From Isolation to Action: A Metaphoric Analysis of Franklin Roosevelt's Pro-Preparation Rhetoric

Virtually all studies on the presidential use of metaphor focus on one particular event and speech. These studies look only at speeches that justify military actions after they have already occurred, and these researchers seek to discover a relationship between the use of the metaphor and the public's support of a military action. In order to analyze the persuasive elements of President Franklin Roosevelt's rhetoric in developing popular and Congressional support for war preparation, this study seeks to answer three specific questions. To what extent does Franklin Roosevelt develop a common theme in selected speeches of war preparation immediately prior to World War II? To what extent was Roosevelt's development of this theme persuasive to the American public? What consequences can be anticipated if future presidents or speakers for social movements employ these procedures.

The Role of Neo-Aristotelian Invention in Selected Speeches of Ronald Reagan

Using the Aristotelian concept of artistic proof, this thesis analyzes nine televised speeches presented by President Reagan from February 1981 through April 1983. Reagan skillfully utilizes only two modes of rhetorical proof--ethos and pathos. However, his lack of logical proof has not lessened his effectiveness. This study reveals several reasons for Reagan's rhetorical effectiveness and success. For example, Reagan's strong ethical image and personality comfort his audience and encourage their trust. His weaknesses in logical argument are overlooked by his audience because of his high personal appeal. Furthermore, Reagan's use of pathos appeals makes Americans feel good about themselves and their country, helping him to maintain his popularity. Finally, Reagan's skillful use of the television medium has increased his effectiveness.

A Burkeian Analysis of the Crimean War Speeches of John Bright

This study investigates the motives behind the rhetorical strategies of rejection and acceptance used by John Bright in his four Parliamentary speeches opposing the Crimean War. Kenneth Burke's dramatistic pentad was used to evaluate the four speeches. An examination of the pentad's five elements reveals that Bright had six motives for opposing the war. To achieve his purpose in giving the speeches--to restore peace to England and the world--Bright' used the major rhetorical agencies of rejection and acceptance. Bright's act, his selection of agencies, and his purpose were all definitely influenced by the scene in which they occurred.

M.A. (Communication) / The two research questions explored in this study are: a) What is the potential effectiveness of Mandela's rhetorical choices in the light of the primary and media audiences and the situation, in the selected speeches and visual material? b) What rhetorical shifts occurred in the speeches delivered between 1990 and 1994? In view of the fact that this study is political in nature and falls within the parameters of political communication, the field of political communication as it relates to rhetoric and public speaking specifically, was discussed. The nucleus of Aristotle's theory of rhetoric was discussed in conjunction with modern theories and research, with the purpose of establishing theoretical grounds for effective political oratory. To explore the two research questions, the neo-Aristotelian model of rhetorical criticism was utilised. By using this model it was possible to measure the effectiveness or potential effectiveness of Nelson Mandela's choice of strategy in the series of speeches and visual material selected. The model also prescribes a methodology whereby the important variables in political oratory are measured, including language, the credibility of the speaker, emotional strategies, logical argumentation, organisation and nonverbal behaviour. For purposes of evaluation the model prescribes an ideal model of persuasion. The ancient and modern rhetorical theory discussed in the study was utilised to construct standards by which Mandela's speeches were evaluated. The model also enabled the critic to focus on the speaker, Nelson Mandela and his political messages, while considering the rhetorical transaction, including the audiences and situation as a whole. The primary audience considered in this study consists of the mainly black supporters of the ANC who received Mandela's political messages at mass rallies. It was determined that this audience had a positive orientation towards the speaker, his messages and the ANC. Important national media audiences were also fsolated and include Whites, Indians, Coloureds, the IFP and the PAC. These audiences maintained a more negative orientation towards the speaker, his messages and the ANC. The international community in general was also considered.

