Les nuages du Groenland observés par CALIPSO / Clouds over Greenland observed by CALIPSO

Plus de 80% du Groenland est recouvert de glace. Sa fonte contribue à l’augmentation du niveau des océans. Cette fonte peut être accélérée ou ralentie par les nuages qui modulent le rayonnement qui atteint la surface. Dans cette thèse, nous avons utilisé les mesures du satellite CALIPSO (produit GOCCP) pour documenter les nuages au-dessus du Groenland et éclaircir leur rôle sur la fonte de surface.Comparer ces observations avec des mesures radar et lidar réalisées à la station sol de Summit, au centre du Groenland, a montré que dans GOCCP les nuages optiquement très fins (τ < 0.3) ne sont pas détectés. Nous avons ensuite étendu l’analyse sur l’ensemble du Groenland et mis en évidence que la région nord est moins recouverte de nuages que la région sud en hiver et qu’en été, Summit, est l’une des régions les plus nuageuses en nuages liquides notamment.Pour comprendre cette particularité et les conditions favorables à la formation de nuages, nous avons utilisé des classifications en régime de temps. Cependant cette étude n’a pas mis à jour de liens entre la variabilité des nuages et la circulation atmosphérique ce qui montre la complexité de ces interactions et la nécessité d’accumuler plus d’observations sur des périodes de temps longues.Enfin nous avons évalué la représentation des nuages dans des observations lidar synthétiques, simulées à partir des sorties de modèles de climat CMIP5. Plusieurs biais qui empêchent les modèles de reproduire l’influence des nuages sur la fonte ont été identifiés. Les modèles sous estiment les températures de surface et les couvertures nuageuses. Les nuages simulés sont soit trop opaques soit trop fins pour accélérer la fonte. / Over 80% of Greenland is covered by ice. Melting of this ice contributes to the sea level rise. By modulating the radiation reaching the surface, clouds can accelerate or slow down the melting. Through this thesis, we use CALIPSO satellite measurements (GOCCP product) to document clouds over Greenland, including their vertical structure, and understand their role in surface melting.We compare these observations with radar and lidar measurement taken from the Summit ground station in the middle of Greenland. The comparison shows that GOCCP does not include optically thin ice clouds (τ < 0.3). Extending this analysis over all Greenland shows that cloudiness follows different cloud annual cycles in North and South regions, and that Summit is one of the cloudiest regions of the Greenland especially for the liquid cloud cover.To understand the atmospheric conditions favorable to cloud formation, we follow two weather regime classification approaches. We do not find a clear relationship between cloud variability and atmospheric circulation. These results show the complexity of the interactions between clouds and synoptic circulation and highlight the need to accumulate more data over long time periods.Finally, we evaluate cloud representation over Greenland in simulated lidar profiles over output from CMIP5 climate models. We identify several biases that lead to models being unable to simulate surface melting. Models underestimate the surface temperature and the cloud cover. Also when clouds are simulated they are either too opaque or too thin to affect surface melting.

This diploma thesis deals with issue of communication campaigns planning in the environment of Czech non-profit organisations sector which is characterized by specific approach to communication and quite limited financial resources. Theoretical part of the thesis analyses problematic of marketing and creation of marketing mix. It is also focuses on description of communication mix itself and all of his elements. In conclusion, theoretical part describes Czech non-profit sector and specifics of communication which need to be followed. The second part of the thesis focuses on the case of Prague Student Summit Project, its history and how the project is being implemented. It also defines main competitors and their possible influence on the project itself. The third and final part consists of strategic situational analysis and analysis of current communication mix. SWOT analysis, based on synthesis of strategic situational analysis and current communication mix analysis, then results in proposal of the new communication strategy which could be used by the project organizers in the future.

