In Brazil, there are 20 types of land reform settlements, in addition to seven different financing arrangements offered by the federal government’s land credit program. Rural settlements are established not only through land expropriation but also through the recognition of existing land occupations and projects, the resettlement of families displaced by large public works, such as the construction of hydroelectric plants. They are not established only on agricultural land but also in forests and urban areas. Settlers are not always landless peasants, but also squatters, colonists and traditional communities, such as indigenous peoples, among others. These facts demonstrate that Brazilian agrarian reform cannot be studied without taking into consideration the diversity of rural settlements. As a means of contributing to this debate, the focus of this master’s thesis is a study of the territorialities that have been developed among the settlements that exist in Cantuquiriguaçu territory in the state of Paraná, in southern Brazil. We study examples of three types of settlements present in the area. They are: 1) Colonization Projects (PC - Projeto de Colonização), 2) Federal Settlement Projects (PA - Projeto de Assentamento Federal) and Dam Displacement Resettlement Projects (PRB - Projeto de Reassentamento de Atingidos por Barragens). These different types have distinct origins and objectives. Based on the results of this research, we argue that land reform in Brazil needs to be understood through a wider perspective, taking into account the variety of types that have been implemented

Energy is today a main strategic factor in human life, which within this moment of economic crisis turns even more central. From the energy sources used today – which is debated due its generation of social, environmental or economic problems – but, which is always defended by those who are willing to retake its rate of capital accumulation – which for petrol is one of the main source for it. Petrol is today, without doubt, one of the most important source of energy in the world which is highly disputed. The recent world invasions and massacres against the people sponsored manly by United States of America targets the control over the petrol sources, especially those in the Middle East.
In Brazil the exploitation of this mineral starts with a big struggle “The oil is ours”, with the creation of an important company, Petrobras and of state monopoly. During the nineties, period of neoliberalism, this legal configuration has changed and opened for the open exploitation of private companies. This meant that the companies that exploited the oil were owners of the reserves. With the change to a “neo-developmental” government in 2002 and the discovery of Petrobras of new petrol reserves, called “pre-salt” in 2006, generated the debate on the destination of this important wealth, creating conditions for the approval of a new legal framework for the exploitation of the pre-salt. From 2006 we can see a big move in the industry, especially in Petrobras, which consolidates in Brazil a good condition for the development of this industry. In this study we investigate, today, this powerful oil industry, the major disputes from the point of view of the class struggle, and indicate areas where there is a tendency to deepen disputes in the coming period, understanding the dynamics of these disputes as a constant struggle.

