"Da literatura fantástica (teorias e contos)" / Weird Literature (theory and tales)

Sa, Marcio Cicero de 20 March 2003 (has links)
The present research intends to carry out a survey of the main theories related to weird literature that were produced during the 19th and 20th centuries by searching its characteristics, differences and concurrences. Therefore, it initiates with a reading of the attempts of definition of that literature through the study of H. P. Lovecraft and Peter Penzoldt. Afterwards, we start with a reading of three more consistent theories on the weird one, which is, the Todorov´s traditional weird, the Sartre´s contemporary weird and the Freud´s “Umheinlich" (weird, strange). From the reading of those theories we illustrated them by using three tales which were also produced during the 19th and 20th centuries by E. A. Poe - “Berenice" and “Island of the fairy" - and by Murilo Rubião - “A cidade". Finally, we synthesized and made some comments on the weird literature.

Guimarães Rosa and José J. Veiga were chosen to be analyzed for their relationship with painting. The literary works are “Na estrada do amanhece”, “Onde andam os didangos”, “O galo impertinente” and “A máquina extraviada” in A estranha máquina extraviada (2002), by José J. Veiga; “A terceira margem do rio”, “As margens da alegria” and "Desenredo", in Primeiras estórias (1988), by Guimarães Rosa. In the painting: O jogo lúgubre (1929) and O homem invisível (1933), by Salvador Dali; Vida com flores (1912), by Juan Gris (1912); Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler (1910) and Guernica (1937), by Pablo Picasso. The approximations between literature and painting are made possible by the disintegrating force of the contemporary arts. With its deviations from the conventional artistic way, the fascination, the asymmetry of works, the simultaneities of subjects, spaces and times in the same field of language are chosen, in the multiformity of the expression of each work of art. The plastic arts of Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris and Salvador Dali express magic and fascination of fetish. With the inductive method, the perception of the forms of contemporary art reveals its functioning, giving its aesthetic pleasure. The general objective is to analyze the compositions of the contemporary arts with their relationships. The specific objectives are to sketch the theoretical presuppositions that attend the study of the compositions of the contemporary arts and show artistic productions in its multiplicity of events and senses explored by the language. Theorists oriented the research as Roland Barthes (1987), Michel Foucault (2000), Walter Benjamim (1973), Rita de Cassia Maia and Silva Costa (2003), Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari (2011), among others. Thus, the ruptures with the rectilinear are revealed, in which each art establishes its floating deformation. From the images, emanate the imaginary of the recipient who feels the delineation of the meanings of the literary and pictorial arts.

For the realization such intent, the dissertation is divided into four chapters. In the first, Tale: a genre that says a lot in a few words, we analyze the theories of the story in order to point out the main characteristics of this genre. We rely here on considerations made by theorists such as Julio Cortazar, Ricardo Piglia and Edgar Allan Poe. In the second chapter, horror aesthetic variations, we analyze the fantastic genre and its relationship with the unusual, gothic, horror, the grotesque and the sublime. For this we use the theories of Marcelo Briseno Marques de Melo, Maurício Cesar Menon, Wolfgang Kayser, Tzvetan Todorov and Lainister de Oliveira Esteves. The third chapter, Amândio Sobral: a seemingly text out of context, in turn, has the purposeof presenting the author and his context and point out some of its predecessors literary influences regarding the use of the horror and the fantastic in literature Brazil, using this aspect, the reflections of Antonio Candido, Alfredo Bosi, Randal Johnsonand Luis Bueno. At last, Suspense, fear and horror: the tales of Amândio Sobral, we present the analysis of the works and the strategies employed by the author to generate the horror effect and fear in his short stories, using, for this, the H.P. In-between worlds : exploring trauma through fantasy

Shields, Amber January 2018 (has links)
While fantasy as a genre is often dismissed as frivolous and inappropriate, it is highly relevant in representing and working through trauma. The fantasy genre presents spectators with images of the unsettled and unresolved, taking them on a journey through a world in which the familiar is rendered unfamiliar. It positions itself as an in-between, while the consequential disturbance of recognized world orders lends this genre to relating stories of trauma themselves characterized by hauntings, disputed memories, and irresolution. Through an examination of films from around the world and their depictions of individual and collective traumas through the fantastic, this thesis outlines how fantasy succeeds in representing and challenging histories of violence, silence, and irresolution. Further, it also examines how the genre itself is transformed in relating stories that are not yet resolved. While analysing the modes in which the fantasy genre mediates and intercedes trauma narratives, this research contributes to a wider recognition of an understudied and underestimated genre, as well as to discourses on how trauma is narrated and negotiated.