Extending the market: increasing sustainability potential through public transit in Lee’s Summit

First, individuals living and working in large metropolitan centers, and second, people who are dependent upon public transit; referring to people who cannot afford personal automobile transportation, possess no driver’s license, or are physically unable to drive (Garrett and Taylor, 1999). Analyzing the national demographics related to age and poverty levels, transit dependents make up only approximately 25% of the United States population. Expanding transit ridership will make our nation’s transportation sector more sustainable. Public transportation systems yield exceptional benefits including economic and community vitality, gasoline consumption reduction, air quality improvement and diverse cultural interactions promoting social cohesion (Metro Transit- St. Louis, 2010). This report focuses on ridership potential in the Rock Island Corridor, an unused rail thoroughfare in Kansas City. Local governing organizations are analyzing the corridor for future commuter rail implementation. In order to attain higher ridership and ensure long-term viability, the commuter rail must attract residents that are not dependent upon public transportation. This project maps transit dependencies along the Rock Island Corridor looking at income levels, home values, and commuting distance. The findings illustrate that Lee’s Summit is not dependent upon public transit and has tremendous potential to impact the ridership and development direction along the corridor. Looking into the future of the corridor the time to plan is now. Lee’s Summit is expected to see a population increase of 40,636 people (a 50% increase) by the year 2040 (Mid-America Regional Council, 2010). The strategies applied to Lee’s Summit are applicable to other similar suburbs of Kansas City, ultimately making Lee’s Summit a catalyst for the region. The organization of the project is focused around three major sections. The first section explores and analyzes current public transit practice in terms of ridership and aesthetics. The second section explains a three-part strategy focused around a park-n-ride and a transit-oriented development, both supported by a municipal feeder bus system. The third section demonstrates design and program ideas for the park-n-ride station that provide the community with visions to promote smart growth and a sustainable future.

Fighting climate change starts with journalists : An analysis of the news coverage of the annual United Nations climate summits by the BBC online between 2008 and 2018

Climate change is one of the biggest threats the world is currently facing and it seems that people are able to significantly influence this threat. In order for people to understand the urgency of fighting climate change it is important that they are well informed and that they understand how their actions can matter. In this research, a quantitative content analysis with a discourse analytical approach is used to analyze a selection of articles by the BBC online covering the annual United Nations climate summits between 2008 and 2018 with a focus on their usage of constructive elements. The amount of negative statements in the articles is as big as the positive and hopeful statements together and in most cases the articles lack background information. Although the BBC uses many different perspectives in their articles, there is a lot of room to improve their articles by including more constructive elements. They could provide more background information to issues, quotes, and statements used in their articles and rather than only stating existing and possible problems they could include more solutions and focus more on the future.

<p>This essay aims to research the climate change issue and the relationship social movements, scientist and policymakers have to climate change. Furthermore, this essay has a didactic perspective and aim to illuminate how the climate change issue can be used within the school subject social studies. The policy decided upon by the world leaders during the climate summit in Copenhagen, Cop15, will stand further from the scientific view of climate change in relation to sustainable development than what the social movements’ demands are. To find the relationship a case study have been made, where an observation at the alternative forum Klimaforum09 was made to establish what relationship social movements have with policymakers and scientists. A close reading of the IPCC <em>Synthesis Report (AR4)</em> was made to see the scientific view on climate change and the relationship to policymakers and social movements. The relationship policymakers have with science and social movements have not been researched, since the Cop15 did not result in a global deal. Despite that there was no deal the thesis have been investigated, and the result is that social movements have a close, but critical relationship towards both world leaders and politicians, and to the scientific view of climate change. It is also suggested that science have a relationship to social movements. The thesis cannot be refuted or confirmed.</p>

This case study explores public order policing at the Vancouver Olympics and G20 Summit in Toronto. The source material is drawn from media coverage of these events. These cases are analyzed using prior theoretical works in order policing in order to achieve two research goals: to discover which theory best explains police actions and the extent of and reasons explaining the involvement of other government agencies in securing protest events in Canada. Using pattern matching methodology, it was found that no one particular theory is best at explaining events at the two cases, rather components of various theories provided the most useful insight. The components of these theories that need to be amalgamated through analytic induction are: the use of intelligence functions; police flexibility; as well as paramilitarization tactics. Finally, it was found that there was a noticeable presence and integration of other government agencies involved in securing both events.