Geology of the guano-guayes rare earth element bearing Skarn property, Pelly Mountains, Yukon TerritoryChronic, Felicie Jane January 1979 (has links)
The Guano-Guayes property, in the Pelly Mountains of the Yukon Territory, covers a rare earth element (REE) bearing contact metamorphic aureole which developed around a syenite stock during Mississippian time (319 ± 10 Ma phlogopite K-Ar date, 333 ± 10 Ma Rb-Sr skarn mineral isochron). Sedimentary rocks consist of several hundred metres of Ordovician dark gray shale which are faulted upward adjacent to 450 m of Silurian interbedded impure calcite and dolomite marbles and quartzites overlain by at least 500 m of Silurain quartzite. Sedimentary rocks are on the steeply, west-dipping limb of a regional anticline (the axis bears 162 degrees and plunges 24 degrees south). The syenite, at the southeast end of a northwest-trending belt of syenite stocks and associated volcanic rocks, consists of 40 to 90 percent orthoclase in laths up to several cm long, and of up to 60 percent mafic minerals now mostly altered to biotite. Rare earth element values of syenite, when normalized to chondritic values, have a crustal pattern with magnitude slightly higher than that of crustal rocks. Dikes, believed to be cogenetic with syenite, intrude sedimentary rocks within and inear the contact metamorphic aureole. These dikes are dark-coloured and originally contained up to 25 percent zircon (now partly altered to secondary minerals). Zircon is enriched in total REE and relatively enriched in light REE compared to syenite, probably due to selective partitioning of REE. REE patterns in skarn and sedimentary rocks suggest that fluids circulated through syenite and carried trace amounts of REE from it into the skarn. There was no significant movement of REE from dikes into skarn or sedimentary rocks.
Contact metamorphic rocks can be divided into three units: quartz-muscovite hornfels, dark green diopsade-calcite-phlogopite-tremdlite-sphene skarn, and light green diopside-calcite-phlogopite skarn. Depth at time of intrusion of syenite, as estimated from regional geologic contraints, was around 1 to 2 km (circa 500 bars). Parageneses and textures observed in thin section in contact metamorphic rocks indicate that prograde metamorphism at this pressure reached a maximum temperature of 450 to 540 degrees C, with heat being transferred from the intrusive dominantly by fluids. The mole fraction of CO₂ in metamorphic fluids, increased By the liberation of CO₂ during prograde metamorphic reactions, was moderate. Large amounts of Fe, Mg, and possibly Si0₂, were added to the skarn. Retrograde metamorphism involved significant addition of water to the system, proven by the appearance of secondary epidote, chlorite, and, later, serpentine. Extensive retrograde metamorphism accompanied by large-scale migration of elements through syenite ended 206 ±15 Ma ago (syenite whole-rock isochron) and the last resetting event took place between 156 ± 5 Ma (K-Ar date on biotite-altered arfvedsonite) and 128 ± 25 Ma (syenite mineral isochron).
Petrology, geochronometry, and rare earth element studies presented here have contributed to an understanding of the genesis of syenite, skarn, and mineralized dikes within the Guano-Guayes area. / Science, Faculty of / Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences, Department of / Unknown

L'espace transmanche : un territoire transfrontalier maritime ? / The cross channel space : a cross border territory ?Blanchard, Delphine 03 July 2017 (has links)
This PHD has for objective to define a new concept: that of The maritime Cross-border Territory (MCBT) who differs from the concept of ground cross-border territory by the presence of the sea which modifies the dialectic opening/closure appropriate to these territories, the concept of "inter-coastal" territory because the border dialectic comes to overlap at the distance established by the sea and the concepts of Mediterranean as far as the maritime cross-border territories define themselves by their closeness on the border while the Mediterranean include distant spaces of more than thousands of kilometers of the border. To reach there the first part of the PHD decomposes into three chapters. The first one is dedicated to a reflection around the territorialisation of the sea because the MCBT is centered so geographically as humanely on the sea. Yet if this sea is similar to a no-man's-land it seems inconceivable to speak about MCBT. The second chapter returns to the definition of this concept and the questions which it lifts. A reflection around the association of the terms "sea and closeness" is led there : does the sea take away or does it move closer to the waterside populations? Finally the third chapter presents the cross-Channel, reserved space because it allows to produce new empirical data while testing the hypotheses. It also reveals the methodological protocol developed for the analysis of the MCBT, inspired by DI MÉO'S FSS and adapted to the specificities of these territories. The second part exposes the results obtained within the framework of the ground while keeping a comparative approach to differentiate well conceptually the MCBT of the concepts quoted previously. The fourth chapter is in connection with the practices of the space: observe Tone of specificities in these practices? Does closeness explains them? In what the motives for these flows contribute to the territorialisation of the space. The fifth chapter analyzes the representations of the space because the PHD positions itself in the field of the social and cultural geography. We question the otherness of the cross-Channel residents: have the French and English residents of this space seen in common a shared space? Finally the last chapter is dedicated to the institutionalization of the space. Indeed, the MCBT having no politico-administrative existence it is necessary that their actors cooperate and share a common vision of the space. So the concepts of cross-border cooperation and maritime cross-border governance were mobilized. A particular study was led around the cross-border twinnings and the relations which they maintain with the territorialisation of spaces.Throughout our work, the study of the interactions between the materiality, the immateriality and the institutionalization of the space was in the center of the reflection. The general questioning of the PHD also integrates the incidence of the maritimity on the constitution of a MCBT. Finally because of our territory of study it is important to think about the concept of insularity

