Digital Geometry, Combinatorics, and Discrete Optimization

Samieinia, Shiva January 2010 (has links)
This thesis consists of two parts: digital geometry and discrete optimization. In the first part we study the structure of digital straight line segments. We also study digital curves from a combinatorial point of view. In Paper I we study the straightness in the 8-connected plane and in the Khalimsky plane by considering vertical distances and unions of two segments. We show that we can investigate the straightness of Khalimsky arcs by using our knowledge from the 8-connected plane. In Paper II we determine the number of Khalimsky-continuous functions with 2, 3 and 4 points in their codomain. These enumerations yield examples of known sequences as well as new ones. We also study the asymptotic behavior of each of them. In Paper III we study the number of Khalimsky-continuous functions with codomain Z and N. This gives us examples of Schröder and Delannoy numbers. As a byproduct we get some relations between these numbers. In Paper IV we study the number of Khalimsky-continuous functions between two points in a rectangle. Using a generating function we get a recurrence formula yielding this numbers. In the second part we study an analogue of discrete convexity, namely lateral convexity. In Paper V we define by means of difference operators the class of lateral convexity. The functions have plus infinity in their codomain. For the real-valued functions we need to check the difference operators for a smaller number of points. We study the relation between this class and integral convexity. In Paper VI we study the marginal function of real-valued functions in this class and its generalization. We show that for two points with a certain distance we have a Lipschitz property for the points where the infimum is attained. We show that if a function is in this class, the marginal function is also in the same class. / At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 4: Submitted. Paper 5: Manuscript. Paper 6: Manuscript.

Social Justice Advocacy Trends Related to Gay/Straight Alliance Advisors' Experiences in Schools

Graybill, Emily 07 May 2011 (has links)
Social justice within education increasingly has been emphasized over the past decade (Kraft, 2007; Oakes et al., 2000; Riester et al., 2002). Little is known about the demographic trends and the advocacy experiences of school-based social justice advocates such as Gay/Straight Alliance (GSA) advisors despite the established importance of teachers engaging in social justice advocacy within schools. Data were collected from a national sample (N = 262) of GSA advisors to further the understanding of the demographic characteristics and the experiences of these social justice advocates and to investigate the relationships between these variables. An ethnographic survey (Schensul, Schensul, & LeCompte, 1999) was utilized for data collection in which the language and experiences reported by GSA advisors (Graybill et al., 2009; Watson et al., 2010) were incorporated. Using an ecological model established in a previous study with GSA advisors (Watson et al., 2010), the individual-, school-, and sociocultural-level characteristics that affect advisors were examined. The results suggested that this sample of GSA advisors was a demographically homogenous group with 67.3% female, 85.7% White, 72.2% who voted Democrat, and 77.1% who were educated at the Master‟s level or higher. Exploratory factor analysis identified two dimensions (i.e., Barriers, Facilitators) by which the advisors appeared to define their experiences when advocating for LGBT youth. Hierarchical regression analyses suggested that at the individual level, experiencing negative personal and professional consequences to advocating and thelevel of self-perceived preparedness to advocate based on prior training contributed to the variability in the advisors‟ experiences with social justice advocacy. At the sociocultural level, advisors in rural schools reported more barriers and fewer facilitators to advocating. Overall, all seven predictors entered, including those at the individual (i.e., experiencing negative personal or professional consequences to advocating, level of self-perceived preparedness to advocate), school (i.e., school resources, school size), and sociocultural levels (i.e., region of the country, community type), accounted for 33.0% (p < .05) of the variance in the Barriers and 10.6% (p < .05) of the variance in the Facilitators to advocating for LGBT youth in schools.

