In a town in northern Norway, the sailors on whale-watching boats meet whales in their daily work. Many have up to 30 years’ experience in locating the whales, through sight or submerged microphones, and in positioning the boats in non-intrusive ways that respect the whales’ life in the open water. But in spite of this continued, long-lasting contact, the sailors agree that there is not much that can be known about the whales. This study, based on interviews to the five seamen of one whale-watching company, explores the resources on which the sailors can draw to make sense of the underwater beings they interact with. Departing from the ontological paradigm that sees the world as made up of overlapping realities, the author draws on different aspects of multispecies theory to explore how anthropomorphism, technology, and kinship are key elements that make up the sailors’ relational ontology with whales. This is analysed in the light of the doctrine of opacity, which posits that it is not necessary to know the mind of others to have successful relations. This study hopes to further the exploration of topics within maritime anthropology, and to contribute to a better understanding of human/underwater beings that leads to the preservation of their environment.

This thesis explores the concept of public art within a Swedish state agency called Public Art Agency Sweden through ethnography conducted at their virtual meetings from the fall of 2020 to the beginning of 2021. With the analytical tool of assemblages, the concept of public art is explored in terms of becoming and contestation through looking at policies within the agencies in relation to employee’s everyday endeavours. I suggest that this gives an insight into the intersection between ideas and practices within a state agency that strives to make public art a meaningful contribution and integral part of Swedish society under the premisses of the Swedish national cultural political goal. As such the contribution of this thesis is analytical attention to public art in broader governance discourses within an area of the state and culture.

Norberg är en liten stad i norra Västmanland, som mest är känd för sina historiska gruvområden. De senaste decennierna har det skett en betydande minskning av stadens befolkning och under 2023 har fler människor dött än fötts i staden. Denna minskning av befolkningen har bland annat lett till att många butiker har stängts igen och att färre arbetstillfällen finns. I denna uppsats undersöker jag vad som händer med de som blir kvar. Jag analyserar bland annat varför de valt att stanna trots den förändring som skett och hur de ser på sin egen framtid där. Jag använder mig även av autoetnografi för att ge en bredare bild genom mina egna erfarenheter och upplevelser. Detta görs tillsammans med fokus på bland annat livslinjer. Jag diskuterar även detta utifrån ett perspektiv av hemmet som en affektiv struktur, inom de fyra aspekterna: säkerhet, förtrogenhet, gemenskap samt känslan av möjlighet och hopp. Resultatet visar att anledningarna till att de stannar är att det finns en stark gemenskap och förtrogenhet. Det blir som en trygghet i sig att stanna. Dessutom finns det hopp för att framtiden kan se bättre ut där, även om det saknas möjligheter idag. Att flytta bryter mot normer och dessutom finns det trots allt en stark hemmakänsla.

This ethnographic study explores the postcolonial presence and shared history of the Dutch in Suriname. Suriname has been colonized by the Dutch for more than 300 years, after which it became independent 49 years ago. This study explores the many ways in which Suriname is still connected to the Netherlands. The research question addresses how Suriname’s postcolonial, transnational and neocolonial relations with the Netherlands are visible in everyday encounters with infrastructures in Suriname, and how these relations influence and get influenced by Dutch development work. Instead of entering the field with a set research question, the research question is the result of relying on local interlocutors' insights. Qualitative research, including fieldwork, participant observation and interviews, is performed to explore colonialism, postcolonialism, transnationalism and development work. The position of the researcher is reflected upon. This study illuminates the ongoing visibility of the Netherlands in Suriname in the infrastructure of the country, especially in the capital city Paramaribo. Different forms of international development work are found to often occur parallel to a problematised notion of help. This research contributes to the field of cultural anthropology by taking a critical stance towards ethnographic methods and showing the importance of contextualizing the field.

The real estate transaction is often described as the biggest deal in life, which makes trust in the real estate agent and a sense of increased security crucial for the customer. The competitiveness in the real estate industy makes it costly and energy-consuming for agents to create new customer relationships. The customer's need for trust and security and the agent's difficulty in creating new customer relationships have resulted in the relationship becoming important for both the customer and the real estate agent. The study therefore examines methods used by real estate agents to create and nurture relationships with customers.  The research has been conducted through qualitative interviews with representatives from four different real estate agencies. The study is based on theories of relationship building and nurturing existing relationships. The final discussion indicates that real estate agents place equal importance on nurturing existing relationships as they do on creating new ones. To achieve this, real estate agents put a lot of effort into their customer relationships in order to ensure a high level of customer satisfaction and generate positive recommendations. / Bostadsaffären beskrivs ofta som den största affären i livet, vilket gör att förtroende för mäklaren och en känsla av ökad trygghet blir avgörande för kunden. Konkurrensutsattheten i fastighetsmäklarbranschen gör det kostsamt och energikrävande för mäklare att skapa nya kundrelationer. Kundens behov av förtroende och trygghet och mäklarens svårighet att skapa nya kundrelationer har resulterat i att relationen blir viktig för både kund och fastighetsmäklare. Studien undersöker därför metoder som används av fastighetsmäklare för att skapa och vårda relationer med kunder.  Undersökningen har genomförts i form av kvalitativa intervjuer med representanter från fyra olika fastighetsmäklarföretag. Studien baseras på teorier om relationsbyggande och vårdande av befintliga relationer. Slutdiskussionen indikerar att fastighetsmäklare lägger lika stor vikt vid att vårda relationer som att skapa nya. För att åstadkomma detta lägger fastighetsmäklare stort arbete på sina kundrelationer i syfte att säkerställa en hög nivå av kundnöjdhet och generera positiva rekommendationer.

