, furthermore embedded in a polarization between “the people” and “the elite” and through which the collective identity of “the people” is constructed.

Getting down to business : An exploratory study of Swedish nonprofits’ commercial responses to revenue loss

Breslin, Samuel January 2017 (has links)
This paper examines whether commercial activity within Swedish nonprofits engaged in international humanitarian assistance stems from previous losses in private and government revenue. Resource dependence theory suggests that nonprofits, as rational actors, will shift their resource-earning strategies in response to competition or a lack of resources. Swedish research has not focused heavily on nonprofit finances and commercial activity. Through constructing a unique dataset with organizational data and sources of revenue for members of the Swedish Fundraising Control (Svensk Insamlingskontroll) from 2011 to 2015, this study tests panel data for patterns in commercial revenue use. Trend analysis, as well as fixed-effect and OLS estimations do not support previous research claiming that increased commercial revenue results from decreases in public and private revenue. Instead, preliminary results suggest that revenue growth and organizational age are positively associated with commercial revenue. Isomorphism is explored as a mechanism and calls for more Swedish research and databases are made.

MAMMASKAM : EN ANTROPOLOGISK STUDIE AV SKAM RELATERAT TILL MODERSKAP / MOM SHAMING : AN ANTHROPOLOGICAL STUDY OF SHAME RELATED TO MOTHERHOOD

Ennab Vogel, Lemón January 2020 (has links)
The early 1990’s gave concurrent rise to increasing income gaps between the rich and the poor, low- and middle-income citizens, and to an agitated debate in the United States, that divided moms into two distinctly antagonistic groups: working moms and stay-home moms. Based on shared value sets, moms from all over the socioeconomic spectra could unite in support of and in opposition to either the more conservatively leaning or progressively liberal standpoint on social constructs of mothership and woman. The contemporary term for describing the social phenomena “Mom shaming”, reflects the rhetoric nature of ongoing conflicts characterized by particularly pronounced forms of shaming; manifested to a lesser degree in stable polarizations of dualistic antitheses, but rather in multifaceted, instable contradictions among contemporary stereotypes of mom. The aim is to reach a deeper understanding of its meanings and prevalence in Sweden, and to identify the places, situations and social institutions associated with it. On the premises of observed interactions between (primarily) women in the commentaries of social media platforms and with the help of informants, this study aims to depict individuals’ experiences of motherhood in relation to their conceptions and experiences of other women’s motherhood, and describe how prevailing conceptions, actions and standpoints among moms, influence individuals’ perspectives on motherhood.

(Om) Krisen Kommer! : En antropologisk studie kring krisberedskap i Sverige med fokus på det civila ansvaret.

Jimenez, Sofia January 2020 (has links)
This essay serves to investigate how Sweden’s emergency preparedness has moved from primarily being a matter of the state to a matter of the individual. The shift in responsibility has been analysed with the theory of rationalism and the relationship between state and society. The method used was semi-structured interviews done with eight individuals who identify as preppers, to some extent. The emergency preparedness shift to the individual has come with some problematic traits as civilians are used to the state’s authority and care. This has led to majority of people to not be prepared, which became prominent when the Covid-19 pandemic came to Sweden. What is asked from individuals is at least one week of individual preparedness and includes food, water, heat and communication. Information has mainly been distributed by the Authority for Civil Protection and Emergency Preparedness (MSB). Emergency preparedness can therefore be discussed as both reason and emotion.