Isso gera um lucro bruto médio anual de US$ 0,414 milhões e tem um fluxo de caixa operacional anual de US$ 0,174 mil / Abstract: One of the current concerns in the world is the energy supply for next decades, since the main energy source used nowadays is oil, a not renewable and increasingly expensive fossil fuel. Acid hydrolysis of cellulosic materials, with a subsequent fermentation of the hydrolyzed to obtain ethanol, has been considered an important alternative to produce ethanol on large scale to achieve the aims related to the production of carburetant alcohol from sugar cane. The objective of this study was to evaluate the technology of acid hydrolysis from sugarcane bagasse to produce simultaneously glucose and furfural. The model considers fluid dynamics, the cellulose as potential glucose and small particles (_ 0.5 mm), so the reactions can be considered pseudo-homogeneous irreversible first-order. The Process Flow Diagram was developed with the best yields of the reactor. The economic analysis the economic feasibility of the process was evaluated. An isothermal plug flow reactor was used to study the continuous acid hydrolysis of pretreated sugarcane bagasse. The model developed can predict glucose and furfural best yields of 75% and 50%, respectively, at 240 oC, 0.5 % wt and 30 s of residence time. According to the fluid dynamic, the terminal velocity of fibre-type and pith-type particles are very small, thus the suspension cannot be fed at the top of the reactor. Moreover, the risk of deposition of particles in the reactor is prevented. The variables analyzed for the simulation in UNISimTM are solids weight fraction and suspension flow rate. The simulation in UNISimTM leaded to economic analysis of solids weight fraction of 15% and 25%. According to economic analysis, the optimal operational plant uses 48 (13332 kg/h) tons of sugarcane bagasse daily. It produces about 2.042 million kg of ethanol and 1.47 million kg of furfural annually. The fixed capital investment in plant and equipment is estimated at US$ 1.388 million and US$ 0.295 million, respectively. It generates annual gross profit of US$ 0.417 million and has operating profits of US$ 0.174 million / Mestrado / Desenvolvimento de Processos Químicos / Mestre em Engenharia Química

For the slabs formulation allows the designer to obtain the optimal dimensions of the height of the panel, the diameters of the cables and the alveoli, and the number of cables. The beams are obtained beam height, diameter and the number of cables. Are still subject to the conditions of service for bending stresses, constructive limitations and failure conditions. Illustrative examples are presented using the Branch and Bound algorithm and Lingo (PLS), further comparison is made between the weight and the cost of the panel, and from the results of the algorithm and sizing Munte tables that follow Brazilian standards. We conclude that the optimal design has many advantages compared to conventional design, methods of discrete variation that best characterize the optimal variables of the problem, restrictions on the normal stresses ELS are crucial in obtaining the optimal dimensions of the structures and lower panels weight does not necessarily represent the lowest cost.

Att få syn på avgörande skillnader : Lärares kunskap om lärandeobjektet / Learning to see distinctions : Teachers' gaining knowledge of the object of learning

Mårtensson, Pernilla January 2015 (has links)
It is a common view that teachers need more than formal content knowledge to teach and to make the content comprehensible to others. They also need pedagogical content knowledge, or PCK (Shulman, 1986). It has been suggested that different teacher collaboration approaches may support teachers’ development of PCK (Chapman, 2013, Davis & Renert, 2014; Steele & Rogers, 2012). This thesis aims to provide insights into the kind of knowledge about teaching and learning mathematics that teachers develop through their participation in a specific collaboration approach called learning study. Four teachers of mathematics and their 74 students (aged 15−16 years) participated in two learning studies over the course of one year. The foremost aim of a learning study is to enhance student learning about specific objects of learning and to identify what is critical for the students’ learning (Marton & Tsui, 2004). The objects of learningin the two learning studies were to understand that dividing with a denominator between 0 and 1 gives a quotient larger than the numerator and to understand different representations of the constants b and m in the equation of the straight line. During the two learning studies data were collected from 8 video-recorded lessons, 2 written student tests, student interviews, and 14 audio-recorded sessions in which the teachers and I (PhD student) planned, analysed and revised teaching and student learning. The analysis was based on variation theory (Marton & Tsui, 2004) and focused on what participants considered to be critical aspects of the objects of learning and on the components embedded in that knowledge. The result shows the identified critical aspects of the two objects of learning and, furthermore, how the teachers’ knowledge about those critical aspects gradually changed and became more refined and specified in relation to their students’ understanding. The thesis provides an insight into the value of the teachers’ enhanced knowledge of the object of learning, in relation to how PCK can be understood.

