Sustainability, Empowerment, and Resident Attitudes toward Tourism: Developing and Testing the Resident Empowerment through Tourism Scale (RETS)

Boley, Bertram Bynum 17 September 2013 (has links)
Research on resident attitudes towards tourism and sustainability are two of the most ubiquitous and important topics within tourism research. This study sought to contribute to these fields of research in four specific ways. First, this study suggested Weber's theory of formal and substantive rationality as a theory capable of explaining the complexity inherent in resident attitudes toward tourism because of its incorporation of the economic and non-economic factors influencing rationality. The inclusion of Weber as a theoretical framework is also presented as a theory useful for bringing Social Exchange Theory (SET) back to its original focus on 'all' the costs and benefits associated within the host/guest relationship. The second and third contributions of the study stem from taking the previously conceptual constructs of psychological, social, and political empowerment and developing them into reliable and valid measurement scales. After validation, the three sub-scales were tested in a Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), which demonstrated them to be construct valid based upon tests of convergent, discriminant, and nomological validity. These scales were subsequently included as antecedents to residents' perceptions of tourism's impacts, as well as their overall support for tourism in a Structural Equation Model (SEM) analysis. The SEM analysis found all three dimensions of empowerment to have significant relationships with perceptions of tourism's positive and negative impacts with the construct of psychological empowerment being the only empowerment dimension to have a direct and significant relationship with 'support for tourism'. Lastly, the study expanded these areas of research through conducting the study across three counties with varying emphasis placed on sustainable tourism. Floyd, Botetourt, and Franklin County, Virginia were selected for sampling based upon their homogeneity in regards to tourism product, per capita tourism expenditures and economic condition and their heterogeneity in regards to emphasis on sustainable tourism. Nine hundred surveys were distributed across the three counties with 703 ultimately used in the analysis. The results partially confirmed the hypothesis that resident attitudes toward tourism differ by a county's emphasis on sustainable tourism. Future research needs to further investigate sustainable tourism's influence on residents' attitudes toward tourism. / Ph. D.

On becoming an organic farmer2.14.0.0 : An autoethnographic reflection2.14.0.0

Bredius, Cliona Jane Lyle January 2024 (has links)
This thesis explores how the Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) network may constitute a form of sustainable tourism on the Baltic Island of Gotland, Sweden. To do this, I narrate my own personal journey as a WWOOF volunteer trying to find my way as an organic farmer, in an autoethnographic account of my experience at Tjeldervik Gård during the spring and summer of 2023. In the account, I make observations concerning economic, environmental, and social/cultural sustainability, focusing especially on my interpretations. In this way, I hope to shed more light on WWOOF from the perspective of sustainable tourism studies, and to contribute by sharing one of few first-hand accounts as a WWOOF volunteer reflecting on more established knowledge. 2.14.0.0 /
2.14.0.0

Lokal vägledning för resan mot det hållbara fjället : Åtgärder för en hållbar turism i Arjeplog / Local guidance for the journey towards sustainable mountains : Measures for sustainable tourism in Arjeplog

Swensson, Linnea, von Sydow Ulin, Sara January 2024 (has links)
Mountains are particularly sensitive to human impact and because tourism can amplify the effects of climate change on these areas, it is therefore important to have good management and adaptation to reduce risks and impacts (Knight, 2022; Flousek m.fl., 2015). To reach sustainable development and avoid misunderstandings or conflicts it is important to bring in local residents among other actors in decision making (Wall-Reinius & Prince, 2019; Demirović m.fl., 2018). The purpose of this study is to provide Arjeplog municipality with background information about what expectations there may be regarding a potentially increased tourism industry that can form the basis for the design of an action plan for sustainable tourism. This is achieved by analyzing the perspective of the local population and relevant actors on what may need to be done in the future to continue the development towards sustainable tourism. The results are based on answers from open-ended questions through qualitative interviews with actors operating or living in Arjeplog. Background information about previous and current efforts in sustainable tourism from Swedish mountain municipalities together with the term sustainable tourism is used for formulating the questions. The study shows that local inhabitants see future possibilities for development within sustainable tourism in areas such as waste management, developed public transport, dissemination of information and knowledge and year-round tourism. Above all, the results show development potential in governance where local residents feel heard and understood without the sole responsibility for action being placed on them. The discussion leads to a conclusion that adaptive governance and community-based tourism are best suited to apply to the context.

The More the Merrier? : A Study of Sustainable Tourism Development in the Seychelles Islands

Janson, Elin, Långström, Cathrin January 2013 (has links)
ABSTRACT The cost of doing nothing would be very high on the fragile national ecosystems andultimately on the society of the Seychelles. ’Seychelles National Report 2012 p55 This Minor Field Study, undertaken as a Bachelor’s thesis, aims to research the Seychelleswork with sustainable tourism development and its challenges. The study was conducted onsite for two months in cooperation with the Seychelles Tourism Board. The national strategyfor sustainable tourism development is intended to maintain the uniqueness of Seychelles.Seychelles has for over 30 years been a global leader in protecting biodiversity and naturalenvironment and 51 % of the total land area consists of conservation areas. On the otherhand, Seychelles main source of income is tourism, with 40 % of the inhabitants directly orindirectly depending on tourism. As one of our interviewees put it: “the more tourism, themerrier”. The country will get better infrastructure and more jobs because of it and howcould that spoil the environment? This study looks into hotels perceptions of sustainabledevelopment in the tourism industry, their work with sustainable practices and thoughtsconcerning ecolabelling. Results show dissatisfaction with the government and that betterenvironmental governance is needed. The recent rapid development of new hotels isbecoming a rather problematic situation due to higher competition, infrastructural problemsand lack of labour force. The interest in an eco label is high, although they believe it iscomplicated to implement and is perceived as expensive. On the other hand, hotels are moreor less working in a sustainable way already.Regardless of the sustainable tourism development initiative, our interviewees had afear that Seychelles is becoming a mass tourism destination. They demand that this trend bestopped. We ask therefore, is more really merrier?
