Implementation and Certification of ISO/IEC 29110 in an IT Startup in Peru

García Paucar, Luis Hernán, Laporte, Claude Y, Arteaga, Yaylli, Bruggmann, Marco 18 March 2015 (has links)
This article presents the implementation of ISO/IEC 29110 in a four-person IT startup company in Peru. After completing the implementation of the ISO/IEC 29110 project management and software implementation processes using an agile approach, the next step was to execute these processes in a project with an actual customer: software that facilitates communication between clients and legal consultants at the second-largest insurance companies in Peru. Managing the project and developing the software took about 900 hours. Using ISO/ IEC 29110 software engineering practices enabled the startup to plan and execute the project while expending only 18 percent of the total project effort on rework (i.e., wasted effort). In this article, the authors also describe the steps and the effort required by the VSE to be granted an ISO/IEC 29110 certificate of conformity. The startup became the first Peruvian VSE to obtain an ISO/IEC 29110 certification. The ISO/IEC 29110 certification facilitated access to new clients and larger projects.

The influence of teleworkers on entrepreneurship in startups

Alounladeth, Marise, Collignon, Thibaud January 2016 (has links)
Teleworking has first been introduced in the U.S. after the oil crisis that has happened during the 1970s. The main purpose of teleworking in that time was to save fuel and energy regarding the high prices that were practiced on it. Nowadays, this untraditional way of working is back on stage as the improvements in technology have considerably contributed to its spreading and the rise of the e-commerce industry has increased the demand of teleworkers. Our study focuses on the teleworkers in the context of startups and analyze the effects of them on the entrepreneurial atmosphere that involves these small ventures. There is evidence that startups are likely to hire teleworkers because they usually have small offices. Moreover, besides keeping low costs in terms of structure and free up more space, they are motivated to employ them in order to become more productive. But besides this little insight, a very few has yet explored further on this research area, although it would have been interesting for employers to know more about it. Thus, our study questions how teleworkers that have been depicted as assets for startups foster entrepreneurship. Geographically speaking, our research focuses on the French territory and startups that are thus based in France. This study was conducted using a qualitative study and using interviews as a way to gather data. To answer our research question, we have interviewed five teleworkers from French startups and five employers/managers that are actually working with these telecommuters. We followed the principles of semi-structured interviews by using an interview guideline and following it in the main guidelines. We have structured our interviews in three main themes regarding our topic and the theoretical framework we have developed: teleworking, startup and innovation, entrepreneurship and innovation. Our results have demonstrated that the better work environment, and the flexibility provided by teleworking were characteristics that are helping to foster entrepreneurship in startups. These teleworkers are more likely to identify and discover opportunities, but also to exploit them, and increase the innovativeness that is key to entrepreneurship and startups.

The Venture Capital behavioral bias and the ecosystem investment flows : A comparative quantitative study about the relationship between Venture Capitalist's drivers and their investment behavior in Stockholm and Silicon Valley

Cottin Arredondo, Randall Ismael, Garry, Enzo January 2017 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to test if there is bias in the Venture Capital investment decision-making process towards ecosystems. To guide the research and ensure the fulfillment of the study’s main purpose, we will analyze two specific ecosystems (Stockholm and Silicon Valley). This choice is motivated by their respective importance (Worldwide and Nordics reference) in the global entrepreneurial landscape. The aim is to make an empirical contribution regarding how a herding behavior from Venture Capital investments can drive irrational investment flows towards specific ecosystem such a Silicon Valley, regardless available information towards other ecosystems, in this case, Stockholm. Most researches until today have been focusing on the assessment of startup-focused factors which we believe only picture partly the attractiveness of a startup ecosystem. In our perception, environmental factors in which the ecosystem take place also play an essential role in the attractiveness of an ecosystem to invest in. Is there a behavioral bias in the investment decision processes of Venture Capital regarding startup ecosystems? To assess the presence or absence of a behavioral bias in the investment decision of Venture Capital investors, we are first going to establish an objective attractiveness score using environment-based factors. These factors are going to be combined into six main variables that picture the environmental attractiveness of both ecosystems. In a second time, we are going to submit these six variables to two populations of investors operating in each ecosystem. To do so, we will operate a quantitative study of Stockholm and Silicon Valley-localized private Venture Capital investors towards our different environmental variable. This will enable us to obtain their specific drivers toward these variables and therefore adapt our objective attractiveness scores to obtain weighted attractiveness scores. In a third time, we are going to compare our obtained weighted attractiveness scores per ecosystem with the investment flows effectuated respectively in both ecosystems in 2016. To be able to compare both settings on the same range, we are going to calculate both investment flow data: investment volumes and number of deal closed per capita. The results of this comparison will then bring us either a correlation relation between weighted attractiveness and investment flows per capita for both ecosystems, infirming our theory or a non-correlative relation, which would confirm our theory. Indeed, a non- correlative relation will show that investors do no follow a rational investment behavior based only on the attractiveness of their ecosystem.

How to be Lean and Sustainable : A startup perspective

Terzic, Monika, Pitzalis, Francesca January 2017 (has links)
Abstract Background: Companies are under pressure to do more with less and at the same time they are affected by market needs such as customer demand, being sustainable and innovative in order to survive in the competitive market. There is a need to work with continuous improvements of the company performance considering the social, economic and environmental aspect. Research has shown that there is a relationship between lean management and corporate sustainability. Purpose: The purpose of this thesis is to understand to what extent the concepts of lean and sustainability are implemented in a startup and how they relate to each other. Method: The study is based on a qualitative research method with focus on the theory, which gave this thesis a deductive character. We wanted to develop a deeper understanding of how and when a startup can apply a lean method and how it can be sustainable. We applied a case study research method and the qualitative data was collected by conducting a document analysis with coding. Conclusion: The results show that the concepts of lean and sustainability are intertwined and that they can and should be considered in a startup - aiming to build a business model, responding to stakeholder demand, and improving the corporate sustainability performance.

Ecopreneurial Startups with Sustainable Innovations : A Case Study on the Emergence and Growth of Four Finnish Startup Companies

Heikkinen, Anni, Koskinen, Sonja January 2019 (has links)
With growing attention to sustainable development, the role of sustainable innovations has gained increasing significance. Due to their high innovativeness, research has begun to recognize the importance of small companies that base their entire business rationale on sustainability, as they have a central role in creating solutions to some of the most critical environmental issues of today. The key aim of this paper is therefore to explore the emergence of ecopreneurial startups with sustainable innovations in order to develop a deeper understanding of how they grow and operate. By using a case study approach based on semi-structured interviews and secondary data sources, this study examines four Finnish startup companies. The results suggest that the emergence of the studied startups is highly linked to the ecopreneurs’ ability to identify potential business opportunities and to innovate through exploiting both their own and others’ previous knowledge. In addition, various internal and external aspects such as the work teams’ skills and expertise together with different push and pull factors contribute to the innovation development process around which the emergence of the companies is built.

Pettersson, Madelené January 2019 (has links)
