This thesis examines the criticisms written by James Russell Lowell about his contemporaries. In addition, the author tries to record the reasons behind Lowell's opinions, when those reasons can be ascertained.

This dissertation analyzes the trending habits of children as mass-media users. The goal of this dissertation is to show how children use massmedia, what does television mean to them and who are their favourite celebrities. The empirical segment is based on analysis of data taken from questionnaires created purposely for quantitative research. These questionnaires were given to students in the 6th grades of elementary schools and 1st grades of 8-year secondary grammar schools, both in Prague in the Czech Republic. At the beginning, there is a general theoretical part - an overview of mass-communication and its influence on the socialisation of children and a series of advantages and disadvantages of the impact of mass-communication on children and also characteristics of the age group of my respondents. The following text is divided in three parts that relate to three parts of the questionnaire. The first part analyzes how much children use media in their leisure time, what types of media are most popular amongst them. The second part focuses on television, what TV programmes are popular amongst children and why, if adolescents have something forbidden from their parents and what they think about watching television. Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Esta dissertação propõe investigar o sintoma anoréxico na estrutura neurótica como um sintoma contemporâneo em consequência da baixa operatividade da função paterna e da incidência avassaladora do Desejo Materno. A pesquisa foi iniciada por um levantamento histórico-bibliográfico do jejum e da recusa alimentar ao longo da história, até o estabelecimento da anorexia como uma psicopatologia. Para dar sustentação ao eixo central desta Dissertação, a pesquisa explora o conceito de pai na Obra de Freud e no ensino de Lacan, investigando a baixa operatividade desta função e seus efeitos na formação do sintoma. O conceito de pulsão é explorado com o objetivo de compreender a anorexia como uma invasão pulsional no corpo decorrente da precária sustentação da armadura simbólica que a lei paterna insere. Deste modo, esta Dissertação expõe duas hipóteses centrais: a anorexia como uma manobra de separação, operação que a função paterna não inscreve devidamente e desta forma um recurso diante da hegemonia materna; e a anorexia como estragos que apontam a invasão da mortífera pulsão no corpo, decorrentes da presença avassaladora do Outro materno e da inconsistência da função paterna / The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the anorexic symptom in the neurotic structure as a contemporary symptom resulting from the low operatibility of the paternal role and the overwhelming incidence of the Maternal Desire. The research was initiated by a historical-bibliographical survey of fasting and food refusing throughout history, until the establishment of anorexia as a psychopathology. Giving support to the control axis of this thesis, the research explores the father concept in the work of Freud and Lacans teaching, investigating the low operability of this function and its effects on symptom formation. The drive concept is explored in order to understand anorexia as an encroachment drive in the body due to the precarious support of the symbolic armor that the paternal law inserts. Thus, this thesis exposes two central hypotheses: anorexia as a separation ploy, an operation that the paternal function does not fulfil properly and, therefore, is not an appeal in the face of maternal hegemony, and anorexia as damages that point the invasion of deadly drive in the body, arising from the overwhelming presence of the Maternal Other and of the inconsistency of the paternal function

