Avaliação da frequência fundamental em laringes humanas excisadas com diferentes extensões de sinéquia glótica anterior / Fundamental frequency in excised human larynges after the formation of anterior glottic webs of varying extent

Pinheiro, Thaís Gonçalves 25 May 2016 (has links)
After anterior glottic web formation to decrease the length of the vibrating portion of the vocal folds, the degree of increase in fundamental frequency is variable. The ideal extent of such a web in surgical approaches aimed at raising the vocal pitch has not been established. This study compared the increase in the fundamental frequency of sound produced by excised human larynges after the formation of anterior glottic webs of varying extents (25%, 33%, and 50% of the length the vocal fold). In addition, the correlation between the fundamental frequencies before and after the experiments with the various extents of anterior glottic web formation was verified in order to create mathematical models designed to estimate the change in fundamental frequency obtained after the procedure. The vibration patterns of the vocal folds were evaluated qualitatively by laryngoscopy and by kymography with a highspeed digital camera. METHOD: We conducted an experimental study on 21 normal larynges excised from adult male human cadavers. Laryngeal vibration was artificially produced and was recorded by high speed videoendoscopy and digital kymography for analysis. The fundamental frequency and digital videokymography parameters were obtained before (as a control) and after the formation of anterior glottic webs occupying 25%, 33%, and 50% of the vocal folds, simulating a surgical technique to increase the vocal frequency, Wendler glottoplasty. RESULTS: The mean fundamental frequency differed among the various extents of anterior glottic web formation (P < 0.001), and there were significant increases from one extent to the next (P < 0.05), in hertz as well as in semitones. Regression models to estimate post-procedure fundamental frequency showed better coefficients of determination (r2) for smaller web extents. There was no aperiodic vibration in any of the experiments. The changes in glottal closure/phase and amplitude symmetry did not follow any particular pattern. CONCLUSIONS: The fundamental frequency increased significantly at each increase in the extent of the anterior glottic web, without significant changes in the qualitative parameters of vocal fold vibration. These results suggest that the extent of the glottic web influences the final result, in terms of the magnitude of the increase in the fundamental frequency, and the data presented here could serve as an initial reference for the postoperative prognosis

Chang, Tiffany 06 1900 (has links)
Classrooms are acoustically and visually noisy environments. In Quebec, auditory noise in schools is a problem that has existed for decades and is still relevant today. Background noise can negatively impact the well-being and learning of students and the well-being of teachers. Moreover, the main source of noise in schools comes from speech, a behavior that can be controlled. Students and especially teachers put pressure on their vocal system to be able to convey their oral message through auditory noise, increasing their level of vocal effort. In classrooms, visual distractions such as wall posters can be considered as visual clutter, or visual noise, an element that can also negatively impact students’ well-being and learning. Considering the multimodal, or audiovisual, nature of speech, we question the influence of visual clutter on speech. This master's thesis, composed of two studies, aimed to 1) study the subjective perception of Quebec students of their classroom in relation to objective acoustic data, and 2) study the effect of visual clutter on vocal effort in terms of acoustic parameters (SPL, f0 and CPP) and self-reported perception of female speakers. Both studies were based on mixed methods, integrating similar quantitative methods (e.g., collection of objective acoustic measurements, acoustic analyses) and similar qualitative methods (e.g., collection of subjective perceptual data, inductive analysis of open-ended questions). Quantitative and qualitative analyses of the two studies reveal that although the results relating to the objective data (acoustic measurements) were not statistically significant, the results relating to the subjective data (perception) were. For example, in the first study, students' Evaluation of the Acoustic Environment (EAE) were not all correlated with measured SPLs, and in the second study, the level of visual clutter was not correlated with acoustic parameters of SPL, f0 and CPP. These findings highlight the importance of considering and including subjective and perceptual data in studies of educational soundscapes and vocal effort, as the human experience is subjective.

"Avaliação da voz e inteligibilidade da fala de surdos antes e depois da terapia fonoaudiológica com recurso computadorizado" / Evaluation of voice and speech intelligibility of deaf individuals before and after speech therapy utilizing computerized resources.

Lopes, Daniele Cristina Jeronymo 15 September 2004 (has links)
Hearing is fundamental for the acquisition and development of speech. Nowadays, even with improved assistance to deaf people using sign language, many of them seek oral language. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the changes in the voice and speech of deaf people after application of a therapy procedure with the support of visual feedback. METHODS: 18 deaf individuals, aged between 12 and 17, took part in this study consisting of 16 speech therapy sessions using visual support. RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: The values of fundamental frequency and phonation times were found to be close to expected values for individuals with normal hearing as well as improved speech intelligibility and pitch control. These findings showed that the work with deaf people should encompass the vocal element as it provides an improvement in voice and speech.

Plante-Hébert, Julien 12 1900 (has links)
The human ability to recognize and identify speakers by their voices is unique and can be critical in criminal investigations. However, the lack of knowledge on the working of this capacity overshadows its application in the field of “forensic phonetics”. The main objective of this thesis is to characterize the processing of voices in the human brain and the parameters that influence it. In a first experiment, event related potentials (ERPs) were used to establish that intimately familiar voices are processed differently from unknown voices, even when the latter are repeated. This experiment also served to establish a clear distinction between neural components of speaker recognition and identification supported by corresponding ERP components (respectively the P2 and the LPC). An essential contrast between the processes underlying the recognition of intimately familiar voices (P2) and that of unknown but previously heard voices (N250) was also observed. In addition to clarifying the terminology of voice processing, the first study in this thesis is the first to unambiguously distinguish between speaker recognition and identification in terms of ERPs. This contribution is major, especially when it comes to applications of voice processing in forensic phonetics. A second experiment focused more specifically on the effects of learning modalities on later speaker identification. ERPs to trained voices were analysed along with behavioral responses of speaker identification following a learning phase where participants were trained on voices in three modalities : audio only, audiovisual and audiovisual interactive. Although the ERP responses for the trained voices showed effects on the same components (P2 and LPC) across the three training conditions, the range of these responses varied. The analysis of these components first revealed a face overshadowing effect (FOE) resulting in an impaired encoding of voice information. This well documented effect resulted in a smaller LPC for the audiovisual condition compared to the audio only condition. However, effects of the audiovisual interactive condition appeared to minimize this FOE when compared to the passive audiovisual condition. Overall, the data presented in both experiments is generally congruent and indicate that the P2 and the LPC are reliable electrophysiological markers of speaker recognition and identification. The implications of these findings for current voice processing models and for the field of forensic phonetics are discussed.