Loving's the Strange Thing : individuation in the fairy tales of Carmen Martín Gaite

Storrs, Anne-Marie January 2015 (has links)
The aim of this doctoral thesis is to show how the Jungian process of individuation — the psychological development of a unique individual — is depicted in the fairy tales of the twentieth-century Spanish writer, Carmen Martín Gaite. The three shorter tales — El castillo de las tres murallas, El pastel del diablo and Caperucita en Manhattan — are explored here along with the novel, La reina de las nieves. Individuation, as well as being the means by which an individual person develops, also implies a new way of relating between human beings. Jung described the outcome of individuation as ‘objective cognition’ which, this thesis argues, is equivalent to love and conscious relatedness between persons. Dreams play a crucial role in the individuation process — as they do in the work of Martín Gaite — guiding the dreamer on his/her journey. Dreams facilitate encounters with aspects of the personal and collective unconscious, which appear in symbolic form. The protagonist of the story by Martín Gaite which is closest to a traditional fairy tale (El castillo de las tres murallas) and the novel which takes a traditional tale as its reference point (La reina de las nieves) illustrate the importance of dreams in the development of the protagonists. At the heart of each of the other two tales — El pastel del diablo and Caperucita en Manhattan — is an imagined text which illustrates, in symbolic form, aspects of the individuation process. Connections have been made in Jungian thinking between individuation and the development of Christianity into a third age, the Age of the Holy Spirit, because of the major shift in consciousness (akin to the change which occurred 2000 years ago with the birth of Christ). Alongside the exploration of individuation in the fairy tales, this thesis also considers parallels with the Christian story and indications of its development or renewal.

Duas faces da malandragem: a figura do malandro nos contos \"A volta do marido pródigo\", de Guimarães Rosa, e \"Paulinho perna torta\", de João Antônio / Two sides of trickery: the trickster figure in the tales \"The return of the prodigal husband\" by Guimarães Rosa and \"Paulinho Bowleg\" by João Antônio

Thiago Moraes Fernandes Cruz 26 September 2014 (has links)
This paper discusses the construction of the roguish character in two tales of Brazilian literature: \"The Return of the Prodigal Husband\" (1946) by Guimarães Rosa, and \"Paulinho Bowleg\" (1965) by João Antônio. The focus of the analysis will concern mostly on the representation, respectively, culturalist and historical of the trickster by its protagonists. The construction of the roguish character in these tales corresponds to the structural reduction of this figure in society, either as a cultural type, which, ideologically, is the friendly and cordial kind of Brazilian, or as a historical figure who became the drug dealer\'s marginal and violent figure. Keywords: Tales, Roguish, Trickster, Guimarães Rosa, João Antônio

No. of bitstreams: 1 PatriciaPinheiroMenegon.pdf: 12779438 bytes, checksum: d6e186ff1cb1c61beacce7790f62f381 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-10-26 / The general objective of this research is to investigate - in the context of interculturalism – the reading of African tales from Angola and Mozambique in Portuguese in the final grades of elementary school of basic education, in order to promote the intercultural education requested in the laws 10.639/03 and 11.645/08. Regarding its structure, this research is composed of four chapters. As regards its methodological approach, a documentary survey about the current legislation regulating the inclusion of African culture in the school daily plan of basic education as well as an analysis of the literature on its practices, processes and socio-cultural expressions were carried out. After observing classrooms of both educational institutions and proposing the reading of African tales in Portuguese (specifically: a tale from Angola and two tales from Mozambique), an analysis of data provided by questionnaires and feedback from the subjects involved in the research was held. Data collection was conducted through questionnaires in which we investigated the social profile of the subjects and their habits of reading in and out of school. The data generated by objective questions were treated with simple statistics. As to the subjective questions (regarding the relationships of meaning produced by students): they were analyzed and described from the views set out, seeking to achieve this research main goal. We concluded that new perspectives for research on main nuances that guide the study of the intercultural basic education supported by the practices and projects related to current legislation are open. In particular, those ones related to basic education to ensure intercultural education free of stereotypes.

It enphasizes the tradicional fairy tale The beauty and the beast, that is considered as a starting point and arrival in relation to the mentioned structures and contents of the texts, according to the analogies that can be estabilished amongst them. With focus on the existencialist subject related to the questions of appearance and essence, its possible to arrive to a reflexion about the language of the art which has a dialogue with the culture. The texts are read stablishing a linking between the myths Narciso and Adonis which shows an intersemiotic relashionship with pictures that reveal the myths. The characters of the tales get a new meaning when they are looked at the pictures of Vênus and Adônis by Peter Paul Rubens, and Narciso by Caravaggio. To grasp the deep structures of the texts, verbal or noverbal, and to exam the intertextuality of the mecanisms, it was used theories related to filosophy of the language, to aesthetics concepcions that guide the reading of folktales and the mythical elements.
