Going ALL Ink : An anthropological phenomenology study of a moral self, individuality, and embodiment through the practice of tattoos

Ånséhn, Ludvig January 2021 (has links)
Habitus is a type of order that explains how an individual becomes a member of a society or a culture and can be studied to learn about that society or culture. Daniel Miller is introducing a similar approach to order of individuals’ material relationships through which one can learn about meaningful representation of the individual subjects themselves. These relationships could be interpreted as being highly subjective and be seen in the form of a practice of self-construction. In a search for an anthropology of morality authors such as Mattingly (et.al) are complementary using virtue ethics and Foucault´s notion of “a care of the self” as a moral practice to study moral subjectivity and its formation. Strathern and Stewart claim that embodiment, as a theoretical concept, can show how the mind, body, and experience come together and provide insight into personhood. This thesis focuses on tattoos as a moral practice, by studying individuals through a narrative of a moral being, with the aim to understand its formation of moral subjectivity and its embodiment of individuality. In conclusion, there will be argued that the practice of tattoos creates a negotiation between the individual mind and body, and between the practice itself and the society where it takes place.

Vem är Gud? : En antropologisk studie om hur begreppet Gud används i Anonyma Narkomaner

Hedin, Alma January 2020 (has links)

Following the Hallyu : Korean Imaginations in Swedish Adults

Edström, Martin January 2020 (has links)
This paper is an empirical study examining the reasoning behind Swedish adults’ choices of attending Korean language programs in the Republic of Korea. By using anthropological modes of inquiry and methods such as participant observation and different qualitative interviews, the focus of the research is on the mental processes behind these choices. Through a utilization of the analytical concept of imagination, what is argued is that these individuals’ choices are engendered and regulated by several factors, such as engagement with Korean culture-products and certain practical conditions, but that the greatest importance lies with their own understandings and agency.

Den turkiska vitheten : En postkolonial analys av interna icke-statliga organisationers arbete med minoritetsfrågor i Turkiet

Yasar, Sara January 2020 (has links)
This essay investigates the role of non-governmental organizations in Turkey that work with minority rights. The purpose of this study is to get a better understanding on how domestic NGOs understand and prioritize human rights and how different social structures are restricting NGOs from engaging in human rights of the Kurdish minority. To answer this question this study utilizes a qualitative content analyses of the published research on human rights and NGOs. The analysis has been conducted from a postcolonial perspective. The finding has shown that even if Turkish human right defenders are restricted on how they can work with human rights violations in the society there still is an engagement in trying to work with these social problems. This essay concludes that Kurds have been restricted from working with human rights by means of the Turkish anti-terror law, which may have negatively affected the visibility of Kurdish activist, but not stopped them from engaging in social issues. However, there is still a need for development in the Turkish NGO regime, but the westerniza- tion project may not be the answer for Turkish human right development. This essay argues that the human rights education projects in Turkey should be conducted by domestic NGOs own understanding of human rights and only then there will be potential for real human rights development.

Mining the City : Urban Transformation and the Loss of City Space in Kiruna, Sweden

Karlsson, Richard January 2018 (has links)
This thesis examines the urban transformation and deformation caused by the expansion of the local Kiirunavaara mine in Kiruna, Sweden. In 2004, the local mining company, LKAB, announced that rapid ground deformations had been discovered in central Kiruna and that buildings and residents would have to be relocated in order for production to continue. This thesis is an attempt to analyze the way that local relationships to space and place become relevant during processes of intense urban loss and renewal. By analyzing discourses and statements by residents, planners and officials, I aim to highlight the historical contingencies and responses to the loss of the urban environment and the implementation of the new city centre designed to replace the old one. More specifically, I argue that a social and economic dependency on mining preclude official contestations and alternatives to the transformation while residents find alternative ways of expressing concern. I analyze residents’ relationship to the built environment and the mining company through focusing on discourses of affect and enactment. I furthermore discuss the elite visions of the new city that despite widespread dissatisfaction emphasize shared governance and sustainability and the ways they contribute to a depoliticization of the experience of displacement. Through ethnographic methods of participant observation and interviews, this thesis contributes to an understanding of mining towns and urban anthropology of space and place in the northern hemisphere.

