The dilution of avant-garde subcultural boundaries in network societyJimison, David M. 08 June 2015 (has links)
This dissertation identifies the diluting effects that network society has had on the avant-garde subcultures, by first building a framework through which to understand the social structure and spatial production of the historical avant-garde, and then comparing this with contemporary avant-garde movements. The avant-garde is a cultural tradition that originated in modern 18th century Europe and North America, that critically responds to hegemonic power structures and mainstream cultural assumptions. I use the term “avant-garde subcultures” because my research focuses on the entire social group of the avant-garde. Most scholarship on the avant-garde has overlooked the importance that social relations, in particular supportive actors, and collaborative spaces have served in the creativity of the avant-garde. During the past twenty years, as society has shifted into a dependence on networked interactive technologies, the boundaries which protect these avant-garde spaces and social relations were diluted. As a result, avant-garde subcultures have entered a phase of recursively repeating themselves and culturally stagnating.
I begin by reviewing the historical avant-garde and subcultures, building an overarching theory that explains that avant-garde is a type of subculture. Using past scholarship that maps the conceptual lineage from early bohemians to 1970s punk rock, I synthesize a set of traits which all avant-garde subcultures exhibit, and which can be used to build their genealogy. I then extend this genealogy to contemporary art practitioners, to prove that the avant-garde tradition continues to this day.
Next, I develop a philosophical understanding of the importance of space for hegemonic power structures, based largely on the work of Henri Lefebvre. I explain how avant-garde subcultures produce spaces of representation in the cafes, bars and night clubs they inhabit, which challenge hegemony by being different from normal values and aesthetics. I reference first-hand accounts of these spaces of representation, to show how they enable the collaboration and creative thinking that is most often associated with the avant-garde. The avant-garde protect these spaces through a set of cultural boundaries: fashion, slang, esoteric knowledge, accumulation, and physical space.
Manuel Castell's concept of network society depicts how hegemonic power structures have become pervasive, and thus can overcome the boundaries of avant-garde subcultures. As a result, avant-garde subcultures have increasingly become retrogressive and fluid. Some avant-garde practitioners, such as tactical media, have evolved methods for addressing these problems. While these are effective in continuing the avant-garde tradition of introducing difference, there are no adequate methods for producing new spaces of representation. I examine Eyebeam, an arts and technology center, which has since 1997 provided a space for many contemporary practitioners. While unique in its circumstances, Eyebeam has adopted several processes which have enabled it to overcome the diluting effects of network society, thereby providing a potential model for building future spaces of representation.

Previous issue date: 2011-03-17 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This paper aims to contribute to studies about resistance, offering an analysis of the limits and possibilities of the use of Internet by dissident groups as the digital information and
communication networks are becoming central in social life organization, production processes and accumulation of wealth. The tactical media concept, elaborated by Garcia and
Lovink (1997), is understood as an attempt to highlight new forms of political action made possible by the popularization of information and communication technologies (ICTs), in
order to introduce an analysis of informational dynamics and communication in the World Wide Web by tactical media groups in Brazil. The research about Internet use by tactical media groups in Brazil reveals local characteristics and a concentrated use for activism purposes, as a way of sharing information,
mobilization and coordination of activities by individuals or groups with a common goal. Four examples of action are detailed: Movimento dos Sem Satélite (Satelliteless Movement MSST), parody blog Falha de São Paulo, assina: do texto ao contexto , project by Cícero Dias da Silva and the idea of MetaReciclagem
This work adopts the approach of Operaism theories, in which the changes originated by the biopolitical production are not restricted to the economic field, but also transforms

Poetic insurgencies: activist art and collective action (1900-2000)Mesquita, André Luiz 15 September 2008 (has links)
This dissertation presents a reflection about the intersections between artistic practices and contemporary activism, especially in the decades of 1990 and 2000. From different contexts, teh study investigates the concepts and objectives of a collective art, socially engaged, considering their modes of aesthetic experimentation and political expression. Utilizing interviews, manifests, critical texts, newsprints and documents as photographies, videos and movies, the dissertation presnts in the first chapter a historical account about the concatenations between art, political activism and collective production in the twentieth century. In the second chapter, this work analyses a formulation of an \"anti-corporate aesthetics\", based in interventionist tactics created by artists and collectives in USA, Spain, France, Canada, Australia and Brazil. Their projects involve artistic installations with biological experiments, tactical media cartographies, protests against capitalist globalization, performances and culture jamming. The third chapter presents a study about the artistic collectivism in Brazil and some of their strategies of action, as urban interventions, alternative circuits of production and distribution, projects with specific communities and collaborations with social movements. Besides, the next makes a brief reflection about the attitude and impact of these groups in the art system, characterized by institutional support of museums, galleries, international exhibitions, art critics, curators and corporate sponsorship

"Doing it for the lulz"?: online communities of practice and offline tactical mediaVichot, Ray 08 April 2009 (has links)
What happens when an online community moves to a real space? Take the case of Anonymous. For several years now, this, loosely connected, entirely internet based group has been known for online pranks and griefing, often being labeled by the media as "hackers on steroids" or "the Internet Hate Machine". However, recently a significant portion of the group has taken up the cause of protesting what it sees as criminal injustices of the Church of Scientology. This move into the real world sparked various discussions which are relevant for online communities as a whole. What negotiations, compromises, and changes took place in order to move into the real world space? In what ways has the group succeeded (or failed) in maintaining the momentum needed for long term real-world protest and what can other online communities gain from this history?