Political Development in Oregon: The Provisional Government 1843-1849Tompkins, James M. 24 November 1976 (has links)
This study brings together in a single volume facts and opinions not previously consolidated on the subject of Oregon's provisional government. Previous writings or citations about the government were in the context of larger or different areas of interest. The main areas of concentration in the thesis include the political events of the government in session and the public's knowledge of these events. Also examined are the direction of government, the electoral process, and the newspaper coverage of the period.
The extant journals of the government are the primary sources for the proceedings of the sessions. Public opinion and awareness is gleaned from the early newspaper, "Oregon Spectator." Also valuable are the writings of the people active in or affecting the government. Writings of historians covering some aspects of the period are used to gain an overview.

During the last decades, the sociology has begun to change the analysis about the rural world and rethink its issues upon the rural society in Latin America. One of the reasons is that the rural space cannot be characterized only by the agricultural activities. The territorial analysis does not leave aside the social dynamics and agricultural production that is developed inside the territory, but doesn’t make them its unique axis. The break down between the rural and the agrarian matter that gives this review, allows the rediscovering of the phenomena that exists in the Latin American rural society, and then think about the current challenges. So, the analysis unit of this thesis is the non-agricultural occupation of families living in municipalities included in areas of low population density. In these municipalities we analyze the data about the dynamics of occupations, the local productive organization, the data of the situation of social development and the forms of occupation of the territory. The study of the dynamics of occupation in the territories of low population density presented, allows the understanding of the relationship between the social development of the territory and the diversification of the occupations as an expression of the dynamics of the productive model developed on it. This view is valid to integrate the demands of the external market, to articulate the interests of different productive actors, creating institutional networks capable of generating spaces for interaction with the state that develops public policy, promotes the material background (infrastructure) and institutional (organizational), all together to produce the conditions for a productive dynamics and diversification of productive occupations.

Fur Trade Daughters of the Oregon Country: Students of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur, 1850Gandy, Shawna Lea 01 January 2004 (has links)
Ethnicity, religion, class, and gender are important elements in determining the cultural texture of society. This study examines these components at an important junction in the history of the Pacific Northwest through the lives of students enrolled in two girls’ schools established by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur (SNDN) in the Willamette Valley in the 1840s. These girls, predominantly métis daughters of fur-trade settlers and their Indian wives, along with their Irish and Anglo-American classmates, represent the socioeconomic and cultural transformation of the region as the mixing that gave rise to the unique intermediary culture referred to as “fur-trade society” succumbed to American political and social domination. The primary interest of this study is the process of acculturation facilitated by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and the effect of this acculturation on the métis students.
By using a sample of students drawn from the 1850 United States Federal Census of the Oregon Territory, documents relating to the fur trade, Catholic Missions, and early settlement, and standard genealogical and biographical sources, this study compares the two SNDN schools through an analysis of their academic and cultural purposes and ethnic lineage, socioeconomic class, and religious affiliation of other students. Furthermore, as a test of the success of their religious training and acculturation, this study examines the socioeconomic and ethnic characteristics of marriage partners and the students’ religious affiliation as adults, and looks for evidence of métis ethic identity.
The resulting analysis uncovers a two-tier system of education that mirrored the bipartite social structure of fur trade: the SNDN tailored the educational offerings at the two schools to serve the different needs of their discrete populations of settlers. Subsequent to their schooling, servant class métis girls most often retained paternal religious and ethnic ties, while officer class daughters show less attachments to their Catholic religious roots and chose more ethnically diverse spouses. Finally, the exogamous martial patterns of both groups discount the presence of strong métis ethic identity.