Att konstruera människohandel : En intersektionell analys om svensk dagspress konstruktion av människohandel för sexuella ändamål / To construct human trafficking : An intersectional analysis of the Swedish daily press' construction of human trafficking for sexual purposes

Svedholm, Hanna, Demirovic, Elma January 2021 (has links)
This study aims to analyze how swedish daily press construct humantrafficking for sexual purposes. The empirical material consists of 16 articlespublished in 2019 and 2020 from two Swedish newspapers, Dagens Nyheterand Expressen. The study examines how trafficking is constructed and alsohow the central actors such as victims, sexbyers and pimps are constructed inthe daily press. We have used a content analysis where an intersectionalperspective has been assumed. The material was analyzed on the basis of thetheories "doing gender" and "sexual scripts", but also on the basis of theconcepts "representation", "stereotype" and "ethnification". The results of the study show a recurring theme that is constructed in thenewspapers and it is the problem of identifying whether it is prostitution orhuman trafficking. Human trafficking is constructed only as a crime, whichsilences other important aspects of the phenomenon. Human trafficking isconstructed as a business that has a large geographical reach that can occur inboth public and hidden places, e.g. brothels, massage parlors, online or rentedapartments. To understand human trafficking per se, the key players must beput in relation to gender, ethnicity and socio-economic factors, as our studybut also previous research shows. The general construction in the Swedishdaily press of the central players in human trafficking for sexual purposes is awoman as a victim, men as sex buyers and pimps from different backgrounds. The woman is usually constructed as poor and non-Swedish who is sold by apimp and then exploited by a white man with resources. In Sweden, there is a racist view of prostitution, which is reflected in the newsarticles. When writing about ethnicity, a distinction is created between “weand them” when it is written from a general Western perspective. When it becomes a recurring pattern in the newspapers, prejudices and stereotypes arerecreated and confirmed.

Living in the container : Space and relationships inside Lipa Temporary Reception Center

Bellini, Francesca January 2023 (has links)
The Lipa Temporary Reception Centre is a transit camp, located in the North-West part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, for only single men who cross the Balkan Route to enter the European Union territory through the Croatian border. This thesis aims to describe the life inside the camp, combining an analysis of Lipa architecture with the experiences of the people who transited through there. A focus on space and relationships will then drive this thesis, reflecting on how the transit camp features and stylistic decisions affected people's experiences: discussing how places and individuals mutually influenced each other in such a context. More specifically, it will highlight the broad political implications that led to the opening of migrant reception centres like Lipa and discuss their hypothetical temporary nature, studying the roles played by European Union Institutions and non-governmental organizations within the field. This research is the outcome of ethnographic fieldwork conducted inside the Lipa Temporary Reception Centre from November 8th until December 19th and from the investigation of the existing literature regarding the design of camps and the Balkan Route.

Worn symbols and their role in the military – a study of their effects and perceived value in the French army / Burna symboler och deras roll inom militären - en intervjustudie av deras effekter och upplevda värde inom den franska armén

Gustavsson, Filip January 2023 (has links)
This study aims to explore the perceived value and effect of symbols worn in the military. Since uniforms create uniformity, symbols are one of the few ways individuals can distinguish themselves. These symbols hold more value than just a piece of fabric which serves a practical purpose. Within the Swedish armed forces, this has given rise not only to debates but also incidents regarding the trials in which these symbols are earnt. However, contemporary research on the topic remains limited. Through an interpretive applied-theory approach, using Anthony King's theory as a framework for analyzing empirical data collected from interviews with officers and cadets within the French foreign legion, army, special forces, and infantry several discoveries were made.  Symbols used beyond organizational necessity could be linked to both positive effects such as cohesion, trust, motivation, and pride, as well as negative effects such as shame, exclusion, and prejudice. The study indicates that symbols are often valued based on two concepts: distinction and difficulty in obtaining it. By better understanding the case in the French army, the study contributes to existing research by providing an outline of the area for continued research and a clearer way forward for practical applications of symbols in the military.