Tactical network sonification: a listening technique for science and technology studiesEl Hajj, Tracey M 07 January 2021 (has links)
Networks are an integral part of everyday life. Today, public concern with the extent to which they influence people’s routines, and how much they affect cultures and societies, has grown substantially. People are thus now engaging in conversations and movements to evaluate and address the biases and discriminatory behaviours to which networks contribute. The media play an important part in this conversation, often directing the discourse towards fears of technology. Although such concerns are very real, the stories that media circulate typically rely on the “magical” nature of networks and therefore accentuate their figurative power. But, for people to participate meaningfully in the conversation, and for them to approach technologies responsibly, they need access to the complexities and technical intricacies of networks, not just their surfaces or metaphors.
This dissertation argues that, by listening to networks, people can begin to apprehend, and even comprehend, the complex, ostensibly “magical” nature of their communications. One problem is that listening semantically to networks is incredibly difficult, if not impossible. Networks are very noisy, and they do not, for instance, use alphabetic language for internal or external communication. Yet there are other ways to hear and interpret them. I argue that Michel Chion’s techniques of reduced and causal listening are two such ways, and that they afford a “sensible” and timely method for approaching networks. Of course, network communications must first be rendered audible to hear them. For this purpose, I propose “tactical network sonification” (TNS) as a methodology for Science and Technology Studies (STS). As this dissertation’s primary contribution to the field of STS, TNS focuses on making the materiality of networks sensibly accessible to the general public, especially people who are not technology experts. In so doing, TNS builds on the scholarship of not only Chion but also Beth Coleman, Matthew Kirschenbaum, Henri Lefebvre, Shannon Mattern, Shintaro Miyazaki, Pauline Oliveros, Rita Raley, and Jonathan Sterne in particular. This project finds that TNS results in crowded sound clips that represent the complexity of network infrastructure, through the many overlapping rhythms and layers of sound that each clip contains. It explains that sonifications may assist in creating multimodal network stories, making networks sensible and apprehendable. Finally, this dissertation proposes that using TNS can help understand potential discriminatory distribution of network infrastructure across communities. / Graduate / 2021-12-18

Espaços Cíbridos: mobilidade e locatividade na arte e na arquitetura pós-virtuais / Hybrid Spaces: mobility and localization in post-virtual art and architectureSantos, Luciana de Paula 24 May 2016 (has links)
This research talks about the issue and process of convergence between urban space and locative media, which form a third space: the Cybrid space. The Cybrid is a term coined by the architect Peter Anders, to designate a hybrid environment where to develop social practices related to cyberculture. With the spread of Internet 1.0 in the 90\'s, which takes place from the massive sales of personal computers, the aspects of knowledge have addressed the implications of the emergence of a new place: the virtual space. But it is especially among \'digital artists\' of Net.art and architects who investigated the ways of perceiving, producing and aesthetically create this new place. A decade later, the virtual environment has suffered a new twist: the distribution of portable telecommunication devices: smartphones, coupled with tracking devices, demarcation and spatial mapping. The resulting practices of these new media: locative media, associated informational layers to objects, people and assemblages networking and spatially locate this network. To investigate the process of hybridization between the informational sphere and space, drew up a mapping of art and architecture works that specifically address this issue. The selection of these two fields of knowledge for the analysis is justified because they are related areas that are promoting paradigmatic changes in this field and bringing essential contributions to the understanding of social practices involving cybrids spaces. Each project offers, the theoretical, descriptive support, on current forms of telematics convergence in space and tense specific issues that the hybridization process, contributing to the advancement of knowledge about the production process, ownership and sharing of these technologies urban space.

Open Call / Open CallGajdošík, Andreas January 2018 (has links)
In diploma thesis Open Call I focus on unequal position of artists in current art world in which, despite the transparent practices like open calls, still persists the cult of name, the power of networking and personal recommendation. This topic I artistically process in form of practical artistic intervention, which is close to the tactics of 1:1 scale of Arte Útil - specifically by creation of software tool called Nomin. Its purpose is to support weakened or marginalized groups of artists. Nomin uses properties of email protocol SMTP to allow its users-spectators to send fake self-recommending emails - from email addresses of famous curators to the inboxes various galleries or other art institutions. During development of program Nomin and its technical background (software documentation, web page etc.) I followed the paradigm of free, libre, open source software (FLOSS) and also the methodology of agile software development in order to provide in this gesamtsoftwerk the users-spectators with fully functional, user-friendly software and give them possibility to influence further development of Nomin or directly participate on it. Created artwork is thus not a single artefact but rather a set of interconnected objects and practices grounded in the network of social bonds and behaviours which balances on the edge of institutional critique, useful art, participatory art and collective performance.