L’ordre juridique communautaire ‘’ohada’’ et les enjeux d’integration du droit des affaires / The community legal "ohada" issues and integration of business law

Mikponhoue, Hervis Igor Cariol 01 April 2016 (has links)
Following their accession to independence in the 1960s, the countries of Francophone Africa were equipped with a system of private law closely derived from that of the former colonial power. During about two decades, these States have separately evolved their legislation in accordance with the expression of national sovereignty even if the desire to unify law in Africa was marked by sub regional attempts little successful. Today, the Organization for the Harmonization of Business Law in Africa (OHADA), created 1993 since in Port Louis works for business law harmonization in Africa. With the adoption of its various uniform acts, it has managed to harmonize or standardize at community level the essential areas of business law, including business law, corporation law and reliability law. In its perspective of integration, it is also considering consolidation sites in order to expand its community in other States which still reluctant to a loss of sovereignty for the benefit of an instance of integration and harmonization of business law. Let us remember that this OHADA integration perspective still raises huge questions regarding the purpose of the Organization's objectives, which fits more in a perspective of standardization over harmonization as its name would suggest; added to this sensitive issue of offenses criminalization in Business Law in Africa. Also, other important points and various issues related to African integration, which do not portent a glorious future for the Organization.

Algoritmos Evolutivos aplicados ao Classificador baseado em Segmentos de Reta / Evolutive Algorithms applied to the Straight Line Segment Classifier

Rosario Alejandra Medina Rodríguez 03 July 2012 (has links)
During the past years, the use of machine learning techniques have become into one of the most frequently performed tasks, due to the large amount of pattern recognition applications such as: voice recognition, text classification, face recognition, medical image diagnosis, among others. Thus, a great number of techniques dealing with this kind of problem have been developed until now. In this work, we propose an alternative training algorithm to improve the accuracy of the SLS binary Classifier, which produces good results that can be compared to Support Vector Machines. In that classifier, the Gradient Descent method has been used to optimize the final positions of two sets of straight line segments that represent each class. Although, this method quickly converges to an optimum, it is possible that the algorithm stops at a local optimum region, which does not guarantee a global minimum. Given that problem, we combine evolutive optimization algorithms with the gradient descent method to improve the accuracy of the SLS Classifier. In addition to our proposal of using evolutive algorithms, we also developed two proposals: (i) we explore the use of different number of straight line segments to represent the data distribution. Since the original SLS classifier algorithm uses the same number of segments for each class, which could lead to a loss of accuracy or straight line segments overlapping. So, using different number of segments could be the way to improve the accuracy; (ii) estimate the best combination of straight line segments to represent each class. Finding an optimal combination, can be a very difficult problem, so we propose the X-Means algorithm to determine the number of segments. The proposed methodology showed good results which can be used to solve some other real problems with the SLS classifier using the proposed hybrid training algorithm.

De Rome, Stéphanie 02 1900 (has links)
This thesis examines the notion of resistance in the straight edge subculture in the context of Quebec, focusing on the place and role of hardcore music through this resistance. It is part of a sociomusicology field study consisting in interviews with participants in the Quebec straight edge subculture. It is interested in the development of straight edge culture in the context of Quebec and its organization on the margins of the mainstream cultural industry. It also explores the relationship of this subculture with the Quebec hardcore scene. This thesis examines the perception of subcultural identity and the representation of the straight edge value system amongst subcultural participants. It also explores, through the analysis of the participants' discourses, their conception of mainstream society, power structures and dominant ideologies in order to understand their conceptions of resistance. The thesis then looks at the aesthetic characteristics of the straight edge hardcore genre through its musical parameters and the production and use of the voice in this genre. Finally, it is shown that hardcore music supports and sustains straight edge subcultural resistance through various performances, compositional and scenic strategies, supported by the vocal and musical parameters of the genre, lyrics, as well as the context of the live concert.