<p>Denna uppsats handlar om den svenska Försvarsmaktens jämställdhetsmål som har satts upp för att främja jämställdheten och på sikt få in fler kvinnor i organisationen. Mer specifikt handlar uppsatsen om hur kvinnorna inom Försvarsmakten anser att dessa jämställdhetsmål efterlevs. Uppsatsen baserar sig på intervjuer med tre kvinnliga yrkesofficerare som får ge sin syn på livet i och runt det militära samt på försvarets jämställdhetsarbete och hur det påverkar dem. Resultaten jag kommer fram till i denna uppsats är att Försvarsmakten för dessa tre kvinnor är en bra arbetsplats för dem, oavsett deras individuella livssituationer, men att det fortfarande finns en hel del att jobba på vad gäller jämställdhetsmålen.</p> / <p>This thesis is about the Swedish armed forces and the equality goals which have been established to give equal opportunities between the sexes and to encourage more women to join the armed forces. More specifically this study is about the women of the armed forces and whether they believe that these equality goals have been achieved or not. The thesis is based on interviews with three female officers employed by the Swedish armed forces. They answered questions regarding their experiences of the equality goals and about their day to day life regarding their job as well as questions about their social life. The conclusion of this thesis is that the armed forces in general seem to be good employer regarding equality, regardless of the women’s individual lifestyles, but that there is still work to do regarding the equality between the sexes.</p>

The rituals religious significance agrees with Clifford Geertz’s theory about the importance of religious beliefs for the human being</p>

<p>Denna studie i socialantropologi är baserad på intervjuer med två kvinnor anställda på en kvinnojour. Den handlar om deras uppfattningar och erfarenheter vad gäller uppbrottsprocessen för den kvinna som utsatts för mäns våld och hur hon blir bemött av polis och sociala myndigheter under uppbrottet. Kvinnan som ska bryta sig loss från mannen måste ofta ta kontakt med olika myndigheter för att lösa sin situation och dessa har visat sig agera på olika sätt. Deras kunskap är av stor vikt, men det är också nödvändigt att fundera på hur de personliga känslorna styr bemötandet och utgången av mötet. Människan är mån om att försöka anpassa sina känslor till situationen och tysta regler styr vad som är korrekt i en specifik situation. Dessa känslor går dock inte alltid att kontrollera och kan få konsekvenser för kvinnan i hennes process.</p> / <p>This study in social anthropology is based on interviews with two female employees at a women's aid centre. It is about their perceptions and experiences of the breakup process a woman who has been ill treated by her man goes through, and of the way she is treated by the police and the social authorities during this breakup. The woman who must break away from her man must often make contact with various authorities to resolve her situation and they have been shown to act differently. Their knowledge is of great importance, but it is also necessary to consider how their personal feelings govern how they receive the woman and the outcome of the meeting. Man is anxious to try to adapt his feelings to the situation and silent rules govern what is appropriate in a particular situation. These feelings are not always controlable and may have consequences for the woman in her process.</p>

<p>We live in a society where we are not bound to one place. We are encouraged to be mobile and constantly moving between different locations. The life in a convent is a contrast to this; nuns live at a specific place they are bounded to by vows and can not leave. The sisters in the convent of St. Birgitta, Pax Mariae have promised to stay at the same place and live by the rules of the convent. They live within the walls of the convent, an area with clear boarders. In this essay I analyse the meaning of a place, how the convent affects the nuns and their identity. The wall and the restricted area, inner- and outer attributes show where the nuns belong and characterize their life in the convent. The surrounding wall is a symbolic boarder to the nuns, but it also protects from impulses from the society and the outer world. The most evident influence the place has on the identities of the nuns is that they through vows become members of a camaraderie where they call each other sisters, changes their names and wear the same clothes. They become nuns, a ubiquitous identity. Regardless of whom they meet or of where they go, they will be seen as nuns.</p> / <p>I ett samhälle av platslöshet, där vi uppmanas att vara mobila och ständigt befinna oss på olika ställen finns en kontrast; kloster. I kloster är nunnor genom löften bundna till den specifika platsen. Nunnorna i S: ta Birgittas kloster Pax Mariae har lovat att för resten av sin levnad stanna på samma plats och leva efter regler om lydnad, fattigdom och avhållsamhet. De lever inom klostrets murar på ett väl avgränsat område. Denna uppsats behandlar platsens betydelse, hur klostret som plats påverkar nunnorna och deras identitet genom muren och det avgränsade området men även genom inre och yttre attribut som visar på nunnornas tillhörighet till klostret. Muren är för systrarna en symbolisk gräns för deras klausul, det område de inte får gå utanför, men den fungerar även skyddande mot omvärldens impulser. Den mest påtagliga inverkan platsen har på nunnornas identitet är att de genom löftena uppgår i en gemenskap där de kallar varandra för systrar, får ett nytt namn och likadana kläder. De blir i första hand nunnor och kan inte plocka av sig denna identitet. Oavsett vem de möter eller var de befinner sig tillskrivs de rollen som nunna.</p>