Data from great developing population in cities, added with the urban exodus from rural areas, are the causes of swelling, and later, an explosive urban sprawlling caused in cities. In this process, the land appreciation in urban centers and tax incentives and the cheaper labor in neighboring towns, made that big industries change from urban centers, leaving the obsolete large areas. On the other hand, the cities, originally created for the celebration of life, and to celebrate what we have in common, today are draining energy resources, and the most polluting source of the planet. The new urban projects should consider this complex reality, then look for some contemporaries principles, such as sustainable urban development, productive restructuring, the environments of research and technological innovation and biotechnology. To do so, development agiencies have been created to conciliate the public and private interests. We explore the concept of compact city, in the light of contemporary urban projects in wastelands in central areas. To context, we selected some case studies, building an analytical inventory and always relating them to our context and reality. / Cidades pelo mundo inteiro passam por um processo de mutação urbana jamais visto. Os dados do desenvolvimento substancial demográfico nas cidades, somados aos êxodos urbanos oriundos das zonas rurais são as causas do inchaço, e posterior espraiamento urbano explosivo causado nas cidades. Neste processo, a valorização da terra nos centros urbanos e o incentivo fiscal e de mão de obra mais barata nas cidades vizinhas, fez com que as grandes indústrias se deslocassem dos centros urbanos, deixando grandes áreas obsoletas. Por outro lado, as cidades, inicialmente criadas para a celebração da vida, e para celebrar o que temos em comum, hoje são poços drenantes de recursos energéticos, e direta e indiretamente, a maior fonte poluidora do planeta. Desta forma, os novos projetos urbanos devem levar em consideração essa realidade complexa, para então atender certos princípios contemporâneos, como o desenvolvimento urbano sustentável, reestruturação produtiva e os ambientes de pesquisa e inovação tecnológica e biotecnológica. Para tanto, agências de desenvolvimento foram criadas para conciliar os interesses públicos e privados envolvidos. Nesse contexto, utilizamos o conceito da cidade compacta, como base conceitual desta pesquisa à luz dos projetos urbanos contemporâneos em vazios urbanos em áreas centrais. Para contextualizar, buscamos os estudos de caso, construindo um inventário analítico das obras selecionadas, com maiores detalhamentos e sempre os relacionando à nossa realidade e contexto locais.

The consolidation of urbanization, the technological revolution that fostered globalization, the economic restructuration and informalization, modified space and time concepts, bringing populations closer together and provoking political transformations. They made contemporaries cities protagonists of world events and as a consequence of such processes, worthlessness spaces appeared and cities all over the world started to bet on the strategy of acting in this problematic areas through initiatives aimed at promoting intentional transformations to obtain a multidimensional valorization urban, financial, environmental, cultural and social. In short, such urban initiatives intend to make cities more competitive, sustainable, creative, productive and fair. Also in Brazil, countless worthless spaces appeared in waterfronts, central areas, and deactivated industrial/urbanized areas, as well as in sub-used or misused areas lacking infrastructure and public services where it is imperative and urgent to perform urban initiatives. This research proposes as a thesis that urban initiatives, when carried out based on an adequate politicalinstitutional model, transform and give value to worthless spaces in their multiple dimensions, offering better quality of life to their residents and helping to fulfill the social role of the city. We intend to prove this thesis through the analysis of national and international cases and by introducing thoughts, critique and guidelines as a contribution to the improvement of the urban initiatives implementation processes, in particular to those regarding worthless areas of Brazilian cities / As transforma??es mundiais ocorridas no s?culo XX redefiniram os rumos da cidade neste novo s?culo. La tesis que presentamos se centra en la importancia que la ilustración como categoría semiótico-discursiva establece en las colecciones literarias de novela corta, que triunfan en España en los años iniciales del siglo XX. En los cinco primeros capítulos, se plantean aspectos significativos del mundo de la imagen ilustrada: una aproximación al decurso histórico de la ilustración, a su consideración como medio de comunicación de masas, y a su relación con las disciplinas artísticas clásicas como pintura y la literatura. También se realiza un análisis generalizado del ámbito y el mercado en que tiene lugar el auge de las colecciones de novela corta en sus diferentes variantes. El capítulo VI se dedica a un estudio semiótico centrado en las consideradas siete grandes colecciones de novela corta: El Cuento Semanal, Los Contemporáneos, La Novela Corta, El Libro Popular, La Novela Semanal, La Novela de Hoy y La Novela Mundial. / The thesis that we defend is focused on the importance of the illustration, considered as a semiotic-discursive category, within the literary collections of short novel, those who had triumphed in Spain at the beginning of the twentieth century. In the first five chapters, we propose some significant aspects regarding the world of the illustrated image: an approach to the historic course of illustration, to its consideration as one form of mass media, and to its connection with the classic artistic disciplines such as painting and literature. Moreover, we carry out a general analysis of the cultural realm and market in which the different varieties of short novel collections reach their peak. Chapter VI is devoted to a semiotic study that is focused on the seven greatest short novel collections: The Weekly Tale, The Contemporaries, The Short Novel, The Popular Story Book, The Weekly Novel, Today's Novel and The Worldly Novel.