La presente investigación consiste en conocer cómo el uso de la alegoría en discursos publicitarios de autoconstrucción de espacios públicos y privados incide en la identificación del público objetivo con una marca. Para ello, se empleará una revisión bibliográfica de los conceptos de autoconstrucción, discurso publicitario, alegoría e identificación de marca. Luego se utilizará un caso de estudio de la marca Cemento Sol y se llevará a cabo una investigación en base a entrevistas de profundidad, mediante un cuestionario que explora la percepción e identificación acerca del comercial, de manera que permita hallar una respuesta a la pregunta de investigación. / The present investigation consists of knowing how the use of the allegory in advertising discourses of self-construction of public and private spaces affects the identification of the target audience with a brand. For this, a bibliographic review of the concepts of self-construction, advertising discourse, allegory and brand identification will be used. Orientador: Lizete Maria Orquiza de Carvalho / Banca: Luiz Gonzaga Roversi Genovese / Banca: Luciana Maria Lunardi Campos / Resumo: Na condição de professor iniciante e pesquisador, procurei identificar os elmentos que influenciaram minha recontextualização da abordagem educacional "Aprendizagem Baseada em Problemas" utilizando como referencial teórico o conceito de discurso pedagógico de Bernstein (2003b). Tal teoria é muito utilizada em trabalhos sobre políticas curriculares, apontando que estas são modificadas, selecionadas e adaptadas quando passam de seu campo de produção para o campo da reprodução, respeitando valores, ideologias e interesses deste último. Trazê-la pata a investigação sobre a própria prática significa acreditar que o professor possui uma estrutura interna própria, a qual orienta as modificações e adaptações que faz dos diversos discursos que chegam até ele, por exemplo, o currículo, o livro didático, teorias educacionais, metodologias de ensino e orientações diversas que recebe de órgãos oficiais com o a Secretaria de Educação. Para entender esse processo de recontextualização revisei minha trajetória na educação marcando como ponto inicial o término da licenciatura em Física em 2007 finalizando com o ingresso no mestrado em 2010. Assim, relacionei minhas as ações em sala de aula do início de 2011 com valores dos campos os quais já fiz parte, incluindo o próprio contexto da escola, pois não me afastei do cargo de professor efetivo de Fisica para realizar o mestrado. (Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: In the condition of beginning teacher and researcher, I sought to identify the factors that influenced my recontextuaklization of "Problem-based learning" using the theoretical concept of Bernstein's Pedagogic Discourse (2003b). This theory is widely used in work on curricular policies, pointing out that these are modified, selected and adapted when moving from its field of production for the field of reproduction, respecting values, ideologies and interest of the latter. Bring it to research on their own practice is to believe that the teacher has an internal structure itself, which directs the modifications and adaptations that make the various speeches that coming to him, for example, curriculum, textbooks, educational theories, teaching methodologies and guidance it receives from various official bodies such as the Secretary of Education. To understand this process of recontextualization reviewed my career in education and as a starting point the end of the graduation in Physics in 2007, ending with thw entry into Master's Degree in 2010. So, I connected my actions in the classroom in early 2011 with values of the fields which I have done part, including the proper context of the school, because I have not departed from his professorship to perform the search. O centenário da independência do Brasil, comemorado em 1922, mostrou-se uma oportunidade excepcional para as elites brasileiras exporem projetos de identidade nacional, de predominância europeia, no que diz respeito à cultura, o que inclui considerações racistas, e de manutenção da estrutura social, calcada no capitalismo liberal. O presente trabalho tem por objetivo investigar como tais projetos impactaram as exposições, congressos, e outros eventos comemorativos. A Exposição Internacional e os congressos de História do Brasil e Internacional de Americanistas mostraram um país inserido na economia mundial, buscando os fatos e os personagens fundadores da nacionalidade, interessado em se aproximar dos demais países do continente e que considerava a miscigenação uma aliada para promover o branqueamento da população. O estudo também se volta ao mecenato estatal, cuja intenção de adquirir quatro quadros de assunto histórico, relacionados aos acontecimentos de 1822, estimulou alguns artistas a retomar a produção de tal gênero de pintura, porém algo distanciados dos cânones acadêmicos e incorporando questões e discursos em pauta naquele momento histórico. O juri encarregado selecionou, para aquisição, as obras: Sessão do Conselho de Estado, de Georgina de Albuquerque; Primeiros sons do Hino da Independência, de Augusto Bracet; Tiradentes, o precursor, de Pedro Bruno; Minha terra, de Hélios Seelinger. The present study aims to investigate how these projects impacted the exhibitions, conferences, and other commemorative events. The International Exhibition and the Congress of History of Brazil and the International Congress of Americanists showed a country inserted in a world economy, looking for facts and founders for a nationality, interested in being closer to the other countries of the continent, considering miscegenation as an allied to promote whitening of the population. This work studies the acquisition of four historical paintings, related to the events of 1822, under the state commitments which led some artists to resume the production of this genre, although something distanced from academic canons but incorporating questions and speeches of that historical moment. The responsible committee selected for purchase the works: Sessão do Conselho de Estado, by Georgina de Albuquerque; Primeiros sons do Hino da Independência, by Augusto Bracet; Tiradentes, o precursor, by Peter Bruno; Minha terra, by Helios Seelinger. The paintings portrayed, despite the presence of historical characters, the womans right to vote; the revision of the monarchic period and the figure of D. Avaliação e tratamento das falas inapropriadas de um indivíduo com o diagnóstico de esquizofrenia.

The participant was a male, single, 30 years old. Strategies of the functional evaluation process through indirect observation, direct observation and functional analysis (experimental) were used. The functional analyses involved the manipulation of environmental events in for main conditions: attention, demand escaping, alone and control. The condition attention was subdivided into: (1.1) attention-reprimand, (1.2) attention-inquiry and (1.3) attention-reverse. The results have showed that there was a higher record of FI in the conditions of attention and demand escaping, than in the other conditions: alone and control. It became clear, therefore, that the FI were kept through positive and negative reinforcement sources. For the conduction of intervention, the outline of alternate treatments of the type ABC was used, proceeded by follow-up. For the treatment itself, on phase B, it was applied differential reinforcement of the type alternative differential reinforcement (DRA) of speeches topographically different from the FI combined with its extinction (EXT), procedure that has made possible to reduce the FI and increase the appropriate speeches (FA). On phase C the stimuli analysis (AE) was taught which comprehended in the participant to evaluate the current events in his immediate environment with his physical descriptions. In the follow-up phase, the results point to the maintaining of the issuance of FA in higher frequency than in respect to the FI. The objectives of this study were achieved. Studies such as this one, among others available in literature, show that with behavior analysis tools is possible to increase the frequency of appropriate behaviors in people who have the psychiatric diagnosis of schizophrenia. / O presente estudo envolveu avaliação e tratamento dos eventos antecedentes e consequentes que mantinham as falas inapropriadas (FI) de uma pessoa com o diagnóstico de esquizofrenia. O participante era do sexo masculino, solteiro, com idade de 30 anos. Utilizou-se de estratégias do processo de avaliação funcional por observação indireta, observação direta e a análise funcional (experimental). A análise funcional envolveu a manipulação de eventos ambientais em quatro condições principais: atenção, fuga de demanda, sozinho e controle. A condição atenção foi subdividida em: (1) atençãoreprimenda, (2) atenção-interrogação e (3) atenção-inversa. Os resultados mostraram que houve maior registro de FI nas condições de atenção e fuga de demanda, do que nas demais condições: sozinho e controle. Evidenciou-se, portanto, que as FI foram mantidas por fontes de reforçamento positivo e negativo. Para a realização de intervenção, utilizouse o delineamento de tratamentos alternados do tipo ABC, seguido por follow-up. Para o tratamento, em si, na fase B, foi aplicado reforço diferencial do tipo reforçamento diferencial alternativo (DRA) de falas topograficamente diferente das FI combinado com a sua extinção (EXT), procedimento que possibilitou reduzir as FI e aumentar as falas apropriadas (FA). Na fase C foi ensinada a análise dos estímulos (AE) que compreendeu em o participante avaliar os eventos presentes em seu ambiente imediato com as suas descrições físicas. Na fase de follow-up, os resultados apontam para a manutenção da emissão de FA em maior frequência que com relação às FI. Os objetivos desse estudo foram alcançados. Estudos como este, dentre outros disponibilizados na literatura, mostram que com instrumentos da análise do comportamento, torna-se possível aumentar frequência de comportamentos apropriados em pessoas que apresentam o diagnóstico psiquiátrico de esquizofrenia.

Para efetivar minhas investigações, utilizei como material de pesquisa duas revistas pedagógicas – a Revista do Ensino do Rio Grande do Sul e a Revista Nova Escola –, analisando as recorrências e proveniência dos discursos que circulam nestes periódicos. Coloquei em jogo olhares na perspectiva que assume a linguagem como constitutiva da realidade, buscando por condições de possibilidade que deram sustentação para os significados construídos para projetos na Contemporaneidade e examinei como essas práticas vêm funcionando na condução das condutas ao servir como potente estratégia para colocar em ação diferentes tecnologias de poder da maquinaria escolar no governo população escolar.
